I wanted to live with my master bath reno for a couple of months before I wrote a review. I have to say, I absolutely love it. Handyman Matters took a 1970's carpeted bathroom with tiles coming off the walls and scalloped shell sinks and turned it into a show stopper. The finishings I chose were not easy. For example, the shower is tiled with white subway tile, but I wanted .25" grout lines with charcoal grout. Marc, the craftsman, could not have done a more beautiful job. I also chose decorative tiles across the top and he used a lot of care and thought with how that came together. He thought to ask me things I forgot about, but that had a big impact on the design, for example, how high I wanted the shower head. Marc also had great problem solving skills. For example, I wanted the soffit removed above the sinks, but during demo, Marc discovered that a pipe ran through it up to the bathroom on the second floor. He suggested shrinking the soffit as much as possible and putting my sconces on them and it really looks like I purposely chose this custom touch. I also chose 1" hex tile for the floor. Once again, not easy even in sheets, but Marc was so meticulous and did a beautiful job. To summarize, Handyman matters skim coated textured walls, smoothed the popcorn ceiling, removed a built-in medicine cabinet and restored to smooth, moved light switches, built custom closet doors from solid wood, installed crown moulding, painted all walls, ceiling and doors, installed a new vanity which required a good amount of plumbing adjustment, installed a fan, removed a sliding glass shower door, tiled floors and shower, and installed all new lighting fixtures. All of the craftsmen were on time and I always felt like the project was moving forward. It took about three weeks plus a few days to complete. At the very end, there were a few minor things wrong - both vanity sinks leaked, hot was cold, cold was hot in the shower, and the shower head leaked, but when I called, they came right out to fix it, even on a Saturday once as they worked to get the vanity sink plumbing from leaking. It was really nice to leave the schedule coordinating of the subs to the general contractor, so even when I could have had services done cheaper, we just used the subs from Handyman Matters. For example, Juan Mata did a beautiful job skim coating the walls and ceiling, but that part alone was $2,600. I recently got a quote from another dry waller for $2,000 for a much, much larger area in my house. But once again, overall it was less stressful not having to coordinate my own subs into the project. Here is a rundown of the craftsmen I would recommend: Marc - Marc did a beautiful job on all the tile, had some great design suggestions, and served as the project manager. When something wasn't done right by someone else, he called them back in to do it right before my husband and I even said anything. Marc takes a tremendous amount of pride in his work and has many years of experience. Plus, he's got a great sense of humor and let's face it, it's nice to like these people since they are basically living with you for three weeks. Carlos - Carlos does it all well, plumbing, electrical, woodworking. He helped Marc with the demo and then came back to help with plumbing, electrical, and the closet doors. I would recommend Carlos for ALL plumbing, including installing the finishings. He answered my texts right away, and came back to fix some minor plumbing issues. Chris - Chris did a beautiful job on the crown moulding. What a difference. He is also a door expert and helped cut down doors to accommodate area rugs in my foyer - a totally different project. He does have apprentices with him and Marc had to call Chris back to fix some things his apprentice did not do well/properly. Juan - Juan and his team skim coated the walls and popcorn ceiling and painted everything. They were so friendly and professional and did a beautiful job on the skim coating and popcorn removal. I would, however, recommend Steve for all painting as he has more experience doing just paint and is a little more "crisp". Steve - Steve came in at the very end and painted the closet doors. As I just mentioned, had I to do over, I would want him to do all the painting. The job Juan did is fine, but there are some places along the moulding that could have been more precise. The $13,000 I paid Handman Matters was for labor and materials. The finishings were another $10,000, so this was not a cheap remodel, but I got everything I wanted and would hire Marc back in a heartbeat. Short Story: They made two uninformed bids. We hired them. Then when they realized what they job really was they were unable to perform the work. Long Story: We called them, described the work and made it clear that our primary need was that the work get completed before Thanksgiving. The owner, Laurel, gave us a quote over the phone. We thought that was strange, so we asked that they send someone out to see the area that needed work done so that they could make an educated bid. They were reluctant, but did send the Laurel out the next day. I took her to the attic and explained in detail what the problem was and what we wanted done. She acted like she understood and took several pictures. She came back with a new bid which we accepted. They were unavailable to start for 3-4 days, but assured us that they would be complete before Thanksgiving. When her "top structural guy" showed up to perform the work, he determined that he was not comfortable performing the work without engineering. I informed him that my husband and I are both licensed professional engineers. He still refused to perform the work. We had contact with several other construction groups, none of whom had any trouble understanding what we needed done and were happy to perform the work. Bottom Line: They gave us a bad bid, promised to be done before Thanksgiving, delayed start until 4 days before Thanksgiving, then refused to perform the work. They left us in a real bind to find another contractor to get the work done on time.
Description of Work: We needed an additional beam added into our attic to support the corner of our top bedroom.

This customer had a method in mind and sounded confident, so we did bid the job. When I went on site, I was under the impression that previous contractors would have no problem completing the job. I took pictures and showed it to my craftsman. He could not tell by the pictures. When he went on site, he pointed out several places where the proposed solution would not be recommended. The homeowners had removed a load bearing wall and there was not enough space in the attic to attach a support beam without extensive modifications. I take full responsibility for not having my craftsman go to the bid in the first place. I apologize about any inconvenience that I may have caused this customer. This was definitely my fault that I could not identify possible issues when I came on site. I was honost is saying, that I am not completely sure, however, if anyone could do it Chris could (my craftsman). My expert did not agree with the homeowners solution. He could of done the work the way the homeowner wanted and we would have made money on the job. Instead with his years of experience, he did not feel that what was being proposed was going to last. Although the homeowners are Engineers, they are not Structural engineers. All my craftsman was doing was asking that a Structural Engineer make the call. He even told the homeowner what he thought a Structural Engineer would recommend. Again, I could of proceeded with the, less than acceptable solution, and possibly caused damage down the road. This would have been profits in my pocket. Instead, I did, what I thought was the right thing to do, and that is NOT to do work knowing that it may not be the right solution. I am sorry that the work did not get done by Thanksgiving, however, I hope the job is done right when it gets done. If they get a second option from a Structural Engineer, not only are my craftsmen capable of doing the job, we would be more than happy to do the job. Thank you, Laurie Thompson-owner

He did a superior job and the bedroom and bathroom look great! I was gone when he completed the job, and when I returned the job was completed and you couldn't even tell he had been in the room. The bedroom and bathroom were spotless with no evidence that anyone had worked in there except the beautiful paint job they did. I would definitely recommend this company and will no doubt be using them in the future.

I considered using this 25.00 for 100.00 worth of painting as a way to determine whether I wanted to use them for larger painting needs. Once they came out they initially refused to honor just the 100.00 worth of work unless I had more work for them. It appears the company is family owned and the wife corrected the husband and told him if I wanted just the 100.00 in painting that was fine. He painted two window panes for 100.00 I asked for quotes for other work and it took many weeks to receive it and it was just a few figures without any indication of how he came up with the price. I told him before hand that I had received money from an insurance claim and needed the estimate broken down to make sure it was within industry norms. Very disappointed with the whole process and would not use them for any painting needs. ********UPDATE*********** I did speak with the company after I received the quote in the mail weeks later. A woman from the office called to try to schedule an appointment to do the work. I told her that when the painter came out he did not do any measurements of the space(s) and I just received a quote based on his look around. I told the painter at the time, and the woman who followed up, that this was an insurance claim and I needed a breakdown to make sure the money the insurance company provided would cover the job. Of course, your charges were higher but there was no way for me to do a comparison for what was covered because you did not break it down. Sorry that it did not work out.

The company was flexible about getting work done quickly after estimate. I had the 2 painters for 8 hours for 499$ deal and they were honest that the list I gave that needed painted would not be able to be completed in 1 day. The estimate I got was appropriate for the deal since it took 2.5 days to paint all the areas and only charged an additional 775$ (I got the discounted rate for the entire job). They passed on their discount for paint at $23/gallon. The quality was good. They did not require much prep work by me except removing wall decor. They arrived on time and were flexible with my work schedule. Only minus was cables and electrical cords they disconnected to paint were not plugged back in and the furniture was moved in front of the plugs therefore I had to move my furniture again to plug everything in. I wish they would have had me come and replug in the DVD/TV, etc.. prior to moving the furniture back since I was home and available.

We needed window-pane/baseboard/nail holes/siding repair at several windows, indoors and out. Scott was assigned to work on this for us, and had to come over about 3 occasions for this amount of work. Each time, Scott came when expected and explained the work at different stages. The results look good and professional. Some of the repair was to solve rain leaking to the indoors. Once we have a good rain, we can see if the leaks are solved

Ms Thompson came at the agreed to time to look over the project. When I asked how they would generally approach the project, she seemed unsure. They emailed us a bid along with proof of insurance, etc as requested. The bid was detailed as we'd requested, except one item was quite vague. I asked for clarification. The explanation indicated to me they did not understand the work to be performed because the clarified step contradicted a previous step. I chose to look elsewhere.

It turned out okay and worked out well. I would recommend them to others. I liked that the owner was the one that came out and did the initial first contact to introduce herself and explain the company. She made it easy to follow up with her via text and email. The final price was what I was quoted at the beginning. The plumber and electrician said that some off the repairs the home inspection said I needed were up to code, and they saved me money because I didn’t need the work done. They were very honest and I appreciated that.

They told me that he charges $300 per room and will just discount that off the price. I felt it was a bait and switch and I couldn’t just get the deal that I paid for. The deal never stated the amount of time or per room. He said that it was in the fine print. He was condescending and didn’t seem truthful. I chose not to use the deal and will get a refund. I called Aug 8 to get a estimate on multiple jobs. They were so busy I had to wait a week for them to come out. I scheduled appointment on Aug 16 4 pm. Aug 13 someone showed up at my house, I was out of town and my wife tried to tell him what we needed but did not really know. She ask why he was there and his response was I just do what I am told I do not schedule appointments. He said he would return on the correct date. No one showed up Aug 16 nor have I heard from the company. I think this is poor reflection on them and can only assume it would carry over into the service they would provided. I am in process of hiring another handyman.

There was an obvious error in scheduling. The craftsman was scheduled for the date he arrived. The wife was not aware of the details of the project and thought that a person was coming off of Craig's list. My craftsman attempted to call the husband. He misunderstood that he needed to come back. He truly believed that the customer was expecting someone else. Our free estimating process works 99% of the time. The customer calls the office, the office schedules a craftsman not only on a specific date, but also on a specific time. We have gotten many raving reviews on our excellent communication process. That is not to say that we didn't drop the ball on this one. We obviously did let this customer fall through the cracks. We certainly apologize as this is not our norm. I will be attempting to call this customer myself to apologize. Sincerely, Laurie Thompson-owner
