Allen Electrical has provided quality residential electrical services in Louisville and Southern Indiana for more than 40 years. A locally owned business, we are licensed and insured in both Kentucky and Indiana. Our highly trained, professional staff includes several master electricians to ensure that all installations and repairs are performed to code.
I am extremely dissatisfied with Allen Electric, their upsale practices and over-pricing. I feel that I was overcharge for the work that I requested, strongly persuaded into work that I did not need and narrowly missed being charged an additional $4600 that was totally unnecessary. Overcharge: I was charged $387 (Level 7) to replace a simple $10 terminal and splice 6" of wire on my meter box that required less than 1/2 labor for 1 electrician. This job was not one of their prepriced jobs so the rate was determined on the on the fly. The electrician then told me that I needed a new ground rod installed and the inspector would not pass the job if he didn?t ?SEE? one. This was deceiving since it is known by electricians that the inspector does not physically come out to small jobs like this and therefore would never ?SEE? anything. (I later discovered a permit was never filed anyway). A ground rod already existed on my 10 year old home. When I question as to why it needed to be done now, an additional $49 service call was used as leverage to get me to do the work that day. This job required also required a hole to be cut in my basement drywall that will now need repair. Permit: I was charge a permit fee for this work. According to the Jefferson County website, a permit was never filed on this job even though I paid a permit fee. Therefore the work has never been inspected. Additional quote: After the work was complete, It was discovered that I had an additional break in me service line. Instead of making an attempt to find the break in my service and do the repair, as I suggested several times, I was being pushed to a $4600 option to rerun my entire service. At this point I sent Allen electric on their way and call Corrigan electric. They quoted me less that $2600 for the same work to replace my service line. (I feel this was an attempt by Allen to get money out of a bad situation.) But instead of jumping to the larger job, Corrigan electric came out an took the time for 2 electicians to investigate and find the break in my service. They found the problem, hand dug my line and spliced 2 10' sections supply line. This required much more time, material and labor than the work Allen provived and was $100 cheaper. I will never use Allen Electric again and have suggested the same to everyone I know. I have also reported them to the city for not filing a permit.
Description of Work: A terminal was pulled off and disconnected from my meter. Allen electric replace the terminal and spliced in 6" of main line. Allen also added an additional ground rod and their suggestion even though one already existed. An estimate was also provided to rerun my entire main line from the street at the cost of $4600 once an additional break was detected after the initial work.

Dear Sir, Thank you for your feedback regarding your experience with Allen Electrical. We appreciate you expressing your concern; however, our recollection of the details and events surrounding the project are quite different than yours. Below are details regarding your project from our documentation: 1. Customer called office on 1-13-12 at approximately 9:00 am. 2. Customer stated that, “LG&E disconnected all power to his home due to meter block damage”. 3. An Allen Electrical Technician (Tech) arrived at 10:20 am and assessed the meter problem and damage. 4. The Tech explained the repair cost of the meter and the required new ground rod system. The old existing ground rod was not visible as required by code enforcement. 5. The Tech presented the cost to the customer. The customer approved the project scope and price before any work began. 6. The Customer was also informed before work began that we needed to cut a small hole in the drywall in order to install a ground wire into the electrical panel and customer will be responsible for the drywall repair. 7. The parts required for the necessary repair and grounding were well in access of $10.00. 8. There was never any presentation of an additional $49.00 service charge. All customers are informed of our $49.00 dispatch fee when scheduling an appointment. 9. After meter repairs were completed, we contacted Metro Code Enforcement to restore power in order for the repairs to proceed. The required 5 Day Letter was issued as part of the permitting process. 10. LG&E arrived within several hours to restore power to the customer’s home. 11. LG&E discovered that the customer was not receiving the required 120/240 voltage to his home and indicated that there was an additional problem that needed to be corrected, possibly with underground service. As a result LG&E was unable to reconnect electrical services at that time. 12. Our tech immediately called our underground locating contractor. The contractor arrived, located, tested and marked breaks and depth with red paint. They found several ground faults (breaks) in the old underground wiring. 13. We informed the customer of the results and he asked us to quote a completely new underground service project with conduit, which is a more expensive installation than typical cable. The customer did not want us to splice the conductors so we did not price the splice repairs which is less expensive than installing a new line. 14. The customer said he would consider the work to be performed and would call the next morning. Our tech left at approximately 4 pm (5.5 hours of labor). 15. Customer had another electrician make the repairs after Allen Electric spent the time to diagnose and locate the underground breaks. 16. The customer was never charged the $300.00 for the locating services. 17. The customer’s price quote never changed from the original meter repair/ grounding quote. 18. Since we were not given the opportunity to complete the project we did not complete the permitting process since another contractor performed the repairs. 19. We never heard back from the customer until this review on Angie’s List. In addition to the information listed above, the customer signed an authorization to work order before work began on the project and signed a document once we completed the initial stage of the project stating that he was completely satisfied with the work performed by our company. It is unfortunate that this customer was dissatisfied with the work performed on this project and we are uncertain about the cause of his dissatisfaction based on the facts above. Charles Allen

The estimate was given when the serviceman arrived. The cost was $400.00 for all 4 plugs and no other services included. I was not available when the serviceman gave the estimate. He gave the estimate to my sister. She had no awareness the cost of the parts was approximatly $13.00 apiece for the inhouse recepticles and 24.00 apiece for the outdoor receticles, a total of about $75 for all the parts needed at the local building supply. I stopped him half way through the job, after learning of the cost. The serviceman was friendly, courteous, professional, and understanding. Senior Citizens cannot afford this cost for a simple job like this. I did the final two recepticles myself and saved over 200.00. The technician did tell me there was a guarantee of 1 year on parts and labor but refused to deduct the $49 dollar service charge they advertised, if you had them do work. The magnet they sent out later as a "thank you" clearly states they deduct the service charge if you have them do any work. I will not be calling them for jobs in the future, since I cannot affort this company. In an earlier service to our home, they wanted to charge 693.00 plus a 49.00 dispatch fee to change 7 smoke detectors in the house. Did not agree to this estimate because it was excessive but was willing to try them again...Now I will not call for any other services.
Description of Work: Called to get 2 in-wall electrical recepticals replaced and 2 out-door recepticals replaced. The recepticals were already installed in the wall but went out.

Member, Thank you for sharing your concerns about your experience with Allen Electric. When hiring a professional service company like Allen Electric the cost of installing a part will always be more expensive than the parts associated with completing your project. First and foremost a professional licensed electrician is installing the receptacles and knows how to properly install them according to building code specifications. In addition to the technician’s salary there are many costs associated with sending a technician to perform a job including fuel, insurance, vehicle wear and tear, administrative support (scheduling and other paperwork), overhead and profit margin. The price was given upfront and work only began when the project price and scope was approved. Our prices are competitive with other residential electricians. We have never promoted a special offer discounting the $49 dispatch fee nor is this offer included on our Thank You magnets. However, we did provide you with a $25 discount coupon for the work performed for this project. Sincerely, Charles Allen

I was pleased with them. We called them and they came out and fixed our problem. They were good. They did what they said. They gave a price and lived with it. They even had to send out to get two new ground fault detection sockets since they didn't have them in their truck. They were very nice and very quick. I thought that they were a little on the high side for what they did but I had never called an electrician in to do any work before, so I really had no great feel for what the cost should be. They were quick on responsiveness and the quality of their work was very good. They were here when they said they would be.
Description of Work: I have used Allen Electrical Services for electrical work. They replaced two sockets with ground fault detection in them. We had one burn out and they repaired another that had not been working.

We chose them because of the servicing they did when they put in the air conditioning. We had a short in an outlet for our television, they came right on out and looked at it for us. They even installed surge protectors for us that we previously purchased but didn't know how to install. I was very happy with their pricing, and their timeliness. They go out of their way to make sure their customer service is making a good impression and stands apart from other companies in that category. I would definitely use this company in the future.

We appreciate your feedback on Angie’s List. We do not provide pricing over the phone because we cannot give you an accurate estimate without seeing the work that has to be done to complete a project. We dispatch a technician to estimate a job, discuss the work that needs to be done and review pricing with a customer on each residential project. No work begins on a project until the price and scope has been approved by the customer. This is to protect our customers and Allen Electric! Our goal is to provide all of our customers with excellent electrical work along with great customer service at fair market value. Sincerely, Charles Allen

When it comes to electrical work I trust Allen Electrical & have used them numerous times over that last several years, always with complete satisfaction. I get an estimate up front, they always show up on time, give me a 30 minute heads-up b-4 they get there, and their workers are all business while on the job. I've used weekend warriors in the past in an attempt to save a few bucks & I've learned that lesson the hard way....for electrical, Allen Electric is my only choice.
Description of Work: I have a few rental properties one being 110 yrs old the other 60. Maintenance is an ongoing issue & I've gathered a trusted list of contractors that I go to when in need. Yesterday, I needed outdoor security lights replaced at both properties. 2 fixtures were replaced in Germantown, and another in hikes point, at least 20 minutes apart from each other......all were professionally installed. checked, and we were done in a span of less than 2hrs, including the road trip.

I met them at the house and explained what was needed. They supplied a detailed quote, called to make the appointment for the service, and did they work. They were exactly on time every time.
Description of Work: Allen Electric replaced the incoming service from the utility connection down to a new load center, including a new driven ground. They also had to remove two subpanels and wire back to the new load center. They also replaced about 6 receptacles with new double receptacles, and added a new one in the bath room. All work was very neat and professionally run. They were extremely professional, punctual, and did what they said.

Excellent! However, the electrician ran the wire to the fan off of the attic lights (unaware that the attic lights were wired on a switch which controlled the garage lights). Consequently, when the garage light was off, the fan would not operate. They sent the electrician back the next day and he rechecked all the connections and the switch he had installed, and decided the fan was defective. A new fan was obtained and he came and installed it and still it wouldn't work. Then he realized that the attic lights were on the garage switch, and rewired off of another junction box. He was very apologetic about the mix-up and we are totally satisfied with this company.

The electrician was very professional and with the exception of a small nic in the drywall at one outlet, (which he told me about), was very neat and cleaned up any mess he made. He called ahead and asked if he could come a bit early, which worked well for me. I'm not sure I would have had the work done at that price, but I was having guest that next week end and didn't want breakers tripping, so I went ahead and had it done. The electrician came the morning after I called, ready to do the work that I had requested and they did give me the price, up front. I would probably shop around for a better price next time, but I was very satisfied with the overall experience.
Description of Work: I had two ceiling fans installed and 4 g f i outlets replaced. They also put in 2 additional circuits to solve the tripping breaker of the g f i outlets. In all it took approximately 5 hours.

The electrician pointed out that whoever had installed the outlet had used the push-ins rather than the contact screws and that everything after the outlet was dependent on the outlet working correctly, which is not up to code. This explained why my front porch light sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. He quickly repaired the outlet and brought it up to code. I also had a ceiling fan light with a stuck switch, which he quickly fixed by replacing the switch. He worked very quickly and answered my questions as he was working, which I really appreciated. The amount they charged turned out to be pretty steep per hour, but he knew what he was doing and you pay for the nice marketing, the pretty vans, the little booties they wear to keep your floor clean, and the fact that they show up when they say they will. I was very satisfied.

The project began at 8:00am and was completed by 1:30pm. Allen Electric Employees Chuck and Drew provided the service. We told Chuck what we wanted and Chuck provided the price up front and we accepted and away they went to get started on the project. They wore boot covers to keep the floors clean and they kept their work area as clean as reasonable. Anytime large lights, ceiling fans, drilling holes through brink, switch plates and wire cutting are in play it can get bit messy but no worries they cleaned up enough that our cleaning task was minimal. Chuck and Drew worked as a team to remove the large light but when that task was finished they went to their own division of labor tasks and speeded to the conclusion of this project. The ceiling fans looked and worked great. The Digital timers required programming and that was easy enough. We just needed to clear out any program and set our own. The motion/flood light was a standard model Allen electric carries. When I examined the motion light I noticed that the weather seal was not seated properly. The owner corrected this problem. The owner made a few other adjustments and the rest is history.
Description of Work: Take down chandelier in front office and Install ceiling fan. Take down bad ceiling fan on back porch and install new ceiling fan. Install motion/flood light over back patio area Install three digital timers for front porch, front canister lights, and rear deck lights. Install pull chain for back-up panty light switch.

I called their number after regular hours and the service said they would have them call me the next day because I said it was not an emergency. The next day Allen Electric called and scheduled to come out when it was convienent for my husband to be there. There was a problem in our breaker box that was discovered by the company that fixed our airconditioner. The technician came out and discovered that we had a breaker that was staying open, and several loose connections as well as another breaker that was about to go out. He replaced the breakers tightened everything up and even gave us a quote for moving our box to another location (future plans). A great experence.

Telephone contact was good. Service persons (two men) were on time, clean, uniformed, and polite.
