Main issue was communication with John the supervisor/owner, who was not a good listener. He was not present during most of the construction of the deck. It seems he did not listen to what I wanted and the large deck ended up much higher than I preferred. My main concern was to make sure it was flush to the ground, so that my cats would not be able to crawl underneath. When I returned from work the day they built the frame, there were many gaps under the frame and on 2 sides a space of over 12 inches was open! When I mentioned that I needed this corrected, he complained that it would take more materials, but he would cover it (like this was my fault?). He also did not communicate with his 2 staff, who said as much. This was a step up deck off to one side of my cement patio. The second small deck off the patio was to be flush with the patio and extend out about 4 to 5 feet. It ended up about 1 + inches higher that the cement patio! I was told that there was cement underneath that prevented it from dropping any lower, but my investigation that evening showed that in all but one area there was at least 2 inches below the frame that could have been put down farther, but it would have required more labor to remove stone/cement blocking the small area (about 8 inches) on the left.. I had to suggest then that they at least bevel the top decking to make it look good and so I would not trip on it, replace a piece on the larger deck next to the door/patio that had a gap in it to make it look better, and provide a decent skirting for the entire project. This should be second nature to carpenters and not suggested by the customer. Workers were a bit unprofessional by taking off their shirts (it was hot.....), but their use of colorful language was a bit annoying. At one point they were arguing, swearing and shouting so loud that my neighbors commented about it later Not real professional. The deck looks just ok and is functional, but these are definitely not finish carpenters. The skirting was done with different sizes of boards and again, although functional, not a well finished skirting edge.
Description of Work: Built a small flat deck in back yard - about 17 X 17 with a small extension on side (about 5 X 8)
