It started all right until one of the workmen began to say inappropriate and unprofessional things about the house and the work. When I learned that the worker was on work-release, I nearly had a heart attack. I confronted the contractor with this and the contractor came over, picked up his saw-horses and tools still charging on back porch, as well as the small air conditioner, and left, leaving the back porch incomplete and wide open. "I'm not finishin' the job," he said, "Get someone else." The downstairs electrical panel door is off and leaning against wall; circuit breakers are exposed with wires and alligator clips running to and fro. I am a single female who lost her mother 4 months ago, and the back porch update was something we had wanted. I feel that the structural and electrical integrity of the home and the security of the premises have been compromised.
Description of Work: I paid the contractor $2000 in fall of 2007 to flood-proof basement. The contractor installed a sump pump and a created a channel around the perimeter of the basement. The basement flooded twice after that, but since the sump pump worked, at least, I accepted that the basement is probably not flood-proof. Then, I paid the contractor $5500 in April 08 (half up-front) for an $11,000 job, to enclose back porch and also do work in kitchen: install new sink and fixtures, garbage disposal and dishwasher. Finally, three months later, the contractor started on the work (the men he hired started to work). They tore down existing porch structures and put up new structures including windows with screens and hung doors (there was no door jamb on south side door, and large gaps at the bottom of both doors). The contractor then stormed off the job when I found out about and complained of his use of prison labor. The drywall is not finished. Wires are hanging out of the walls inside and out. Electrical outlets are not finished. The porch light does not work (the switch is hanging out of the wall). The upstairs window was replaced because the roof was higher than the window, and in removing the old window, the structural integrity of the wall may have been compromised. There is a large hole in the dry wall on the south side of the porch exposing the porch to the elements (the hole in the drywall was to contain a small A/C); stacks of metal, heaps of cast-off materials, garbage left behind by workers, and a huge box of refuse as well as boards and beams in the back yard that need to be hauled off. The job is completely unfinished.
