Your just read it above. I myself would like the details of why this organization has an F rating at the BBB, but the reviewers on this website actually rate him an A. Makes me wonder if some of these aren't family and friends reviews which might explain this obviously broad discrepancy. Mr. Head alleged to me he was a builder with 20 years experience constructing million dollar homes. My home is nowhere close to a million dollars but neither did I experience the quality and ability to perform a SIMPLE construction that I would ever begin to consider on a million dollar home if I could afford one. Something isn't, as my Jewish grandfather would have said, kosher here.
Description of Work: The service was the replacement of two 7 feet colonial porch posts that support the eave of a small roof over my front door's entryway. This isn't a big porch but a "covered" portico whose concrete slab measures 4 feet by 3ft. Its just a covered entryway. Nothing more. Nothing major. He was to install the same or similar posts in the same size for a quoted price of $500. When his men came out they proceeded to remove one of the posts and then went to the back of their truck to cut the replacement posts they had bought which I had not yet seen. The first thing I noticed was that they were really skinny posts and not the 5" posts (finished 4 1/4") that were being replaced. I did not like this at all. However, the two guys he sent told me that Steve had said to pick up 4" posts and when I mentioned that I had indicated to Steve that I didn't care if the post was identical but that I did want it to be the same size and that it had to be square at the top for the remounting of my security cameras, the two guys then told me that they had gone to two different places and that my posts were no longer being made and that the skinny ones were the only ones available. Against my better judgment and because I really didn't like the posts he brought, because of time issues and the numerous projects I have to get completed this summer, I finally agreed to these posts. After attaching the one at the top to the eave of the roof, it became readily apparent that they had either not measured correctly or cut it correctly and it was too short. When I called their attention to it instead of offering to replace and recut the post knowing that I had already agreed to a post that wasn't the size I wanted but was willing to accept anyway, they proceeded instead to tell me that they could "fix". They were informed they could not "fix" wood that was cut too short. You cannot make it longer. you can only shim it. At which point they just removed it and said I would have to "work it out with Steve". They put the other post back up and could not even put the old post back where it was before and it was not sitting flush with the metal plith upon which it rested at the bottom. WHen I mentioned this they claimed it was where it was before. It was not. While they seemed "nice" enough in terms of attitude, they couldn't have cared less whether the posts were installed correctly or not or even the ones I had requested. And the quality of their work in installing the one post left a whole to be desired. While it's always a benefit to have someone "nice", I need and look for Competent. I can look all around my house and the fence surrounding it and many of the repairs I am now facing has a whole lot to do with this same lack of competence. Boards cut too short and then small pieces cut to "make up" for sloppy and negligent construction which also makes the construction weaker. Nails that don't even hit the mark or placed too close to the edge and the board was split. Floor joists under the support boards of my deck that were missing up to 10 nails each and using hangers that weren't even galvanized for exterior use! I am very familiar with sloppy, incompetent, don't give a d*** contractors so despite any niceness in attitude, it doesn't cut it for me where I was willing to pay a lot more than required FOR COMPETENCE. I did not bother to contact Steve and "work anything out". What's to work out? I've already seen your stuff and it's not up to par for any amount of money and especially $500 where the posts were only $40 each (retail to myself and probably cheaper for the building contractor.) Additionally, I would like to mention that after his two men left, I went on Lowe's website and the exact same 5" posts as mine were in stock for $60 a piece sanded, primed but unpainted. They also carried 5" completely square columns which I have since ordered for $97 a piece. Not that I like paying more money for posts, but you are only suppose to cut a colonial post from the top not the bottom, and the colonial post would not have left enough square post at the top for the mounting of my security cameras. In any even, my exact same colonial posts in the 5" size are in fact still available and in stock. To his credit, Mr. Head did show up on time for the estimate and was in fact a little early. In this respect he is an "A" over most of Kentucky's natives. He admitted upfront that he charged more than others but he was worth it. On this I would strongly disagree. If your men cannot cut or measure accurately you are not worth it but rather a waste of your customer's time along with their money. I did not check with the BBB (my mistake and for me, and extreme oversight as I always do this first). However, I did so afterwards and his rating with the BBB is an "F". So I don't where, or who, is giving all the rave reviews on this website, but apparently there are some that the BBB took seriously enough to rate his service an "F". If you are looking for a building contractor in Kentucky, know two things: one, and a big one, is Kentucky is one of the few states that do not require licensing, and two, educate yourself on quality building construction that follows IBC (International Building Code). The IBC exists for a reason. Licensing in building construction exists for a reason. Some of those reasons when code is not followed can, and have been fatal, and at best, when not followed, can be costly down the road. The worldwide web is a valuable tool for educating yourself and there are many professionals out there who publish this information for those with a need to know. Use it before calling anyone to familiarize yourself with the trade your looking to hire in, and especially in Kentucky, or any state, where the state does not require some bozo to actually be licensed in this trade. In the end, one post was partially installed, removed and replaced with my original post and I did not, and will not, pay any money towards this fiasco. It took me 2 hours to remove my two security cameras and clear the way for the installation in this area, and another two hours to replace, rewire and remount them afterwards. I wouldn't pay one sou for the experience I had and to date, Mr. Head has not bothered to contact me either. I think we both know without contacting one another, this situation is history.
