When their schedule opened up, he sent an email telling me when supplies would be delivered and where. We had discussion about the best location. Dan notified me of the hour the supplies were to be here and they were. So was Dan. The crew arrived early, worked efficiently and did a great job. They were pleasant and worked efficiently to install the project in 1 1/2 days. The deck was finished on a cold day. Dan sent an email to remind me they had hosed off the deck and it would be slippery. It was but I was warned. This was a small project compared to many of the photos I've seen of other work they've done. The service and care was first class nonetheless.
Description of Work: Dan at DW Decks conferred with my brother to design and plan for a deck attached to my townhome - the deck being a retirement gift from my brother. The design was forwarded to me for approval. I went to the showroom and met Dan at which time we made a slight alteration to the plan. He took the initiative to present the revised plan to my brother.

 + 0 moreWe had a wonderful experience with Elite Decks. We met with Wes who walked us through the deck process and gave us recommendations. He also had us come out to the showroom to better understand the building materials to be used. He was specific about the design and made very useful recommendations. Wes also offered several options for the final design at different price points, which was very helpful. We requested that the deck be built by a date certain and they made that happen. The builders showed up by 8:00 am every day and were done between 5:00 and 5:30. The employees all wore similar shirts so you knew they were with Elite Decks. They were courteous and willing to answer questions. If they did not know the answer, they called someone at the home office, who returned our call that day. The crew was professional and on time everyday. Several neighbors commented on the professionalism and punctuality of the crew that worked on the deck. The crew also cleaned up the work site daily. If the crew ran into any problems, we were contacted by Dan who explained the issue and the estimated or actual cost of the work to be done. Dan then confirmed all information in writing and was willing to answer any questions. We ran into a few problems with the existing deck and the crew and home office kept us informed and did excellent work to make the necessary repairs. The deck is beautifully done and has been such a great addition to our home. The design included two gates that are fantastic for our toddler. The deck looks great and feels very safe. Wes came out for the final walk through and made sure everything was to our liking. Elite Decks was very knowledgeable about the city codes and made sure the deck met current code and scheduled the inspection with the city. We absolutely love the deck and would absolutely recommend using Elite Decks.

The crew who did the work were had obviously done this before and went about their individual tasks with little need for direction from the job foreman. On those rare occasions when a question did arise, usually from me, the foreman was quick to respond with an answer. The operations manager for DW was on the job site each day to insure that everything was going OK and that I was satisfied with progress. As another mark of ttheir professionalism the construction crew always left the job site tidy at the end of the day and on the one weekend of the project life they restacked the rather large pile of lumber that had been staged in our driveway to make sure that we would have full access to our garage ---- a real plus for us. The only glitch in the project was a leak that developed at a point where the new porch roof adjoined the existing roof line. The leak was intermittent and therefore hard to find. But the roofing contractor was persistent in his efforts to discover the source of the problem and after maybe half a dozen visits apparently fixed it. The spring rains this year will tell if he was successful.

I had to take time off to meet them, I work at a hospital involving patient treatment and it is not easy to leave during day time so I had to take day off. I had to find replacement while I am gone otherwise patient had to wait. They never bother to send me a quote. They came and took measurements. They did not have the decency to say they will not do the project. They just basically ignore us and never sent us any quote. A word to DW Elite (I do not know what is elite about them), When people are doing project that cost >$30k, they get 3-5 quotes, which means 3-5 times may have to leave their job to meet contractor. When you had to leave your job 4 times, leaving a fifth time becomes extremely difficult specially if you treat patients.

 + 2 moreThe crew consisted of five men were here every day at dawn to start work and finished in less than five days to tear down an existing deck and construct a deck approximately 450 sq ft with pergola. The crew worked effectively as a team and demonstrated a high level of professionalism. We really appreciated the fact that they coordinated directly with the city of Leawood for building code compliance with no issues encountered. We've had many compliments from friends and neighbors on the overall design and construction. The only complaint we have was with some of the materials. We wished that the foreman on the site had rejected some of the irregular decking boards. We realize that would have slowed them down, but they should have insisted that the lumber supplier deliver better quality decking (pressure treated pine). You can tell that better decking pieces were used at the beginning but they settled for lesser quality towards the end of the project. We did complain about this issue, but it was not settled to our satisfaction. After the job was done for each day, the crew cleaned up the area and took all their tools. When the overall job was done, the crew removed all debris and left the area clean. Some nails and screws were scattered about in the yard, but overall the clean up was good. Overall, we were satisfied with the job and would recommend DW Elite but with the advice to make sure all materials are of the same consistent quality. Their cost for the job was competitive and comparable with the other contractors with high scores on Angie's List.

Permitting was included and professionally handled with the city (Overland Park). Flashing and pvc trim was installed along the deck-house interface to prohibit water entry/damage. Some existing rotted wood resulting from the poorly installed previous deck was replaced. I would highly recommend DW Elite Decks to anyone looking for a high quality deck at a fair price. Be aware that the price will most likely not be the lowest.
Description of Work: Removed old deck and built new one. Deck size is approximately 10 ft. x 15 ft, elevated roughly 4 ft. off the ground. Deck is cedar and features set of stairs to grade, full height privacy wall and door (with rounded top and latch) on one side, screw fasteners (not nails), and decorative gravel below.

 + -1 moreI am so happy with my new deck and its quality. The old deck was put on by the builder 15 years ago and was literally falling apart. After watching DW's crew build our new one, I am amazed that the original one even passed city inspection for new structures. DW measured, measured again, then remeasured while building. They leveled everything countless times, vertically and horizontally. They worked together like a well oiled machine - everyone had a specific job to do, and everyone did it. There was no lollygagging around.....these guys were busy constantly, and during cleanup, scoured the ground for any little scraps of anything to be found. My new deck is a thing of excellent, excellent construction and supreme beauty. It's cedar with black aluminum spindles, and perfectly gorgeous. Very pleased with DW and won't hesitate to recommend them to even the pickiest of people. Several weeks later - our painter asked for the name of who built our deck. Said it was the best looking and well made deck he's seen. It goes to say, we passed along Dan and We's name.

Very nice guys running the business: Wes and Dan were very accomodating throughout the sales cycle, but I think there is a need for more detailed notes and to keep better files on build information. The issues or slight complications were adjusted and overall the build went well and the project looks good.
Description of Work: Pergola build: 14' x 16' Western Red Cedar (30 year). Choose from more than 20 finishing cuts to style the end of your boards. Be aware; cuts aren't made in a controlled environment or before delivery - therefore the cut may end up a little different than what you might observe at their handy brick and mortar store. For this reason, the cuts were slightly disappointing, but still up to par for anyone not incredibly meticulous.

I was a little bit satisfied because they had to dig a new footing and put concrete and they didn't spread the dirt out. They left a clump of dirt and I didn't like it, they came and they broke up the dirt and spread it evenly in the low areas of my yard. I have no complaints. They made a very beautiful deck. The price was not cheap, I didn't expect to pay that much.

 + -1 moreDuring the demolition there was a structural issue found with an unrelated part of the house which increased the original bid ($44,500) by $12K. That addition was made in writing and approved by us. The workmanship on the deck and the entire project is flawless, the deck is beautiful, all issues were handled at completion and we are in love with our deck. However when we were presented the final invoice at the completion of the deck the final price was $25K more then originally bid, $13K more then the changes made in writing. A few thousand of this was permits and work done to get the permits which were not ever bid to us or given to us until the last day. The rest was all noted on the invoice as verbally approved date/time. Part of this was my fault for not writing down every single change and cost that we had agreed to but some of these changes were agreed to without giving us a cost so to say we were surprised by the added expense at the end of the project was an understatement. Again, the work is beautiful and the response to a few issues we've had since completion have been handled beautifully however get all changes in writing and this is a learning experience for both the homeowners and the company I think.

Description of Work: We recently had a screened porch along with an open side deck and a large stamped concrete patio built for us by DW Elite Decks. Our house is somewhat older and has some existing structural issues. We also reside in a very affluent community, which is well known for being very strict on not only issuing permits and Architectural Board Review approvals, but also passing the inspections required. We hired an outside architect as required by our local building codes and HOA. He was required to engineer the porch unconventionally due to our design preferences as well as the existing structure of our home. We knew it was a challenging project for any builder. After interviewing three reputable and highly referred companies, we ended up choosing DW Elite Decks. I'm very happy with our decision to use DW Elite Decks. They were not the cheapest, but they weren't the most expensive either. During construction, we ended up running into even more issues with portions of the house structure, areas required to attach the porch and deck. DW made us aware of every problematic issue that arose and gave us a price ahead of time on each change order. They finished the whole project up a week later than originally scheduled but to no fault of theirs. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised it was only a week with the extensive additional unforseen work that came about during construction. DW was able to pass every inspection required by the city the first time which I guess is quite an accomplishment after talking to some neighbors who had major renovations done which required permits. Even talking to the building inspector, he said, "It was not very common for him not to find some kind of correction needed, and that the craftsmanship was very well done." I would recommend DW Elite Decks to anyone looking for a deck, screened porch or stamped concrete patio! They were on time to work every day like clockwork. They thoroughly cleaned up our property neatly every day. They stuck to their estimate start and completion schedule. Their crew was polite and respectful.  + 1 more1) Prompt for coming out for the estimate. Took about a week to get a quotation. 2) Started 2 weeks after promised start date. Not sure why but we weren't in that big of a rush. 3) Completed work on time. 4) Cleaned up as promised. 5) Deck quality was pretty good. Ceiling started buckling at a joint last week. One section of trim along the ceiling was unevenly cut and needs to be replaced. Deck structure and the composite decking were well done. 6) Final bill.. This is where the problems start. We were quoted $23K for the project which was a bit higher than other company's however they seemed to have a good reputation and a nice portfolio. The final total came to over $33K ! We had a couple of small change orders but they should not have totalled more than $1500. The overcharges were for hitting rock while drilling for posts (approx $2500 !) , removing and disposing of a large bush ($900 !) , extra disposal fees, $1500 extra to run power (if I hired my own electrician it would have cost $200), $250 to fix a sprinkler line that they had cut, $700 for an engineers stamp, plus a bunch of little extra charges. All of them had some small grain of legitimacy but we were charged at least 2-3 times as much as normal contractor rates. Also, if you want to pay with a credit card they want to charge you 5% extra (pretty pathetic) Word of advice.. if you dare decide to try these guys, get a fixed price bid. Do not agree to any change orders unless you get the price in writing (they tried to claim they misquoted the price on the gutter and roof). If you are in Johnson County, assume you have rocks underground and have it part of your original quote. Overall it is a shame that a company who is capable of doing quality work has to resort to padding the bill. I literally would have sent them 3 or 4 additional projects if they had been reasonable with the overages.
Description of Work: We had an old wooden deck removed and hauled away and replaced with a 16 x20 covered Evergrain composite deck. The new deck has lighted stairs, new roof structure and a ceiling fan.

 + -1 moreOur deck was 25 years old and in need of repair for safety reasons, as well as being a bit undersized. Wes Barber spent alot of time with us, explaining the means of construction, and the different materials available. He brought samples and a construction model, which helped to see the advantages of all new construction. We decided on a possible new shape and stairs, and Wes then made measurements. We met later that same day at their showroom to see the displays of decks, handrails, and arbors. We especially liked the composite decking and railing, with cedar posts and black aluminum balusters. My wife and I decided then and there to order the deck! The process of the coming work was thoroughly explained, from marking the utilities, the delivery of materials, the teardown and haul-off process, how the construction crew's work day would go, and to cleanup. All that and more was performed flawlessly, commencing the job at least a week sooner than expected, and finishing in three days. The crew was cordial and professional, and took great care around the nearby plants, as well as the existing lawn. They cleaned up perfectly at day's end and job's end. What they did leave behind was one big, handsome improvement to our home! We are very pleased with the design, and with the finishing details on the deck sides and the railings. The arbor is an especially nice addition, and we look forward to dressing it up for spring.
Description of Work: Our deck was completely torn down and replaced. The new deck was custom designed for our needs, and built larger and with the latest materials. An arbor was also built along one side for more privacy.
