David installed some privacy fencing for me about a year and a half ago. He did good work, kept the place tidy, and gave me a good price. I am very pleased with the fence and the decorative gate in back.

David and I graduated from high school together. I had not called him for an estimate, but I had called Coffey's Home Improvements. My understanding after calling Coffey's is that they sometimes work together. David showed up to give an estimate, and I never heard from Albert Coffey again. I had thought that Albert and David would show up or Albert would show up to do the actual work. Instead, David showed up. Besides the discussions during the estimate process, I sent David an email with updates to my list, and how I wanted them done. This was after talking to other contractors who gave me other suggestions on how to do the repairs. I told David that I would like his input on some things. However, he was not good at communicating or discussing choices, unless I brought it to his attention in person. Instead, he just did things the way he wanted. At the estimate meeting, he told me that he worked for $400/day, and that he thought it would take a week. So he figured it would be $2000 labor plus $250 for materials. I broke down his pay to be $50/hour for an 8 hour day. On the plus side, David showed up on time all three days that he came. On the minus side, he was at my home 5.5 hours the first day, 4.5 the second day, and 5.5 on the third day. On the first day, he picked up some materials during his lunch break. He told me that he had to go to another job at 3:15. On the second day, I left for an appointment at 1:50, and when I returned home at 2:30, he was gone with no explanation. On the third day, he also had to leave early at 3:00. He wanted to settle up and told me that I owed him $1200, which I told him I was not willing to pay, since he never worked a full day. I asked him how much the materials cost, and he said that he didn't charge for materials. Initially, he'd told me that materials were going to be about $250. He explained that he'd told me that he gets $400/day and added that he charges for travel time to and from my house as well as for picking up materials. I agree that I should pay for him to pick up materials, but all he had to get for the jobs were the floor pegs, a piece of trim, and a 2 x 4 or some type of board for the rotted eaves. None of those materials would take 8.5 hours to pick up, even if he had spread them out over three days. I don't believe anyone should get $400/day for working less than 8 hours. I don't know any other business where that is acceptable. He did about a third of the items satisfactorily, another third he did very poorly, and the rest, he didn't do at all. I ended up paying him midway between what he wanted to be paid, and what I thought he should be paid. Even at that, I felt I had over paid him. I think David is probably very good at new projects, where he can be creative, instead of doing repairs. I don't think being a handyman is his forte.

David Vatter was polite, kept in touch with me, came on time. I would call David again.

David showed up on time for the estimate and job. The work done was quality and the price charged fair. I will definitely be calling on him in the future.
