Description of Work: Gary rebuilt our bathroom and converted our deck to a covered deck. He did a great job. He worked with us to make sure we got exactly what we were looking for. He met us at stores to help us select the right materials for the job from fixtures to tile.

Description of Work: Garry had done several projects at our old house so we hired him to be the contractor to do 3 bathrooms and the master bedroom suite at our new house. The project was supposed to take 8 weeks and it has taken more than 16 weeks. We wanted to have most of the project completed before we had to actually move in, but the communication from Garry, his organization of sub-contractors, the lack of a critical path of construction (it seemed to change on a day to day basis), and the fact that his two main laborers on the project refused to work a full work day made the project a disaster. Deadlines were consistently not met, schedules and plans were not written down, and the customers who were paying for the project (us!) were put in second or third priority constantly behind his subcontractors and their wishes, work hours, and opinions. We literally paid him off at the end so we could be rid of his lack of management and ignoring our priorities, wishes, and needs. He didn't write things down, MANY errors were made, things had to be redone, and the project drug on forever. When discussions ensued about our concerns Garry acted like an adolescent boy making excuses and at times trying to blame us for things gone wrong. I don't know if he has psychological issues or if he's taken on too many projects that he can't handle, but we would NOT recommend him to anyone. Ever.

Please note date of work. I was trying to solve previous contractor's water problems at the time and was obviously unable to do so.

Description of Work: A rare gem of a contractor!!! I loved working with Garry because he was such a great communicator. SO many times it is hard to get phone calls and emails returned from people you want to give money to help you. Garry ALWAYS responded in a timely manner to my communications, whether emails, texts, or phone calls. Garry was a super-organized contractor. He had a clearly organized contract and didn't nitpick details, was always fair in every way with me. I HIGHLY recommend using Garry Calvin, I would definitely use again. What he did for me was a basement remodel (bedroom, bathroom, closet, hallway). Time spent: about 3 months, cost: about 30 grand.

Description of Work: We originally met Garry in a booth at the KC Remodeling Home Show last year. We were impressed both after talking with him as well as looking the photos of jobs he'd completed. We kept his number handy to use when we decided to start the bid process. We knew we'd have him at least provide an estimate when ready. Before that time, when we looked into various cabinet companies in considering our project, we came across his name again as a good independent general contractor. This was from an outside source - a very reputable local cabinet company -- Shamrock Cabinets. We ended up choosing Garry for various minor projects in a home we purchased as well as a major remodel to put in a completely new kitchen and master bath. This involved removing and rebuilding two walls. Garry took us through the entire process from design to completion. He has a wealth of experience in a very wide range of building and remodeling projects so we trusted he had what it all would take. We are very pleased overall.

Mr. Calvin discussed our project and developed a detailed proposal with labor and materials cost clearly outlined, he met with us again and agreed to project modifications. He assisted if with sources for materials and communicated throughout the project. The renovation crew was capable, courteous and hardworking. Work quality was top notch. Mr. Calvin kept in close contact with the crew to resolve questions. Overall, Mr. Calvin is a polite and knowledgeable contractor who is very clear in project proposals, and provides top quality work. This is the second project he has done for us and I recommend him strongly.

This is the third project Garry has handled for us. A fourth, a major kitchen remodel is now beginning. The staircase turned out as we expected, fantastic. A few minor issues that Garry resolved within our timeframe and to our satisfaction. He is someone you can trust with any project.
Description of Work: We replaced our staircase that was of very common design of the late 1980's with oak end caps and metal ballusters. We discussed the project, met at the material supplier to select exactly what we wanted and then launched the project. Garry addressed every detail with experience and consideration of the customer.

28 years ago I had an 24 volt outdoor, 6', light installed in my driveway. Six weeks ago it quit working so I called an electrician I had worked with in the past and hired him to repair it. He charged me $100 to diagnose the problem as a defective electric eye and charged me $70 to replace it. After several weeks he installed the light but it didn't work. He (the electrician) said he would refund 1/2 my money and I could find someone else to repair it. I had used Garry Calvin last year for a new room in our home and he did a great job so I called for his help. Garry came over and fiddled with the light - told me there was an intermittent short in the electric eye and that he fixed it - no charge and the light is now working. In the future I'll call him!

It was a free estimate. He was very thorough and detail-oriented, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, he was double the cost of other contractors I had got estimates from.

It was my pleasure working with Garry. Not a single day goes by that I do not say to myself how grateful I am for his wise counsel and partnership. I liked his work so much that 3 years later, I hired Garry to remodel my attic/dormer room. We added a master bedroom, sitting area and full bath (shower) upstairs. about $25,000. The carpet is showing its age, but everything else is perfect. I love it still.
Description of Work: I live in an 80 yr + bungalow on the Plaza. I had the original galley kitchen with a tiny breakfast nook and a small "mud room" at the back of the house. I had two outlets, the pipes under the sink would freeze, the appliances were original, the door on the mudroom was plate glass and not secure. The floor was peel and stick squares on top of an old wood floor. I spent many hours (and many years) looking out the back window and dreaming of tearing off the back of the house and enlarging the kitchen. I was claustrophobic in that narrow space. I also wanted a big french door to let in light. I interviewed 3 or 4 contractors and received bids from all. It was the roofline on the back of the house that presented the biggest challenge. I wanted to keep the Craftsman detail of the support braces and match the the detail of the deep facia boards (I really don't know what that is called, but you are welcome to come see for yourself). There was also an upstairs window that had to be worked around. Garry, looked at the project with a builder's eye and knew what had to be done. He could not only gut the kitchen, lay new floor, insulate, re-plumb, upgrade electrical, plan the space, material (cabinet, tile, lighting, fixture) choices, but he also envisioned and planned for the new 500 sq ft addition. The new addition required building permits, codes inspections, roof extension, footings, secure entry during construction, stucco exterior (I did not want that pre-fab stuff), a new french door, lighting and so much more than I could have ever imagined. Garry drew up the design, and gave me a detailed bid in about a week. Garry was not the least expensive, but he was not the most expensive either. But I knew Garry was the best for the job. I chose him first because of his ability to solve the exterior roofline challenge, second because of his demeanor and our shared vision for the job and lastly because I had already done my research and knew the price was reasonable. The price I spent is approximate and it was 10 years ago.

Great! Garry was very informative, professional and helpful from day one. The window project had some minor issues in which Garry quickly took care of with no problems. Included the installation of Pella windows with stained wood on the inside to match our existing wood. The screen porch was larger for us than any previous project. Garry made it an enjoyable process. Our porch includes a colored stamped concrete floor, full screens, recessed lighting, sky lights, tongue and groove ceiling with an additional stamped pad a few feet away for grilling. It's fantastic! Garry proved to have great attention to detail.
Description of Work: Garry performed two projects for us. (1) installation of Pella windows and (2) add on of a screened porch.

(02/16/2010) Nothing but high praise for all aspects of this job! I have spent a lifetime with hospital construction and have dealt with many contractors in high dollar projects so I feel very qualified to judge the abilities of a contractor and Garry is at the top of my list! Photos will be posted upon completion. UPDATE (04/07/2010) My job was completed to our great satisfaction and, I must say, beyond our expectations. My office is not only fully functional, warm when needed and the AC will blow me away! From the aesthetic stand point we are constantly showing the room to our friends and I'm sure we are boring them to distraction... I will post before/after photographs where size will allow and I welcome calls/emails to us at 913-262-4232 or rtstuf@aol.com. We are located at the NW corner of 63rd and Mission Road in Prairie Village. Feel free to give us a call and we will be happy to show you my new office. Contact our Contractor (Garry Calvin) at 816-985-8923.
Description of Work: (02/16/2010) Remodel our screened in porch to an office for my at home business. This is a work in progress but we are very impressed with the effort and progress at this point where the room is enclosed, heated and warm! It is estimated we are two weeks from completion but our experience with Garry has been so favorable I felt the need to list this job in progress. Further comments will be added upon completion but at this point we have high praise for every aspect of this difficult remodeling job! Feel free to call me at 913-722-4002.
