My experience with MVP Electric, Heating & Cooling went very well. We were very pleased with it. They do an exceptional job. He got here when he said he was going to be here. He was on time. He worked and did a great job. He even cleaned up after himself. It was amazing.
Description of Work: I purchased an Angie's Big Deal to get some electrical work done. They installed some light fixtures and rewired the microwave. They came out soon after I purchased the Big Deal. I spent more than the initial price of the Big Deal to get some extra work done.

Electrician spent a lot of time evaluating everything in the house to see if he could 'up sell' me. It was clear he was commission based. He evaluated the dryer outlet that needed to be changed from a 50 amp to a 30 am plug and provided two quote options. $160 or $418.39 depending on my selection. I had already purchased the outlet to be changed out and had just talked with another electrician who gave me a run down of what it would take to change out and a quote by phone. Ultimately, $49 handyman came out and did and excellent job and charged me $49 as it took less than 30 minutes to change out and I already had the part. Disappointing service from MVP, as I really don't like it when I know they are trying to find other things to sell me on instead of offering a fair price for fixing something I called them about. Would not call them in the future based on my experience and the quote I received.

Response from MVP Electric, Heating & Cooling
First- our techs are not paid on commission. They are paid hourly. It is unfortunate the client viewed our complimentary electrical inspection as a way to fish for work. We do that as a service to our clients to prevent future breakdowns and try to head off issues before they become a problem. Most homeowners never test their GFCI receptacles to see if they are working properly- that is one of things we do. Most homeowners never test their smoke detectors either- that is one of the things we do. If we find a deficiency in those areas it is a life safety issue and needs to be addressed. Most clients are thrilled to get those items done before bad things happen. We also advise our clients of areas in their home that should have GFCI protection or smoke detectors where those items are missing. We also check their service panel and grounding system to make sure all is well there. Any recommendations we give are based on life safety, energy savings, or items the client asked us to price. Our tech's job is not to SELL the client anything- They just show the client what needs attention and let them choose to fix as little or as much as they like. I cannot speak to the pricing policies of the handyman. I do know that we use qualified, professional electricians and it costs me more than $49 to have a tech drive to a home and work for 30 minutes. Our (roughly) $160 price included getting there, assessing the situation, and replacing the receptacle. The cost of a new receptacle was included in the price. If the client had chosen to participate in a service agreement with us there would have been a 15% discount as well. Angie's List members also get 10% off, so his end cost would have been quite bit less than the book price of $160. The client didn't see the value in using our services and that is unfortunate for both sides.

They told me what they would do and how much time and money it would cost. They did exactly what was asked in a timely fashion. They were courteous and clean. MVP took the time to explain how the system worked and made recommendations on how to keep the system running smoothly. I would approach them again to work on my house.

I purchased the big deal after speaking with Chip at MVP. I had given him the background and history of my home and electrical system. He told me at that time, it shouldn't be a problem and I could qualify for the Big Deal. At this time, I also scheduled someone to come to my home and spec it out. So I purchased it. The gentleman came out and looked everything over. At that point he gave me the news that I did not qualify for the "simple" upgrade. He gave me an itemized quote and left. I am a single mother on a limited income. Therefore I can not afford to do the upgrade with the extra cost's involved at this time.

Excellent, efficient work by Scott. The only reason he couldn't finish my third problem was because of a junction box that I knew was hidden inside a wall and he couldn't access it. I'll call him back when I cut into the old tongue in groove paneling and find the box.

I was going to have them install a new light fixture, but they asked if I wanted to save and keep the old one as it was unique and matched the architecture of the bathroom. I said yes, and they did it! The only glitch was that I was never sure if I saved anything from the coupon. It might have cost less without the coupon because it did not take long; the repair person was very nice but kept looking through my house and basement to see if there was other opportunity for their employment. It took me awhile to realize he did not need to be doing that to repair just the light fixture. Maybe he was doing it just to make sure wiring was safe.

This was a big job and it went well. Our lead technician, Todd, gave the quote and was the one to lead the actual work which isn't how it always works with contractors but it was very nice to have that continuity. Most of the work was performed by two technicians but at some point I think they realized they wouldn't be done before we moved in and called in a bunch of back-up to do the work--I appreciated the commitment to getting the job done on time. They also handled moving where the power came in to the house and all the communication with the power company--there was some delay in getting this done but I think it was more on the city than MVP. I will say that there were several large holes left in the wall where MVP needed to access wires--they warned me of this beforehand but I was surprised how many there ended up being--not MVP's fault but something to consider if you're getting a re-wire. Overall, I felt like we got an excellent value out of this work.

That wasn't a really good experience. I had to call them to schedule a date. I t took several weeks to have them come and look a the house. The guy came, made all the notes, said he'd take it back to the office to get it scheduled, and then months later I had to call them. They put me on hold and told me that they guy never took any notes back to them and they had to come out and look at it again. They were suppose to pull a permit which we were to pay for so that they could pull our electrical box and they never gave us the permit until later on. I would never recommend them. They just completed the work 3 or 4 weeks ago.

It didn't work out very well. We had them out to give us an estimate and they came out to do some work. When they did that, the technician advised us that something with out furnace was out of code and he recommended that we should replace it. I've had it replaced within the past 2 years. So while we had him here doing some other work, we made an initial agreement for him to replace that because we didn't want to be in any violations with the state. Something was nagging at me so I called the state to ask about the code and they said it was fine and that it wasn't in any violation. It would have costed me $500 had I not made that call. It really bothered me and I wanted him to do some further work but actually I asked him to finish up what he was doing and I didn't have him come back. I ended up spending about $400 or $500 in addition to the big deal cost.

He inspected our 2 year old furnace and founds MANY issues with the install of it and our new A/C unit. He informed us of what was wrong took pictures and suggested before he go any further we contact our installers on the units and have them come out to fix the issues where they went wrong. He of course could do it all for a fee. That's where we start to go wrong. I was very comfortable with the tech and given that lack luster installs I would have preferred MVP to do it all for me so I could be confident it was done right. Well after a couple emails requesting he send me a breakdown of how much it would cost for cleanings and repairs (so I would know how much to get a loan for, yes it's that much damage) and only receiving promises that tonight when he gets to the office he will send it, yet it never makes it to my inbox, I really have no choice to go with someone that will give me a price. I will not say sure fix it to be surprised with a bill more expensive than just re-replacing the unit!

They responded immediately and that was great. We set up an appointment and the electrician came out and based on the big deal, he should have had enough time to do two small projects. It was $98.00 for $225.00. The only one he got to was putting an outlet on the front porch. He did a great job and was very efficient. Then, I had a light fixture where one of the lights didn't work. He removed the light and said it needed a new part. The ceramic thing. He took down the light from the fixture (there were three lights) and removed the middle one. That left me with an ugly fixture. He said I needed to get parts and that I should watch for another deal and then I could get that fixture repaired. He probably spent 30 - 45 minutes when he got here to tell me about their other services and chatting. I do not feel like I got my money's worth and now I have to have another electrician come out and fix my bathroom light and most likely, I will have to buy another fixture. |

MVP was very quick sending someone to do an estimate for my work. I wanted a new bathroom exhaust fan installed. I purchased everything I needed for the work except for the electric wire. I had the fan, the exhaust, switches and covers. The Big deal read THIS OFFER INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING TYPES OF JOBS: Mounting and wiring a new HDTV Installing new lighting dimmers and switches Installing interior or exterior outlets Installing a new ceiling fan or bathroom exhaust fan AND MORE! The estimate I was given was for over $800. After deducting the $225, MVP wanted in excess of $600 additional for work that appears to be covered by the Big Deal. The deal is misleading at best.

The work the client needed done included: running power to a new switch location, running the wiring up to a new location for a bath fan, installing the client provided fan, and venting the fan. New exhaust fan venting codes require us to vent it out of the house requiring a roof penetration and running ductwork from the fan to the roof vent. All of that work for $225 is not a reasonable expectation. And while the ad does list several things the coupon can be used toward it is not meant to imply that it will cover the entire cost of that project- only that it can be used toward it. Every situation is different and they are bid individually.

Our electrician did a good job overall. He had to navigate around some challenges with respect to adding a new outlet. We made a decision to add an outside motion detector and ADD the preventive maintenance plan for our furnaces based on the price he quoted us and the 15 percent savings we would receive with the purchase of this maintenance plan. When we were ready to pay he said he "misquoted" us on the preventive maintenance service because we had more than one furnace. Instead of $550, it would cost us about $800. Very disappointing as we made our decisions on which services to purchase based on the original quote.
