Description of Work: We received a promotion in the mail, and as we have been thinking of doing some remodeling, decided to try the promotion. When we called we found that the promotion ONLY APPLIED TO US CITIZENS; it didn't matter that I am a tax-paying, law-abiding resident alien. Nor did it matter that the mail was addressed to my wife, who IS a US citizen. We were told that both of us had to be citizens. Such blatant discrimination is abhorrent in a country founded on the backs of immigrants. Anyone and everyone whose roots are through immigration to this country should BOYCOTT THIS COMPANY.

You sign up and you can order anything you want at a discount. I'm familiar with signing contracts, and I signed up for an additional discount for a 3 year membership. You normally have 3 days to change your mind and get your money back. With this contract in the fine print, the deal was that signing the document also included signing a waiver that gave up the ability for me to change my mind. As far as I'm concerned, they are predators.

Per website, delivery was running at about 3 weeks. However, we received vacuum within one week! This was our first purchase from Directbuy and we were extremely pleased.

The order was easy. I saved the money. It went straight to my rental house (1000 miles away). I had to wait 4 days, but it was worth it to save the $.
Description of Work: I have used DirectBuy several times. Most recently, the dishwasher in the rental home that I own broke. I was able to get a new dishwasher from Whirlpool for about $60 less than the no-name brands at home depot.

When we arrived for the appointment, my wife and I met the owner who sat us down to begin a written "survey." He immediately began to ask private, personal questions that had nothing to do with visiting the DirectBuy showroom. My wife and I let him know that the questions were unethical and had nothing to do with considering a membership in DirectBuy. We got up and walked out.
Description of Work: DirectBuy is a fee-based membership to purchase home furnishings, home improvement, appliances, lawn & garden, sporting equipment, electronics, jewelry and others. We accepted an invitation to attend an "open house," and we received a "visitor's pass."

I’ve thought a great deal about how to respond to this rating/review. I will try to articulate my feelings and frustration appropriately for anyone considering DirectBuy to factor into their decision to come visit us or not. As the owner of the business and the individual who met with this family, I remember this experience very well. First of all, DirectBuy, Inc has been in business for over 40 years. DirectBuy of Johnson County has been in KC for over 20 years and we have over 10,000 members and an A+ BBB Rating. This family called the BBB, too. As I’m sure you can imagine we have gotten to know every single one of our members very well over their years and decades of buying purchasing products with us. DirectBuy isn’t a one stop shop and our membership isn’t inexpensive. Our members come back to us from everything from furniture, flooring, bathroom products (this family was looking to remodel a bathroom if I remember correctly), cell phones, golf clubs, vehicles, paint, appliances, cabinets, toys, mattresses and everything else they could possibly need. My point is when you’re asking families for their investment in your business and, as an owner, considering whether the family you’re meeting is a good fit for a twenty year business relationship with, you’re naturally going to ask them some questions to get to know each other better. There’s a reason that in the rating they didn’t specify what the questions were. Well, I’ll tell you; “So are you folks married?” Response – “What does that matter?” “Just wanting to get to know you guys better, I guess.” Response – “Yes” “Oh, how long have you been married?” Response – “27 Years. We’re leaving.” That was it. No doubt those are personal question, but put yourself in my shoes. Have you ever met a new family and referred to them as if they were married only to find out later that they are brother/sister? I have. What if they were neighbors or friends or just dating? Can you imagine the reaction I would have received from this family if I had referred to them incorrectly? When you meet someone at a party or a new neighbor are these the types of things you want to learn about each other? They are for me. Think I’m not telling the whole story? You are of course entitled to your opinion, but how could we would have an unbelievably successful run of over 20 years so far with an A+BBB rating if we were offending everyone who came in with uncomfortable, personal questions? The questions came right off a printed survey that we ask every single family that comes in as we get to know each other and how we might be able to help your family. In the thousands of families that I’ve met with and discussed DirectBuy with I can tell you that our business hasn’t been right for everyone and not everyone has joined. That’s for sure. But I’ve never experienced anything like this anywhere in my life. Not in the thousands and thousands and thousands of families I’ve worked with over the years. I asked them to questions and they’ve decided to hurt me as much as they can for doing so. What kind of person would do something like that? What makes them so angry? I promise you that it’s not DirectBuy. I’m just the object of that unhappiness. Please read all the reviews here and I implore you give the most weight to the feedback from families who are members and actually use the service. They will help you determine whether we’re worth checking out for your family or not. I am sorry to this family for offending them as it was certainly not my intent.
