Hired Phillip in July after a fencing nightmare with another handyman. He was nice and seemed to know how to repair the mess the other guy had made . Originally he quoted us $1900 to fix the one side of fencing that needed repair/installation. Not even a minute late he texted back it would cost $2900 but that quote included breaking up and removing a conctete slab in the middle of the yard.. We declined the concrete removal at fist and he countered at $2800.We finally landed on $2720.79 for just the fence rebuild . Expect that. Multiple quotes that he thinks are fluid and that he can change after an agreed upon price. But we were in a pretty bad place and he stressed his "no job is finished until the customer is happy "motto so we agreed. He did the work fairly well. The other guy had left most of the wood which he re used to some extent and I know it was a more complex job than usual due the many mistakes. But there were problems right away. He left the rusted screws jutting out @ 65% of the boards. the "custom" gate he built.?Only had a latch very high up on the OUTSIDE, effectively trapping us in the backyard and not latching well to the point where our two 35 lb dogs got out fior a terifying hours search. we contacted him and that time he responded fairly quickly, removing some but not all of the screws and attaching an interior latch. Which he forced into the existing wood and which splintered the wood immediately. But it was up and intact and at that point, it seemed ok-ish that several screws still jutted out, several boards were detached at the bottom and the gate latch clearly wasnt going to last. So we hired him to remove the concrete slab in the middle of the yard. Fisrst quote: $400-450 with no removal. Second quote :$550 with no removal. So we offered $700+removal and he accepted. He didn't accept this quote sight unseen. He had inspected the area during the original fence estimate and the fence install. So it was up to him and he agreed readily. His inexperience *(he's only been in business since May 2023) really shows in his inability to give an accurate quote, stick with it and assess the tools/resources he will need to do it. He ran into problems immediately as there was mesh and rebar beneath the concrete. he had a jackhammer but needed a saw. Then he had a saw but needed a jackhammer. he doesnt own either which is odd for a fencer who deals with concrete. His family (including young children) showed up as labor and as a homeowner, I really dont want children running around what quickly became a dangerous demo site. My wife sat outside the whole time because she was scared to see the kids playing with prybars and trying to help. They are a sweet family but thats a liability claim waiting to happen. And a professional should know that. He finished for the day on August 6 only after we agreed to pay an additional $200 to him to finish the job. So now $900 total and the work was a jagged mess of bad cuts, rebar poking out and rocks/concrete of all sizes (paid to remove) everywhere. Then he ghosted us for several weeks. Set up seven seperate dates to show up and nothing. Not a call. Nothing. For a month. Basically begged him to finish the job that he literally took the check and cashed within an hour of paying him. My wife repeatedly told him it was unfinished and dangerous and he claimed he talked to me and I ok ed it. Then I talked to him (the few times he answered at all) and he claimed SHE ok ed it ?! Finally my wife tripped off the edge and punctured her leg on rusted rebar and required a tetanus shot. ONLY by threat of legal action/insurance liability did he finally show up, Sept 1. More than a MONTH later he took out rebar, the rusted screws and the gate repair(he just removed the latch?)Get ALL quotes/dates in writing+INSPECT the work bf paying. His work is ok at best but his professionaism is sub par. It should never have become this long nightmare
