The tech Mr. Keith C. was professional from start to finish and he did what they said he would do and more. The whole inspecction went good and the presentation was complete and his follow up was good. Mr. Keith C. completed the estimate in several easy to read and understand ways. Way we could add or subtract options and figure the new price without a problem. We were very impressed with this company.
Description of Work: The service technician Mr. Keith C. arrived on time as scheduled. One thing that really impresses me is the communication received from the company. I received calls the day before and the day of the service just letting me know the status. The tech viewed my home visually and with his imaging camera both inside and out. I was very impressed by the detail of the images and with each image being explained. I followed along with him as much as possible without physically going in to the attic areas, and was able to see almost every defect pointed out. However our home is fairly new and we didn't expect many faults, much to our surprise, of course there was a few areas that needed attention. Yes even the brand new homes can benefit from a professional unbiased inspection.

I have been having an upstairs room which has not been heating/cooling to the same degree as the rest of the house. A+ Insulation came out and did a thermo scan of all the rooms of the house and looked at the insulation in the attic. Josie provided me with a lot of information in order to make an informed decision. In the end, I did not proceed with the work only because the information provided me convinced me the work would not cure the temperature in the room. A+ did provide me with the information needed as well as giving me a great overview of my house.
Description of Work: A+ came out to the house to perform an evaluation of my insulation with a focus on a troublesome bedroom

They were running about 15 minutes behind because of traffic, but called to let me know and apologized for being late. This wasn't a problem at all and I very much appreciated the call giving me a heads up. They were very friendly, professional and provided lots of information. Using a thermal gun, they showed me the worst spots on my walls and ceilings as well as taking lots of pictures to show how things looked in the attic. They even suggested parts of the estimate that I could do myself to save money.
Description of Work: They came out to give me an estimate on insulating my attic, knee walls, and vaulted ceilings of the 2 bedrooms upstairs.

I called A+ and two other companies after reading reviews on AL. Estimates were comparable and I went with A+ because of the helpfulness of the staff during the estimate process. For the estimate, Keith had to come out to my place while I was still at home. He called me upon arrival to the house to make sure he could go in without me there and called me again when he left to give me a general report and explain the materials he left for me and thr estimate he would be emailing. The "above and beyond" part of the estimate experience was that upon hearing my elderly dog would be home and likely whine for dinner when he was in the home (close to 5 PM), Keith offered to feed the dog- I talked him through where things were over the phone (including meds) and he got it done. Keith was also extremely patient explaining the aspects of the proposed services and answering all of my questions. The workers arrived on schedule on a Wednesday morning and called me to let me know they were on their way. I received another call when they discovered the second attic entry point they had attempted to create would not work and the owner, Larry, was very helpful explaining the situation, and offered to either finish the second entry (as it still might be useful for some projects) OR take the cost of the instillation of the second entry point off of the day's service and patch/mud the hole. I appreciated his calling me immediately after the issue was discovered and his presentation of options for dealing with it. I had been asked to come by to inspect the work at/near completion but got tied up at a doctors appointment and couldn't make it. The operator at A1 was very helpful- offered to relay the message to the workmen that I would not be coming by and OK'd me simply sending in a check instead of paying during service as they typically require. When I got home from work that night, the second entry to the attic had been patched and mudded as I was told it would be. However, there were a few things left behind by the workmen (roll of plastic tarp and power tool charger), and some of my things had been moved (understandably) to gain better access with a ladder to the vaulted ceiling, but hadn't been returned (like an ottoman, items on the dining room table, etc.) These items were all in fine shape, just not returned to their original places as I would have expected. In addition, there was a bit of spackling rubbed into two of my rugs and a layer of dust from the cellulose all over my kitchen counters and anything really in the open area under the vaulted ceiling. I understood about the dust- the vaulted ceiling insulation instillation involved drilling 2-3 inch holes in the ceiling and pumping in ground up newspaper insullation- so I would expect it to be difficult to get all of it- I've had my wood floors refinished in the past and I understand that that find of dust gets EVERYWHERE and settles out of things over a period of time so it really is difficult to keep things entirely dust free. However, I wish A+ would have stressed that there would be some dust so that I could have done some preventative stashing of items liek fruit and utensils off of the countertops so I wouldn't have had to wash all of those items when I got home. For the spackling in the rugs, the not returning all items where they originated and the forgotten items, I was disappointed. I wrote A+ an email the next night detailing my disappointment. I soon had a response from Keith- my contact from the estimate, who let me know he was personally sorry for my experience and let me know he was passing my report onto Larry, the owner. Larry then called me twice the following week (I was swamped and it took me a few days to get back to him) to offer his apologies and assistance in any cleaning I might have left. I appreciated his persistence in getting ahold of me, his willingness to apologize, and his offer to help. I had already cleaned and returned everything, so his assistance wasn't necessary at that point, but it was an appreciated offer all the same. Later in the week, I recieved another apology in the form of a letter and Home Depot gift card ($20). Overall, I was pleased with the service and product I recieved from A+. The staff were helpful, always friendly and responsive, and acted exactly as I would have expected following my complaint. I would still recommend this company to others, in part becuase in my conversation with Larry I really felt like he was genuinely sorry and wanting to make his business the best he could and appreciated my feedback. For future potential customers, I would just advise, if you have insullation being blown into vaulted ceilings, to expect a layer of dust that will reappear for a while until everything "settles" and to prepare your home appropriately. I am confident A+ will address the source of my concerns and work to provide an even better experience to future customers.
Description of Work: A+ blew cellulose insullation into the attic and vaulted ceiling of my 1950's ranch in Prairie Village. They were originally going to install a second attic access, but the only available closet space didn't end up being a good choice so they replaced the ceiling board and mudded the hole they had cut for the new hatch. As a result, my ceiling insulation went from an estimate R-10 value to R-49 rating.

We exchanged email to discuss the service ahead of time and talk about the items from the energy audit, to decide which ones were worth doing. We also had them come out to the house to do measurements to get a detailed estimate. Finally, on the day of the service, several men worked together quickly to perform all the work. They were dusty as you might expect from working with insulation, but quite polite and pleasant.
Description of Work: They installed a solar attic fan and also sealed all vents, light fixtures, etc. on second floor. We also had them perform some work that had been brought up on an energy audit, including adding attic insulation and insulating a few places that had not been done well. They also installed some weather stripping on our back door.

A Plus is the best contractor I have ever used. Everyone with whom I had contact had demonstrated professionalism and outstanding customer service. The owner, Mike, even took time out of his busy schedule to stop by, check on their progress and answer all of my questions. The crew that performed the work reminded me of a NASCAR pit crew - efficient, quick, expert knowledge and everything was kept super clean. We recommend them not only to those wanting lower energy bills, but also to all other Kansas City contractors so they can learn how to treat the customer right. Kudos A Plus! You guys are awesome!

They did a great job, going up into the attic for an inspection, looking outside at my vents, and did a thermal scan of every room and probably problem areas to show the effectiveness (or lack of) of my house. They were very professional, showed up on time, spent a good deal of time in the attic, and provided a written estimate of what is needed in priority of importance to make any improvements. After a week they provided a followup call to see if this was something I wanted to do that they could provide. They were more than willing to work with me on financing and making it affordable for me. While I declined thier work, it was only because I can do the work myself. I was able to use thier service to show where I needed to work on the house for insulation. Thier thermal scan alone was worth the price (they showed that I had no insulation in one of my walls in the garage and the builders cut short the insulation in one of my daughters walls). Overall, they spent about an hour in my house and were very thourogh ! I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: I had bought an attic inspection and thermal scan from Angies List for this company.

Estimate appointment and scheduled work arrival were punctual. They finished in 1/2 the time they expected to be here. If I had a criticism, it would be that no one from their office called after the job to ask how everything went. Not really a big deal since we were a straight forward job (no major issues to address, etc). But when spending over $1000, we always like to get that nice call-back-warm-and-fuzzy.
Description of Work: Inspection of attic crawl space area, measurement of existing insulation level and inspection of canned lights, chimney and stack pipe cut outs, etc. This old house was very low on insulation. A+ installed blown insulation into the attoc crawl space as well as sealed areas around various cut outs. Also provided us with a magnetic attaic fan cover for the same price as we were able to find on line.

The big deal offer from this company was misleading. The offer was $85 for 200 square feet of insulation however the company has a $650 minimum to come to a home and do any work. They translated the offer to a discount of $175. I might use this company in the future when I decide I want to spend more on insulation.

Response from A+ Insulation
Im sorry to hear the coupon was not clear, as any company we do have a minimum job cost of $650 to cover our cost to get our rig and crew to your home. We will never not honor our angies list deal that you purchased, however if more work is desired then there is a chance the minimum job cost will apply. We will definitly make every effort to make this clear in the future to prevent this from happeneing. Even though this coupon was refunded we will still honor it if that is something you wanted to pursue. Sorry for any inconvience as we look forward to working with you in the future!

On September 19, 2012, we paid in advance for blown-in insulation. We received an email saying the appointment would be delayed because of the high volume of customers. Two months later they still haven't contacted us to make an appointment to do the work. We replied to a "Big Deal" and paid $85 in advance for 250 sq.ft. of blown-in attic insulation. The estimate indicated we needed our entire attic insulation improved, at a cost of almost $2000. We had previously received a similar estimate from another contractor. Since we paid a deposit in advance, we thought we were stuck with this contractor. We felt like it was a rip-off, with them claiming to give a great deal, when it was just a way to get new business at regular prices. When we asked if we could get a refund, we were told to get it from Angie's List.

Overall everything went well, I really like the Big Deals because you can get a service at a great cost. I would recommend A+ Insulation to anyone.
Description of Work: Purchased the deal through angies list for my girl friend. They came out and gave an estimate which she aceppted. On the day they were to blow the insulation the crew was about an hour late due to a meeting which I can understand. The three that showed up were very perfesional and apoligized for being late. after laying down plastic and getting everything set up they went to work sealing the duct work and extending a vent hose from the bathroom. When that was done they began blowing the insulationwhich didn't take very long. They then began vaccuming and rolling up the plastic. Altogether it took about 2 hours and the house is a lot warmer now it was well worth it.

The energy evaluation was fascinating. The technology used to identify the most glaring energy flaws in my home was "new age." Every step of the process was explained to me in detail. I learned quite a lot during the estimate/bid process. The guys who did the work arrived on time, ensured the least amount of mess, explained each facet of their work and showed me digital photos of what they did in my attic. Clean up was performed as promised, and I am a warm, happy customer.
Description of Work: Now that Autumn chill has arrived, I am so pleased that I engaged A+ Insulation to insulate my attic. I would definitely recommend this company. They closed holes in my attic where squirrels, birds and bats had been entering. I feel that the attention A+ Insulation spent on insulating around ceiling fans, ceiling lighting, my attic fan and the attic access door was exceptional attention to detail.

Very professional. Prompt and courteous. Knowledge was impressive. State of the art equipment. My only complaint is the incessant phone calls and emails after the audit soliciting further business. It has been months since our audit and we are still getting calls. I understand a single follow up call, but come on, we have the business' number! The never-ending follow up calls could almost be on the verge of harrassment. Other than that, this is a great company that seems to know its stuff.

The company representative arrived on October 8th around the appointed time and introduced himself. I directed him to the entry to our attic, asked him if he required any assistance, described the configuration of our attic, saying that it was quite straight forward. It covers the top of four rooms that are adjacent with a short hallway between each pair of rooms. He assured me that it would be no trouble. He went up into the attic, was there about 15-20 minutes, came back down and said he was ready to discuss our needs. I told him we were interested in the installation that was offered on Angie's List. He sat down and began he "bait and switch". He took out a series of photos illustrating the amount and thickness of our current insulation and that historically that amount had been the minimal that was required and that new house construction required more. He proceeded to take me through the various grades and types of insulation and how his company only offered the finest which was fiberglass by Corning and said that the alternative was merely chopped paper and that for numerous reasons that he explained it was substandard. I then asked him what the various grades of inulation were as applied to new housing versus existing housing. His initial estimate of the work we would "require" was in excess of $700. I asked him to show me his calculations. He said that the approximate area was around 800 square feet and that their $85 coupon that we purchased was only good for the minimum grade thickness of insulation and based on the area to cover it would only give us 2 inches of insulation. He took me through a myriad of both terms and brief calculations to substantiate the need for much more insulation than their coupon offered. I told him that what the coupon offered would be fine. He appeared stunned and then proceeded to tell me that it would not be cost effective for his company and how it cost them $174 just to come out to do the installation. I said "I see" . I told him we would still like what was offered on Angie's List and how soon could them come out. He said the October 22nd. I said, what would be the earliest time could arrive and he said 8:00. I said fine, we will be here. He closed up his folder, shook my hand and I told him we look forward to their work, and he left. Later that day my wife and I had planned to leave town and we did. We came back the night before our expected work to be done in anticipation of our work being done. When we returned, there had been one message from the company on my wife's answering service. The message indicated that someone from the company wanted to speak to us about what the salesman had said. The salesman had said that a service manager accompanied each crew on each job to assure the client was satisfied with the work and we expected to speak to their service manager the next morning at the appointed time. After waiting 45 minutes after the scheduled arrival time, I called and spoke to the office. The lady I spoke to told me that she had no scheduled appointment for us. There was no record at all. I said did you know that this was through Angie's List? She said no, she didn't. I said we would have to write a review and it would not be favorable. She said we did not need to do that. I said yes, ma'am it is only fair that we do. I bid her a good day and that was the end of the conversation with the company. We then contacted Angie's List and requested our refund.

Response from A+ Insulation
This started off as as basic estimate for a customer who purchased our angies list deal of 200 sq ft of R19 for $85.00. The coupon clearly states we will install R-19 blown insulation on the flat attic floor covering 200 sq ft for the $85.00. This customer did not want that, they wanted us to install 2 inches over their almost 1000 sq ft attic. There is a huge cost difference in this scope of work. Keith (our estimator) tenativly put them on the schedule pending a conversation with me (Mike O'Hara, President) to see if there was anything we could do for them. I made three phone calls and sent two emails before the scheduled install to explain why we could not blow the 1000 sq ft attic for $85.00. Of the three phone calls I left two messages asking them to call me back so we could discuss the install prior to the install date. After not recieving a call or email from the customer I made the decision to take them off of the schedule until we hear back from them. Around 9am on the original install date we recieved a very vulgar phone call asking why we were not there. We explained that we tried to contact them to discuss this, they admitted to recieved our messages but did not contact us to discuss the issue. When we run these deals, they are an incredible bennefit to the customer and we try to make them as black and white as possible. Customer service has always been our number one priority, and it upsets me that this situation ended up like this. I feel we did everything we could on our end to communicate with the customer and prevent this situation from happening. I have also contacted angies list asking that the customer be fully refunded for their deal they purchased. We do great business, stand behind our work, and put customers first, this has and always will be the way we opperate. Mike O'Hara

A+ Insulation was very responsive and professional. The gentleman who came out and did the energy audit was punctual, amicable, and knowledgeable. Overall I was pleased with the audit and the recommendations, as well as the explanation for the applicable recommended services. I would not use this company in the future for major insulation overhauls simply because they were among the most expensive of those I had do estimates. However, for a great audit as well as perhaps for smaller jobs, such as insulating around light fixture/fan holes in the attic, I would certianly use this company. I recommend anyone thinking of revamping his/her home insulation call A+ Insulation and compare the quotes from A+ Insulation to any other company you may be considering.
Description of Work: A+ Insulation did an energy audit; the company identified areas of greatest energy loss due to lack of, or poor, insulation and recommended services to remedy the areas of greatest concern.

The installation crew showed up a little late but went right to work. They rushed through the job and were out in about three hours. When I checked the job after they left I found the insulation they had put on the back of two doors going into my attic was not cut properly and fell off when the doors were opened. They also had done a poor job of cleaning up. There was loose insulation on several areas of the attic floor and also on a number of storage boxes stored in the attic. I called the A+ office and they sent out Billy Jackson who is their Field Manager. He corrected all of the problems I had called about plus found a couple of other things the installation crew had overlooked. Billy was very helpful and as a result I was finally satisfied with the overall job. I don't think the job deserved a grade of A+ but I would give it a solid B.
Description of Work: Installed additional insulation in attic. Sealed can lignts, electrical and plumbing, etc. penetrations through attic floor. Replaced insulation on knee walls.
