Description of Work: The week of the move, I was contacted by the moving coordinator, and we made a few adjustments to the schedule that were mutually beneficial. The packers/loaders showed up when they said they would, and began work immediately. They said they would use a 26' truck, and it would be dedicated to my household goods, and that was the case. Now, this particular mover's biggest truck is 26', so if you have over 9500 lbs of goods, they are probably not a good fit. That 26' truck was packed to the brim, with not a square foot of unused space. Unloading went equally smooth, the movers asked where I wanted most pieces and that is where they went. They bubble wrapped the furniture on the packing, and unwrapped and reassembled it upon delivery. The only breakage I had was one floor standing lamp, and the issue was resolved on the spot by the driver giving me the cash value of the lamp. I am well pleased, and with the limitations previously noted on overall size of the move, I would certainly recommend them and use them again myself.

Guys were o.k. while they worked. However, they left boxes in the old house and did not even ask if I wanted them, and they rushed out at least 15 min. early. They didn't attach mirror to my dresser. Would not use them again. Poor experience

Response from Starving Artists Moving
After carefully quizzing our employees, we think there was a lack of communication between the client and her mother. The client was not ready to be moved when we arrived. She was still packing boxes. We moved what was ready to go and at the end of a long day (we don't know what 15 minutes' early departure means in the client's commentary), we even told the client to call us so that we could return to move the boxes she hadn't finished packing yet. We never received a call. Obviously, the client did not think our employees were that incompetent because she asked one of them if he could return to do handyman work around her house. Normally, if a client isn't ready (agreed to pack his/her own boxes, but did not finish the task), there is a financial penalty. We did not assess this charge to this client and think we were more than fair, considering the circumstances with which we were faced.

Starving Artists called the day before to confirm the pick-up time and location. They were right on time on the day of the move and performed the job with professionalism, humor, and attention to detail. They finished the job in short order. The movers themselves were great. This company is far superior to other local in-town movers I have used.

First off, we were impressed that we got a truck and movers for an interstate move on the absolute busiest weekend of the year in a college town--July 31--on relatively short notice (about4-6 weeks beforehand). They were far cheaper than other estimates we got, and we were excited to have a company we thought we could trust. Plus, they could deliver overnight, rather than the 7-10 days other companies told us to expect while our stuff slowly made its way south. The three movers arrived promptly the day of the move, and loading went pretty well, though it took many more hours than the original estimate. This was partly our fault, since we wound up taking more stuff than we'd planned for in the estimate, plus I had done a lousy job of packing (I have what I call moving blindness--I think we're all done when there's still stuff unboxed all over the house). This led to there being too little room in the truck, so we did leave some things behind. Again, since the owner did a pretty thorough estimate, this was partly our fault, and that truck certainly was packed to the brim. The drivers were courteous and professional, especially considering it was insanely hot that day--about 110 as the actual temp, with high humidity. However, though two of the movers were scheduled to drive the truck down to Houston, apparently one of them bailed or was called away for some reason, leaving just one guy to drive the entire way down (13 hours), with one person arranged with a partner company down here in Houston to help unload. I imagine Starving Artists were short staffed due to the particular weekend it was, combined with the record heat. Whatever the case, there were only two guys to unload, starting at around 6 p.m. Aug. 1. Fortunately, my husband was able to help, but the second guy had to leave only a couple hours in, leaving just my husband and the one Starving Artists employee. They unloaded late into the night, till around 11:30 p.m., and the guy was really helpful, putting together bunk beds for our young children, who desperately needed to get to bed ASAP. Some of our stuff was far more scratched up than I expected, but I suppose that a very full truck contributed. The bigger problems were soon to come. A couple days later we ran our washing machine on the second floor of our house and soon noticed water dripping on the ceiling of the first floor. An appliance repairman determined that our washer's drain hose had been stuffed into our washer--which we didn't know about. We thought the hose had been lost in the chaos of loading the truck, since we looked for it in the tub of the washer (where it had been placed in previous moves) but didn't find it. Turns out it was stuffed deep inside the back of the washer, and the water not only was draining into the machine's electrical area, but the spinning of the washer drum had worn a hole in the hose, causing water to spray all over the innards of the washer. So we wound up with a $300 bill (and that's with a discount because the guy felt sorry for us, since it wasn't our fault), and water damage in our rental house that will take who knows how much out of our security deposit. We contacted Starving Artists and were told that the insurance company considered the washer drum a normal place to stash the hose, and I clarified that it wasn't in the drum but rather stuffed into the back of the machine, which wouldn't have been a problem had someone told us! So I got the "call us back tomorrow" (though honestly, shouldn't YOU be calling ME back, if I have a complaint?), so I left messages and never could get anyone to call me back after that. I gave up, knowing that their deductible was $250, so it wasn't worth $50 to try to prove it was their employees' fault. I was really disappointed because we have used Starving Artists at least twice in the past, and my husband's place of employment has also used them numerous times, with no problems and stellar service. We have recommended them to countless friends, so I hope this was just a fluke on a very busy, very hot weekend. I would still use them for in-town moves, but we got what we paid for on an interstate move.

I paid the deposit and signed the contract for the job to be done. The first day they showed up they told me they charged me 45 min of driving time, even though they are located down the street. The first day they worked 10 hrs. The next morning we started having issues and they held the truck hostage waiting for money for work that had not been completed. They came at 11:00 the next day. They only worked 7 hrs that day and again held the truck hostage. The third day me and the boss went round and round. He kept my truck hostage again until 1 o'clock. He actually had them pull over to the side of the road and wait until they got paid. I threatened to call the police, then he allowed his crew to start working again at one. I didn't know that I would have my things held hostage everyday until they got more money from me. I ended up having to go rent a Uhaul truck to finish the move. I had to pay Uhaul $600.00 after I returned the truck. This is money I should not have had to spend for this move. A few days after the last day I went to check my garage and found it was full of my tool and things. It took me 3 or 4 trips in a pick-up truck to get everything to my new home. If I had not of check I would have lost thousands of dollars in tools and personal items. Everything has been an argument and they wanted even more money in the end. I tipped the movers and the movers thought that the owner was treating me unfairly as well.

Response from Starving Artists Moving
When our moving crew arrived at her home, they discovered that she and the people inside had not finished packing, so, although this was not part of the contracted job, our employees had to begin packing while the client and the other people present sat around smoking. Very soon after their arrival, the crew called us to tell us that she had misrepresented the list of goods to be moved. It was much more extensive than what we had been given. She was told that the move would cost more and take a great deal more time because of her not being ready and not apprising us of the COMPLETE list of things to be moved. There were also issues with the house being very disorganized (client not ready) and dirty, conditions which are usually grounds for refusal to move a client. She became agitated and said she had to go ahead with the move because the landlord was insisting that she vacate the premises in a short amount of time; in fact, our crew told us it was a foreclosure situation. The crew told her that tile move would take longer, that we hadn't planned on this extensive amount of time for her move, and that we had other moves scheduled that day, so we'd have to extend her move into another day or more in order to complete it. Our usual policy on this length move, especially after this client expressed concern about not being able to afford tile move, is to collect payment at the end of each day, which she stalled about providing. When she did produce payment, her credit card was declined and we could only follow our policy of accepting cash or a money order at that point. After finally receiving payment, our crew proceeded with the move. The movers did not move the things in the garage because her (ex?) husband said the tools were his and he would get them later. The consensus of our crew was that this was a very emotionally exhausting move because of the confrontational attitude of the member. She, our crew reported, slandered the owners of the company by calling them names during the move. At one point, her (ex?) husband had to intervene in the situation, telling the crew that he was very sorry for the trying circumstances with his (ex?) wife. She was charged exactly the amount a three-day move of that duration costs, based on the prices initially quoted her for time used and the truck expenses. In addition, she even received a free night's storage when the move spilled over into the third day. The move was completed and she even tipped the movers. We all considered the move handled professionally in spite of the circumstances, so there was, and is, nothing to resolve as far as we are concerned, except for our perhaps addressing the slanderous name" calling in which she Indulged during the move. I have never been more pleased when dealing with a company. I spoke with one of the owners regarding the estimated cost of moving my things and she was very pleasant and understanding of my situation. They fit my move in on last-minute notice (my opinion since it was only one week away). Top notch service from company owner to men sent to do the work.
Description of Work: I had everything already boxed and ready to load into their truck. The two men loaded the truck, drove to my new place and then unloaded it all within just under three hours. It really helped that I had everything organized and that it was a small one-person move from a home to an apartment.

I made initial contact with Starving Artists Moving through a form on their website. The form was useful because it provided a framework to determine the parameters of our move: how many pieces of furniture and boxes, special items, the value of the items being moved, etc. I received a phone call within 24 hours from a woman who I believe was the owner. She explained the company's pricing model (hourly per mover + flat rate truck/fuel fee). We have a few items that needed special packaging and/or disassembly, which she said they would be able to accommodate. I put down a small deposit with my credit card and we scheduled a day and time. A few days before the move, we purchased some furniture. I called Starving Artists Moving to see if the movers could pick up the furniture from the warehouse during our move and was told this would not be a problem since we'd be billed hourly. On the morning of our move, movers S and P arrived promptly. We did a quick walk-through of the rooms, identified items requiring disassembly and/or special packaging, discussed scheduling of the furniture pick-ups, then S and P got started. I can't say enough about the level of quality, professionalism, and accommodation we received from both S and P. Our special items were handled with care in the old house and reassembled properly in the new house, and all items were undamaged and deposited in the correct location. Lead mover S was properly communicative when necessary over the course of our 6-hour day?asking me questions, answering any questions I had, making sure we were on time for the furniture pick-ups, etc. I never had a sense that our satisfaction was anything other than first and foremost in the minds of both S and P on the day of our move, and certainly I would not hesitate to recommend the services of Starving Artists Moving.
