Glenn and Rob did a really great job remodeling our 50s-era ranch. We had bought the house while we were in a long leaseback scenario on our prior house, so we knew we wanted to have the family room and kitchen remodeled before we moved in. It was a very time sensitive project, and Glenn and Rob got it done. They basically did a six week construction project in five weeks to accommodate us. The ranch had a huge formal living room, an also large family room, and a good sized eat-in kitchen. We, however, wanted open concept. Glenn and Rob removed the walls between the kitchen and family room, which included the removal of a half bath we didn't need and a wet bar. Glenn knew we wanted the family room to be more open to the living room, but we did not have enough money to open it up completely, so once the bid was already set, he offered to open the wall between the family and living rooms gratis. That was critical because basically it made a room we would never otherwise use one that we could use for parties and reading without being closed off from the rest of the house. There were issues with our granite where a contact Glenn had used for more than ten years resigned without notice and our granite order had not been done correctly. There were issues with the new hardwood floors that were done, but Glenn was very professional and understood that it needed to be fixed. Overall, everyone did a beautiful job.
Description of Work: Remodeled our family room/kitchen and brought it into the 21st century.

We were happy with the estimate and the ideas that Glenn had for the office. They were able to start a little sooner thenplanned so the construction was started just a few weeks after the estimate. Everything went smoothly, each person showed up whenthey said they would, and the whole process was kept as neat as possible. The finished office exceeded our expectations. The woodwork is superb with great attention to detail. The built in wood cabinets are custom built and really complete the look of the room. We were very happy with the entire process.
Description of Work: We had an unfinished room in our lower level finished as an office with built in bookcases and a walk in closet. Tilewas installed throughout the basement and some tile work was done in the master bath. A cedar closet was also built in the basement.

Response from MOUNTAIN CONSTRUCTION
Please look at our grades on work we actually perform, this was simply a free evaluation, we respond to 100's of consultations per year, some are simply not a good fit for us, respectfully, this individual had a project with asbestos remediation, which we do, but is expensive on a 75 year old house, which his project would have exceeded the cost of the house. Thank you, apologies for the confusion.

The owner came to our house to give us a bid for our remodel. He showed up on time and took a look around the house asking us what we wanted to accomplish. He had a couple of good ideas for our kitchen as we discussed the goals. He only took a couple of measurements and didn't draw any pictures of the kitchen or give us anything in writing. He did give us a bid price range (nothing firm) for the job. He said if we selected him he would put everything in writing. His estimate was about $20000 higher than what we eventually paid for the job. We felt like he wasn't professional as other bids we had because he didn't measure the entire job and didn't give us a firm bid in writing. We have heard he does good work, but just didn't feel comfortable with his organization and overall price.

Please look at the work we have actually performed, this was simply a free estimate, we have 100's of free consultations per year, some are simply not a good fit for us, people often hire friends, relatives, or neighbors to do the project. If you look at our service performed grades our pricing is competative with other Angie top 10 groups. Apologies for the confusion. Mountain

Glenn was very punctual with the estimate. He changed it several times as we revised the scope of the project to meet our budget. When we signed the contact his crew would have begun to work immediately but the roofers were here and it was not safe for the carpenters to work on the ground and so their work was delayed for a few days. One of the first things he did was set up a porta-potty. The carpenters, Rob and Terry, first replaced the siding, then moved on to the front entry. They finished with the replacement of the weak wall. During the time they were working I was doing some remodeling of my own and needed a plumber and electrician. I got some estimates and then Glenn got some estimates from the tradesmen he works with and I got the work done for much less than the estimates I received from the tradesmen I had contacted. So Glenn saved me some money there. Mountain Construction is not the least expensive but their workmanship is excellent and overall I am very pleased with the end product. Everyone was very professional, easy to work with and willing to do a little extra to satisfy me.
Description of Work: A weak two story exterior supporting 2 x 4 end wall was removed and replaced with a 2 x 6 wall. Several doors and windows were replaced. The front entry concrete stoop, support posts and door were replaced. About 1/3 of the exterior siding was replaced. Mountain Construction contract included two new windows in the estimate. They also installed four windows I purchased separately. I also provided the front door. In the course of replacing the weak wall we also decided to replace the door to the deck and two other windows. These cost extra.

Glenn and his guys came in and helped me finish a kitchen remodel that was started by another contractor who was unable to finish the job to satisfaction. Glenn did a great job and the job was finished on time for the amount of money we talked about. His main guy Rob was very professional and was quick with decisions to keep the job moving along. The overall experience was very positive.

We interveiwed three different contracters to find one that we were most comfortable with. After we signed a contract, work began and ended within the contacted time frame even though we added on some items that were not in the orgininal contract. I was super pleased with how well they cleaned up each day when they were finished. The quality of work was exceptional. Their focus was to make sure we were happy with the finshed product and we love our new space. We are looking forward to working with them again on a second floor update.
Description of Work: First floor remodel , the remodel included changes in plumbing, heating and air conditioning, new hardwood flooring, kitchen cabinets, countertops, lighting, new stair carpeting and banister, familly room carpeting, new doors and changed ceilings from popcorn to smooth. The house was built in the late 1970's and was opened up into a more modern floor plan.

Two factors initially drew our attention to Mountain Construction. First were the project examples posted on the company website. Second, but more important, was a customer testimonial (here on Angie's, if I remember right), that the work on an initial project had been so good that the customer didn't even seek bids from other companies for a subsequent project. After our seven-weeks' experience of working with Glenn Gruber and his subcontractors, my wife and I feel exactly the same way. Glenn himself is an extremely professional contractor -- kind, insightful, and committed to high-quality work done according to schedule and budget. (He finished our project on-budget and a week earlier than schedule. Moreover, the jobsite was always clean at the end of the day.) He's also extremely conscientious about timely communication by phone, text, email, and face-to-face appointments. During the majority of the project we were in contact on an almost daily basis. As a result, there were really no issues in the job from start to finish. Everything was done spectacularly well and exactly to our expectations, or (frequently) better. From a customer-service point of view, he couldn't possibly be better. Of our three bids for the contract, Mountain Construction's was approximately 5% higher than our second-place bid -- but well worth every penny we paid. We have a walk-up bar and entertainment center far nicer than I anticipated we could afford on our budget, all of it custom-built and as beautiful as what I usually see in much more expensive homes than ours. On that note, Glenn's consultant for color schemes, flooring, fixtures, tile, and granite worked with us very patiently until we all agreed upon choices that are the sort of timeless classics we'd be hard-pressed to improve upon, even if we started over from scratch. Maybe the best part about working with Glenn is his sense for "what works." The question of how to best use of our oddly shaped basement had stumped me and my wife in our conversations with each other, and with other contractors. Almost immediately upon his first visit, Glenn suggested a solution that seemed immediately "right" and proved to be right as the project moved forward. Also, he gave us great advice about not cutting too many corners in the finishing details. So in the end, we have a basement slightly more expensive than we planned, but that will truly be a joy to spend time in during the years ahead. We're already looking ahead to more projects with Glenn. And I seriously doubt we'll take other bids when we do.
Description of Work: We contracted with Glenn Gruber's Mountain Construction to finish our basement -- entertainment room, walk-up bar, bedroom/study, full bath -- and to install utility shelving in the unfinished remainder.

Please refer to our clients we have actually worked with, this was simply a phone conversation. She wanted us to install shelves in her garage someone else left there. We reserve the right to decide who we work with. We had a very respectful, polite, phone conversation, we did recommend another handyman group from Angie. We are primarily a design and build group, room additions, kitchens, master baths, basements, whole house makeovers, and certain handyman referrals, etc. we have hundreds of inquiries, we always answer our phone, and have free consultations. We apologize for any confusion. Thank you. Mountain.

The process went very well. Initial contact was through email. Glenn Gruber called me about a week later for a meeting. His estimate was about 2k higher than the other bids but I wanted attention to detail and I felt he understood my situation. He made a very good impression. Mountain started work a few weeks later and finished in about five days. They found that the old deck was not sufficiently flashed against the house and found the entry point of the leak. Obviously, the ultimate test will be the next time we have a heavy rain from the north but I'm confident that, at this point, the leak has been corrected. Mountain did an excellent job! They cleaned up the job sight well and I would definately recomend them to anyone who wants the job done right.
Description of Work: Mountain Construction was hired to remove and replace a wood deck. Also, while the old deck was removed, inspect for a water leak that occured only when there was severe wind and rain from the north and if possible locate and correct the leak. I was also very specific about wanting attention to detail. I pointed out what I specifically didn't like about the original deck to Glenn. Incorrect fasteners, extended saw kerfs, etc.

We kept in regular communication. Everything agreed to was delivered with skill and fine deportment!
Description of Work: Replaced one large window, and a door/window combination. Workmanship and service was superb! Also, repainted the whole kitchen area, built a superb oak breakfast nook, installed an outside exhaust fan and a new ceiling fan, installed new granite countertops and stone backsplash, installed all new cabinet hardware, repaired a water damaged spot on the hardwood floor and kept the premises clean, kept all promises and expectations and practiced top-notch customer service. A great, satisfying job!

We have built a house before and this is the second substantial remodeling project that we have undertaken on out 70+ year old house. So even though this is my first shot at a review, I feel that am seasoned in building and remodeling projects. Mountain construction was the third company that we were getting a bid from (the first was the company that we were very pleased with after the completion of 1st remodel and the 2nd company was a recommended by a friend). Glen showed up for our first meeting on time, in a clean truck and professionally dressed, which in my book is a great start. We talked about the general scope of the project and we both agreed to proceed with homework of our own and set up a second meeting, this time including my wife. Again, Glen was prompt in his clean truck and professionally dressed. My wife was impressed because he talked to her and with her as much as he talked with me. The next step was a little departure from what I am used to in this type of work. Instead of a long document and long lists of check lists, it was a three page document and a hand shake. That kind of arrangement took a minute to get used to... but we did, and it was time to push on and break ground. Given that we were working with a 70 year old house there was a fair amount of adapting and adjusting as the job progressed. mountain took any curve balls in stride and turned challenges into opportunities. Glenn and his team worked very hard to get the major steps taken care of so the shell could be put up and the wall opened up while being mindful of of the weather and security. Every step of the way there was outstanding communication and willingness to have the addition be as seamless as possible. All of the subs that Mountain Construction brings in were professional and cleaned up after themselves at the end of the day. I would be remiss if i did not mention the lead carpenter/supervisor, his skill level and the pride he takes in his work are a very rare trait in these times! his skill and Glenn's willing to let him work his magic are why people come in the house and say "this addition looks like it is just an extension of the house" (exactly what we were looking for). In summary the whole project from the first meeting , to scheduling, to communication to quality of work were top rate. We are completly satisfied and are looking for the next project to work on with Mountain Construction.
Description of Work: Approximately 14' x 16' room addition inclusive of basement with poured concrete floor. Adjoining 12' x 16' deck with stairs. A basement bathroom addition including a fiberglass shower, water closet and sink.

On the first day they came in and did the demolition and got most of it done that day. When they left for the day I went in to see how it looked and I was amazed at how clean it was. My husband and I have done alot of remodeling ourselves so we know what it can look like after demolition. They had a trailer that they filled up and hauled off so no dumpster in the drive which was very nice. Once the demo was done they realized the original plan did not make the most of the space so they called us into the room and gave us some suggestions and we gave them some suggestions and between all of us we came up with a much better lay out and used pocket doors in 3 doorways to make the most of the space. We are very impressed with Mountain construction. The quality of their work is outstanding! They were the highest bid but we feel we got our moneys worth. Every one of the workers were very professional craftsman, courteous and did beautiful quality work. They all have great pride in their work. The thing that amazed us the most was how clean they kept the work zone. A remodel of this size can be very hard to deal with but they made it an almost enjoyable experience. We will definitely recommend them to others and we are already talking to them about some more work that we want done in the winter. Mountain Construction is AWESOME!!!!!
Description of Work: We had a master bedroom bath remodel done. We had 4 bedrooms and we took one of those bedrooms and turned it into a master bath. The master bedroom was enlarged slightly by knocking out a closet and the old master bath was turned into a walk-in closet with washer dryer. All the plumbing had to be moved, dual sinks, walk-in shower, free standing soaker tub and seperate toilet room and a linen closet. We also added several ights, towel warmer and heated floor. Also had textured ceilings that we changed to flat one of them was a tray ceiling and new carpet in the master bedroom and down the hall and also into an extra bedroom. We tiled the bathroom floor, the area in the closet under the washer dryer, the walk-in shower, the wall around the tub and had a shower door installed. New vanity with granite counters and under mount sinks. In the closet we had a closet unit that they reused and added to with more shelving and hanging and they stained it to match the existing unit and built a shelf over the washer dryer. Also a fresh coat of paint for all of it.

The workers did a great job and used quality materials. There was no extra charge for the bathroom fixtures and we were allowed to pick out what we wanted including the fixtures, faucets, floor tile in the bathroom and the carpet in the bedroom and closet. They even built a bookcase in the corner of the bedroom and installed another one in the dining room where a window had been that was lost because of the addition. Several other small things were added without additional charge, including grab bars in the bathroom, smoke detectors in the other bedrooms to meed code, and installing a light kit on our dining room fan to make the room lighter since it was now minus one window. We didn't even have to buy the light kit because one of the builders had taken it from a fan he had removed from another house. It matched perfectly with our fan! Glenn told us when we signed to allow four months, but due to good weather and an efficient crew, we were in our room in less than three months.
Description of Work: After living in our split level home for 40 years, we knew that we needed a master bedroom and bath on the main level or else move. Not wanting to move, we investigated two companies about building on a bedroom with walk in closet and bath to our existing home. Both companies had good referrals so we chose the one with the best price. The first thing that impressed us about Glenn is he gives a bid and does not add to it as the job goes along, so we knew from the outset exactly how much the project was going to cost. The other company quoted a price that was $10,000 higher and told us that it could go up from there. Not only was the cost the best deal for us, but the quality of the work was excellent. We are so pleased with our new addition. It just what we wanted and more than we expected. .

Glenn is a great guy to work with. He is honest and is free in giving advice, even if it is not what you want to hear. We needed to replace a couple doors and the floor coverings in a rental. Glenn made some good recommendaitons as to product and gave us a good price, although not the cheapest. We went with Mountain because of their previous reputation on Angie's List and our experience - even though the price was about 15% higher than another bid. Glenn and team showed up as promised and got the work done on time despite some very bad weather. We are very satisfied with the product guidance and finished product. We've called Glenn a couple times since and he has actually referrd us to others because they were better suited for the work - the sign of a professional.

We felt very comfortable with Glenn and all the people who worked on our project from beginning to end. They were unfailingly polite, encouraged us through our choices, and were so easy to have around the house. They cleaned up after themselves on a daily basis and the quality of their work was excellent. They listened to us, and incorporated everything we wanted - as well as suggesting things we hadn't thought of. Even with a family situation that caused us to shut down the project for a few days they finished within the original time frame. While we are glad to have the project done we missed them when they were gone; especially our lab who had to say good morning each day and hung out with them on a couple of especially cold days.
Description of Work: Glenn finished our unfinished walkout basement - adding a half bath, opening up a closed stairwell, creating storage areas, installing a gas fireplace, wiring for surround sound and coming up with creative solutions for disguising an ill-placed sump pump.

I interviewed several contractors prior to choosing Mountain Construction last Fall for my sun-room addition. All the bids were competitive, but Glenn had some ideas about improvement options for the adjacent laundry area that the others couldn't come up with. Glenn and his crew were always on time, very courteous and professional. Once that work was done, I had an appraisal completed and received 100% of the cost of the room addition added to the value of my home. After that, and seeing the finished sun-room, I didn't even request bids for the basement refinish. I just asked Glenn to do it. I could not be more pleased with this entire experience. I have a beautiful new sun-room with skylights and hardwood floor, a much bigger laundry area that has no business looking so nice, a newly finished basement with full bath, some structural work in the garage (as a result of the appraiser's recommendation), new roof and gutters (it was time to do that anyway so it tied in nicely with the timing of the room addition), outdoor security lighting, new light fixtures throughout the rest of the house, and tile floor in the kitchen. My only problem now is knowing when to stop. Throughout this process as questions & concerns came up, Glenn handled everything so perfectly that I was always reassured and comfortable with the plan. They worked through the holiday season, rain, snow and blizzard. His carpenter Rob shoveled my sidewalk and backhoe operator Terry showed up at 10:00 pm to clear out my driveway so they could get their trucks in and I could get to work the next day. Glenn was kind to (and patient with) my neighbors as they stopped by to check things out. The price quoted in each contract was the price I paid. Period. This is the most customer-oriented team out there. Really and truly the best decision I could have made. The next project will be a full kitchen remodel and I will definitely use Mountain Construction for that, too.

We had a small, very-dated, kitchen that we wanted to fully renovate by opening up space to our family room, re-locating the exterior door to our deck, moving the laundry area from the kitchen to a different part of the home, implementing our unique cabinet and eating area designs, and re-furbishing the small bathroom off the kitchen to match. We had invested ~$100 in ?Chief Architect Home Designer Suite 9.0? to come up with our preferred design for our new kitchen and laundry room. After reviewing these plans, as well as our budget with Glenn, he gave us a proposal that allowed us to build the EXACT kitchen we wanted and the basic functions of our laundry room AND meet our budget target. Neither of the other two contractors we met gave us a serious proposal upon hearing the scope and rough budget. Glenn and his crew over-delivered on every aspect of the project. His contract was simple and straight forward in price and scope. Glenn remained committed to his contract price despite unanticipated issues including replacing the entire sub-floor. He started the project almost immediately after we agreed on a contract and laid out a timeline of decisions we?d need to make from appliance selection through windows/doors, countertops, floors, lighting, plumbing and painting. His team completed the whole project in 5 WEEKS! after anticipating it to be a 6 week job. Every day the crew left the project area clean and tidy. Each craftsmen was courteous and proud of their workmanship from cabinets, to electrical/plumbing, to tile and painting. Each also commented on how they enjoyed working with Glenn and that we had found a great general contractor who "knows how to treat his customers". They incorporated ?extras? throughout the project like re-using our old cabinets in the garage, running speaker wire and installing speakers in the kitchen and deck, and designing and building a unique banquette, complete with storage, that rivals any we saw in kitchen design magazines (way to go, Rob!). They minimized the disruption of having no kitchen/laundry by re-locating the laundry and installing new sink in the garage in the first 2 days of the project. They also were consistent with their work start and stop times each day. We were beyond comfortable having them in our home with our two small children and dog. All became fast friends. In 5 weeks we went from an idea of a new kitchen to a reality that surpassed our expectations. One word we never heard as we made decisions throughout the project was ?No?. If you are considering any sort of kitchen, bath, bedroom, basement remodel or addition, Mountain Construction should be top on your list.

Glen and Rob were great to work with. Glen provided a detailed estimate making suggestions to make the renovation more attractive. The estimate included all materials and labor with allowances for fixtures, carpeting and laminate Rob visited after we signed the contract and he had additional ideas on how to re-construct the stairs and provide additional clearance for the stairs. The renovations proceeded effortlessly. Within 2 weeks the basement had been wired, HVAC modified, wall board installed, trim and doors were in place and the stairs had been remodeled with additional head space and they had been turned to provide a safer entry to the basement. They cleaned up every day and hauled away all the trash. The painters were very efficient and all surfaces and trim were expertly finished. Carpeting was delayed for a week due to a back order but when it arrived the laminate and carpeting were installed within a day. Glen and Rob returned to make all the necessay touch ups, hardware and door sizing for the carpets. The kitchen renovation went very well also. The large soffit was removed and the cabinets reinstalled and a beautiful crown molding was added above the cabinets and a complimentary glass tile was added below the cabinets and new undercounter lights were added. This was the best contractor experience I have ever had. Thank you Glen and Rob!
Description of Work: Raise the kitchen cabinets to standard height, add crown molding above and add tile and undercounter lighting. Renovate basement with new stairs, electrical, lighting, cable and sound system, HVAC, new home office with french doors, carpeting and wood laminate

They did an excellent job. Mountain Construction provided a detailed bid, whereas with the other two contractors were either late or did not provide enough detail in the bid. For the work, they started quickly and completed the job a little ahead of schedule. The work was very good and they handled themselves professionally. In our 12 years of living in Kansas City, we have worked with many contractors, and Glenn and Mountain Construction have been the best to work with. I will use them again for our next project. I would highly recommend using this company if you have a significant remodeling project.
Description of Work: They completed several projects including new living room ceiling with can lights, regrading of yard to allow for proper water drainage, new bathroom sinks and tile floor, shower tiling and door, remodel of basement ceiling with can lights, and a few other smaller jobs.
