The job was fine. The guy who came out to give me the estimate was honest and upfront about what he was going to do. They did what they said they were going to do.
Description of Work: I am using Earlybyrd Construction to replace my upper deck. They did part of the job and then I had to take a break financially. They are finishing in a couple of weeks.

The original estimate came in at approximately $3500, including the removal of the old deck, cost of all materials which we did not already have and labor to complete the construction of the new deck. We already had 5 cedar posts and the composite deck material including all the composite trimming for edging along the house, so the material cost would have excluded these items. We were also under the impression that the remainder deck (railing, etc., minus the framework) was to be made of cedar, which we asked for and it would be constructed in such a way to guarantee the strength and durability necessary for the increased size. We went with them, not because of the price of whether it was the lowest bid, but because they sounded like they were really knowledgeable in the construction of decks and knew what they were doing. My husband completely removed the old deck himself between the time of getting the estimate and the date of actual service. When Early Byrd Construction showed up, they said they would make it up to us and credit us for the labor calculated in the original estimate since the old deck was removed. When the materials arrived, which we had already paid for, we were quite surprised that it was pressure treated pine instead of the cedar we had asked for. I gave the company the benefit of doubt though and reasoned that this shipment must be for the framework only and the cedar would show up later only to find out that the entire deck, minus our original materials was built of pine! When we tried to catch them make changes or corrections along the way, they blew us off and told us and quot;it will be just fineand quot;. We were told that the job would take 4 to 5 days to complete. The work crew, however, did not show up before noon on any of the days, took a lunch break about an hour after they showed up and left around 5 pm each day. They ended up taking 2 weeks. Towards the middle of the second week, they began cutting corners and attempted to leave without completing the railing on the stairway. We insisted that they build a complete rail for the stairs to match the railing on the deck. One of the posts is barely on the pier, the posts for the railing along the stairway is not lined up to match each side, the house siding was cut off to allow the attachment of the larger deck, but not replaced, the siding trim that was originally installed against the siding and the deck was cut off approximately 1 foot from the patio door on each side and left with jagged edges instead of replaced or finished neatly, the composite trim that we had for the deck to install along the house was never used. Instead of crediting us for the original removal of the old deck, they charged us extra for having to stay and build the stair railing. They also only used 3 of the 5 posts for the length of the deck, across the 18 foot span. As a result, only 1 month later, the deck is now sagging terribly between the posts, causing the rails, deck, rafters, etc. to also sag and twist. I would not recommend them to anyone and would never use them again!
Description of Work: Built a replacement deck which included a total rebuild, enlarging the new deck from our old deck size of 10x10 to a 12x18 deck.

Jim proposed a solution to build cement posts below ground, cutting off rotten section and remounting good wood to the cement posts. He met me at our house at my convenience and gave us a fixed cost estimate. Work was performed on time, for original estimate and very professionally done including cleanup. Jim was always available to provide a status of the work or to answer questions. Care was taken for our existing landscaping and garden plants around and under the deck. Jim wanted about half the total cost up front for supplies. He provided detailed receipts for all materials at the end of the job. I would definitely use this company (for any type of construction/carpentry work) again.
Description of Work: Deck posts were rotten below ground. Work required bracing deck, digging below ground around 10 6x6 posts, cutting out rotten wood, forming and building concrete platforms under each post, remounting posts. Jim also discovered that one corner of the deck had dropped several inches and when he remounted the posts, he raised the deck so it was level again. Jim also built a cement platform below our deck stairs raising the stairs posts above the ground so they would not rot in the dirt.

I contacted Jim from Earlybyrd Construction for an estimate on removing our small deck and replacing it with a larger one. Jim came out about 3 days after our initial phone conversation. He looked at the existing deck and listened to what we wanted in a new deck. Jim sent us an itemized estimate outlining all of the different types of wood and hardware needed along with the cost of each. He would also include the labor estimate on a separate line. He requested only the cost of the supplies up front. We received the estimate in the mail about a week later. The estimate was clear and included a start date for the project. Jim was able to start the project earlier than planned but contacted us before beginning the project to ensure the new start date would work. Jim was originally going to try to use the existing frame, but that was not possible. After discussing the situation with us we agreed to start with a whole new frame and new footings for the deck even though that would slightly increase the cost of the materials. Jim and Paul were able to complete the project in about 6 days. Their craftsmanship was excellent as was their professionalism. We are thrilled with the quality of the work Jim and Paul did.
Description of Work: Replaced a 12'x12' deck with a 12'x30' deck approximately 1 1/2' off the ground.

Jimmy gave us a great estimate on all the work he did, and kept us informed on every step they took. When he rebuilt the porch, he discovered that the gutters were bad, but informed us immediately so we could make a decision. This was the only reason the final cost was a little higher. The work was delivered as promised, and the results were fantastic.
Description of Work: Rebuilt our front porch, installed a wood ceiling in our family room, and installed crown molding.
