Tom Burge Jr. came out and assessed our situation after viewing and hearing about all of the issues we were unfortunately dealing with. We really liked him and the plan he came up with so he is who we selected. Because his work is so good, his business is in high demand resulting in a wait before the fence could be built. It was well worth the wait because all of the fencing is PERFECT! Tom's crew was great! 130' of 6' red cedar privacy fence + front gate was built along with another 130' of commercial grade 6' chain link fencing. All was just completed yesterday and we could not be happier with the finished project. Thanks to Tom & his fabulous crew we now feel safer while enjoying our yard again!

Love the fence. Took longer to begin actual work on the fence than I expected. Once work began it was completed quickly. Looks great. I was provided great advice on the design by Mr Burge.i

Fired them before they did any work due to lack of professionalism

Used parts that were not overly damaged. Saved me a bunch of money.

They did an excellent job to make everything fit on that deck.

At the beginning of March we had landscaping done with a new patio by another company. We removed the stairs leading down from the deck. We contacted Burge Fence and was assigned to Graham. We needed a new section immediately to replace the stair area that was removed. Burge responded quickly to install a new section where the 2nd floor gap was left. They also removed the section of fence where a new gate would be installed. It goes down hill from here. After several phone calls over the course of 3 1/2 months we were promised that the gate would be installed by Wednesday, June 1. It wasn't, but a bill for the installation did arrive. My husband called the office (and not Graham this time because of all his broken promises) and the woman he talked to after his explanation of the past 3 1/2 months promised the gate would be installed by the end of the day. It was. The work was finally finished that Friday. If the deck section hadn't been installed immediately I would have given this work an F. Also, four years ago we used Burge for the installation of another gate. Chris handled the job for us and all went well. If you choose to use Burge, I highly suggest asking for Chris. That is the only reason I said I would use them again. Even at that if there are any problems call the office. The woman got the job done immediately.

Overall, this was a good experience. I did have a couple of hiccups. I had to call the office 3 or 4 times to try and get an update on the timeline for my install. I would leave messages and receive no responses. The main office had no idea on the install schedule and I had to get ahold of the actual sales person to get an update. This seemed a little odd. My only other issue was around hidden fees. I live in a rocky area. The sales quote didn't mention anything about extra fees for removing rock. When I talked to the installer, he just said it was in the fine print of the contract. I didn't really like that response and thought the company should be a little more upfront with pricing. Other than that, great experience. I love my fence!

Very well. Met with Jeff Burge and got a firm quote with a 3 to 4 week delivery and install estimate. Fence was installed approximately 2 weeks later. 3 man crew did the entire job except gate install from layout to cleanup in a little over 3 hrs. Gates were installed later as were custom fit to the opening size and slope and welded for stability. Gates were installed approximately 5 days later. The fence is of excellent quality with an electrocoated epoxy primer and acrylic topcoat and has a 20 year warranty. I would definitely recommend Burge to anyone wanting a quality fence at a fair price.

Tom Jr. and his team did a great job putting up our fence. We got three bids on the job and there's was quiete a bit below the other two. But based on the other reviews, I knew they'd do a good job. It took several weeks to get the fence put up after it was scheduled due to them being busy and the rain, but this was understandable.

Tried to contact provider via email. Slow to respond. Ultimately did reply, indicating afternoons the following week were open for estimates. I replied via email to try and pin down a date/time for fencing estimate, still no response. Finally, called provider only to find out availability was quite limited. Inflexible with estimate dates/times. Unfortunately, will take my business elsewhere -- provider's representative on the phone didn't seem at all bothered by this, no attempt to try and work with me. I wish I had the opportunity to give a full review of a real experience with this company; however, it doesn't seem at all concerned with procuring new business, and, as such, the review is necessarily limited.

Went very well. We were able to combine our job with the next door neighbor's. They cleaned up any mess they made, and were timely. They also didn't have any problem with us requesting a last minute change on the gates.

We are very impressed with the service, quality and timeliness from Burge. Chris Burge estimated the job and detailed all costs and timing. After getting estimates from three companies, Burge's cost and timing were the best. From the time we approved the job through completion, Burge met all timing estimates. The workers were friendly, efficient and made sure we were happy with the quality before they left.The fence looks great and we couldn't be happier! We will definitely recommend Burge to others.

The first call and install went great. We closed on the house in Jan. then I went to AZ to return Feb. 14th. I then noticed that on one of my gates a corner was dented in. I called the office and was told someone would be by in 2 weeks. In April I emailed the owner, I never heard back. In May I called the office once again, she informed me then that the owner will return my call that very day. We are now at the end of August and no word. It's not just a dent it is smashed in at the top and my worry is that someone will catch their hand on the jagged piece.

They did a great job. I would highly recommend them. The cleanup was great. I did have an issue with the quoting but he took care of that. He had made a mistake on his quote. It was a quality product and they did everything in the correct time They did a nice job on the cleanup. It was very professional.

Contacted the company in early September. Chris came out, took measurements, and provided me with an estimate of work to be completed. When I inquired about timeline, he told me that because mine was such a small job, that they would fit it in between other jobs and would be completed within less than 3 weeks. The job included setting posts, installing cedar fencing for about 23 ft. and staining. The first part of October, I called and asked when someone would be out to begin my project and I was told that they would be out within the week. Didn't happen. Called the week after that and finally they came out and set the posts in concrete and was told that it would take several days for the concrete to cure. At the end of October I had to call again to see when they would be coming out to install the fencing and it took another week and a half before the fencing was installed. On the afternoon of April 22, I called and said that I was very unhappy with the responsiveness of Burge Fence and would be submitting a complaint through the Better Business Bureau because my fence went all winter without being stained. Surprisingly, within a couple of hours by fence was stained. Chris called to say that it "was funny" that I was on the list of projects to be completed that day. Interesting how that works. The office staff is pleasant and their billing department is quite prompt. No attempt to offer any discount because of the delay in getting this "little" project completed. I would recommend this company only if you enjoy continually calling to see when your project is on their to-do list.

When they came out, they broke part of a fence post, but they said they’d fix it. After it was put up, I noticed that some of the pickets were 5’ and 6’ instead of all 4’ like it was supposed to be. So they came back and fixed that. Then I realized that you could still see through the slats in the fence, which was not how I'd said I wanted it. They also tried to use inferior wood to what I'd chosen. I’d already paid half down on the contract. Tom said I had to change the type of fence altogether and pay more, which I agreed to. He put in the louvered panels, and then the spindles were 5’ again. The supervisor never came to translate for the crew, so there were communication problem. Then he sent out a new crew that could speak English, but they made the fence not level. The fence post moves now, so I don't even know if they used concrete with the post. I told him I needed a permit for the codes administration, so that was more money. The codes people said there were problems with water drainage, so the company came back again. And then there was a gap in the fence. The codes administrator then approved it. I asked the company to come back and fix the aesthetics. He finally called and said I should come to the showroom because I was never satisfied. He insisted I come at 3 pm, even though it wasn’t convenient. I decided not to come by, since I was intimidated, and I called and told them that. I said I wanted to be fair to Tom to be sure it wasn’t him who did this – maybe someone was sabotaging my fence. But now I've received a letter from Tom's company saying they will put a lien on my property soon to collect my bill. I’d like to see them do the fence properly or give me the money back.

The crews were very professional and considerate. I highly recommend the company. Everyone there was easy to work with.

The fence looks fine and the people who installed it where great and nice. The sales people at the office are another story. Emails went unanswered and phone calls went unreturned from the sales guy who I think is one of the owners. The ladies that answered the phone where the only people who were helpful. Also, they told me they would be back Monday to put the gates on and they did not come back until Wednesday. Not a huge deal if they would have actually called me but I had to call and find out. I think they have been around a long time and things probably used to be better but now the customer service and communication is lacking.

Called for an estimate on a fence, they scheduled to come out on Friday Sept 27th at 1pm, then called to say it would be 3:30pm which was no problem, but the guy showed up at 5:30pm. Still I thought it's Friday I understand. Got a good bid and have called no less than 5 times, spoke to the owner at one point and he said his son would call me to schedule the installation. I could not get Tom Jr. to call me back. I thought maybe my job was too small for them to care about but it looks like from some of the other reviews this is common. I have contacted another fence company to get bid. I have been told Burge does a good job I suppose when you can get a hold of someone to install the fence then it may be worth it, I just don't have the time or patience to wait. Nov 11, 2013 - since my last post the fence has been installed. Shortly after my previous post I received a call to me know the crew would be out to install the week of Oct 28th or Nov 4th. Shortly after that I received my contract to sign and send back which I did promptly. The crew was not out on Oct 28th but did arrive on Nov 5th to get the posts installed. They came back out on Sat the 9th to complete the job. The fence looks amazing! I was very impressed with the job they did, the crew was friendly and fast! If you can get over the fact they are not the best communicators they are well worth every penny. I am very happy with they job they did and would recommend them to anyone. Just be aware getting a call back my be a little frustrating. They were also the best price and I received 3 other bids.

I contacted this company because I saw the name on quite a few beautiful fences in my neighborhood. The owner came to my home to do the initial estimate within 2 days. I expressed a concern about a private electrical line that ran along the driveway where I wanted an iron fence installed, knowing that it wouldn't be marked since it was not a public utility. He assured me that it wouldn't be a problem, that the installers would hand-dig all of the post holes in that area. The estimate was one of the more expensive one's I'd received, but the companies with lower estimates included a number of conditions and line items in their contracts. I chose this company to do the work and they told me it might be 3-4 weeks before they would be able to begin. The work began 5 weeks later. I had asked to be notified a day in advance of the work being done, but did not get a call until the day the work began. Fortunately, this was just a mild inconvenience. The gentleman managing the work was familiar with my concerns about the electrical line. The worked was finished over the next 2 weeks. When it came time to stain the wood fence, I was shown samples and felt more comfortable about my color decision. The fence is beautiful. The workers were all courteous and professional and cleaned up at the end of the day. Some reviewers have stated that they had a difficult time getting their phone calls returned, but that was not my experience. Whenever I called, someone picked up the line. I would hire this company again.

We didnt go with Mr.Burge. My wife and I liked Mr.Burge personally as he gave an estimate to both of us (late Fall 2012 for me and early Summer 2013 for my wife). We see his work in our neighborhood all the time and liked him so much that we didn't even bothered to get a second estimate. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a mistake. After we received an estimate in early summer, we changed plans and opted for a no-iron gate option. However, project price/description never really reflected that change. My wife contacted them multiple times and there were several 'estimates' mailed back and forth. Once they stopped responding to her calls, we decided to get another estimate and Guier Fence did a great job for us.

Tom Burge Fence & Iron installed approximately 70' of picket fence to our new home. Once they stated the job they were in and completed in just 2 days. I have had several fences installed and the last two we have used Burge Fence and I must admit this fence far exceeds the others in quality of materials and especially the professionalism installation from the young man who installed it. He started the first day with the fence posts and finished the entire fence 2 days later after the post were ready for the pickets. My wife and I were amazed with how the installer took his time to make sure all posts and pickets were level and plumb while being very courteous explaining to us exactly what he was going to do and when he would be finished. We were originally told they could do our fence in three weeks. We didn't get it installed for 9 weeks. It was really frustrating and I had called another company after waiting two months but then they showed up. The work was excellent and everything was cleaned up well. Plus he had good ideas for connecting up to the neighbor's fence. It has been a week since the fence has been installed and I haven't been asked to pay for it yet which is weird. I'm assuming they will come to collect their money.

Initial estimate went smoothly, Chris Burge was very professional, a very likable guy and the price turned out to be right in line with the competition. I chose them based on that initial meeting, longevity in the community and perhaps past reputation. Overall the quality of the fence turned out good, but it required a lot of close monitoring of the process as well as several calls that I had to initiate related to those issues....ie, several cracked boards, a cracked post, damaged boards installed as if a customer wouldn't notice, etc. I feel like the company lacks in basic communication and most importantly I feel they are very reactive when it comes to issue resolution which I didn't appreciate. Perhaps they have too much on their plate to offer more proactive service that I was expecting when spending over $10K with a company. I do not plan to consider them for a new project that I will be pricing out in the Spring and will likely only deal with them if I have to going forward.

Tom Burge Fence & Iron, Inc. states on its website, "... company brings four generations of excellence to Kansas City". It also says, "...providing personal service and attention, quality workmanship and materials." We experienced none of the aforementioned when we hired the company. They had good reviews on Angie's List when we first looked them up. We saw none of the "F" grade evaluations that they have been recently getting this summer. Tom Burge Sr. was the salesperson we were dealing with. He was a nice person but, he seemed confused at times. He at one time, told us his company didn't build the type of fence we requested after originally showing the fence type on his own fencing pamphlet to us. As we dealt with the company, we found some of the office staff who answered the phones to be rude, sarcastic, uncaring, and not very nice.(At times they seemed stressed out and agitated). After reading several grade evaluations of the company on Angie's List of an "F", they communicated an understanding to us that the office staff was stressed out because "salespersons" were failing to return the calls of customers in a timely fashion or failed to return their calls at all. The irate customers would then give the staff answering the phones a hard time because they were upset. The "domino effect" in this situation was that some office staff was then taking their frustration out on other customers; which is what happened to us. Having worked in a customer service capacity, we did our best to treat those answering the phone at the company with the utmost respect, but we still sometime got sarcastic replies. We were unable to get in touch with Tom Burge Sr. once the job began. He never contacted us once the job was done to see if we liked the job they did or if there was any problem. The work crew that put up our fence, put up pickets with mud on them, shoe tread imprints, white resin stains, and splits in many others. They seemed to be using "castoffs" from other jobs. When we objected to some of the pickets being used, the foreman said he would clean the resin off those with resin, and he would replace any pickets with splits in them. He didn't tell us that he planned to hide the split pickets on the neighbor's side of the fence, but that's what he did. The crew finished the job and left without fixing the problems they said they would. After about a week we noticed that the splits in some of the pickets were getting wider and longer. Some of them also began to warp and bow. We called Burge Fence and was put in contact with "Jeff" in "installation". He immediately let us know that he wasn't the one we should be talking to, but our original salesperson should be handling the problem. He did say that the company would like the chance to correct the problem. We were at the point where we no longer wanted to have anything to do with Burge Fence, but we told Jeff we would get back to him. About an hour later we called and left a message on Jeff''s cell phone that we were willing to give them a chance to correct their work, but he never called us back. We also left a message at the office for our salesperson, Tom Burge Sr.. He never called us back. A few days later we called and withdrew our desire to have them come out and correct their "shoddy" work. Dealing with them was a nightmare we didn't want to continue. *Note the attached pictures of their poor workmanship and bad materials.
