Allen Electrical has provided quality residential electrical services in Louisville and Southern Indiana for more than 40 years. A locally owned business, we are licensed and insured in both Kentucky and Indiana. Our highly trained, professional staff includes several master electricians to ensure that all installations and repairs are performed to code.
Working with Allen Electrical was so convenient! After a frustrating experience with trying to schedule the work with another electrician, I found Allen on Angie's List and was impressed by the reviews touting their professionalism and prompt service. When I called, they were able to schedule our job for two days later. We had already purchased the fan, but Chris arrived with all of the other tools and materials needed to get the job done that day. The installation was complicated by the age of the house and structure of the bathroom, but Chris quickly figured out how to install the fan with the smallest amount of damage to the walls and ceiling. He cut a small hole in the ceiling and then discovered the fan could not be installed there due to the structure of the joists. (We were having our ceiling repaired anyway due to moisture damage from improper ventilation, so it wasn't a big deal. But we appreciated that he did only the minimum damage necessary.) He then cut a hole in the wall, installed the fan, ran the ventilation tube into our basement, and cut a hole in the side of the house to vent it out. The entire job took four hours. Allen charges a $75 service call fee, which is included in the figure above for cost of service. They then quote a price for the work, rather than charging an hourly rate. Given the challenging and involved nature of this project, I think the price was fair, and it was definitely worth it to get it done quickly, correctly, and without hassle. I highly recommend Allen Electrical Services.

Had a fuse blow repeatedly. Called Allen Electric and an electrician was dispatched in a few hours. It was on a weekend and charge was extra. Should have waited. A shorted wire was located and disconnected leaving the rest of the circuits on that fuse usable again. I asked for a received an estimate for repairing the underground problem but decided to wait on getting it done. The service provided was friendly and competent. At my urging I was given options for upgrading the wiring in my home and a estimate of the cost was provided.
Description of Work: Found short in underground wiring. Disconnected wire.

Drew was great: punctual, friendly, and fast. Besides fixing the outdoor outlet he explained why another repair we'd requested (putting our HVAC on its own breaker) was actually unnecessary.

We actually used Allen twice over a 2 or 3 month period. I called them because we have an old house with active knob and tube wiring that we are trying to phase out - their website said they specialize in updates on old houses, so we called them first. First they came out to install a new circuit for an electric water heater we needed put in. The most awesome wonderful electrician came out - SCOTT AKINS! - and had a look. He took the panel door off and discovered that there had been a fire in the panel and miraculously the damaged breakers were still functioning. He fixed the damage that day and made us safe, and installed the new line for the water heater, but recommended that we consider upgrading the panel - the busbar was a bit damaged from the fire, the whole thing was just old and not up to code, and we had no room to grow. If we did the work within a certain period (can't remember the window now - 30 days? 45 days?), it would be discounted. We ended up deciding to go ahead and do that because we kept flipping breakers with the vacuum. I requested Scott again and thankfully got him! The majority of that work was putting in the new panel and conduit, moving the meter, installing an external shut-off switch for the fire department (God forbid!), and running new circuits to the attic for a later planned remodel down the line. As part of the work, we decided to go ahead and bite the bullet and get the ceiling fans we wanted installed on the second floor to help our A/C unit, because some of the work would be discounted since we were doing so much. Scott discovered that none of the previous light fixtures were in boxes in the attic floor - so he fixed that and installed four new lights/fans. He also put in two exterior plugs for yardwork and my electric bird bath, and some new plugs in the basement. I'm sure there is some other stuff he did as well that I'm forgetting. He snaked the new wiring through the wall so that our plaster damage was minimal, limited only to around the plugs and switches. Cleaned up after himself as well. The previous panel had almost nothing labeled and was a tangled mess of wires. We were proud to take a photo of our new panel for our insurance company! My only complaint about Allen is that they were probably a little pricier than other companies, but honestly having Scott was worth it. I'm a woman and I work from home. Scott made me feel very comfortable and we were having a lot of other work done at the same time with other workmen - I felt like he was actually watching out for us with these other guys when I wasn't in the room! The work was pretty extensive and went on for a couple of weeks or so, but was all flat rate so it didn't mushroom the cost. We kept adding things to our list that we wanted done and had to work around Scott's already scheduled work days. He had several helpers - I only remember I think his name was Clay? - he was a trainer and friendly, too. We absolutely would call Scott and Allen back in a second for any electrical work we need done. He gave us some quotes for projects that we know we will get to at some point when we can, including phasing out the rest of our active knob and tube. Scott and Nicole even wrote up the full list of what we had done on company letterhead so we could send the update to our insurance company. Great stuff!
Description of Work: Installed new and larger panel than existing, ran new conduit to the outside in a different location, installed new plugs (internal and external), installed ceiling boxes and new lights/fans in four rooms, moved electric meter, put in external shut-off switch, put in new wall wiring and circuits on second floor and attic.... what DIDN'T they do??

I am working to buy a foreclosure property and it required several inspections in order for the utilities to be turned on. LG&E gave be bad information but it lead to me calling Allen. I spoke with Nicole on the phone and she understood what I needed to get done. She was extremely knowledgeable and able to answer all my questions. She was also able to take care of all my needs very quickly as I am under a deadline with my contract. The actual inspection went very smoothly and the technician was knowledgeable and friendly. He repaired several small issues on the spot and prepped the house for inspection. After the inspection, Nicole worked to get the paperwork submitted in a very timely manner. She even called me back several times to give me an update on my permit and pending city inspection. She definitely one of the best customer service representatives I have ever worked with. Overall, my experience was outstanding from start to finish and I will be using Allen in the near future when I need the electrical work finished in my new house!

Service quality, professionalism, respectful of my home was all very good. But with the $50 service charge & their hourly rate, for 80 minutes of work it cost me $250.00 = approx $ 187 per hour. Pretty steep for basic electrical work. Oh yea.....they gave me a $1.00 soda can huggie.

Gentlemen diagnosed wiring issues with the switches and also fixed my chandelier connections. Installed new switches, restore power to my living room and fixed up mechanical connection to the shallow ceiling box (hard to do alone). Everything work very well and I am one happy customer recommending Allen Electrical Services. All work has been done within 2 hours the same day I have called.

When asked about an estimate for residential work, the receptionist answered that they did not give estimates but would send a technician out for a 49 dollar fee. An estimate of the work would be given to you after the technician discovered the level of difficulty. They would arrive in fully stocked trucks and be able to complete the job if you elected. However, you would have spent the 49 dollar fee even if you did not use them... This negates any cost savings you may have gotten by using another electrician even if they were cheaper by 49 dollars.

Very fast response when we called them for an estimate to install our 3 kitchen lights we had purchased. They were out the next day. The guy was very nice and professional but estimate was double what we were quoted elsewhere. I appreciate the prompt professional response but couldnt afford their rate quoted. Also had me sign the estimate and at bottom it said "All work was done to my satisfaction" I crossed out "work" and wrote in "estimate" above it. I didn't feel comfortable signing an "estimate" form when "No" work was performed even though it had "0" by total owed. The guy told me that was to let them know he was out and gave us estimate. Maybe they need to change form or get a different one for just estimates. The office person that answers and sets up appointments is very nice and professional. I would probably use them if i was in a hurry and time was of the essence and money was NO Object. I can't comment on anything else.

I'd like to offer an unsolicited testimonial for Allen Electric for their customer service recently. I have used this company for a number of home electrical issues over the years and have come to trust them and be well satisfied. Two years ago I had a contractor remodel my kitchen and he used a different electrician to install new lighting. Recently, one of the under-cabinet LED units stopped working. I know nothing about these things so I called Allen Electric, thinking it was a minor issue (like replacing some special light bulbs). Tony, the assigned electrician, came and said the unit had to be replaced (there are no bulbs to be replaced) and that it was a"driver" that was defective. A new unit would cost nearly $200. He took the unit and discussed it with service manager, James. James looked it up and found that the brand has a 15 year warranty. They could have just sold me a new, expensive unit and I wouldn't have known the difference. Instead, James contacted the lighting company in Indiana where the contractor had purchased the LED lights and tried to get them to honor the warranty. He even offered to take the old unit over there and pick up the replacement despite the fact they hadn't been involved in the original purchase or installation. He also checked with Brechers Lighting in Louisville and found they had the unit in stock. Bottom line: Tony and James went above and beyond and were very helpful and I ended up getting the unit replaced under the warranty and had Allen Electric come back to install the new unit. They dealt with me honestly and provided the kind of customer service that is all too rare with businesses these days. I'd also like to note that the receptionist, Nicole, who took my calls was very friendly, professional and courteous.I appreciated calling and having a human answer and direct my call instead of having to spend half an hour going through a recorded menu. I'm not related to anyone at Allen and didn't post this at their request or for any compensation. I just think honest, trustworthy and competent people who provide excellent customer service should be recognized. My name is Rick Casey in Louisville Kentucky and I highly recommend this company to anyone.

Excellent and they were very polite and professional.
Description of Work: I have a very expensive and fragile Hadley Pottery light fixture that I had Allen Electric hang in my bathroom. I was very nervous because this was not something I could replace. Allen Electric service techs did an excellent job and took very good care hanging the light fixture. They even had to climb into my attic to anchor the fixture. I also had them replace 3 pendant light fixtures in my kitchen. They did a very good job of cleaning up their mess. One of the techs even used my Magic Eraser to clean up after himself! I believe the prices are far. I would not want to mess with doing electrical work so I am happy to pay them, especially when they do an excellent job!

Cost me money upfront in order to get someone out to the home to give me a quote. This ensures that you have to go through them in order to not be out $50 bucks. I thought this was a bit much but they told me it was an industry standard. I don't know if that's true or not. The man who came out was very knowledgable and discussed the problems with my home. He also pointed out some problem areas which were safety issues. I was very satisfied with the person who did the work. My only issue was that it seems a bit costly and did not like the upfront cost just to get a quote for the job.

We have used Allen Electric several times previously (before joining Angie's List) and were always satisfied. We called them for these small, but annoying, issues and because we wanted to get an estimate to enhance our outdoor lighting. The technician, Tony, arrived on time. He was extremely friendly and easy to talk to. He repaired our little electrical issues quickly and easily. He gave us a fair estimate for the outdoor lighting. I had explained that this work would be done later in the summer after we had completed some other outdoor remodeling. There was no pressure applied to proceed with that work sooner. They give returning customers a $25.00 discount. I was satisfied.
Description of Work: Four small electrical issues were remedied--socket would not work, broken outlet, etc. We also received a free estimate for outdoor lighting.

I have used Allen Electric before and was so happy with them that I decided to use them again to install my new ceiling fans. They called 30 minutes ahead of the scheduled time as promised, and arrived within the time frame given. "John" gave me a quote for the installation for the 3 fans and went to work immediately. I was impressed that as he was removing one of the existing light fixtures, a light bulb shattered in his hand and glass dropped in the carpet. Unfortunately, the carpet is white, which made it difficult to find the remains of a white light bulb. He continued to look for shards of glass long after I thought that it had all been cleaned up. At this point, I was more worried that he was going to cut his hand open, but he continued to look until he was satisfied that all the glass had been removed. Also, that he boxed up the unused fan just as it had come in the box. And then carried the box to my car for me. I would defiantely use Allen Electric again, and request John for my technician.
Description of Work: The technician ( John ) arrived and asked what I needed done so that he could give me an accurate quote. I needed 3 ceiling fans assembled and put in. He looked at each space, one of which had an existing fan. He determined that no additional brackets would be necessary and gave me a price quote of about $330. He assembled the first two fans, and installed them, even disposing of the fan that did not work. When he got to the third fan, he determined that the fan might hang too low since I will have a four-poster bed in that room. I appreciated his input. As he got further into the installation, he realized that some parts were missing out of the box. He put the unassembled fan back in the box EXACTLY as it had been when opened and resealed it so that I could return it to the store, and even carried the box to my car for me as it was a bit heavy. He adjusted the price quote since he was unable to install the fan with missing parts. The two fans that were installed work properly and I am very happy with them.
