Counter Culture Plus

Countertops and Backsplashes, Marble and Granite, Kitchen and Bath Remodeling,

About us

Counter Culture Plus is Lexington's most personal surface contractor. We have every award in Central Kentucky, including multiple Super Service Awards here, as well as the highest rating on Google, Houzz, Facebook and seemingly everywhere in our area for consistently and comprehensively delivering a superior experience. In 2018, after over a decade of service to the company, GJ Gerard purchased Counter Culture and his wife Jena, joined the already amazing team, including the legendary Leslie Marcum. Since then, the already impressive name of Counter Culture has slowly and steadily become the brand to revere. We have a very hard system to compete with when excellence is expected. To start, you have to have the ability to do great work. Most of our competition is focused on one thing: VOLUME. And that's not how you perform at your highest level, nor how you thank a customer for their business. We have an inherent dedication to your happiness here that fuels our decisions, our focus, and our commitment to our responsibility to excel for you. So many of the big and little things are obsessed over by Leslie, Cory, and GJ that its very unlikely that you don't walk away feeling entirely cared for and special, because you are. This is all not to say that we are perfect, because that's not true. But perfect is all we ever shoot for. That is absolutely true. We look forward to the opportunity to show you what a decade of doing right feels like. We are extremely helpful on many levels, and have a list of experts in every trade to call on for any of your needs to be met. Be well!

Description of Work: I had old countertops and cabinets taken out of the kitchen and replaced with new ones. The old ones were carefully removed as we intend to use them in the garage and basement. The new cabinets had the rope pattern inlaid in the doors and along the shelf's edge, and were glazed which really accentuated the pattern. Some cabinet doors where glass inserts were installed were lighted, which gives the kitchen a nice ambience. Lighting also was installed above the cabinets which were staggered and underneath the top cabinets. LEDs were used and most likely will never need to be replaced. All lower cabinets have pull out shelves which really helps find things that tend to be hidden on regular shelves. Soft closers were installed on the most used drawers, a large spice cabinet was included, plus some smaller add-ons. | |The counter top was granite and I was personally able to select it at a granite facility that Irv has dealt with over many years. This piece is much higher quality than what I saw at Lowes and Home Depot. It glistens and has a depth to it. It was finished with the ogee edge which really set it off. There is a seal on it and it really shines which makes taking a picture of it difficult. There was a lot of countertop, but only 1 seam was necessary which is very hidden. GJ was in charge of measuring and seeing that the install went well. He was very detailed and the when the granite arrived, it went in exactly as he had designed it. | |I recently went to the Home and Garden Show and paid particular attention to the cabinetry and countertops that I saw there. This is where I really saw the difference in the workmanship--another company displayed their rope pattern and had it inlaid and glazed. The corners were just mitered and installed without regard to the actual pattern in the rope. Their rope pattern was smaller and less distinct-- even with the glazing, it did not stand out as my does. | |This was a fairly big job and when the cabinet makers got a little behind due to weather and a supervisor who got ill, it threw everyone behind schedule. In the final analysis, I am so pleased with the finished product that I just can't be too upset with the delays. Six month from now I will have forgotten just how many more days it took as I will be enjoying my new kitchen. I would recommend Irv's expertise--he knows what looks good in the end, and can envision how it will all come together. GJ too is to be commended for his attention to detail and precision.

Response from Counter Culture Plus
Hello there. Been about ten years since you called me very unprofessional and stated I don't know what I am doing! Just wanted to give you an update: for years now, Counter Culture is the highest rated contractor in our field in all of Central Kentucky. Passion, focus, thoughtfulness, and our tradition of excellence have taken us to the top and it feels awesome! You couldn't be more wrong to say we don't know what we're doing, but with your confidence, I WILL take a stab at being very unprofessional... "How profound, the intuition of your parents to named you R I C H A R D, recognizing at such an early age that you would be a real dick." Have a nice life, mine is AWESOME!!!!

We initially dealt with the owner, Irv. T. He scheduled an estimate for one afternoon around 5PM. I waited and waited and around 8 PM i finally called to see what had happened to him. He told me he forgot due to some brain condition and was able to come out. He was nice enough. Called me back with an estimate for our granite countertops. We had received several estimates, all of which were a good amount lower than Irv's. When I informed him we would not be using him, because his estimate was over 1K more than the others we received, he became angry and told me that we would be crawling back to him when we received poor service from other granite dealers in town. I told him his product was too similar to be 1K more than the other estimates but he insisted the bigger price was due to "intangibles" his company could provide that no one else could. He was very rude, defensive, and I would rather give my money away than pay him to do anything for me. Needless to say, we did get our granite counter tops and have been happy with them for approx. 2 years. I would never do business with Counter Culture +.

We picked the counter tops and sink and settled on a date and a time . Everything prior to the day of installation was great, very professional and on tract. The day of the install they were several hours late which resulted in the crew being at the house well past 9 PM and the job not being completed. We were told someone needed to stop by and finish the caulking. When I returned from out of town the first thing I noticed was the finished edge was not what we had ordered or paid extra for. We specifically asked and paid for an Ogee finish and got a standard rounded edge. When I called the store manager and informed her of this she proceed to tell me that is what I ordered. I was lucky I had the contract in front of me and pointed out that the language was very specific and so was the extra charge for the finish. She then did apologize but offered nothing else. I told her how disappointed I was and again nothing in the way of choices or fixes. I told her I at least wanted the extra money back I paid and she agreed. The bottom line is I left the counter tops in place because this was an upgrade that we knew would have to be done for when we sell the house in the future. If this had been where we knew we were going to stay long term, I would have had them removed to be honest. We were told our check for the difference would be mailed that day but it took several phone calls and about a month later we received it. Everyday I look at the counter tops and am reminded of this experience so I felt I would join Angie's list and give others a heads up on what should be a positive change.

I joined Angie's List spefically to find a contractor to help us remodel our kitchen. Counter Culture had one of the highest ratings on the site so I went to them without checking any other locations (therefore I am not a good judge of prices). I was very impressed with GJ's keen eye for color, materials and his willingness to try and keep costs down for us. He worked very hard trying to get the job done to our specifications. We did have a few snafus with communications, but he always made up for it by coming when it was convenient for us..weekends, evenings etc. We had planned on keeping our original backsplash, but GJ recommended we might want to rethink this and the original color for our cork flooring-he brought us samples which we agreed were much better. This changed the plans and added to our timeline for completion which was no fault of Counter Culture-they installed the counters right on time--however they did forget to install the counter brackets--but again GJ ensured this was corrected with minimal cost to us. He helped us by recommending a wonderful tile guy (One Pro) to put up our backsplash and cork floor--we contracted with him individually to cut costs. We did expereince a bit of a delay due to his busy schedule but cannot say enough good about him as he and GJ did all they could to expedite the process (even working on Saturday and Sundays)! GJ also was helpful in recommending a wonderful, insightful interior decorator (Deborah Drury) who gave us a discount because of him and her advice for colors and decorating was perfect! Overall the whole job took longer than we had anticipated (a month and a half) but because we made changes this had to be expected to some degree. There were definitley issues with communication but GJ always made an extra effort to try to correct for this. I would highly recommend him if you are not sure what you might want--he has a real knack for matching colors, styles, materials! Our kitchen turned out absolutely beautiful! Check out the before and after pics! All in all, it was all worth it--- to have my husband (who was not overly enthused about the idea of remodeling) walk into the kitchen when it was finished and hear him exclaim a loud... WOW! Job well done Counter Culture!!!

I looked for the perfect white honed marble for months and was working with Katie. After months I found exactly what I wanted at a competitor in Nicholasville. I could have had them do the work but in trying to do the right thing I paid an additional $400 to have the piece purchased by CC. As I had been working with Katie I felt it was the decent thing to do. I paid $1700 down on 11/1/2012 and the marble was brought in to hold until we were ready for the install. I went to see the stone and was told by Katie that several people had admired it. I told her to be sure and let no one take my stone. She laughed and said "oh no - it will be here". On the day install was to be done, I received a call from Katie telling me that my stone had accidently been sold. They offered to look for something else - I want nothing else to do with them.. I did speak with the owner and was told that Katie would probably lose her job for not tagging it. Stones are always tagged when sold and considering this was a special piece brought in and paid extra for, I cannot even fathom how this could have happened. When I called about a week later to see if they even had enough left for an island Katie answered so obviously did not lose her job. After much thought, no one will ever convince me this was an accident! Finding this particular marble was difficult and I am sure as Katie said months ago, there was a lot of interest. I believe someone made a nice offer on it and they left Katie to do the dirty work of telling me. If not, then Katie is irresponsible and should lose her job. In addition the company made no concerted efforts to try and make it right, not an additional discount or offer to do something. They only offered to try and find me something else, adding that getting nice pieces out of Italy had been very difficult recently. YES - that's why it took so long for me to find it. I checked Angies List and saw the good reviews so their work may be quality but I never got the chance to know. I do know either their ethics are very questionable or that Katie is completely unreliable. The bottom line is that GJ should be held accountable in either case. This is totally inexcusable.

Response from Counter Culture Plus
I’ve read the customer's letter and I agree we have never had such an unfortunate breakdown in customer service; I want, however, to respond to four points, not as an excuse or defense but for the sake of accuracy. As I’m the president of Counter Culture Plus, all the responsibility for our work ultimately falls on my shoulders and I, too, have a hard time fathoming how our internal systems could have gone so wrong, but GJ was not involved or at fault in this job. Had our sales person simply have tagged the slab that was purchased for the customer upon its arrival in early November, none of this would have happened. She was hired because of the level of accountability she had in her previous position with another company, and should have shepherded this job as she has so many other jobs to the end with no missteps. As it was, the slab was accidentally used in several jobs, but certainly not for “a nice offer”. We value our integrity far more than that, which is inherent in all of our other reviews. When I spoke to the customer while giving him the deposit check for this job, I told him that we had received a slab prettier than the one that was purchased by the customer, and I would like to show it to him so that she might come to our showroom and consider using it instead, but he demurred. He said that she would have to make that decision. She did not respond to the voice message I left on her cell to see if she wanted to see the new slab and possibly send it to a new fabricator if she liked it so the reference to “no concerted efforts to try to make it right” is puzzling. GJ told her on a phone call that this incident would certainly cost our salesperson her job; I don’t take discharging an employee lightly and this was not an empty statement, but it had to happen on a time line which we determined, not that of an angry client. We miss Katie, and liked her, but she is, in fact, no longer with the company. We are already interviewing candidates who have heard through referrals that we have an opening which indicates to me how many clients and potential employees value our company’s standards for excellence. We hope that the Mrs. will find a company that will complete her remodel, and that she and the Mr. will find happiness in their home. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank our past clients for their overwhelming positive feedback and the number of “A” grades that made us the 2012 Angie’s List Super Service Award Winner. Present and future clients can look forward with confidence to a company that is redoubling our passion to insure Counter Culture Plus’ high quality of work . They were fine and they were good people. I didn't have any bad experiences at all. There are two parts to the company: the countertop in Lexington and the cabinets that are made in Corbin. Both parts work well. They did a good job and I was pleased. Everything was good. I didn't compare their prices. They did a very good job on how they handled the service. I would use them again. I shopped a little bit and they were very pleasant to work with.

They helped us select the stone, sink, and faucet, with no pressure to go for the more costly. Did an excellent job of installation, When there was a small screw-up with the faucet, they immediately assumed full responsibility and made the correction, at their own expense. Very easy to work with and friendly, and went out of their ways to give us exactly what we needed and wanted. Highest ratings: A++

Aside from his busy schedule due to Thanksgiving, I had my new cooktop for our Thanksgiving. I will use GJ again for some other quartz installation jobs we would like to have done. Only not during the week before Thanksgiving.
Description of Work: Contacted GJ to do an urgent job: reducing the existing opening in my quartz countertop so I could install my new cooktop before Thanksgiving. GJ said the job could be done and done well although he was booked and warned that the job might be done on a weekend. After a few delays due to his busy schedule GJ came late Monday night and did complete the 3 hour job after a full day. I was so appreciative that he came through.

Overall experience with Irv and Counter Culture Plus was great. I'd recommend them anyone who needs any type of counter tops, tile or flooring. I know they also install all of their products and would have used their contractors or recommended contractors but unfortunately, we live 60+ miles from their location so travel costs would have been too expensive. We could have went with a less costly alternative but as the saying goes; you get what you pay for. In the case of Counter Culture Plus, you can rest easy that you WILL get what you pay for and be happy with their quality and professionalism.
Description of Work: We've been remodelling our Master Bathroom and Irv at Counter Culture Plus fabricated our vanity top and bench seat. His team not only fabricated, delivered and installed the countertops but Irv also helped us decide on material, color, grout, etc. All the folks at Counter Culture were always very helpful and respectful. Counter Culture Plus will always be our first stop for tile or stone that we may need in the future.

Based on other reviews, Counter Culture Plus was the only granite countertop company we contacted. We thought they might be more expensive, and perhaps they are, but we wanted to have quality results. During our first visit to the showroom, we were given very friendly and helpful advice on quartz vs granite, and color selection, and were given a rough estimate of costs based on measurements we provided. We initially decided on quartz, and were loaned a variety of samples to bring home. When I returned the samples, I also scheduled an appointment to have our kitchen measured, for no cost or obligation. G J Gerard, Sales Manager, was running a little late for the appointment, but gave us a call to let us know. After seeing our cabinets, floors, appliances, and paint color, G J recommended a light granite rather than our initial choice of a dark quartz. I went back to the showroom, and picked up additional samples of quartz and granite. We agreed that G J's recommendation of a light granite was the best choice, particularly after he said they would seal it so that we would not have some of the maintenance issues with granite we wanted to avoid. We then met with G J at the showroom to finalize the contract. We also purchased a new sink through G J, and he gave us advice on the type of faucet to purchase. We got a 5% senior discount as well as a 5% Angie's List coupon discount on the entire project. Removal of our old countertops was scheduled for 11 days later, with installation of the new granite for 2 days after that. There was a little mix-up with the appointment time for removal, with G J having changed it from mid-morning to late afternoon without contacting us, for which he apologized profusely. We chose a very busy time of year for this project, and they really do make an effort to be responsive to a lot of customers, so we understood having some scheduling glitches. Plus we genuinely liked G J, and found him a joy to work with! The crew that removes, cuts, and installs was very professional and detailed, and was very willing to make any requested adjustments during the installation. We were so pleased with them and their work. G J arranged for the plumber to arrive as the crew was finishing. If Counter Culture Plus is more expensive, it is well worth the benefits of working with an entire staff of friendly, helpful, and professional people, and of getting such good results. We could not be more pleased!

Everyone at Counter Culture Plus was very helpful and friendly. I mostly worked with G.J., and he was great about answering questions and making suggestions. His workmen were very professional and did a great job installing the countertops. G.J. arranged for a plumber to come the same day that the countertops were installed, so that he could re-connect the faucet, dishwasher, etc. I had looked at Lowe's and Home Depot, but the attention I received from Counter Culture Plus made the choice to work with G.J. an easy one. I will recommend Counter Culture to my friends.

I originally was looking for a white granite for the two vanity countertops in our newly renovated Master Bath. But, I couldn't find what I wanted at the price I was comfortable with. Then, we went to Counter Culture Plus and met with GJ. He showed me the Okite Blanco Carrera, and it was exactly what I'd been looking for. It's a quartz which actually requires less upkeep than granite, perfect for a bathroom. GJ and the staff in the showroom were all warm, welcoming, and extremely professional people. GJ came out to measure on a Thursday, and surprised me and my contractor when he called on the following Monday saying they'd done the cutting over the weekend and could install. A very happy surprise I must say. On installation day, GJ actually was here with his assistant to bring in the counters and help with the installation. Both men were extremely professional and personable, even complimenting other work we'd done in the house that his company didn't handle. I found that so refreshing. As you can tell, I give this company an A+, and I'm so happy that our designer friend suggested using them. And, before I forget to mention it, the countertops are BEAUTIFUL!!

Great. Very easy to work with
Description of Work: I Contacted over 20 companies to have a preexisting granite countertop recut to fit a new cooktop. I could not find anyone that was willing to do the work. When I called counter culture and they were willing To do the job I was thrilled but a little skeptical as I had been trying to get someone for over 9 months. I stepped out with a leap of fath and ordered a new cooktop that could not be returned on the assurance that THEY WOULD do the job. They did exactly what they said they would do, did a great job cleaning up as they went and were very pleasant to work with. My new cooktop looks great and I highly recommend them,,,,,

GJ Gerard of Counter Culture Plus came to our home (on time) and measured everything. While here, he offered ideas for ways to make my kitchen flow and bring attention to positive things. I loved his idea to make the bar top a from different piece of granite (and a softer edge cut) to bring out color in the main piece and to give my kitchen the updated, but traditional look I was wanting. I met with him at Counter Culture and he helped me pick a granite that worked with my cabinets, tile, etc. He did not try to oversell me and showed me pieces in my price range. He took his time with me and answered numerous questions offering bits of advice without being pushy. It was great to get to see the actual piece that would be installed right there at the warehouse, which is unlike some other places from which I got quotes. My granite was installed and the mess cleaned up in a day. There were no hidden fees such as removal and disposal of old counter tops. Later, when we finished our basement, he worked very well with the contractor making sure everything was ready and installed to coincide with them, keeping them on schedule. GJ has become a friend to my husband and me. He not only knows his business and enjoys it (which shows), but he is a wonderful example to others. On a personal note, he is a "big brother" to a young man and makes certain he has time to be a mentor. On the business side, he has been professional, knowledgeable, reliable and honest. Easy to work with. Counter Culture Plus was a great find for us.
Description of Work: We had Formica counter tops and a bar top replaced with granite. We later purchased a granite counter top, shower bench top & shower threshold and a granite fireplace hearth from Counter Culture Plus.

We initially visited CounterCulture to get some ideas about types/colors of granite available from them. They were very gracious and took alot of time to explain the options available and gave us a rough estimate and even encouraged us to look around at other dealers & installers before making a decision. We did shop around for several months before returning to CounterCulture and ordered a specific color granite that was not in stock. They came to the house and took exact measurements, ordered the specific granite color slab we wanted, drew up the contract, including a great price, and was able to get the slab delivered in a few days, get it fabricated & installed within a few days after. We also purchased a new undercounter sink from them which required some minor plumbing work - they even arranged for the plumber to show up as soon as they completed the countertop installation. He showed up right on schedule and did a great job also.
Description of Work: Measured, ordered, fabricated & installed granite countertops in kitchen.

You are really too kind, I don’t care what anybody says about you, haha. Not only are these folks very nice, but also very patient and understanding. The only weakness to my business is that we don’t have 12 illegals in the back of our shop that pump out 40 mediocre kitchens a week, we have 4 experts that can do 5 kitchens a week that are incredible, but when we get behind, it’s hard to catch up without making it up after hours. There were a couple of times I was late getting there, but they will tell you I was worth waiting a couple extra hours for. This is just one of those things you can’t rush. I am very glad to have met you and helped you. It was worth it to see a smile on your face. Thanks.

Thanks very much for your business, I’ve seen a bunch of kitchens, but the Okite Quartz was the perfect color in there and I will remember your kitchen, especially nice touch with the custom window sill with the same material. Need to get a picture of that on here!

When you're spending this much money you want the job done right. My wife and I spent weeks looking for our countertops when we stumbled on a diamond in the rough. We were impressed with the time that was spent with us picking out our granite, the sink and faucet, and we love the pulls for our cabinets made with the same granite we used for our countertops. Although we had a hitch or two along the way everything was quickly resolved by GJ. He knows how to run a business. And the craftsmanship, quality and attention to detail by Sam and Hugo was first rate. It's been almost 3 months and my wife still occasionally says "I love my kitchen" when she walks into it.
Description of Work: Installed granite countertops, Blanco granite sink, stainless steel faucet and soap dispenser, garbage disposal, and new knobs and pulls for cabinets.
