We are Not a handyman company. Angie's List has us stuck us in the 'handyman' category because we offered a Groupon in 2011 to add customer base when starting in the Kansas City area.
We are currently in the middle of a basement remodel with Charlie (owner of Chux Reconstrux). We have been working with him since early November. He has suddenly decided to disappear and walk off the job. I’m writing this review in hopes of getting his attention so he will finish the job and complete the contract that we have signed. We have other suppliers scheduled to come in the next two weeks and we have tons of boxes with flooring, appliances, bathroom fixtures crowding up our living room and garage. Right now, we are stuck in limbo and don’t appreciate the disappearance of our contractor leaving us and many other suppliers in a bind.

Charle is a very personable person, but beware- there is a lack of quality craftsmanship and professionalism once the job begins. The measurements that he gave me for purchasing materials were way off- not my a little, but in some cases double and triple. My husband and I had to leave work on several occasions to buy more materials or return boxes upon boxes of heavy tile. Charlie does not communicate what he needs in advance, but rather, texts or calls you at work and threatens to stop working and charging you for a wasted day because he needs something right now. He doesn't write much of anything down, which contributes to major mistakes. He blames the homeowner or your house for his shoddy work. The paint and tilers were nice enough people, but the language barrier causes very big problems with comprehending instructions (there always seemed to be different workers day to day-- they seemed to hired from a "labor-ready" staffing office) and Charlie is not around ensure the work is done properly. When we would tell Charlie the work was done incorrectly, he would try to sell us on it so they wouldn't have to redo it- but he would redo it each time. He even threatened that he would have to charge us more- for their mistakes!!! Some days no one showed up to work, other days, workers would show up with no prior warning when my teenage daughter was the only person home. In the end, I had to warn them not to return to my property or it would be considered trespassing. Charlie pushes homeowners to use his countertop people, which were ridiculously rude and way overpriced-- if you could even get a price out of them by the time everyone added in their cut. It took weeks to get a price! The painting was quite sloppy- leaving paint on the light switches, shower insert, trim, ceiling, etc. A couple days after they were finally "done" (after having to re-do the tile work time and time again), the grout started breaking up in several places. When we called Charlie about it, he claimed that it was my house that was the problem- even though we have had tile installed in all other bathrooms of the house with no problems. This was his excuse so that he did not have to honor the "warranty" he advertises on his work. I have since has another tiler out to look the shoddy work, he said it was easy to see the that the mortar was mixed incorrectly. This was my very first experience with hiring someone from Angie's List and it was a very, very miserable one unfortunately.

The truth is that the vast majority of customers I've ever worked for have been completely satisfied and that's why there are no negative comments from them out of some 40 to 50 jobs done each year. Otherwise you'd see a lot of negative reviews. Let the reader note all of the rhetorical remarks made by the customer. These are the facts: Installation: Before any tile work started the customer wanted squeaks in the floor taken out. We did that. Then more than enough 2-1/2" coated deck screw used each 6" in both directions to fasten down the sub-floor and Hardy backer board to the floor to prevent any movement or further squeaks. Afterwards there were none. The sub floor and tile underlayment are very firmly bonded to each other per manufacturer installation requirements. We used a decoupling membrane underneath the tile that is specifically there to prevent cracking, which is over and above requirements, adds significant cost, and is a preventative and responsible workmanship measure to assure customer satisfaction. The floor was installed to manufacturers specifications. See progressive photos. Weeks after the work had been completed, the customer reported they 'could see the floor flexing up and down when they walked on it'. If that's the case, it shows a problem with the house beyond the scope of the work that was contracted. In fact, the kitchen downstairs has also cracked which was done sometime way before we were ever there. Who does the day-to-day work: I was personally there every day work was being done. There was extensive wall work done prior to tile Walls need to dry so there will not be anyone one the job those days. Wall paper was removed, a skim coat was added, sanded, walls were primed and painted. The customer was completely satisfied for the duration of the job and after. No 'labor ready' people were ever used for this job. I very rarely use them and not for any kind of skilled labor. No unknown person was ever there. Same 2 men were there working throughout all aspects of the job. They were properly introduced to the customer as the men who would be doing the job. One speaks little English the other speak perfect English. This customer wanted them to do more than they had been instructed to do. ("The painters and tilers were nice people"- were the only people on the job, same 2 guys; and nothing was complained about during the job; only afterward now that she's decided to complain. Changes: Absolutely yes we will change anything an owner wants done. This job was no different. That's not a bad thing. Whatever it takes within reason is what we will do and what was accomplished. The job was paid for by [Member Name Removed] and her husband on time at the end of the job because they were both satisfied with the results. If they hadn't been they would not have paid for the job and that might be understandable had the workmanship suffered. Photos I have provided show the high quality of the job. The customer insists on getting down to the very last tile; you will run out of tiles. Tiles were bought that could not be used or she changed her mind about. I offer customers to get their own tile so they can save money vs. us getting them. Communication: When you accept any job to be done it is an invitation into your home and an invitation to communicate. I'm a very good communicator by text and by phone if necessary. I called because I was invited to call. Good communication is vital. I do not intrude; I'm supposed to be there. A teenaged person was at the house. If a teenager is home from school are we supposed to leave?? If there was a problem, why was it not communicated. Again, I have all text communications preserved to prove otherwise. I will gladly make those available if necessary. Tiles were not there at the start of the job. Comments interpreted as threats is communication for need finish materials. I don't shop for finish materials. I keep all my texts so nearly all communication is documented. I can provide anyone a copy upon request so nothing is taken out of context. Our counter top supplier is well known and very reputable, reliable, professional. They are the best in my opinion so I do encourage them to be used and I don't use any other supplier. It took 2 weeks to communicate the dimensions for the tub surround and 3 vanity tops as she changed her mind over which ones to do and not do. If you don't like the price go elsewhere. It's that simple. At any rate I am not responsible for how anyone interprets their experience with a supply company. Surely they would not last long in business if those allegations were accurate. We do not make owner use our suppliers for finish goods. We only make suggestions as requested. Buy from them or not makes no difference to me. Wall imperfections: We were called back to the job to fix walls scratched and marred by the counter top people [Member Name Removed] used. When I stated we did not have time to repair them, [Member Name Removed] wanted them repaired for nothing. The paint job as well as everything else was done well and accepted and paid for right away after the owner had all weekend to look at it. If it was so sloppy why did they pay for it. After awhile it was plain to see she would complain about everyone she hired and immediately bar them from returning after the job was completed.

Beautiful work. We are very happy that we could get our bathrooms remodeled by Chux's. We were well communicated and informed with the plan and schedule. Chuck and his crew members care and protect our house as if theirs, and very pleasant to work with. Each and every day, the site was neatly organized and cleaned up, so the house with small children or pets would feel very safe. Certainly, there must have been several problems for them to figure out to accommodate our needs and wishes. They went extra miles without hesitation and made our bathroom remodeled beautifully and functional. We enjoyed working with Chuck and his crews.

It turned out really well and I am getting ready to use them again. They were there, pretty much, for six or seven months last year. We started off with a small amount of work and I worked really well with him. His prices were good. He showed up on time and did a great job on cleanup. He did everything he said he would. I did not have to call him back to do touch up because we did a walk-through when it was all done. I was just very happy with him. I work in insurance claims and I have an estimating program so I checked his pricing and he was right where he should be. He was very personable. Anytime I would text or call him I got an immediate response. I know a lot about construction so he and I did really well. He always treated me very professional.
Description of Work: They did a lot of stuff. I used them to build a room out in my shop, which included electrical work. Inside my house they installed engineered wood floors in the master bedroom, the entire living room, kitchen and dining room area. They also did base molding, painting, re-textured ceilings. I also had them do another bedroom.

We contracted with Chux Reconstrux in August to do a kitchen remodel, install hardwood floors, repaint, and replace some carpet in our new home. All in all it was an awful experience for us. The owner, Charlie went from polite and easy going to rude and nasty towards the end of the project. The new kitchen was planned out by IKEA and we delivered the detailed kitchen plan to Chuck at the start of the project. This plan was rarely referenced and many errors were caused because of this. When these errors were pointed out it sometimes they were corrected and other times it became a big argument. Consulting the plan or calling us to check on decisions would have made everyone?s lives easier. The kitchen turned out well for the most part. Charlie and his crew left and never returned to correct some mistakes and minor damage to various cabinets and trim work. We opted for pre-engineered hardwood floors planning on ease of install and durability. I stopped by to review the work after just one room was completed and was disappointed to find out they used a floor pattern that the manufacturer recommends against. Furthermore the floor itself was not properly secured to the subfloor causing it to feel like a trampoline in certain areas. Charlie?s floor guys claimed they could not staple this product which was incorrect as the manufacturer recommends that option and a quick search on google describes the right type of staple. They also refused to glue down the boards. Charlie reassured us that he would fix the issues in the dining room and would make sure the rest of the house didn?t have the same problems. This turned out to be completely false as the rest of the floor is exactly the same. The floor is only a couple months old and every step causes the floor to bounce and creak like 100 year old floorboards. While we were trying to resolve this he also kept telling us how his helper was being threatened by his floor installers and that we had to pay while insisting the floors were perfect. Additionally Charlie deviated from the contract and instead of taking up an area of tile and gluing wood down he had his guys jackhammer several inches of concrete and then replace the subfloor. We were given an $1800 change order for something we never agreed to and were coerced into paying so that we could move into our new home. As of now we have another flooring company bidding us out on ripping up most of the flooring at a major cost to us. Despite having paid more than the original contract we will be forced to spend another 5-8 thousand dollars to have them redone. We feel that Charlie contracted this work out to people without the necessary skills to do the job correctly and we paid the price for that mistake. While we were trying to resolve all of this in an amicable way we constantly received late night emails with sarcastic and rude comments and were constantly badgered to pay before the work was completed to our satisfaction. The entire project was supposed to take a couple weeks and instead took about a month and a half as we never seemed to have his full attention and many partial work days occurred.

I'd like to point out that 'The kitchen turned out well' as stated by this customer. Not mentioned at all by the complaint is that the kitchen plan was altered by the addition of an 8'x8' walk-in pantry that was added after the plans came. It was a significant cost and time increase, as one should expect. I had to modify cabinets to fit things in as changes continued to be made. This is a more than 300 square foot kitchen we're talking about. They added more work to be done. It's impossible to stick to a schedule when changes are made that take significantly more time to accomplish. Also the original flooring they wanted became unavailable from the dealer so the process of finding what they wanted started all over again. Alternate flooring had to be ordered which took additional time. Same routine for the carpeted areas. Additional special-order carpet of a different selection takes time to get. One would come during the day and say one thing then the other at the end of the day and tell me something different. After a few experiences with that I would have to check with both about everything. Time consuming. Extras are due to be paid as the job progresses not at the end of the job. I wasn't paid the final amount due. There was always some miniscule reason why payment had to be put off. Yes you will get complaints from me after asking several times and being put off again and again. The floor I contracted to do was supposed to be a floating floor. That means unattached to the sub-floor. The customer insisted we fasten the floor down, which we did. Gluing is messy and time consuming, I will not use glue. We tried several methods to fasten the floor down. The recommended staples do not work well. Tiny brad nail were used instead. It is not good to use 2 different substrates to secure flooring to: We discovered a 4' wide 3" deep concrete slab that ran for approximately 30' which the tile had been laid on. After the tile was removed we realized the concrete could not be used as a support for the floor. We removed it and painstakingly installed new lumber supports to even the floor out and make it level again because the weight of the old concrete had caused a very noticeable dip in the floor. Afterward we could start with a smooth level surface to put the new flooring on, which is responsible remodeling. That cost was $1800. A reasonable price for 4 men for 2 days plus materials costs for which I was never paid. Unknown conditions or hidden damage is not covered by any contract by anyone. When extra costs are incurred they have to be paid for. I will not pay for your remodeling. There is nothing written anywhere that says I will complete your remodeling at all cost and personal expense or without being appropriately compensated. The floor was done in 2 patterns, both recommended by the manufacturer. As for the statement: "As of now we have another flooring company bidding us out on ripping up most of the flooring at a major cost to us. Despite having paid more than the original contract we will be forced to spend another 5-8 thousand dollars to have them redone." It's been almost a year. Not a word has been said to me about this. Not a call, not a letter, not an attorney, nothing. If I was out $8000 I'd seek damages in a courtroom. Still nothing. Some people don't want to pay, that's all there is to it.

I have worked with contractors before, and was a little concerned going into doing another project. Charlie is a craftsman and a fine finish carpenter; he is also an excellent general contractor who does a great job of managing his subs. Charlie was amazing! He was professional and on the occasion when he did use a sub, he made sure everything was done to our satisfaction. I cannot say enough good things about Charlie. You won't go wrong using him for your project!!
Description of Work: Removed acoustic, texture applied knock-down, installed hardwood floors & baseboard, reconfigured closets, new closet doors and next exterior doors.
Charlie was great to work with through our entire process. We contacted Charlie for a bid to remove a wall to open up our kitchen and reconfigure the existing cabinets. During the initial appointment he was professional and laid back. We didn't have the biggest job but that didn't matter to him, he seemed happy to give us a bid. The bid came back within a day or two and was very competitively priced. When the work started he let us know what was going on and who would be in the house each day. At the end of the day he would make sure the work site was as clean and safe as could be expected. Right after the work started and the wall was removed, we decided we did not want to use the existing cabinets and wanted to redo the entire kitchen. We really liked IKEA cabinets but trying to find a installer that wanted to work with them was challenging for us. Fortunately Charlie likes building and installing IKEA kitchens, and has installed many prior. He gave us a the price for the extra work (which was still a very fair price) and had no problem adding it onto the job. One of the best things about IKEA kitchens is the ability to make changes to get it just the way you want it. During the cabinet installation process we had a few changes that required work to be redone. Charlie was always understanding with the changes. He was very fair with the price and would let us know if a change would add to the cost. He also made suggestions when he thought something would look or function better. At the end of the project we love our new space and the finished product looks amazing. Charlie did an excellent job and we will consider him for any future projects.
Description of Work: We had a kitchen and living room remodel. There was a fireplace removed and wall removed, electrical and HVAC relocation, flooring and new IKEA kitchen cabinets, lighting and plumbing installed. We provided cabinets and finishing materials. Charlie provided labor and building materials.
Charlie was awesome to work with. Arrived on time each morning and made sure his work area was cleaned and sealed off so our dogs couldn't get into stuff they shouldn't. He did an awesome job fixing up our area and working around unexpected challenges. Accommodated changes during the project without a problem. Quality was top notch and he suggested improvements or solutions we hadn't thought of. We will use Charlie again for future projects, he did an awesome job and is great person as well!
Description of Work: Remove two windows from dinning room leading to back yard and installed a sliding door. Removed section of wall between kitchen and dinning room to open up the space. Reapplied moulding and flooring in area previously covered by the wall. Moved lighting switches, painted the kitchen.
Overall Charlie did a great job. We love the final result of our basement. There where several delays that where not really Charlie's fault, it mostly had to deal with the weather effecting his subcontractors jobs. Probably the most important issue that he recognized and corrected was the shotty electrical work the previous owners had done. Charlie does not necessarily finish the basement he gets everything ready for all of the finishes that you buy. This includes counter tops, appliances, lighting, tile, etc. That saved us a lot of money and allowed us to really personalize the space. We are very happy with the way everything turned out and will recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: Remodeled previously partially finished basement. Installed walls, built a wet bar, installed floor and back-splash tile.

Although we didn't end up having the work performed at this point (which had nothing to do with Charlie; we had some other things pop up between the estimate and the time we were going to have the work done) when we do go forward with the project Charlie will get the nod. He was able to get us a quote quickly and a full day ahead of schedule. He was very professional and competitive in his bid and was flexible from a timing and change standpoint when we needed to make some adjustments in what we wanted done. I would strongly encourage anyone looking for remodeling or home repair projects to consider using Chux Reconstrux.

The estimate was fair and reasonable. A delay in materials acquisition on the part of the mfr (not Chuck) caused this project to be delayed and Chux Reconstructs decided he couldn't fit it in to his schedule. I am giving him a fair rating, because I feel that was a fair call on his part. Can't do better than that because the work was not performed. I probably would not use him in the future, because I was SO happy with the gentleman who did complete the project.
Description of Work: Contacted Charles for an estimate on flooring, new deck rails and misc baseboard repairs in my home. He Responded promptly to my request for an estimate, and was on time for the consultation.
Chux Reconstrux did a fantastic job - a new office was created out of a portion of the basement - new doors installed - light fixtures installed and relocated, and power installed in new wall. They arrived on time and did the work within the quoted time and price. Everything was cleaned up nicely afterwards. Deal in confidence with Chux Reconstrux!

I never worked for this person. The stated cost of the project is not 20k - it is zero. I met with her for several estimates. I sent her a separate independent contractor for siding, a separate independent contractor for painting, and two window companies. She bought windows, then cancelled the check to him. I do not want to work for a customer that cancels their payment after making a decision. It was my decision not to work for this person who by-the-way waited six months before writing this review. I don't understand this review at all. Neither of us has been in contact with the other since I wrote the estimate six months ago... and I was never rude to her about anything, however, who has time for this nonsense?

It was a good experience but i didn't use them full time. They were on time, they cleaned up the mess that they had, they finished on time as well.
Description of Work: We used Chux Reconstrux for a big deal purchase to install a ceiling can, tightening a drip on a lick, and installing a blind.
Chuck is a very honest, hard worker! His bids were up-front and on target. I used him initially from a Groupon and was very concerned about going over the time limit. I am on a very limited budget. I have since used him numerous times. Chuck is a meticulous worker that i highly recommend to all.
Description of Work: Chuck did many handyman things around my home. He repaired previously repaired plumbing issues correctly to several toilets. He installed a new kitchen faucets and repaired leaky faucets and shower heads. He also did drywall repair and painting. He installed new thermostats. He repaired broken furniture.

Charlie did a great job and was wonderful to work with. I am sure we were a difficult customer as we are both Architects and were quite particular about how we wanted something to look. Charlie was very patient with us and always spoke with us about how we wanted something to work out. Sometimes though things don't go as one would hope, or you see something done as you asked for it and it just doesn't look right. Charlie would redo it to make it as we wanted it. In any remodeling project once you dig in there are things that one discovers that need to be taken care of that weren't anticipated. He was very reasonable in his charges for any of those extras. I highly recommend him.
Description of Work: We met Charlie through a Groupon and he did a few odds and ends that needed doing, mounted a handrail, fixed some broken panes of glass, and replaced the seal on a disposal. It all went so well that when he offered to help redo our dining room, we took him up on the offer. Our dining room had wooden ceiling beams as well as wood trim around the doors and windows that had been painted years ago and a cheesy plywood wainscoting that we wanted redone. Charlie suggested ways to save money since stripping the wood was so expensive. We ended up replacing the ceiling beams with new stained oak, but before the new beams went up, Charlie was able to replace the electrical wiring to the chandelier from the old knob and tube wiring so common in this age of home. He then put up a new drywall ceiling so now no more cracks in the ceiling. The wainscoting is now a wonderful rift cut oak that looks gorgeous.

Charlie was great: he was on time, worked hard, and tackled two big problems I was having without hesitation. My ceiling fan was making an annoying sounds and was super wobbly. Charlie spent two hours working and it, and a year later, the fan still works perfectly. He also fixed an exterior door (to garage) that was always flying open. Again, a year later, it still stays closed. Charlie worked very hard to complete these task in a reasonable amount of time and was very friendly but professional.

[remove member name], I wanted to thank you for nominating me to Angie's List. I didn't do anything with it for some time but than got more good reviews, now running an ad that I think will do well. I wouldn't have this ability were it not for your help. - Much appreciated. Charlie

We are Not a handyman company. Angie's List has us stuck us in the 'handyman' category because we offered a Groupon in 2011 to add customer base when starting in the Kansas City area.
