Cass was fun and easy to work with and very helpful with the design. He worked with me to make sure I made the best choices within my budget. We couldn't be happier with our 3 very high off the ground decks. They look gorgeous!
We had 3 other companies make a bid before we decided to go with All Weather Decks. We looked at a deck they were building in the neighborhood and our neighbors highly recommended them.
Cass was able to get started on the work earlier than anticipated. He came out a 2nd time to re-measure and make sure that everything was good on the initial estimate. There was a difference discovered which raised the price by about $700, which we were okay with. Laborers were prompt, removed the existing chain link with ease (we later discovered that they simply cut off the posts, and not even at ground level) and prepped for the installation of the new privacy fence.
The fence install the following day was smooth until they reached the gate. There was a small tree in the way that wasn't taken into account when initial measurements were done and the laborers weren't really sure how to get around it. Not really wanting the tree, I advised them that they could remove it, and also helped them do so.
Our neighbor to the west wanted the wood for an outdoor fireplace and I asked the laborers to toss the tree parts over his fence instead of putting them at the street. They left more than half of the tree sitting in the yard to our neighbor to the north instead, which he didn't take kindly to. We ended up having to cut up the rest of the tree ourselves and gave it our neighbor to the west.
The gate was installed poorly without proper framing and the fence pickets were not even connected to the cross members that were there. I contacted Cass who sent the guys out to repair it. They showed up at some point and connected those pickets to the cross members with no contact or notice that they had come and performed the work.
On 9/19/2013, a storm came through which ripped the gate apart to the point where we couldn't open or close it. The hinges were bent, cross members were broken and nails (that's right, not screws) were popping out. While the storm was continuing, I e-mailed Cass and asked him to have someone come and take a look at it so that we could get it repaired.
He responded on 9/22/2013 saying that he would have someone come by and take a look. On 9/27/2013, I e-mailed Cass to see if anyone had stopped by to at least gather some information. His response on 9/29/2013 was a mere two words: "Not yet". At no point did we expect them to do warranty work resulting from storm damage, mind you. I was, however, going to request a discount and have some additional work to really make the gate more solid.
Cass didn't respond again. On 10/3/2013, I was fed up and e-mailed him to let him know that his lack of response had prompted me to contact the contractor who did the work on our deck to come by and take a look because it didn't appear that he was interested in helping or making any additional money.
I have yet to receive any further correspondence, even an "I'm sorry", at this point. Unfortunately, the other contractor has been backed up and hasn't able to get out to fix our gate either. Since my last e-mail, pickets have begun to fall completely off the fence. My neighbor noticed and has re-installed several of them, since his house faces the fence and he can easily notice.
Shoddy worksmanship on the fencing. I can see that I will have year or two of constant maintenance until I am forced to have it completely rebuilt. They appear have a great reputation for decks, but fencing is definitely not their strong suit. Save your money and have a company better equipped to handled fencing build yours.
UPDATE:
I was able to communicate with Cass and we determined that a miscommunication led to part of my frustrations. I admitted my part in that and we moved forward. Cass came out and investigated the work and admitted that it could have been done better. He agreed to replace the gate at no charge. He explained that he would be out of town the following week and I was in no hurry, due to having it temporarily repaired previously.
His worker arrived bright and early the Monday after Cass's return to work. The decided not to replace the entire gate, but did a great job of re-using what was there and making it a lot better. Some of the cross-members were replaced while additional ones were added and it is now braced much better. They also replaced the latch with a deadbolt mechanism that allows for a lock to be used.
There was a piece of the fence that was missing, which I should have specified that I intended on having done originally. While his crew was here, I was able to get that 5 foot section of fence added so that my dog was unable to jump over a retaining wall that wasn't covered by the fencing. Cass only charged a low $100 fee to have that section added, which was quite reasonable.
All in all, we are happy with the fence now. We will continue to see how it endures the weather and update this review as appropriate.
Cass came to give us a quote ....we had viewed his awesome pictures on line of decks his company had done. As well he came with a binder of pictures we could look at....his pictures really had sold us ahead of his visit. Unbelievable the number and variety of decks he has done...all types large and small, high and low and patios as well...so impressive!!!!!! Cass's confidence and manner was so exemplary...no pressure at all. He answered all of our questions,,listened to what we were wanting and drew diagrams for us with measurements. He made suggestions as we went along. We had no qualms once so ever about how this project would progress and the finished product.
Cass was very very flexible on our starting date as we had an unexpected delay....no questions and was very accomodating.
His crew showed up each and every day as he said they would. They worked in 95 degree heat and worked so darn hard each day...every day all day long. I watched them each day and was totally amazed at how skilled they were...so darn skilled!!
The head gentleman...knew exactly what he was doing and guided the others incredibly well. In about 4 days our deck was completed and is so so awesome....beautiful and so well built. The stamped concrete....we decided twice to enlarge the size and Cass and his crew again were accommodating...it turned out way beyond our expectation....the fireplace...is the coolest ever...giving us more enjoyment than I imagined.
Along this process, Cass answered all our texts and emails (with our many questions..) with immediacy...very prompt and no question was treated as idiotic. This entire project was completey stressfree thanks to Cass and his incredible crew! We are so grateful.
I got three bids (all from Angie's List A-listers). I was impressed with each company. But Cass (All Weather Decks) stood out to me. He was very dialed into what we were wanting, seemed to really know his stuff, seemed to really care about the customer, and his price came in the lowest. So it seemed like a win-win situation. Turns out, it was.
The one thing that really stands out about this company is that Cass (the owner) really cares that things are done right, and on time. He gave me a start-date that was about three weeks out, not bad considering this was the "high season" for deck work. In truth I only half took him seriously, as we were having a ton of rain and I figured they'd be behind. I fully expected to see them much later. So you can imagine my surprise when the workmen showed ON THAT DAY to start. I was incredibly impressed by that.
Our property is not "typical" and required quite a bit of creating problem solving by the workmen. Alex amazed me. There was nothing he couldn't do or figure out. And he worked at the speed of light (slight exaggeration here, but you get the general idea). It was interesting and fun to see the work progress. This company ran like a well-oiled machine. The old decks were torn out first, then re-built. The old lumber was hauled away right away. No mess was left.
It was interesting to see the differences between our existing decks and the new ones going in. All Weather Decks uses screws rather than nails for the floor boards, which is a much better and longer lasting way to build a deck. We used to have to go around with a hammer and pound those old nails down as they popped up, over and over again. Screws will stay put. And they create a much stronger structure. So our new decks are an upgrade in quality from our old ones....not something that is said very often about new construction these days.
One of nicest things about All Weather Decks is that they do more than just decks. They pretty much do anything you may want or need in your outdoor space. We had a tricky area where our existing steel fence was to join the new deck. This required the addition of a fence panel which matches our existing one and a clever way to attach it to the new deck. It was so nice to not have to have a fence company come out and do that part of the job, especially because I was very unhappy with the original fence company that we used and I didn't want to have to deal with them again. Our new fence panel brought in from All Weather Decks matches almost exactly and attaches to the new deck in a most inventive way.
I decided to have a stone veneer added to a new cinder block wall that Alex built. The wait time was about two weeks (because I added this work on at the end of the deck work. Sure enough, there they were, right on schedule. And the stone veneer work is beautiful!
In a nutshell, I would recommend Cass and his amazing workmen to anyone. I was incredibly impressed with how this whole job went.
Cass contacted us promptly to book an appointment, arrived on time to perform the estimate, listened closely to our needs and budget restrictions and then offered sound ideas and excellent suggestions. He did not let the late spring snows deter him and stayed exactly on schedule with what was planned. He communicated with us throughout the whole process - from materials delivery and arrival confirmation to how things were going during and had excellent follow up after the job was done.
His crews were fast but extremely skilled and courteous as well. The tear out of the old deck went so fast and they did such a thorough job that we were amazed at their progress! The new deck went in and any issues or questions (which were minor) that we raised were swiftly addressed to our satisfaction. The job when smoothly and his suggestions when executed met and exceeded all our expectations. Cass and his crew really know what they are doing!! We got a beautiful new treated pine deck with powder coated aluminum ballusters and stylized posts and top rails with a small set of stairs - and a new block retaining area to address our sloping yard issues. The support structure is amazing and the work they did to return the area under the deck back to how it had been was executed perfectly and much to my satisfaction. This weekend we finally got a chance to sit out on it and enjoy a meal - our guests raved at how great it looked!!! It took me much longer to get this posted than I had hoped but I would like all to know, have no hesitation if considering All Weather Decks and Cass Brinkman for your work. He is a true professional!!! We are so glad to have had the opportunity to work with him - THANKS CASS & CREW!!!!!!
Cass is very soft-spoken and easy-going. He was delightful to work with--he answered all my questions and I had a lot of them! And he was very accommodating. He had to make some additional changes in order to implement our architectural design....we appreciate the extra effort it took because we got the deck we wanted and that matched our architectural drawings. The crew that worked on our deck was extremely hard-working and polite and also anxious to please. Several times they consulted with us about the implementation of certain features of the deck to make sure it was what we had envisioned.
We chose a cedar deck for 2 reasons: 1) we like the look and feel of real wood despite the fact that there will be maintenance costs going forward and 2) a cedar deck is still initially less expensive to build than a composite deck and considerably less expensive to build than a deck built out of an Azek-like material.
We are extremely pleased with our deck and would definitely hire Cass and All Weather Decks again for another project. It was built in November so we can?t wait to begin using our new deck as we get into the warmer weather.
I called two foundation companies from Angie's List to assess the situation. They both assured me that the foundation was stable and the interior cracks were only cosmetic at this point. They recommended replacement of the heavy concrete stoop/steps with lighter weight material (wood or composite) and lowering the height of the stone wall. These actions would relieve the pressure on the foundation. They gave me bids on tearing out the stoop/steps (one included lowering the rock wall), but neither company builds decks.
I decided to explore other options and requested bids from three deck companies on Angie's List. One did not show up. A second bid on tearing out and replacing the concrete stoop/steps, but could not do the work on the rock wall. The third, Cass Brinkman of All Weather decks, bid the entire project, at a price that was reasonable, and less than the total of spreading the project among two or three different companies. He took the time to show us a variety of deck materials, discussed several approaches to the project, and answered all of our questions. We contracted with him to (1) tear out the concrete stoop/steps and build a cedar deck and steps with cedar handrails, 4x4 cedar posts, and round black powder-coated aluminum spindles; (2) to lower the stone wall to a height of 2.5 ft, make repairs and tuck-point with new mortar where needed, and add a new 2'' concrete cap on top of the wall to prevent water seepage from rain and provide a seating area.
The work began on 1/8/2013 and was completed on 1/19/2013. The crew did an exceptional job, arriving on time and working diligently each day (weather permitting). They were very pleasant, taking time to explain what they were doing and why, and to be sure everything was progressing the way we wanted it to, and added some small extra touches. Tearing out the concrete stoop/landing/steps was arduous: the concrete was thicker than anticipated, But the men kept at it, with smiles on their faces, until completed. All the concrete and removed rock was hauled away, and upon completion of the project everything was cleaned up to our satisfaction.
We are pleased with the "new look" this project has given to the front of our home. We are confident that this will solve the settling problems experienced by the heavy weight of the previous concrete stoop/steps. Several of our neighbors have shared favorable comments with us. We highly recommend Cass Brinkman and All Weather Decks, and would not hesitate to contract with them again in the future
