My 95 year old mother-in-law had two toilets with minor tank to bowl leaks. This Blue Dot company came out to repair them when she called them because her sons weren’t there at the time to fix it. They charged her $500 to tighten up the screws on her toilet tanks and told her it was an emergency repair, which it wasn’t. It was a standard callout to fix a minor leak during normal business hours. These people are thieves taking advantage of a 95 year old great grandmother.

We are new to the area and saw that the previous owner of our home had used Blue Dot for years. Positive reviews of Blue Dot here on Angie's List, combined with good references from people we know, helped us decide to give them a call. Our house is about 40 years old, with some of the challenges any older home can bring. In this case, drains weren't stopped up, but were frustrating in their slowness. The drain for our washer was beginning to give us other problems so we made the call. Our plumber came right away because of a cancellation. He took care to listen to our questions about several issues, then went to work clearing the clogs. He showed us what was causing the problems in each drain and gave us great maintenance tips to help us avoid the problems in the future. He was respectful, helpful and friendly. When we asked about a future project in a shower, he gave us a few ideas about ways to approach it when the time comes. My wife and I were smiling when he left because of the care taken to fix our problems and the friendliness of both the person on the phone and the plumber who came to our home.

That is who installed the heating and air conditioning unit that was fairly new when we purchased this house so we just continued to use them and we are very satisfied. I have no idea (of the price). I guess to me it was a good price. They might be more expensive than everybody else, though, you know what I mean? They are friendly.

Not well. Problems with communication with technician and office. Labor and shipping costs for two visits in spite of warranty are high.
Description of Work: Heating system blower fan failed. Unit was purchased new from Bluedot about five years ago. Refrigerant coil failed earlier and had had to be replaced. Blower fan died since cooling system had been used. Technician came out to do a diagnosis. Concluded the fan motor was bad and indicated he would be back yet that evening or the next day. With no communication from the technician re: whether he would return yet that day, I called the office to ask whether we should expect him yet during the day. The office staff indicated they'd call him and find out, but no response came, so someone had to be here in case he showed up. The net result, fan motor replaced under warranty, but labor and shipping, plus the cost of two service calls totaled $240.

We were in the start of a 19 day, 100+ degree heat wave in Topeka when my a/c went out. I called Von Kopfman on or about July 12 and told him of my plight. He came and inspected the a/c himself and the outside unit for the A/c was shot. I told him that I wanted the most efficient York unit he had. I had previously talked to another business in town, one told me $10,000 and one told me $7-8000. Von said there were some rebates available and 0% financing and the cost would be $4500 installed. He said it would be approximately two weeks before they could get to me. On July 15, he called and said he would be here the 17th or 18th. It took one and half days to install the units, my home has never been heated or cooled better. I had 0% financing. It just doesn't get any better than that. Von Kopfman is the best.

While searching Angie's List for providers for the installation of a whole home humidifier, I came across Blue Dot Services of Kansas and I noticed they had a coupon listed. The coupon was for the installation of a whole home humidifier for $299. I called Blue Dot Services of Kansas to inquire further about the details of what this coupon included (model number of humidifier, etc). I spoke to a man named Steve, and was told that he had no knowledge of a coupon for this price. He told me he would have to talk to the owner, and took down my name and phone number and told me he would call me back. That initial conversation took place on a Thursday. Friday and Monday morning passed and I had not received a call back from Steve, so I called back on Monday at noon and asked to speak with him. He reiterated that they didn't know anything about such a deal, but quoted me $350 for the service. I asked why they wouldn't honor their own coupon price and told him I wasn't prepared to do business. He asked me to email him a screen shot of the coupon to prove its existence. I complied with this request, as ridiculous as it was (what kind of a company doesn't know about its own coupons), and sent him the screen shots. I sent that email on Monday just after noon. I received no reply email or return phone call from Steve. Tuesday morning I received a voicemail from a lady at Blue Dot wanting to "confirm my scheduled appointment". Blue Dot and I hadn't even agreed on a price for the service at this point, and no appointment had been scheduled by me. I called back and asked to speak with Steve, but I got his voicemail. I left a message asking him to contact me, and I have yet to receive that call. If this is any indication of the level of customer service provided by Blue Dot Services of Kansas, then I want nothing to do with them. They would not even bother to follow up with a customer that wanted to spend hundreds of dollars with them. I have decided to award my business to another provider. I am spending more than what Blue Dot quoted me, but I am happy to do so because of the attentiveness and professionalism that the other provider demonstrated while I was getting a quote from them. I find it ridiculous that Blue Dot representatives claimed ignorance of THEIR OWN coupon, placed the burden to confirm this coupon on me, and then failed to communicate further with me. Blue Dot must have way too much business to handle a measly humidifier install. Blue Dot Services of Kansas, you have lost a potential customer for life.

Response from Blue Dot Services Of Kansas
Although we would like to, it is unfortunate that we cannot always make potential customers happy. The customer had in fact spoke to our service manager and he was unaware of our coupon on Angie's List. Our service manager did verify the coupon and we did respond that we would honor that coupon. The problem arose when the customer did not want to schedule for approximately one week out. He demanded that the Angie's List ad stated that we would install within 48 hours. The ad actual reads "Buy Now and get it scheduled in 48 hours". This is what we in fact were trying to do. Again, it is unfortunate that we were unable to reach some sort of compromise. We strive to take excellent care of our customers. Susan Flynn- HR Manager, Blue Dot Services

Early morning on 1/16/2014, I heard a sound like running water. I thought it was coming from basement, but couldn't find any thing. Went outside to check exterior faucets for possible leak due to cold weather. Found water satnding on the ground right above where main line enters the house. I went to the water meter and determined water was running so knew I had a broken water line. Called our water service provider and was informed home owner is responsible for line from meter to the house. They recommended a couple of service providers. I called both - basically plumber and excavation companies - never was able to help until following week. I called Blue Dot around 9:30AM. I knew they did interior plumbing but did not know if they also handled exterior excvation. The receptionist was very helpful and they dispatched a serviceman right away. He arrived about 10:30. He determined that it did appear to be a broken main line where the pipe comes into the house. Blue Dot's backhoe equipment was tied up at another site, so Blue Dot arranged to have him and another serviceman manually dig up and repair the line. It was about 20% outside and windy, so not pleasant working conditions. They dug out an area about 4' by 3' and about 4' deep. Repaired the line and also upgraded the piping into the house - used a material that is stronger and better able to handle settling. They also replaced the interior main shut-off valve which was 20 years old and somewhat rusted. We had water service again by 3:45PM. They were very professional, cleaned up the work site, and I think an acceptable cost for the work that was done.

I have been a customer of Blue Dot since Around 2000. They have serviced and installed my AC, heating system, air filtration system, new water heater, and humidifier. In the beginning and up until 2008 they have provided great customer service. After that it all started to go downhill. They started showing up late for scheduled service calls without calling me to tell me they were going to be late. I had to call them only then to be told their serviceman was running late or in a meeting. There was always a different serviceman that showed up and seemed unprepared to service my system. The latest problems occurred when I scheduled an appointment to do a energy audit of my home. The co owner, Von was supposed to come but cancelled. Another appointment was scheduled. After the audit was done I attempted several times to schedule an appointment to have the work done to make my home mored energy efficient. One appointment was scheduled and when I called the day before to confirm Rex was unable to make it. Its a good thing I called. I waited a few weeks and decided to try again to get the service done. I scheduled an appointment several months ahead of time and was told by Rayleen the customer service rep that she would make sure he makes it this time. Well the appointment date came and went with no one showing up. I had taken the whole day off in order. To be here. No one showed. I called Rayleen and asked why Rex did not show. She told me that she had reminded him more than once. I talked with Rex and he said he forgot. Amazing, because Rayleen said she had reminded him the day before the appointment. This all occurred in Sept. 2013. I once again rescheduled. This month I also had my annual service done on my heating system. A different service tech showed once again with a trainee. He told me that I needed a new motor, fan, and gas valve. Estimate was not quoted because their shop did not have any of the parts needed. The tech told me however that he thought it would be around 800 dollars. I decided to get a second opinion from another company. I called Rayleen at Blue dot to tell her this. Later that day I talked with Susan at Blue Dot and also cancelled the energy service work for 10/24. I did this until I could get this other issue resolved first. The tech from another company came out checked everything I told him about. He said that the gas valve indeed had a short any needed replaced but that the motor and fan were in good shape and did not need replaced. I debated for a few days before deciding to post this complaint but I again got phone message from Rayleen at Blue Dot today wanting to confirm an appt to have the energy audit done by Rex tomorrow which I had cancelled. Because I want to get a second opinion it seemed that their demeanor has changed. There is poor communication and for some reason they seem to have problems keeping service techs for long periods of time. I will not be using Blue Dot anymore. I am disappointed and dissatisfied with them.

Response from Blue Dot Services Of Kansas
[Member name removed] has been has been a good customer for years, and it is unfortunate that we were unable to resolve this differently. In response, we did in fact reschedule [member name removed] appts 2 times, but we did call each time. At the same time, [member name removed] called and rescheduled several times. One of our owners, Von did go and perform an energy audit and Rex was following up to schedule the repairs. His department was short handed and that is where the confusion began. [member name removed] was scheduled for annual maintenance in November, but when he called on October 18th and stated he had no heat, Rayleen (our dispatcher) worked frantically to move his appointment up and get him on the schedule that day. She sent Natin (one of our senior techs who have been with Blue Dot since 2002) to take care of [member name removed]. Natin replaced the capacitor, found the gas valve was not working consistently and the bearings in motor were loose. [member name removed] system was installed in 2002 and parts do start wearing out. Natin gave him the recommendations and [member name removed] chose to get second opinion. He also refused to pay at time of service. Natin came back to shop and we billed customer for service call, diagnostic, filter that was replaced and capacitor that was replaced. [member name removed] mailed check for everything but capacitor -denying that it was replaced. Again, note that we were out on a no heat call and there was a reason. Rayleen (feeling that she had a good relationship with [member name removed] up until this point) called and asked about payment for capacitor. [member name removed] said he was getting second opinion and if we did in fact change the capacitor he would pay for it. He called back later that day and spoke with our other dispatcher and wanted her to relay to Rayleen that he apologized and the other company did find a new generic capacitor on unit and he would be sending check for it. After that we recieved this complaint on Angie' List. Evidently, the technician Natin had been correct about gas valve, but in the other companies opinion motor was good. Natin was out on preventative maintenance and gave recommendations for this unit. What he was trying to prevent is this motor going out at an inconvenient time and customer to be without heat when it is 10 below zero and he will be charged overtime or holiday rates. They did excellent work from the person who came out to give us an estimate and he actually gave us an alternative that we could go that was cheaper for us. We were thinking we were probably going to have to spend $6000 or $7000 and he gave us a couple of options and we took one of them. He was very good and very professional. The people that came out and actually installed it were very thorough and very considerate and just very professional.

Purchased the service through a coupon vendor. Everyone from the receptionist, scheduler, and serviceman were very professional and courteous. Charles, the serviceman called about 2 p.m. to appoligize for running late, even though the scheduled window for his arrival was from 1 to 2:30. He appeared to do a very thorough job of inspecting and cleaning our gas furnace. He noted correctly, that we had had the igniter replaced since the unit was installed and probably would get a couple of more years out of the current one before it needed to be replaced. He discoverd the capacitor on the fan motor was weak and recommended replacing it while taking the time to show me what the current one was testing at, and where it should be testing. I felt confident I wasn't being sold anything I didn't need, and was impressed with the number of items to be checked as part of the service including batteries in the thermostat and functionality of our smoke detector. Charles, even took the time to show me how to troubleshoot potential problems with water flow to the humidfier unit. The tune-up took about an hour including the time to replace the capacitor. The cost for replacing the capacitor was $37 and the cost of the coupon for the tune-up was $45, which Blue Dot advertises as a 50% savings. If they normally charge $90 for this service, it's about $20 over a quote I received last week from one of their competitors we have used in the past and been happy with.

It went very well. They were on time, polite, since I am a senior they moved things in basement as needed and put all back when done, even swept floor. One afternoon my part of town lost electrical power and he offered to stay and try to work but I felt it was too dark and someone would be hurt-the momma feeling, told him to just call in and come back the next day as power company had no ideal when it would be back. When job completed he took me through the entire system, drawing arrows to show what I should do at change of season and then explained the programable thermastate to me. The people in the office have been very professional and helpful when I have called. I am very pleased with them.

The overall work was good and the employee was very respectful. The people at the shop were wonderful people to work with. I was serviced within a few hours after I called.
Description of Work: My air conditioner would not run. I tried cleaning the rod in the heater area, changed the filter and even went outside to clean off the out side unit. Nothing I did worked. Blue Dot came into my house, covered his shoes and accidentally found the problem. It was a loose wire because of the vibration of the unit. He went ahead and did a complete check of my air conditioning system and only charged me for the yearly cleaning. They are wonderful people to work with. The salesman/owner Von was exactly on time, excellent salesman, polite, had brochures, knew what he was talking about, answered questions and since he was the first of many that I talked to, he asked me questions and explained a lot I didn't know. His price came in the range I had though it would be, not lowest but certainly not highest. I called him a couple times to get information others brought up and then had come back over for another walk through and more questions. He was very pacient. If it had been just on salespersons I would have had to flip a coin between he & another, they were head and shoulders above all the rest. I would recommend him by name to anyone. We will sign the contract in early Feb and do the work as soon as weather warms in spring UNLESS my old baby of furnace decides other wise this winter, when I would call and all would be moved up.

Initial eval done in May, when unit wasn't performing properly. The rep said it was OK, he couldn't find anything wrong. $200. Second guy, last of July: new A-coil needed: would be $800. Filled unit with gas, $250. Independent guy called, son of a friend: found leak in compressor: fixed it in an hour, filled unit, $200. Neither Blue Dot guy impressed me... but that's what they were trying to do, show me how smart they were. They weren't, just trying to get the bux. And they did, for a while.

Response from Blue Dot Services Of Kansas
1st visit (documented), customer had changed filter after noticing frost on unit, outdoor coils were dirty, Customer said he would clean himself. 2nd visit (documented), technician said possible acoil needed but suggested leak check because unit kept needing freon (could be from coil or somewhere else). Explained to customer and customer decided to just add freon and see how long in lasts. Customer then called in and ordered acoil, then called back and cancelled. Customer did not take technician's advise on getting a leak check which would have diagnosed a leak in the compressor.
