We were all happy with the service. He is the only person we have ever used on Angie's list. Our overall expedience with him was the best. We would use them again in the future.
Description of Work: We used Sunstone Construction to install a garbage disposal, and to fix our dishwasher.
After reviewing Angie's List, I hired Tony for a complete kitchen remodel. The contract stated $2k down, the rest due upon completion, but a week into the project, he asked for another $2k. This pattern continued, always with excuses about how something cost more than he estimated; another thing was more work than he expected; he needed to pay his guys so they could keep working; and threats that he would have to take on other jobs to keep his cash flow going so he could finish my kitchen. I also caught him installing new wiring that wasn't to code (he tried to use cheaper 14-gauge wire for appliances/countertops). He offered to quit when I confronted him on this, but we settled by me having to tell him exactly which wiring to use where. (I hired a professional to do this expecting that I wouldn't have to look up the code myself.) He also carelessly damaged the thermostat and left me with the expense of hiring an HVAC expert and replacing parts and wiring Tony broke. Another big problem occured when he was unable/unwilling to level new cabinets to 1/8", as required by the granite installer. He blamed it on a beam in the basement causing the kitchen floor to drop 1" in 5 weeks. Although I found this difficult to believe, I immediately had an inspector out to investigate the beam. This expert found no evidence that the floors had moved, nor any unusual sloping in the floors, beams, walls, or ceilings. He said the beam had probably been like that for years, was not a structual deficiency, and was an easy fix. Because Tony said he wouldn't finish the cabinetry nor guarantee his work because of the beam, I immediately had the problem fixed that day so he would be more comfortable and finish his work. Instead, he quit. Leaving my kitchen without any plumbing, patches of unfinished drywall, missing electrical outlets and fixture boxes, a missing window, no trimwork, etc. And he pressured me into paying him percentages of the work as it was "completed", so he made a profit and didn't even finish. When another company came out to finish the cabinetry & install the granite countertops, they found that he had used nails instead of screws in some of the cabinets, that some cabinets didn't have any shims supporting them, and that a floor-to-ceiling pantry didn't have ANY SUPPORT under it at all--if I had loaded this with shelving and food, they said it would have fallen off the wall! I shudder to think of what could have happened due to Tony's shoddy workmanship. I'm also wondering what else will be uncovered as other people come in to finish the work.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen remodel, including taking down walls, removing wallpaper, installing header beam, drywall, electrical, plumbing, cabinet installation, HVAC, finish carpentry/trimwork, replacing window.

Response from Sunstone Construction
Wow, The word "slander" comes to mind. It's difficult to defend blatant inaccuracies. I will preface my response by asking anyone who may read this report to notice 16-A reports to my credit. I maintain upmost professionalism when dealing with my customers. Some individuals are unreasonable to the extent that taking a loss and moving on is the unfortunate decision that has to be made in business sometimes. I can say in 21 years of business, this was top three biggest nightmare jobs from the start. Contractors beware of this one. In direct response to the report filed by the member: The contract stated $2K down, balance upon completion. This was a base contract BEFORE the customer added several thousand dollars worth of additional work. Much of this work was added and/or changed after specific phases were complete. This includes a decision by the customer which was not recommended by me to re sheetrock the entire family room/kitchen ceiling after cabinets had been installed. Cabinets were removed to provide for this change. The removal of a load bearing wall that was condidered non bearing by an engineer required substantial framing in the attic area to properly support the space. This work was required and completed as well as a paralam beam instead of a microlam which was also recommended by the engineer. These two items alone cost me over a thousand dollars which the customer refused to pay for. It had to be done in order for it to be right so I did it. I reluctantly agreed not to raise her price as she was unwilling. The extra funding I asked for was just to cover extra costs so we could keep things on schedule, not raising her total price. The customer promised materials, design etc... would be in order for us to do the work. It was a constant lack of supplies provided by the customer. From lighting fixtures to cabinets, delays and changes insued. The countertops werent even investigated by the customer for 6 weeks into the job. With my crew being paid and extra work requested, as a small company, I couldn't finance her project. As far as wiring. New circuits have the option of 12 or 14 guage wire. Some new homes general circuits are wired all in 14g. When the customer preferred 12g for a couple circuits, I quickly agreed to make those changes without extra charge. I've probably completed over 20 kitchen remodels in my years of business. An average amount of outlets and switches is maybe 6-8. This customer had over 28 outlets and switches for a small to moderate size kitchen. When I finally received a schematic for electrical from the customer I was very surprised to see the enormous amount of electrical involved. I completed without any raise in price, which was surely in order to ask for more funding. The thermostat moved 3 inches to the left. The wires werent even disconnected to do this. It was covered to protect it from dust etc... from entering during construction. It just had to be reset due to a sensor located on the exterior of the home. It was not broken, didn't need replacing and no charge was given for moving it. Cabinets: The cabinets were set per design. Screws were used for installation provided by the manufacturer. The only nails used were to attache the face frames together (screws split them) which keeps them perfecly in line with each other. The pantry cabinets came with a base that they rest o provided by the manufacturer. They were installed under the pantry cabs per manufacturer spec and provided screws were used to fasten to the walls in stud locations for proper support. All cabinets were installed to perfect level and fit. The island area, which is located right over where the bearing wall was located was within 1/8" level at installation. This was verified by the flooring contractor whom I spoke with. Upon removal of the load bearing wall in this area, the floor became unstable due to the I-beam support in the basement was broken out of the foundation wall. This problem existed for some time and was not noticed by the customer, an FHA inspector and the structural engineer. When the new cabinets sank over an inch in a five week period after installation, I visually inspected this problem. I re leveled the cabinets (total of over 2 inches from one end to the other) to accomodate granite installation. I immediately notified the customer of this issue and explained the issue, also stating I could not warranty the cabiets staying in level while this problem existed. The main support beam for the house was loose and not supported. You can physically move the beam up and down with light pressure. The customer supposedly had an "expert" come out, within an hour of my phone call to deem there wasn't a problem. Well, I do foundation piering and repairs within my company. If the main beam is broken out of the foundation pocket, it's serious. The sloping of the floors at this cabinet area is very blatant with the naked eye. The shims used to level and re level cabinets were 2x4 pine, 3/4" cedar, 1/4" cedar shims. Over 2 inches of shimming required a combination of these items. After many delays caused by the customer, much more work required and done by myself and my crew without compensation, verbal bashing by the customers Mother, total inability of the customer to attempt to be the "general contractor", lack of materials promised on site, refusal of proper and timely payment, a decision had to be made by me. In 21 years, there has never been a job unfinished. On behalf of my crew, my finances, my sanity and my other faithful customers that have been rescheduled as a result of this project, I chose to move on. As far as profit, theres a lack of that. In fact I lost money on this one. At least the customer got a major remodel, bid extremely reasonable, 90 percent done for a very cheap price. The scope of work was probably in the $18-20K arena she got for about $7K. A very important piece of advise for anyone doing a large remodel. Having a solid plan, materials in order and ability to let the professional be the proffessional. Take their knowledge and advise when appropriate. Be fair and understanding with issues that may surface as long as those issues are unforseen and then discovered. This project didn't even have proper drawings available for design until several weeks into it. Even with all the problems encountered as a result of the customer, we did quality work ahead of schedule including the added work, although I wasn't paid for it. Angie's LIst is a great thing! I have gained many regular customers as a result. If you look at my reports, this is evident. It's somewhat strange to me having to post this response. What else do you do but defend your character and quality of work. I would much prefer providing a quality job for a good value without having to defend myself against blatant inaccuracies. If requested, I have several years of excellent referrals outside of Angie's List that welcome the opportunity to shed positive light and experiences working with my company.

They were very professional and nice. I kind of felt double-teamed - two guys showed up in two separate trucks. They wanted to put 13 piers around my house to fix the problem. The price for a pier is not a bad thing but it seemed an awfully extreme fix for what I had asked them to come out for. I?ve gotten their calls weekly possibly from the guy wanting to know if we had made any decisions yet on what we were going to do. I think they are a harder sell maybe than the other ones I talked to. We have had a couple of people tell us that there is no way we need that extensive work done, so I would probably not consider using them.
Description of Work: Our front porch is sort of pulling away from the house because the soil has been washing out from under the porch into the driveway. I called Sunstone Construction regarding this and got a bid from them.

It was nice meeting you. The second person I brought along was the gentleman who holds the patton on the pier. What better person to explain it's the best pier on the market. Unfortunately there's a couple issues involved here. The patio and the foundation. Fixing the patio is one thing, fixing the sinking foundation is the other. The only way to fix the sinking foundation is with piers. If another contractor has a less expensive way to fix, it probably involves fixing the patio, not the foundation. Unfortunately the lesser price doesn't always fix the problem. In your case, I hope it does. If it doesn't, please call me. Thanks

On September 21st he no showed our appointment. He called on the 22nd to say that he needed to take his wife to hospital. I am very sympathetic about those things and he said he could come by in an hour. He did come by and he looked at the problem and said that I would hear back from him. I haven't heard a word. That is two incidents where he never showed up and I haven't received anything from him. This is very unprofessional. I left him a message this morning telling him that he needed to get a hold of me or the job was finished and I haven't heard back from him.
Description of Work: I called them on September 20th. I made an appointment and he was coming by to evaluate and provide an estimate.

Had appt set for a bid at 4PM. Had a medical emergency and did not make the appt. Called customer next morning and was there within an hour. Measured, explained issues, and repair options. Customer indicated it was an insurance situation. Completed bid within 3 business days as promised, called customer for followup to ensure bid was written with insurance company needs addressed. Received no answer. Then received a voicemail from the customer that she was leaving town for a few days. Left 2nd message with no reply. I appreciate customers timeframes and do my best to accomodate everyone on estimates, even with a very busy schedule. We do quality work in a highly proffessional manner. It's unfortunate an F was so easily given soley on a bid situation where it was unwarranted and an attempt to tarnish a perfect Angie's List record. I wish this particular person the best of luck with another contractor.
