Home Makeover

We had really high hopes for Todd and his team because they were recommended by a realtor but we wound up extremely disappointed with the shoddy quality of their work, poor communication, lack of professionalism, over-billing, and unnecessary delays and mistakes. We hired them to do a relatively simply closet expansion and from the beginning they made mistake after mistake. They were originally going to do the project without getting proper permits and they only relented to doing it the legally correct way after we demanded that their work be permitted and approved. They wound up putting the mini split in the wrong location even though we told them multiple times in writing that it couldn't go in the one part of the closet where we needed space to hang long clothes. They ordered the wrong sized carpet, then they ordered the wrong color carpet and had it installed, and then finally they installed cheap faux hardwood floor from Lowes. They were originally not going to put baseboards up until we told them it needed to be done. Their initial estimate didn't include insulation--how does an experienced contractor forget to factor in the cost of insulation?--so they up-charged us a few thousand dollars in the middle of the project once they realized their mistake. They made the same billing mistake (failing to include a necessary project line item in their estimate and then adding the charge onto the total project cost weeks after they started, thereby surprising us and going above-budget) with the cost of re-painting an area outside the closet, and leveling the floor in the closet. They ripped open a wall in our living room, directly below the closet, and then threw out the decorative trim. They later told us the trim was no longer in production so, to replace the dining room trim, they had to rip out other trim from the kitchen hallway. They initially told us the project would be 4-6 weeks but it wound up taking closer to 10 weeks. If we hadn't checked in with them on a regular basis and asked them for status updates it would've taken them double the time. Their workers left drywall dust all over the closet and area below the closet and tracked it into and throughout the house on a daily basis. We had to hire professional deep cleaners to get the dust out of every nook and cranny. The final product is not terrible--the closet is bigger and nicer than it was originally--but the process of working with Home Makeover was so unpleasant that we wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

We recently hired Todd Perkins of Home Makeover to tear out a closet and build a laundry niche. The communication was not done as promised. The workers did not come when they were supposed to and after extreme frustration, we chose to hire others to complete the project. We respectfully requested a bill for the actual work performed, but were shocked to get a bill for the finished niche amount even though about 50% of the agreed work was not completed. When we questioned the full amount, his answer was he “did not expect us to not let him to complete the project”. He then threatened to put a lien on the property and turn it over to collections if we did not pay the full amount. This was business bullying at it’s best.

My very first impression of the provider was that he was precise and friendly. What stood out the most about the quote was that it was a good price. We got to get everything done because there is naturally things that come along when you're doing construction.
