Stone Age was a great company to work with. Owners were extremely friendly and they oversee almost everything being done on a daily basis. The quote was a little higher than some competitors, but we ultimately chose Stone Age because of the great Angie's List reviews and because they finished some work for our neighbor and we recognized the quality of work being done there--and they are licensed and insured. Overall, we are very happy with the work that was done. I would recommend them to others and will use them again in the future.
Description of Work: Exterior masonry repair on 2 chimneys where deterioration and spalling occurred over time.
In general they did a good job, but it was work done between other big jobs and they showed up sporadically, although in communication. Didn't really understand their pricing scheme but they insisted that the price included anything to make the customer satisfied. One issue was my insistence that rain water in front would likely puddle in front based on my eye test and it, in fact, does puddle. So despite their drilling holes for drainage, there remains puddles after rain....and for a while because it does not drain. But it looks nice otherwise and it makes the place appear better and easier for me to move around. Still waiting for the pavers to be evened out, now a month since job declared done. Have been told that it will be done soon.
Description of Work: Dug out foundation in front and back of house to first lay concrete and then place flagstone atop with mortar in between slabs to provide both access to spigot and new even ground for easier wheelchair navigation. Also asked to even out existing deformed pavers that hinder wheelchair in back yard by tamping foundation under deformed pavers and laying gravel in between.

We started and completed job in 3 days. We are a small company and do the jobs as they are accepted.just because estimates are accepted does not mean we will start job next day. Since client wants to be dishonest in review we will not accept work in the future from him. Our contract has been fullfilled and some. Thank you. Eddie

The folks at Stone Age Masonry were wonderful! We got estimates from several masons, and the other companies said we would have to have our entire brick patio redone. Stone Age Masonry was the only company that said it could be repaired, and they did a beautiful job. We were absolutely thrilled with the quality of their work. The patio looks like new, and the walkway also turned out great! Their workmanship completely exceeded my expectations, and I am not that easy to please. The crew was very professional and they were a joy to work with. They did an excellent job cleaning up after they completed the project. I will definitely use Stone Age Masonry in the future.
Description of Work: They repaired a large section of our brick patio and repaired a brick walkway. Some of the old bricks had to be replaced, and they did an excellent job matching the new bricks. They removed all of the old mortar between the bricks and replaced the mortar. They also leveled the patio; one part of the patio had settled and was much lower than the other part. They fixed this problem, as well.

Eddie and Tina are Stone Age Masonry and are two of the nicest, hardest working people. We had numerous delays in the patio work due to seemingly never-ending rain over the summer, but whenever weather permitted they were there working. They had good suggestions about the project and were intent on making sure I was getting what I wanted done. I plan to hire them for another project in the spring and would (and have) recommend[ed] them to others.

Tina & Eddie coordinated schedules with me & completed the work quickly. Unfortunately, the wrong color mortar was used initially, but they took the initiative to correct the problem by removing all the mortar and then replacing all of it with fresh mortar. Looks better than it has in years! I appreciated their customer service!
Description of Work: I had the old mortar removed from between the bricks on my front steps & replaced with new mortar, as well as rebar added to stabilize the steps fro shifting in the future. A Chippeo brick was also replaced and my aggregate porch sealed.

Perfect from start to finish. Refused payment until work completed to their and my satisfaction.
Description of Work: Switched cement sidewalk porches out with brick.
I was very pleased with Stone Age Masonry. I contacted several masonry firms through Angie's List. Stone age replied promptly and provided a written estimate. Another firm submitted a bid without looking at the site and the third was booked up. Once we settled on the contract, Stone Age began work within a few days. Very thorough and professional job, taking care to reduce the amount of concrete dust. They returned the next day to power-wash and clean up. I was very satisfied overall.

They gave me 2 estimates for work - one for a complete redo and one for a repair (which we went with). I really appreciated their willingness to do this and they were very transparent. We communicated via email which I also liked. The job went great - we have had a lot of rain, so it took awhile for them to get to the job, but that was fine. Once they started, they worked very hard and thoroughly to get the job done in a short amount of time. The walkway and new step looks great.

Work was done in a timely fashion and they did a great job of clean up after the project was completed. We are very pleased with our new patio and would recommend their work to others.

Were friendly and on time with quote, but said work would be under $2000. Then get a quote for over $24000? They should never tell someone a possible quote in the future, just let the written quote do the talking. We had our hopes up for the work and were floored with laughter when we got this one. **UPDATE** Just got a call from Eddie asking me why I gave them the score I did and being very hateful sounding about this review, saying I am ruining his business by telling the truth basically. There was no need for that. He now says that he told me the original price would be $15-18,000. That's just not true. He said $15-1800. Even his wife took a look at him when he said it and asked him if he was right and I even repeated the price back to him 2-3 times. Ok, just admit you misspoke, we are all human, it happens, I'm sure you get lots of figures in your head from many jobs to quote and do. My suggestion is to just make sure in the future you don't lead on a customer by quoting something prematurely. I'm not saying not to use them, I'm sure they do good work, just make sure you repeat something back you hear to ensure you have the right figures. If he had said that big amount at first the conversation would have been done there. I didn't want anything that elaborate, I just wanted a simple project done and I guess they do more upscale projects than just the small request I do. I hope I won't be harassed again with phone calls and such. It was an error, so just move on please. No harm, no foul. Good luck and God Bless.
Description of Work: Asked for a quote to put up a small retaining wall in my back tree line. Appx 100 +/- feet. They said it would probably cost high, around $1500 to $1800 to do. Got quote tonight for $24,135 to do the work! Holy Crap! I didn't want a small home built! I have a quote from another company to do the same work plus some other landscaping work for $3000. I will be going with them. In the future guys, don't tell someone a possible quote then jack it up 2000%! They were punctual in arriving on time for the quote and were friendly folks. Was hoping it was a typo but I guess not.

This is the kind of Mom and Pop business that I like to work with. Tina and Eddie came out the same day that I called to give me an estimate. They were very friendly and professional. We agreed upon a price and within a week the work was completed. They did a fantastic job of matching the brick and the mortar on my 30 year old house. Stone Age Masonry did all that they promise and then some. I'm very pleased with the quality of the their work. I highly recommend them.

My initial inquiry was responded to on the same day, a Sunday! Despite the fact that one of the owners had suffered an injury, all communication was incredibly timely and professional. Two gentleman came out, set up quickly and work a long Saturday to remove 10 layers of bricks and rebuild the chimney. Rain was moving in on Monday so they called to see if they could finish sealing and breaking down the scaffolding on Sunday. Just a few hours later the job was completed with all debris and equipment removed. I am very satisfied with this company and the end result. The pricing was unbelievably more competitive than my other bid. Lots of similar posts like mine 'cemented' ( masonry pun..) my decision. Thanks, Shawn B.
Description of Work: Removed and re-laid 10 rows of bricks on a 70 year old chimney. They also sealed and finished off the cap.
Eddie and Tina were great to work with-and completed all the work within about a week's time. The finished product was gorgeous. Several neighbors stopped to ask about and comment on the retaining wall, in particular. It went from something that detracted from the house to something that made the home stand out in a positive way. Highly recommend Stone Age Masonry.

It was a difficult task. weather would not cooperate. Work was done professionally with skill and they kept jobsite clean.
Description of Work: Redid Pennsylvania Bluestone porch floor.
We hired Stone Age Masonry to do some work on a house we were preparing for sale. A large portion of the stone fireplace fell and we discovered it wasn't built correctly from the time the house was built (1986). They found us a roofer to rebuild the chimney while they worked with a stone manufacturer to have the stone made. While in the house to deliver the stone, Eddie pointed out a hairline crack through the floor, that could be problematic in the future were it to widen. He put in rebar and repaired it. When they started to unbox the stone, they realized that a lot of the stone had air bubbles in it which would cause issues down the line allowing water to get in. Others we've worked with in the past might have covered it up and installed it anyway since we were selling the house anyway and wouldn't have known. I'm just thankful for their integrity because we wouldn't have wanted to pass that headache to someone else. They took care of getting the manufacturer to take the stone back and remake it correctly. The installation was perfect and looks better than ever and should last the new owners a lifetime. We also had them to reroute a downspout and put in a french drain as well as repairs to front porch and back patio. So happy to have found Stone Age Masonry. For all the work they did, they gave me itemized invoices. Our new house also has stone so I foresee working with Eddie and Tina again in the future.

Excellent from the first call to the final work. Very professional and efficient. Good communications and follow-up. Excellent quality of work. Competitive pricing. During the moving of the patio furniture, the finial on top of our patio umbrella was dropped and broken. Really not a big deal, but Stone Age took the time to search the internet and local shops and found an exact replacement. A replacement for a brand that went out of business years ago. Will definitely call them again when I need brick work.

It went very well. The mason took pains to explain the job in full before he and his team started. They were meticulous in grinding out all of the old mortar - a hard, dirty job. Even so, they left the job site in good shape every evening. New grout was applied to our satisfaction. Bad bricks were replaced. Their workers were personable and very competent. The final price was as promised, even though the job entailed more work than initially envisioned.

Eddie called to set up a day to come out and see the work that needed to be done. He texted that he was on his way. He looked at the chimney and went in the attic. He informed me that the chimney needed to be totally replaced and gave a price. He did no testing to determine where the actual water leak was coming from. To this day I have not received the estimate in the mail or email.

Response from Stone Age Masonry
After traveling to Richmond from Lexington, to do an estimate. As Eddie was up on her roof and in her attic, Mrs. [member name removed] informed us that she had no job nor no money to have the work performed. Her exact words were as we were leaving "no hurry do not have that kind of money" the chimney was in such poor shape, to our knowledge there is no testing that could be done to locate a particular leak. We did however explain this to Mrs. [member name removed] and gave her the amount we would charge to replace entire chimney, while there with her. We are a very busy company and spend most of our free time running estimates at no charge to our clients. And Mrs. [member name removed] was given her price for the job, that's how she knew to put the $7000 on her review.

Stone Age responded immediately, during a holiday weekend, to my email request for an estimate--letting me know when they would be able to inspect the potential job and give an estimate. They showed up when promised and promptly emailed a written estimate. Eddy began the job ahead of schedule. He worked several full days to get the entire job completed efficiently and before weather became an issue. Because existing mortar work (done by another company) was crumbling in some areas, Stone Age was hired to remove and replace all mortar on joints on a fairly large, visible brick stoop and steps leading to our front door. Eddie's craftsmanship was excellent. The work is neat and blends in with the bricks and mortar on the facade of our house. Eddy and Tina were easy to communicate with via phone and email throughout the job.

Everything from the estimate to the timely completion of work went extremely well. I received an estimate quickly, work was scheduled almost immediately, workers were prompt, courteous, skilled and thoroughly cleaned up at completion. Work involved sawing out and replacing mortar of the concrete block foundation of a house constructed in 1935. New mortar joints are clean, smooth and uniform throughout. I'm very pleased with the work and the experience. I would utilize Stone Age Masonry again and would highly recommend for such projects.
