They finally fixed the problem but the company would not honor the warranty, they said they only handle warranty for commercial customers and I would have to deal with the manufacture directly.
Description of Work: Unit was bad from the start, would only work intermittently. Finally got someone to work on it and found a bad pilot tube.

See above but we did not appreciate basically being called liars when the tech said he didnt think they did this install. Was an easy fix but they didnt seem to want to work on something they sold. We learned our lesson but missed fireplace during holidays and cold spell in late December-January.
Description of Work: Service call to repair vent free fireplace purchased from them 4 1/2 years ago. Service tech said installation was bad and he didnt think they would install like that. We had paperwork to show we purchased and had installation by them. They said unit not under warranty and would cost maybe up to $400.00 to repair. We finally gave up and felt they did not really look at unit on 12/2 and tried another company who promptly came out and repaired for less than $100.00. A nut was lose and causing gas to leak. We went without unit for almost 2 months and this was an easy fix.

Response from MIDWEST FIREPLACE
The customer had a gas leak at the pilot tube, which caught on fire and burned a wire in half. It was our service techs professional opinion. (numerous years of servicing gas fireplaces, and many hours of technical training) and my own opinion after seeing the pics of the problem. That the correct way to fix the issue is to replace the pilot assembly, Pilot tube and the wire that got burned in half. When we are hired to fix something, we don't just put a bandaid or duct tape on it because the customer doesn't want to pay the amount required to fix it properly. Yes, we could have fixed it temporarily, but that is not how we do things. We suggest they call someone else, if they do not want it repaired the way we think it should be done. The customer failed to mention we did not charge them a service call for the time we spent to come out and diagnose the problem. We have been in business since 1988 and have serviced ten's of thousands of gas fireplaces and logs sets. We rarely ever get a customer that we is not satisfied with our service. This tells me that we must be pretty good at what we do.

Description of Work: We visited the show room with the intent of buying new fireplace/logs. The salesman showed us various fireplaces, discussed costs, and gave us his opinion on whether or not to replace our current fireplace. In addition, he gave us the name of someone who would be able to fix our fireplace. He was very honest and professional. We ended up getting our current fireplace repaired.

Unfortunately they broke the glass front at the warehouse and so project was delayed until after Christmas. They protected the floors from dirt and dust. Would not leave until everything was in proper alignment. Went over basic instructions on how to use. Very nice an efficient gentlemen.

Response from MIDWEST FIREPLACE
Our company policy is. Before we go out to do a estimate. The customer has to come into the store 1st. We used to (and still do) get people that call, wanting us to come out and give them a price on a wood stove or insert. Which we did. And when we told them what they want, is going to cost $3500-$5000.00 they would just say. Oh, never mind, because they had no idea how much a stove or insert cost in the 1st place. Or they were thinking it was only going to cost $1000.00 for some reason. We are a small company that does a lot of business, so we don't have time to waste on people that are just looking for a price. We have found that if someone is really interested, they will take the time to come into our store and look at the product in person. Dave Lapine Owner

We recently added a screened in porch to the back of our home and purchased a natural gas fireplace from Midwest Fireplace. For $150, they came out and installed the fireplace (my contractor said he couldn't do it for that price). In addition, we purchased 85 square feet of stacked stone from them that one of their guys installed in a day on a 11 1/2 foot tall wall. It looks absolutely stunning and we have received a lot of compliments. I called Dave (the owner) several times to ask questions prior to the installation. He was always extremely helpful and polite. His staff that came to my home to install the fireplace, then to install the stone, and then another visit to get the fireplace working properly were all extremely polite and professional. I would definitely recommend them to others looking for this type of work. The plumber installing the gas line was so impressed with their work that he asked for their name and number. Kudos and thanks to Dave, Mark and Jesse.

Description of Work: I was willing to pay what they were asking and in cash for a new fireplace insert. Their NFI certified specialist turned down the job because there are 42 steps from the street to the first level of the house and his guys couldn't carry the 375 lb insert up those stairs. This from someone who said he had jobs at the lake where I live. The lake just celebrated it's 100th anniversary and believe me many of the houses have stairs or difficult entries.

Don't just ask to schedule a call; do explain your situation clearly.
Description of Work: I called to schedule a service call. After discussing the situation, the Midwest person gave me all the information I needed over the telephone. He was very knowledgeable and professional. I was impressed by his honesty in saying, "he didn't like people spending money if it wasn't necessary". If I ever need service or a product, I would return to Midwest "in a heartbeat" and gladly recommend them to others.

Our fireplace wasn't functioning for several months because we had the gas turned off while the chimney was being repaired, and when the chimney contractor went to re-light it, he discovered the thermal couple needed to be replaced. A week before Christmas, Jenny from Midwest Fireplace came out and did not have the correct part. She tried for a few hours to adapt another manufacturers' part to get it working, but it was no use. She really did knock herself out trying to get our fireplace working for the holidays, but finally, she had to go back to the office and order the part. The new thermal couple came in the Friday before Christmas, and on Monday (Christmas Eve), another tech came out and installed it and got the fireplace working. He also took the time to show my husband and me the correct way to use the fireplace and the blower.
Description of Work: Replaced the thermal couple so we could use the fireplace. Cleaned out the fireplace, arranged the logs correctly and gave us a tutorial on how to use this type of fireplace.

They ran into a minor difficulty during installation involving the blower cord being too short, resulting in my 100' outdoor extension cord being trapped up into the flue as part of the permanent installation. I had left my work phone number for them, but they did not call to ask how to handle it, which was poor judgment on their part. Also, they left a cosmetic piece (the "canopy") off the insert, and made no mention of it until a couple days later when I noticed it and called to ask. They promptly brought out the canopy and installed it, and retrieved the extension cord from the chimney. In the end, it was a good installation and all is well. However, the process was harder than it needed to be. I would probably use them again, but would ask a lot more questions and make sure I was around during the installation.
