The service person gave me an estimate. My warranty company would not approve the repair, so the repair was not completed. I was surprised to receive a bill for $65. I feel that was excessive-some service providers don't charge for Only an estimate.

"Hi Carol! It's always disappointing when a repair with a warranty company doesn't work out. Because I'm not signed up with your warranty company, you and I agreed you would present my bill to them and then be reimbursed. My trip charge to your area is $72, which I decreased to $65 to help out with your warranty company declining the repair. Some companies can give free estimates when they are dealing in projects that cost thousands of dollars. In appliance repair, our average ticket size just does not support the practice of free estimates. A trip and diagnosis fee is what we charge in this trade to determine the cause of the failure and come up with a plan. I appreciated how quickly you paid your invoice! Thank you!"

"Hi James! I'm sorry you didn't feel $228 was a good value for getting your dryer repaired. I have to disagree, of course -- not only did I save you the cost of a new dryer, but also the time and hassle of finding a dryer whose stacking kit is compatible with your washer. My trip charge for your area is $72, which is around what most appliance repair firms charge in Kansas City. Some charge a little more, some a little less. Essentially the trip charge covers the cost of doing business -- from advertising to continuing education to vehicle maintenance and all the other things it takes to get me into your driveway. I'm not interested in being the cheapest guy around -- I know some of those guys and I really doubt they do things like carry $2 million of liability insurance to protect their customers. That trip charge lets me do business the right way, so I can keep making a living and my customers can keep getting quality work. Thanks for your comments!"

He is not just a parts changer. He tested various systems until he determined what was wrong. We needed the water system on our 4 year old fridge repaired. He told us it wasn't worth replacing the part and was able to bypass filter so it would work. We have a water softener so it was not a problem. We also had him check our 10 year old freezer which has a door alarm going off. Its a wiring problem. He is trying to find parts to fix it.
