We were referred to Counter Productive by the businesswoman who helped us plan our home remodel. We hired Todd Barnett, the owner of Counter Productive, to replace our counter tops, install a new sink, and install a tile backsplash. We discussed everything we wanted done before hiring him, and he was agreeable with our material choices and our designs. We signed a proposal and made a down payment. The first day went well. Mr. Barnett removed our old counter tops and installed the new ones, along with the new sink. The next day, Mr. Barnett didn't return. My husband called him, and Mr. Barnett said that he thought our tile design was "complicated." This was the design we had shown him and he had agreed to. After the phone call, we were uncertain if he meant to return and try or what he planned. The next day, he didn't return again, and he wouldn't answer our phone calls. Our kitchen was still in shambles, and we needed to know if he planned to finish the job. We called the businesswoman, and she called Mr. Barnett. He told her he would call us back, but he didn't. We called Mr. Barnett every day that week, and he never returned our calls. We finally gave up on him and had to hire another contractor that weekend (who could not come immediately but came as soon as his schedule allowed). Amazingly, Mr. Barnett could not answer the phone during the week our kitchen work was in limbo, but since then he has been on the phone a number of times threatening to take us to court for not paying his bill in full. We paid $800 up front before the job began. We tried talking to Mr. Barnett about making an adjustment to his bill, because we had to pay a premium to get another contractor to come finish his job. Mr. Barnett was very dismissive about our extra expense, stating that we had chosen one of the more expensive tilers in town. He had left us in a desperate situation, and we had to hire a contractor who would come and get the job done so that we could have our kitchen back. Mr. Barnett has since threatened to take us to court and put a lien on our house if he isn't paid in full. His check is in the mail, because it isn't worth enduring more drama with him. The work Mr. Barnett performed for us was adequate, and we have no major complaints about the counter tops or the sink installation. However, it was extremely unprofessional for him to leave our kitchen in chaos and not accept our phones calls. If he had communicated with us first thing that he had no intention of returning, we could have hired a replacement sooner and not lived around a kitchen in disorder for so long. If Mr. Barnett had been professional, he would not have accepted a job he thought was beyond his ability to do. Once he decided it was beyond his abilities, he should have taken the responsibility of hiring someone to do the job well and taken care of his customer. His attitude has been abrasive and unapologetic. It was extremely counterproductive for us to call Counter Productive to help us remodel our kitchen. The name should have warned us!
Description of Work: We were doing a kitchen update with old counter tops removed and new ones installed, installation of a new sink, and new tile backsplashes.
