After years of saving and research we decided to have our retirement home built as an Energy Star / Built-Green Colorado modular home from Wardcraft Homes of Fort Morgan, CO. In March of 2007 Wardcraft referred us to their authorized representative in Routt County, Distinguished Builders of Kremmling, CO. They promised us we could have a home set on our property by the fall of that year. We chose a modular home specifically because it was supposed to be "Faster, Cheaper & Better". Now, almost two years later, we can say that "Faster and Cheaper" is definitely a falsehood and we have serious doubts about the "Better" quality of the finished product. We already had a rough floor plan and a folder full of photos of other houses so we could show the Architect what design elements we wanted incorporated into ours. It took weeks and weeks just to get to our first meeting with their Architect, and weeks and weeks more to get the plans to a stage that we could submit to the factory. In the meantime, we were asked to choose many of the construction materials and colors from catalogs in Distinguished Builders' office. We could not choose the color of our next car from a catalog, nevermind a purchase as large and expensive as a new home. Wardcraft and D. Builders were absolutely no help. We had to contact the manufacturers directly to obtain lists of nearby homes built with their products so we could see them in a realistic setting. Time was slipping by and they told us our home would be ready by September, then it was November, then January 2008. Finally in the spring of 2008 they began building our "boxes" at the factory in Fort Morgan. At our first visit to the plant we discovered they had substituted cheap, no-oxygen-barrier Aquapex tubing for the pex-al-pex tubing that should have been installed in the Warmboard flooring. When we complained, they said it was all the same and they would not replace it until the heating contractor told them there would be no warranty on the boiler and heat exchangers if they didn't use pex-al-pex. Meanwhile, D. Builders is doing the site prep work on our property. We caught their employees using drugs and alcohol on the job and have the photos to prove it. We complained repeatedly, no response. When the boxes finally arrived, it was apparent that they had been so badly deformed during transit that the walls were cracked and the windows had their frames sprung and split. They told us it would be 4-6 weeks after the boxes were set that we would get our Certificate of Occupancy and be able to move in. The boxes were set the last week of May 2008 and we did not get the C.O. until the week before Christmas. And the house is seriously flawed and unfinished! Wardcraft says all the problems are the local contractor's fault and he says it is all Wardcraft's responsibility. We are caught in the middle and will have to sue to seek justice. Our dream home has become a nightmare. This is a scam. Stay away from these companies.
