They are professional on the phone, send out written materials as needed, arrive as scheduled, perform services as expected and try to be an convenient as possible for the customer needs. Very professional organization. One season I had to reschedule three times due to unexpected conflicts and they were very accommodating plus never demonstrated frustration with the need to make the changes.

O.B. scheduled a date and time to meet to with me to go over the plans to install an irrigation in our yard. He was very thorough on explaining the process of the install, the maintenance and warrantee of their installation. O.B. was fantastic to work with, he was always available by phone or email, if or when I had a question. The installation was a two day process. The two different groups that came out to do the installation were all great. A couple of key points that are worth mentioning are: 1. they dug deep lines, around a foot deep, to prevent freezing of the lines 2. they placed the boxes in areas that are not noticeable, such as the side of the yard and in one of the flower beds. I've seen other jobs, and the boxes are in the yard, which is what I did not want, and they accommodated my request. O.B. was also very precise in placing the heads of the spriklers, to ensure we have appropriate coverage on all parts of our yard. Finally, I was very impressed with the warrantee that the company offers, along with the service they provide for a couple years. The warrantee and service provide me with reassurance that the work they performed was done correct. The installation was late October, so we were not able to enjoy the benefits of the system throughout the year, but I'll definitely update the comments next year. Barthuly also followed up with a thank you note, making sure the process went smooth and as we expected. After spending the money and making the investment in an excellent irrigation system, it's nice to hear from the owner, who appreciates the business.

Bad experience resulting in a costly repair which I had no idea about until the system had to be started again this spring. Will never use again
Description of Work: Barthuly shut off my irrigation system for the winter last year. Now a year later my new irrigation company found that the system was not shut off poperly and water got into the pipes into the backflow and cracked one of the pipes. First, I have to say that I don't understand why this previous customer chose to reply to a "forum" to try and resolve this issue instead of simply calling us to help him out. This was a one time customer. We track every phone call that comes in and goes out of our phone system. Here are the facts. This customer called on November 7th, 2011 requesting a winterization. We scheduled the winterization two days later. This was an appointement and the customer WAS present when we performed the work. The system was comprised of six zones. Our technician, who has over twenty years of experience in this industry, winterized the system with compressed air. Our policy is to run through each zone two separate cycles in order to ensure water is out of the pipes. We have gps on all of our vehicles. That vehicle was at this location for 37 minutes which would be typical for that size of a system. I don't believe it is fair to assume the system was not winterized properly when our company was not able to assess the damage first hand. Further, it is not uncommon for their to be damage over the winter time while the sprinkler system remains idle. Sprinkler systems are luxury items that have expensive parts and the labor to replace parts is generally not cheap. I wish this customer would have extended the same courtesy to us that we would have been happy to extend to him had he given us a chance to look at the system this year. That was not the case.

We have had Barthuly service our sprinklers for the past 7 years. We usually have had good results. This year has been different. We received the schedule of the opening dates for each of the zip codes service by Barthuly. Since we do not have an access door, we have to schedule an appointment for the technician to come and test the sprinklers. The staff has always been friendly including this most recent visit. The technician arrived during the time window and turned on the system. After replacing one of the sprinkler heads, he gave me a copy of my back-flow results and was off. Directly from their service contract, it states that spring start-up includes, adjustment of sprinkler head. So imagine my surprise when we turn them on for the first time this weekend and the front sprinklers instead of watering my lawn, are spraying into the street, spraying the driveway and one is doing nothing but gushing like a geyser. It was the weekend, so I called the company and left a message asking to be contacted first thing in the morning. By 11am, I got tired of waiting and called again. I spoke to a very polite woman named Megan, who apologized that she had not gotten to call me back, I was on her to do list. Her first available appointment was over a week later. I work and can't take the day off to sit home and wait for phone calls or technicians to arrive. It will be almost 2 weeks until we could find a time for me to be home and for them to come. I think it is ridiculous that they do poor work and I have to be inconvenienced. I work in the service industry and I understand that sometimes things just aren't done right especially when in your in a hurry and over booked, but I never make MY ERROR inconvenience my customer further. We are expecting hot and very dry weather for the next week and I have a sprinkler system that I can not use. As a long time customer, they should do what is right and fix what should have been done in the first place. For now they get an F. They have failed to deliver on the basic level of the service they were contracted to do. In the mean time, I am looking to find another service. It will depend on how they respond and fix this situation if they get a regrade and our business for next year. Update: The owner called the next day and a member of the team stopped by to assess the issue. I was not present but my husband said the gentleman asked many questions and after looking at the system was able to quickly correct the issue. I appreciate the quick response and the respect they showed in correcting the issue.

They did a really good job in installing it and then in the spring and fall. They have done a very good job, so we paid. We had to call them. They scheduled their spring and fall work. The startup went fine and the service rep set the irrigation timer as well. The backflow valve was at least 24 yrs. old, so I wasn't surprised that replacement was needed. The price was fair and did not take long to get it done. The rep demonstrated and explained the valve test procedure which indicated it's failure, prior to replacing. He contacted the office to verify pricing and as to whether he should collect a check, but they said they would bill me for the part. The rep suggested another possible service, that is, moving irrigation heads, but he did not make this a hard sell. I passed on this, but may consider early next year. I was pleased at that they were able to arrive within the week following my call. There were two services I used last year, one of which I decided never to use again, the second was sufficient and I planned to use this year, but they wouldn't return any messages--they were available only by pager. Overall, this business seemed pretty decent.
Description of Work: Payment was for start-up and winterization services (to be scheduled later). The service rep (Billiy) found the backflow valve to be faulty and leaking and required replacement, as it was running into fresh water supply.

. We are the fourth owners of this house since 1993 and they are the ones who put in the irrigation system and so we have just stayed with them. They are very punctual. Whenever we have any problem with the sprinklers and we just call them they usually come out the same day or the next day. They come do the start ups, the mid checks and then they minimize it. If there is break or replacement of the sprinkler heads or in the pipe they give us a certain % off like a 10% off.

Excellent. I have been using them for over 7 years now. They shutdown the system in the fall and start it up in the spring (as well as doing backflow testing). They have always been very responsive and have done an excellent job of keeping me apprised of problems (or potential problems). This spring, two of the seven valves in our 17 year old sprinkler system failed, so I had them replace all seven valves. I also chose to replace the control unit at this time, Russell (the tech who diagnosed the problem and did the valve replacement and controller install) did a great job. He kept me fully informed as to my options, costs, etc. He did an excellent job, is is one of the reasons I will remain a loyal customer.

I used Barthuly for a customer who was having a problem with the cycling of his irrigation system. My client installed this system on his own 11 years ago and is fairly handy at solving his own problems. He called to see if I could help and I thought it would be important to bring an expert to help solve this problem. The lady I spoke to at Barthuly was very helpful and scheduled an appointment for us on the day we needed them. I ended my conversation with the understanding that Barthuly would call me when their technician had left their office to go to the jobsite. They never did. I ended up calling around 9 a.m. asking if they were on their way and the same woman I made the appointment with said they were already there. I was on another jobsite and had to hurry to keep them from waiting. I arrived and Travis was very nice and seemed eager to do the job. We immediately went downstairs to the control module and Travis tested the equipment. He couldn't find anything wrong so we went outside to the valve manifold and had my client run through the three cycles. The second one wouldn't cycle on and the third had pressure issues. Travis, again, got out his test equipment, testing the solenoids, and according to him, couldn't determine any problems. I brought a solenoid, just in case we needed one. Travis decided to change the number two solenoid and still nothing. He then went to his truck and got a commercial rated solenoid and put that on the third valve. That shut the entire system down to where nothing was working. I was concerned this might have damaged the system. At this point, it became obvious that I or my client could have done this kind of trial and error to fix my client's irrigation system. There was no expertise involved in trying to solve this problem and I became disappointed in the way the appointment was going. After two hours, Travis left and I was still left with a system that didn't work. I determined on my own that the third solenoid was not testing at the same level as the new solenoid so I decided to replace the third solenoid. This did the trick. This took me about an hour. The system worked perfectly after that. Unfortunately, Barthuly was no help. Needless to say, when I received their bill for over $200, I was disappointed and angry. I made the mistake of not calling to inform them of my dissatisfaction and why I wasn't paying the bill. This was my fault. Finally, a few weeks ago, I got a call from Larry Barthuly. The conversation started out polite and I apologized for how long it had taken me to communicate. I began to inform Larry of my experience and why I wasn't going to pay the bill. Immediately, Larry insinuated I was lying and that if I didn't pay, he was going to lien my client's house. Not once did Larry listen or offer any consideration to what I was saying. He didn't even care what had happened but indirectly agreed that if what I was saying was true, he could understand why I wouldn't pay the bill. "How do you expect us to know that, if you don't tell us", he said. I agreed and Larry continued arguing that he had GPS evidence his technician was there, which I never said he wasn't. Finally, after confronting him on the fact that he had not once apologized or seemed concerned about the performance of his company, he hung up on me. Very unprofessional. I understand Larry's frustration in the timing of my communication with his company but I will not pay a company for something they didn't do. Showing up is not enough. I received a letter last week, reviewing our conversation and Larry is still threatening to lien my client's house if I don't pay him. Thankfully, lien laws prohibit any filings after sixty days from the last day the work was completed. Very unprofessional.

To ensure our company provides quality customer service, we routinely record all phone conversations. We do so for quality assurance and training purposes. This helps us provide the quality our customers expect. After reading the comments from the Member, I listened to each of the conversations (4 in total) that he had w/ our company. On August 30th, the Member called and told us his customer had a sprinkler system that was not operating properly and that he had a part that he felt would make it operational. He wanted us to install the part he was providing. He was told explicitly that we do not carry that brand of product on our trucks. He was told that if we could install the part he was providing, he would be charged a trip charge only. He was told if the part he was providing did not work, he would be charged time and material for us to make the repair. He said he agreed with that. Our technician's notes indicate he used the part provided by the Member. Nobody, including the Member, ever indicated the work we did was faulty. Our technician would not walk away from an unfinished job and not discuss that with his manager so the situation could be resolved. We invoiced for the work we did, as agreed to by the Member in his first conversation with our office staff. One month after the initial completion date, we had not received payment so we sent a second invoice. Two months after the completion date, we still had not received payment so we sent a third invoice. Three months after the completion date, we still had not received payment so we sent a fourth invoice. January 11th, 4 1/2 months after completing the work, I called the Member. He stated he had received our invoices but needed to talk with me about the work we did. He immediately stated he was not going to pay us anything because we had not done the work correctly. I asked who he spoke with about this issue and he said he had not spoken to anyone from our company. If I get a bill I don't believe I owe, I immediately call the company who sent me the bill so we can figure out why I got it. It certainly is not ethical to wait 4 1/2 months to dispute a bill that cannot be properly addressed or investigated. It is the middle of winter and the Member's customer's sprinkler system is closed for the season. For these reasons we cannot properly investigate the Member's claim. I was upset with the Member due to his blatant attempt to relinquish his responsibility to pay his bill and due to his non-existent attempts to contact us to discuss his concerns. In an attempt to encourage the Member to pay his bill, I did tell him we would have no choice but to lien his customer's property. I had no intentions of ever filing a lien, but was merely trying to convey the message, from one business owner to another, that he needed to pay for what he asked us to do. We have since written this off as Bad Debt

It went well. We received several bids and this one was the most impressive (although not the cheapest). Ken worked with us on the details and even suggested we use the pond as a water source. It is more eco-friendly, although there will likely be more maintenance because of the silt in the pond. They finished the job in a few days time and worked closely with my husband, the perfectionist engineer. They also spoke with our neighbor to ensure placement of several of the sprinkler heads to make sure we were not encroaching on their yard. Our lawn has never been greener!

Our system was installed by Barthuly about two years ago. Since then, we have had problems with sprayers not shutting off during a cycle. We were told that this is not uncommon and that if we were worried about it happening while we were gone on vacation, we should shut the system off. The reason we got the system in the first place was to make sure our lawn and gardens didn't dry out while we were gone. The most recent service call for the same problem was (according to the service man) that some of the plastic 'flash' from the spray nozzle had broken off and lodged in the valve so it wouldn't shut off. Each time we have been charged $79 for a service call to correct problems which should have been corrected when the system was installed. We were disappointed with our experience with a company which had such a high rating on Angie's List. We have now changed to another company.

As is sometimes the case, unfortunately, the owners of the company were not made aware of the problems this customer was having with their system until after we recieved a letter and this subsequent negative report. The day we recieved the news of this customers' dissatisfaction, we reached out to him via letter as well as sending them a check for $122,00. The letter stated how sorry we were that his concerns were overlooked on our end and that we would try and make sure not to let that happen to other customers in the future. The check was a refund of the money he had sent to us that we felt should not have been invoiced. In response to our letter, this customer wroter back in gratitude for our attentiveness to his issue even though it was after the fact. The last line of his letter reads "....so thank you once again for bolstering our confidence in that resource (Angies List), as well as responding personally to our concerns...) We don't get it right ALL of the time, but we will always do our best to make sure a problem has been taken care of quickly and without incident.

Good experience from start to finish. This was a major job that involved almost 6 days of labor.
Description of Work: Barthuly designed and installed a complete lawn irrigation system. It included approximately 24 zones. They were very helpful in the design of the system and listened to our requirements. We were having other work (driveway redo and expansion) done during the same period. They split their schedule to accommodate our needs. After the drive was finished they promptly returned and completed their work. Crew was through, professional and helpful. I would use them again if the need arose. I have a maintenance contract wiith them because they earned it the hard way.

This year they did not reply to my request and just did not show up. I was never notified that they would not complete the service that they have done over the past years. What Barthuly neglects from their report is that my system was installed as a self-starting stopping system and they new this. Consequently, I did not need their start-up service but needed the back-flow test and various adjustments, etc. They did not allow me to pay as you go as they suggest. They just dropped me from their schedule.In any case, I have found that Walker Irrigation does not have these limitations but has good quality and price.

It is unfortunate that we have had to change some of our accounting practices as they relate to accounts recievable. In years past, we would perform services on our customer's properties and then bill them for the work in expectations to be paid within 30 days. We decided (and were advised) to change this business practice once we were forced to write off tens of thousands of dollars (around 80K) in 2009 due to customers who requested services and then did not pay for them once they were completed. This customer is correct in one respect but very much mistaken in the other. We do send out contracts to all of our customers and offer incentives (discounts) if they pay for the annual services in advance. If they choose to "pay as you go" we will have our technicians collect while on site or we will obtain payment over the phone prior to coming onto their property. What this customer did not elaborate on is we must have the water turned on to the sprinkler system in order for us to test the backflow device. Considering he asked us NOT to turn on his system this year, it is fair to assume that he would be taking care of that part of the maintenance himself. All we required is that he call us after he had turned on the water. After checking with everyone in or office to see if this customer had called, we discovered that in fact he had not. We have a very sophisticated phone system that tracks and records all incoming and outgoing phone calls. We have no record of this customer calling us to inquire where we were with our schedule or to let us know that he had already turned the water on and we were OK to perform the backflow device test. As is always the case there are two sides to every story. Regretably, it appears there will be no resolve with this particular customer. However, we will continue to move forward with the hope that we all can communicate better in the future.
