I selected Raatz to install my fence from several bids. They weren’t the cheapest but the estimator seemed to be very knowledgeable and made some good suggestions. I knew my yard with slopes and rocky areas would not be easy so I went with the “experts”. They started on Monday April 3rd, the next day they did what they could with the rain. No one showed up on Wednesday so I called and was told they started another project and would finish mine on Friday. I let them know I was disappointed that they did not communicate the plan to me and that another project had been started while mine waited. They got the crew back out that afternoon and all was complete except my double gate on the side of the house. The guys who had installed the fence were pretty good at this point. They installed the two standard five-foot gates that had been provided and there was a 16 inch gap under the side of one gate and the gate was that much taller than the panel next to it. I said surely this is not how it is done on a slope. The installer said no, sloped gates should have been ordered and the estimator should have known that. I said then that’s what it needs to be. He said he thought they had all the info they needed but there may be someone by to double check measurements. No one offered to do anything temporary so we could use the fence for our dogs in the meantime. We got wire fencing and cable ties and put it in place ourselves. I assumed the gates were on order. It was a week later when the estimator called to tell me they would order the gates but it would cost me $350 each and it would take two and a half weeks to come in. I don't know why he waited a week to call me. I asked if my yard or the design changed since he wrote the estimate. He said no. I said then why would I have to pay extra for what should have been part of the original bid. He said I would at least have to pay freight and I said nope. He said he would talk to the boss. I said I was expecting it to be finished as soon as possible. He did ask if we needed anything temporary so we could use the fence and I said we had already taken care of it. Literally months went by – two to be exact and no contact. Meanwhile, every time we cut the grass we have to cut the cable ties for our temporary gate and then put everything back in place. Our puppy was much bigger now and we had to add a second layer of wire fencing to keep him in. This wasn’t enough as he could pull it down and jump over. I called Raatz and talked to the receptionist. She said she did not know what was going on but someone would call me that afternoon. No call. No call the next day or the next. We had to go to Lowes and purchase two six-foot fence panels and cable tie them in to the gate area to keep our dog in. This was an additional cost of us of $125. At this point I’m contacting another fence company and had them out to quote finishing the fence because of no communication from Raatz. Now it’s July and I get a call from Dave who says he is calling to arrange a time to install the gate. I said well that’s great but we are going to talk about why it took so long and no communication to the point I had engaged another company to finish their work. He clearly did not want to hear my concerns. He said to me and I quote, “It stinks to be you but I’m just trying to get this scheduled so we can get done and get paid. We are only breaking even now since we had to pay $650 each for these gates. He acted like it was my fault and they were doing some kind of special favor for me instead of doing what the original estimate specified. I explained our extra cost to get panels to keep the dog in. He said they would have come out and put something temporary in place, all I had to do was call. I said oh really, I did call and could not get a call back. I also mentioned there were some post caps missing and he said he would make sure the guys walked the fence and took care of anything missing. The gates got installed. The gates are barely adjusted for the slope, they made a big adjustment in the adjoining panel and we had to put stones underneath to keep the little dog from getting out. They did not provide or put on the missing post caps. I had to call and go get the caps myself and put them on. All in all, it was tough terrain and they did mostly a good job. Some areas I feel like, as fence experts, they should have been able to do better. I should not have had to incur costs of temporary fencing or deal with a project that took over three months (July 10th) to complete, my dog getting out, getting parts to finish myself, getting a quote for the gate when they wouldn’t get back to me. Without a doubt, I would not use them again. Dave had a chance to apologize but instead he choose to say “stinks to be you” and act like I should just be grateful that they were absorbing the cost for the gate they designed in the first place.

The work was done reasonably well for the price quoted. There were three issues. They installed the release on the wrong side of the gate so a dog could open it from the inside. When they received the fencing from the manufacturer, they didn't check the order until the day they were supposed to install the fence. Then they discovered the manufacturer had sent the wrong color so they had to have the manufacturer ship the order again and they rescheduled the installation almost 2 weeks after the original install date. When the installers were done, they left several tools, including power tools by the side of the house. I had to call the office to have them come retrieve their tools.

Raatz installed four board fence with wooden posts set in concrete, with dog restraint wire fence between the boards. I told the crew boss that I'd like them to follow the land contours -- I wasn't as concerned with attempting to keep the total length low as I was with the fence working in harmony with the property. Our property is a meadow on top of a ridgeline, and the crew did a beautiful job of placing the fence so that it winds gracefully along the rolling hay field, seeming to be more of a part of it than an artificial industrial barrier. People driving by have stopped and asked who built the fence. (I usually lie and tell them that I did it. To say that most seemed, um...skeptical would be in the ballpark). Because the entrance to our driveway is nearly twenty feet, Raatz installed a commercial (as opposed to residential) double gate that opens in the middle, as the span was too great for a single gate. The only issue I've had with the gate system was a lightning strike that fried the motherboard, but after a call to the incomparable Jody Schultz at Raatz, the problem was corrected quickly and completely. I have every confidence in Raatz, and unhesitatingly recommend them as the finest company of it's kind I've ever seen.

The "B's" I gave for responsiveness and professionalism have to do with calling the main office. When I printed out, scanned, and emailed the agreement back to the salesman, I got no response from him so I called the office. The woman there said she got it, I gave her my CC# for the down payment, and then after I hung up I realized she didn't ask to schedule a date.So I called back to schedule. Then a week later I got a call that they'll be out the next day when the date she had scheduled me for was still a week away. I'm glad I just happened to have the day off when they did come out. Also, no one called me prior to let me know LG&E would be coming into my yard and since I have dogs, I really like to know when someone is going to be in my yard. The work was all good, though. The two guys who tore down the old fence and put in the posts took a solid 8 hours to do so, but it was a lot of fence! The installation day I was not home for most of it, so I came home to a fence 90% completed. They updated me on what they'd done and how much they had left to go. We were very satisfied with the way the fence looks and the construction seems very sturdy. The very next day I called the office back to see if someone could come back out because I realized that on the main use gate, we really needed the hinges and handles switched to the opposite side and if possible, to make the gate swing into the yard instead of out. They returned two work days later and did everything we asked for on that gate.
Description of Work: Tore down and took away a lot of old fence. Put in about 20 new posts and installed new 6 foot privacy fence on one side of yard and 4 foot shadowboxed fence on the other and two gates. We got a second opinion on price from another Angie's list company and were quoted almost the exact same price.

The quote was delivered on time, and the fence company installed the fence as promised. The first evening they simply left with just the posts in the ground & no fencing between. They also did not provide any feedback of their return, so I had to call the company to learn the installers would be back on Thursday. As I have a child that would be in the home alone, this was important information to have. The fence was installed on 06/16/2015. On 06/20/2015, my finished basement flooded because of the damage done to my drain pipes during the installation of the fence. After I contacted them about the matter, an agent of the company came out without advance notice and informed me that because the clean-up was so expensive, they would not pay for the damages that were caused by their installation. According to two plumbers, the installers had to have felt when they hit the pipe, and if they had told me, I would have had it fixed right away. Instead they did not share this information and I have incurred damage to my home and lost irreplaceable items. I am a single mother and I feel like I was taken advantage of. I will never use this company again and will let anyone who asks know of my experience. I lost valuable property I inherited from my recently deceased father during the flood. These furnishings cannot be replaced, plus I am out several thousand dollars in clean-up. You can check my other reviews - I am not someone who submits negative reviews without cause. Most of my reviews are extremely positive. This one is not - because it should NOT be. I took every appropriate action and I did contact the company prior to this review to try and resolve the matter amicably. They refuse. Can you be sure you know exactly where every pipe that leads out of your house is? In most cases, there is NO way you can know. Therefore, you could be in this same situation!

Response from Raatz Fence Co
Before we install a fence in a customer’s yard, we call BUD to mark the underground public utilities before we dig. They do not mark any private lines and we would not know where they would be either. Our contract that was signed by MS. Zibart before the job was started reads, “Customer hereby assumes full responsibility for the location of the line upon which said material are to be installed, and locate any and all underground cables or pipes and customer agrees to defend, hold harmless and indemnify installer and Raatz Fence Company from and against all claims, liabilities and expenses for trespassing and other damage or loss arising out of the location of said fence material on the line specified by customer. Raatz Fence Company not responsible for irrigation lines or other private utilities.” In case a customer does not read the contract, when we call them before we go to do the job one of the questions we make sure we ask them is if they know where all their underground lines are. IF our guys hit any kind of line that they know about, they are to tell the homeowner so something like this can be prevented. Since we mostly use a dingo to dig holes, I do not think they ever realized that this was hit. We did not feel we were responsible to pay for this, but for good relation we were maybe going to pay the plumbing bill. The bill for the plumber was more than the job we did for her, therefore, this has been turned over to our insurance company to handle. We do strive for customer satisfaction as you can tell by our other reviews.

Raatz Fence did an excellent job replacing the old fence with the new privacy fence. It looks terrific, is very straight and even looking. The workers were courteous and took every step they could to avoid damaging the garden and lawn while still doing the job very quickly. The whole project took 3 days start to finish and they were very punctual and communicated well throughout the estimate and build process. I would recommend them to anyone needing a similar fence job completed.

Everyone was very nice, professional, and punctual. They even cut some brush to clear out part of my yard even though it wasn't necessary for the fence installation. The fence is very solid and there was no unnecessary damage to my yard. Installation was finished on time. My only issue was that I had asked for enough space between my fence and the neighbors' fence for a lawnmower to get through. Unfortunately, the space is too narrow. Will have to eventually install another gate because of this, but I did not contact the company to address it.

I could not have imagined a better job done. The workers were polite, timely, clean, and hardworking. Our fence is exactly what we hoped for at the quoted price. There was not a single screw left on the ground, and the job took 3 days from start to finish. They were extremely careful with our neighbors fence that is attached to ours and they also took care of locating all of the underground lines 2 days before the job began. The asked us all the right questions to ensure the finished product was what we wanted, and I would recommend them to anyone!

Everyone at Raatz Fence Co. was fantastic! Especially, I need to bring attention to the 2 teams of workers who installed the posts the first day and then returned 2 days later to put up the fence; both teams were very accommodating, professional, and good at what they were doing! I had several tedious requests (make sure fence is close enough to the ground so the dogs don't get out but make sure they don't actually touch the ground and cause rot, larger post for a bird feeder, a work-around for drainage pipes, dug up dirt placed along house... the list goes on); requests that would have driven most people crazy, but everyone from Raatz remained professional, friendly and more than willing to meet our needs and requests! Everyone was quick and efficient. The yard looked clean and tidy when they were done. I was especially impressed by an invention the first team developed to dig the wholes and place all the dirt in buckets so the yard was clean; and then they willingly placed the dirt around the house in different locations per my request! My backyard slopes and we were concerned about gaps between the ground and boards, but the 2nd team tediously placed every picket so there are no gaps but the top looks even and nice...very impressive! In addition, Raatz quote was the least expensive and they didn't go over their quoted price! The fence looks absolutely fantastic and they surpassed our expectations; it's 3 weeks later and I still don't have one complaint or after thought that we wished something was done differently about any part of the experience or quality of fencing!!! We now have 2 more additions to the family and these puppies love to try and get out of the fence with no success! Again, fantastic experience with the people and the quality of workmanship; we will definitely recommend and use Raatz fencing company again!!

The estimator was great! He knew his product, walked the backyard with us, took notes on everything. We were very impressed with his knowledge and description of what we were going to get. The 2 man crew set posts on Monday, fast and efficient. It should be noted that the yard was a bit tracked up from the equipment. Then a few days later, after a rain, a 3 man crew came out and started building the fence. The yard suffered for it but we had a fence in place. The crew said they had to redo the gate posts since it didn't have enough concrete holding the posts. That was added and they set the gates, telling us not to use gates for a few days allowing concrete to set up.
