A learning experience that I will not repeat again.
Description of Work: I remodeled a bathroom and chose Jim from a list of contractors from the Tile Store in Lexington, Ky. Jim subcontracted a friend of his who he told me he had worked with for years, Scott French. Scott did all of the work and Jim never showed up. I redid floors and walls with Travertine tile. I would come home during the day, at various times, and Scott was nowhere to be found. Neither was Jim. I came home one day and found a pill bottle on my front porch that belonged to Scott. I even gave it back to him. It was a presription for Suboxone. The next day, I found all of my jewelry was gone, along with an Iphone and a Canon camera. When I called Jim, he finally showed up and proceeded to tell me he couldn't believe what I was telling him about Scott. Imagine, me the customer, lying about this. I filed a police report. The police found half of my jewelry at a local pawn shop, which I got back. They never found the rest of the items he stole. Jim then showed up at my house again asking for the tools that Scott had used that were in my garage. I even let Jim have the tools back (against my better judgment.) He was arrogant, unprofessional, and a con artist. He never assumed responsibility for what happened at my house. I filed a claim with Jim's insurance company. They wouldn't call me back. After repeated phone calls, and long wait times, they denied my claim. I talked with the management at the Tile Shop in Lexington, Ken. He says they will never use him again. I also went back to the Tile Shop recently to purchase more tile for a kitchen redo. They told me they have let 2 other contractors they recommended go. The Tile Shop holds no responsibility for Jim and Scott but, from my experience, I would not recommend finding contractors through the Tile Shop. Neither would I ever recommend Jim. Oh, I also had to tear out one wall that Scott tiled as it was uneven. He used half of a backer board without the other half on the wall

Not well at all. Jim Lawson, of Straight Line Tile, does excellent work. He is an artist. However, he is extremely difficult to work with, and has issues with anger management. He walked off the job because of a delay with another trade who had to set the granite counter top and backsplash prior to placement of the tile on that wall. I was very uncomfortable with him being in the house, and would not recommend him to anyone.

Jim Lawson was arrogant, rude and unresponsive. We called him to schedule an appointment to see our remodel project which include installing marble and granite tile for several areas, a basement bath, a Jack & Jill bath on the main floor, the master bathroom and a partial kitchen remodel. Jim Lawson first scheduled an appointment with us a couple weeks after we called. Others we called arranged to come by same day, the next day or the day after. But then on another day, not the one Jim scheduled, he decided to show up. We explained it was not the day he scheduled but we would rush home to meet with Jim adding that we would be 15-20 later than he wanted. We both agreed. We got back as explained. Jim spent 15 minutes with us and said he had to go because he was running late for his next appointment. BUT YOU'RE ALREADY HERE AT MY HOUSE RIGHT NOW. Despite that, we rescheduled. He could not come back for over a week. ON that particular day, nothing happened. So we called Jim. We texted Jim. Finally, that evening, Jim called. We reminded him of the missed appointment. He offered no excuse other than he "forgot." We decided that someone who cared so little about our business before we hired them would be a poor choice for responsiveness after we hired them. Jim Lawson was gravely disrespectful.
Description of Work: Jim Lawson did absolutely nothing. He was supposed to provide a bid on our remodel project installing marble and granite tile in several rooms of our home.

Jim was very punctual when seeking the job and touted his perfectionist details. Once getting the job, he never arrived before 9:00 and always left before 5:00. This prevented personal communication during the project and allowed a major error to occur. He was to install flooring to match existing flooring. He delegated the majority of the work to two employees, which he failed to mention would occur when submitting his bid for the job. The initial tile install seemed to go well, except the tile was cut to fit around the trim instead of fitting the tile under the trim. The major problem occurred when white grout was installed instead of light smoke, which is the color in the existing floor he inspected. The grout joints are irregular 1/2and quot; wide because of the chiseled edge and the grout couldn't be removed. No discount was offered and the only possible solution was to stain the grout. However, my existing grout is enhanced and so the light smoke stain doesn't match. In the several weeks it has taken to find a near match to the stain, the grout has cracked through to the thin set. Jim will not accept responsibility for installing the wrong grout or the flawed process that has resulted in cracked grout. Additionally, he used vinegar on the floor the day the grout was installed to remove grout haze. The industry standard states that vinegar is to NEVER be used on natural stone as it will etch the stone. This etching is evident on our tile by a spotty, dull sheen. The acidic vinegar could also have affected the grout cure and be a cause of the cracking. Jim has no insurance to file a claim and recover my investment. Opinions of 2 other tile installers have been obtained and state that the tile will have to be completely redone. Jim refuses to replace the floor at his expense and guarantee his work as advertised.

We first hired Jim to replace the ceramic tile around a tub and shower. When he finished this job we needed another total re-model of a large handicapped accessible bathroom with a walk in shower. The shower was leaking into the adjacent room where the sinks and vanities were located. Jim was excellent to work with throughout the entire process. The price quoted included all materials and labor with the exception of some insulation that had to be replaced when the old tile was removed from the wall. This re-model included removal of the entire floor in the double shower room because the liner had not been installed correctly during the original construction. Jim completely removed and replaced the sub-flooring to ensure that water would drain correctly and would not leak out into the floor in the adjacent room again. The tile in this project included a full floor to ceiling walk in shower and 3/4 of the wall in the adjacent second room. We also replaced the carpet in the vanity section with tile that matched the bathroom. The quality of work was excellent. Jim was always on time and very professional. He communicated with us daily regarding progress. He kept the work site clean since we were using the adjacent bedroom during this project. he finished the project several days earlier than the projected end date. We are extremely pleased with the end result.
Description of Work: Replace tile around a shower / tub combination. Install new towel bars, soap dishes, and corner shelves. Replace wall and floor tile in a large handicapped accessible bathroom with double shower areas - both walk in. 1/2 floor to ceiling tile, 1/2 3/4 wall tile. Reconfigure floor to prevent leaking into adjacent vanity sink area (required removal and replacement of sub flooring in the entire room. Replace carpet in sink / vanity area with tile.
