Paul was very responsive. Called Sat week of Labor Day, asked if he could do work Sunday. Very professional - BEST PART - HE FIXED MY PROBLEM. I have no leaks after a hard rain. Quote was less than hundreds less than some other chimney people quoted. I recommend his service - was a good experience...
Description of Work: Paul fixed my leaking chimney - regrouted part of chimney, recalked all around where chimney & house meet, and put new cap on chimney.

I have worked with Paul before and he did another wonderful job. I used a red brick this time at Paul's suggestion and it looks beautiful. Paul is prompt, careful, highly skilled as a stone mason, and very proud of his work - he should be! My neighbors have all complimented Paul's work, and enjoyed watching him work so quickly.
Description of Work: My original chimney above the roof line was falling apart. Paul tore down the old chimney and built a new one.

Mr Hopkins was prompt in answering our request for an estimate. He arrived on the date he gave to do the work and performed it well. He told us that he would return in four days to clean the bricks and he came on that day and finished the job. We were quite pleased with his service.
Description of Work: Mr. Hopkins replaced bricks on our chimney. He also recemented loose bricks on a wall fronting our courtyard.

While he may be an excellent mason (I'll never know), I expect someone to bring the necessary tools and to stick to what they say. If he isn't able to call me back, there is no way I'm going to trust him to do work on my house. Overall, I just got a very bad vibe.
Description of Work: I called and scheduled a time for him to come out and provide an estimate. He was able to come out the same evening and take a look at our chimney. He counted the number of courses of brick, took a very brief look at the damaged area and said he would call back and provide an estimate the next day. Sounds good so far except he didn't bring a ladder (had to borrow mine), did not call back, and never took a look at the more damaged areas.

We had Paul come out and quote a repair of our collapsed retaining wall. He was out the same day to check it out and his quote was fair and within range of other quotes. We didn't end up using him, but only because we had a hard decision to make between 3 good contractors!
Description of Work: Quoted rebuilding collapsed retaining wall, roughly 16 ft wide x 5 ft tall x 18" deep, utilizing the existing stacked rock & installing 4 to 5 drain pipes. Furnishing cement, sand, and additional rock to finish project.

I contacted Paul at the suggestion of a chimney sweep that had just cleaned out our 2 fireplaces. Paul returned my call the next day and came for a look at the chimney later that day. I asked him for references and he gave me three, all of which were excellent. I scheduled the work for the next week. Paul and his assistant arrived on time and spent most of the day doing the work. It was terribly hot, but they worked pretty consistently. They were very careful around my bushes and plants when setting up the scafolding and handling the materials used to do the repair.
Description of Work: Repaired top of chimney and sealed all of the outside brick area.

Called to get an estimate for two retaining walls that needed to be rebuilt. Immediately scheduled an appointment to come out to my house the next day, but then he did not show up. I called to inquire the next day and he apologized and came out within a few hours. Said he would get me an estimate in a few days, two weeks later I had still not received any word. I even called again and spoke to him - he assured he would send the estimate but never received one. It shouldn't be this hard to hire someone! Finally gave up.

After choosing this guy based upon all of his positive Angie's List reviews, I called and left a message requesting an estimate. He never called me back. So, a week and a half to two weeks later, I called again and spoke with his wife. She said she'd have him call me back later that day. Never heard from him. After hearing what great work he does, I'm very disappointed.

Paul was asked to replace some deteriorating bricks on our chimney outside. We were told the mortar cap had cracks and therefore water was leaking in a making some of the bricks crumble over time. After the job was completed, several weeks later I noticed the mortar still looked "wet" in places and asked Paul to come look at it. After a week I had to call him back to see if he had looked at the areas that were worked on and he said "you probably need to have it sealed". I asked him why this wasn't mention to begin with and would he have this done if it were his chimney....he told me "yes". I lost trust at that moment as a REAL professional would tell you what is needed from the beginning and return phone calls when a customer asked about the work. Everything changed for me from being a fair experience to a bad after the call to question the mortar looking "wet".

He did a great job! He came right away when I called him. He came out and took a look at it. He wasn't sure how bad it wasn't going to be. He wasn't sure how the brick would be on the inside. He gave us the quote, and told us that if it was going to be more work that he wasn't going to charge us any extra.

It was a good experience. He came out twice for bids on different possibilities (from a complete rebuild with new materials to a patch and tuckpointing only). Once I accepted a bid he was able to start the following Monday and completed the work in two days. I'm very pleased with the results.
Description of Work: He extensively repaired and regrouted two retaining walls, grinding out old mortar, replacing some block with stone, and improving both the function and the appearance of the walls.

Service area is listed as "Entire area except Ray, Lafayette, and Johnson Counties", so I called to arrange an appointment. Wife took my information and said that Paul would call back to set up an appointment. I called back the next day, thinking I had missed his call, and she said she would remind him to call. Day three: Paul called and explained that the service area, in fact, "did NOT include Jackson County" (Blue Springs). An accurate description of the area serviced by Paul A. Hopkins would be beneficial to all concerned.

This was a totally pleasant experience. Paul showed up when he said he would and completed the work in a timely manner. The job looks great and he cleaned up after himself!
Description of Work: We purchased a neglected home as an investment and the chimney and fireplace box was in need of repair. Paul regrouted the firebox, replaced 4 rows of brick on the chimney and plastered inside these rows, replaced the mortar cap, installed a chimney cap, cut out and replaced 20 chipped bricks and sealed it all. As a courtesy he also regrouted some bricks on the front of the garage that were in need of repair.

Some delay in his response to my email inquiry to which Paul was apologetic. The cracked stones were causing significant water leaks into the house. The Brick Doctors recommended replacement of each stone at a cost of $1200-$400 per stone (possibly 12 needing replacement!). That was in addition to an estimate of $8-9000 for the other work. Paul's estimate was much more in line with what I was expecting and hoping to accomplish (repair of the stones as opposed to replacement). Paul was able to start quickly and did great work. Some of the cracks were quite extensive and he smoothed out the irregularities and then used a sealant that can expand or contract. Since the cause of the cracks was uncertain, this may ultimately be a more permanent solution then replacement. The color of the sealant was not a perfect match but my priority was stop the water damage and it is not bothersome to me. Paul did try using three different sealants to as closely blend as possible. Later Paul returned to seal the retaining walls to prevent water absorption.
Description of Work: Worked on a home I recently purchased. Fixed numerous stone ledges that were cracked. Repaired two retaining walls as well as brick archways that were significantly damaged. Sealed retaining walls.

Job went extremely well. Mr. Hopkins arrived on time, got right to work. He is, by the way, a very friendly gentleman, while at the same time very professional in his concern with doing a quality job. His scaffolding was built without damage to the decking that surrounded the chimney, as was his removal of the old bricks. When he inspected the chimney prior to beginning, he discovered that the flue tiles were broken, and asked if he could replace them. I inspected the flue tiles myself, at his invitation and agreed that they were indeed cracked beyond salvaging. He stated that he would not charge extra for labor, just the invoice price of the tiles. Since it would have been impossible to properly secure the chimney caps on cracked and broken flues, it was obvious that they should be replaced, so of course I agreed. The bricks used for replacements were very close in color to the original brick, which were a multi-color gray-black-red combination - very difficult to match exactly. The entire job was completed by 4 pm the next day, as he had originally estimated. His price was exactly what he had estimated, plus the cost of the flue liners (and he showed me the invoice, so I knew he was accurate). This contractor is very good at his job, and I will definitely recommend him to anyone requiring masonry work.
Description of Work: Rebuild the top 3 feet of a 34-year-old double-flue masonry chimney, including replacing flue liners as needed; install chimney caps; waterproof entire chimney structure; remove all debris and leave area in same condition as found..
