Paul was very responsive and showed up at our agreed upon time. I explained the project which consisted of converting a covered screened in deck to a 3 season room. After going over the plans, Paul inspected the underside of the deck, support footings, rim joist and floor joist construction. After taking a lot of measurements and drawings, Paul sent me a report detailing the outcome of the analysis.
Description of Work: Provided a structural analysis of a deck remodeling project.

I contacted Paul because of a cracked basement wall and potential problem in a wall higher in our home. Paul and I made a couple of phone calls back and forth, which all occurred in an appropriate amount of time. We scheduled an appointment that Paul showed up for on time. He was very professional throughout the evaluation and was thorough in checking out the structure even beyond where our questions were. A few days after the inspection, he sent us a written report of his findings that we could use to determine what action we might want to take on any of his findings. Overall, our experience with Paul was very good. Highly recommend.

Contacted Paul to arrange inspection of foundation of our house. After three weeks of scheduling difficulties and delays in contacting me he finally backed out of the deal stating that he was too busy with other projects and could not perform the inspection. I suppose I am happy that he didn't end up coming anyway since I wouldn't want to have a lousy inspection performed (which I was increasingly worried about given his lack of contact and helpfulness in rescheduling), but it has led to quite a bit of unnecessary delay in getting my house inspected. I would recommend arranging with a more professional individual for an inspection.

Response from Stand Structural Engineering
(Member name removed), I am very sorry to have caused you frustration. I hope that you are able to find an engineer who will meet your needs. I wish you would have shared a little more context regarding our interaction. Much of the delay was caused by the two snow storms that we had recently where is would have been difficult to properly see your foundation. We agreed to try to reschedule when the snow was not piled up around the house. In addition, the only contact information I had for you was an email. While I did not respond immediately in some instances, neither did you. If we could have spoken on the phone, I believe that we may have had an easier time coordinating schedules. I had no way to call you. Once again, I am sorry to have caused you frustration.

Paul actually showed up about 15 mintues before the scheduled time but called to let me know this before he arrived. He went into the attic and was able to quickly determine that rafters would need to be repaired. After finishing his assessment of the roof, he also took a quick look at the home's foundation and determined there weren't issues that he could see. He was done quickly with his assessment and stated he would provide me a written report in a few days. True to what he stated, I received the report detailing his recommendation along with a couple of contractor references for which I asked. Would use Paul's services again and recommend him to others.
Description of Work: Sagging roof line as well as cracked rafters in the attic were the main reasons for the visit. Also examined my foundation to see if he saw any issues but the roof was the main focus of the visit.

Mr. Paul Spears, owner of Stand Structural came to our home in November 2012 per our request. We purposely did not disclose the name of the Foundation Repair Co to Mr. Spears in order to keep an unbiased opinion. Mr. Spears seemed to be very knowledgeable and investigated areas of our home that the other Company has never inspected. Mr. Spears performed his inspection and later sent us a written report of his findings.
Description of Work: We contacted Stand Structural Engineering at the advice of our attorney for an independent assessment of our foundation problems which became much worse after another Co. supposedly "fixed" our foundation with 13 piers & $16000.00. The foundation repair company I will not name at this time due to the fact we most likely will have to sue this other Company in order to force them to make good on their warranty.

Paul Spears was called to determine the cause of a sagging roof ridgeline, and recommend any necessary structural repairs, prior to replacing the roof. He walked the attic area and roof, took measurements and photographs, and submitted a plan for structural reinforcement, along with detailed roof section diagrams. He was very pleasant, informative, and explained in detail the shifting of the home's outer walls and the resultant roof sag. He also made recommendations concerning the roofing materials and installation.
Description of Work: The company was consulted to evaluate my sagging roof.

We were very pleased with the services that Paul Spears provided to us. He is a very knowledgeable person and he made an extra effort to meet with us in the evening, on short notice. He evaluated our home and provided us with a detailed report of his findings and recommendations. Paul is very professional, thorough, and easy to communicate with.
Description of Work: We were concerned about our home's foundation due to some significant cracks in a wall on the lower level of our house. A piering company had already been to our home and proposed that we have it piered in order to resolve the issue. In order to get a second (an un-biased) opinion, we contact Paul Spears with Stand Structural Engineering (who we found via Angie's List).

Excellent read above.
Description of Work: I needed someone to design load baring beams for a remodelling project on my home. After looking thru the yellow pages and on the internet i found that most architects and engineers specialize in multi-story large project. Luckily after speeking with a local architect he stated that I didn't need a architect but an engineer and recommended Paul Spears to me. To my suprise Paul was able to meet me later the same day I called him. He walked thru my project and inspected all areas that I wanted to change. He had to calculate loads for 3 beams for walls I plan to expand or remove. He also designed a hanging beam in the attic so I could expand the bathroom. During the walk thru he quoted a price between 320.00 and 400.00 for his time to do calculations and to supply drawings that I could take to the city for permits. Believe me this was an extremely fair price for the work he had to do. I was also shocked we he stated that he would have the drawing back to me within a week. (If you check most will have them back to you in two weeks.) I received the plans that are very detailed and include all that needs to be done to safely complete my project. In conclusion if you know what you want to change in your house, but need someone who can design the work for you call Paul first. You don't need a architect. Paul can calculate the loads and provide you with drawings so you can complete your project. If you have purchased a house and discovered it has structual problems call Paul. It's hard to find someone with this talent who wants to work on small residential projects, but Paul will work with you and and get to your work quickly.
