They were one of 3 contractors we had in to give us a quote and time line for the work to be done. I & M Heating had the best quote and they met the time line we needed. We will gladly hire them again.

I & M charged $592 for a hot water heater part Aug 20 on a house I purchased Sept 4. By Sept 11 the hot water heater was not working. The previous owner had given me the receipt for the work (personally, I would not have paid that for a part and bought a new hw heater that had a warranty). I called and the man who answered proceeded to tell me he had been doing this for 35 years (what, taking people's hard earned money for shoddy work?). The man was rude and nasty. I called someone else, who was able to come out right away and the water heater was shot (I could tell this by the terrible noise it was making and my 30 years of home remodeling experience). He never should have advised a fix the first time, but he was probably planning on doubling his money. Do not use this company!

Response from I & M Heating Cooling and Appliance
When a customer calls in on the phone and ask for a solution to their problem I usually go by what they say on the phone although I'm not been there. This customer ordered the part to be replaced without me being there first. I cannot tell the phone that the water heater shot until I get there. It was his choice not mine to repair it.

First, we called this company because it was on a sticker on our water heater, which was malfunctioning. It was still under warranty. The repairman (presumably the owner) came, did not mention it wouldn’t be under warranty and that he hadn’t been the person who had previously fixed it until he presented is with a $200 initial bill JUST for labor and “overtime. He then proceeded to nickel and dime us for “driving to get the part”, reinstallation, and more “overtime”. The total bill for what ended up being no more than 1.5 hours of time was a whopping $600. All this and our water heater still isn’t up to par AND smells of gas. We called him about this and he “neglected” to get back to us until it was outside of the warranty time so we would be charged for any parts and labor. The second time we had to deal with him through a home warranty company because he was the only contractor who could do the work immediately on our broken fridge. Spoiler alert: he never fixed it, The fridge had the same problem a mere 2 months later and the home warranty ordered him to go back and fix it again, but he has yet to contact us again, despite the warranty company ordering him to do so. This company is a scam and a nightmare.
Description of Work: We had both our water heater and fridge/freezer unsuccessfully repaired by him/this company.

They were awesome. They had to replace a very expensive part and that part happened to still be under warranty - it had a twenty year warranty on it. I put that unit in 18years ago and it was still under warranty. So I didn't have to pay for the spare part which was huge- because most of the time when that part goes out, you might as well just get a new furnace. They were able to get a new part for me and put it in. What I paid for was their labor and the trip charge. It was actually the owner that came out.

We went through our home warranty on service for our dishwasher and were referred. The technician, the same as mentioned in a previous review, came the first time and seemed that everything was fine and had to order some parts. So we waited 4 days and he came back. The receptionist/office manager never confirmed the time, i had to call them to find out. he installed the parts only to discover another problem. He came about 4 times, 2 weeks passed while some parts were ordered and I had to constantly call to follow up. He left a mess each time, letting water leak all over the floor with my own wet towels in a heap on the floor as he did not plug something when turning the dishwasher upside down. He also left greasy parts in my sink, poured stagnant water from the bottom of the dishwasher onto my dishes in the sink and left parts (screws and a part for a washing machine) on the floor- I have a 2 year old with me! In the end after 4 visits and about 6 weeks chasing, he gave up and just stormed out. Sears was referred next and was able to fix it with no problem, this guy had absolutely no idea what he was doing and the company was very unprofessional, I would not use them again!

The bill was $301, which seemed quite high to me. Whoever the lady is on the phone is also quite rude. I had to call a couple of times, and not once was she pleasant to talk to. Now, it is less than a year later and the exact same thing is happening again. I & M does not stand by their work, informing me that it would be the full price all over again, even if it is the exact same leak from the last visit that they hadn't fixed properly. The lady was even more rude this time! I told her no thanks this time around, I'll call a better heating and cooling company. Update: When the new company went to my house, they said that there were no caps on the service valves, and the unit was completely out of freon. Our yard is surrounded by a 6 foot privacy fence, so it's unlikely that anyone removed the caps, I & M probably never put them back!
Description of Work: Air conditioner was running, but not getting cold. I & M came out and found a leak at the suction valve, supposedly repaired it, and refilled with Freon.

I took the afternoon off of work for them to come look at my washing machine. The technician finally called around 3:15 to say he would be there within one hour. I finally called him back at 4:45 and he said he got stuck at the other job and was very rude on the phone about the situation. I will definitely not be using this company.

It took a bit of calls "back and forth" to set an appointment. They must have been busy, as we had to reschedule a couple times. Once we finally found a date and time that worked for everyone, they came out and quickly diagnosed the issue.

A double homicide happened 300 feet away and killer walked through our lot. Next morning our furnace boiler failed and ruined our lving room, dining room hardwood floors, the basement ceiling and floors. I tried to find someone who would work on the boiler on a Saturday. The owner of I & M gave an estimate and reassured me he'd have it fixed on Monday/Tuesday in less than 4 hours (part needed to come in from Michigan City). The repair person, Larry, from I & M , arrived at 11:10 AM. WEDNESDAY He put the new water main turn off in the wrong place so AND left solder, parts all over my laundry room floor . At 1:30 P I went down to the boiler in the basement because I could hear his yelling and swearing upstairs! He was sitting on the floor, water tracked on the floor, READING the instruction manual for the install. He had installed it, but it didn't work. He said he had checked electrical, etc. He loudly yelled "This should be logical. It should work. It's going to be done". At 2:30 I went down again, he was still swearing, muttering, etc. on phone. I suggested we just put the old assembly back on, since it did work but needed to be watched. (as it turns out, that would have been the right thing to do since he would have found that the furnace didn't work with the old assembly and the problem wasNOT with the part) I offered to call the manufacturer from my phone; he angrily said " IT WILL WORK IT WILL WORK I'M GOING TO MAKE IT WORK" AT 3:30, I heard his cell ring. I heard him yell one of his words was "S***". (I'm assuming it was his workplace since he had been on the phone fairly continuously during these hours.) I went down and said what alternative/option was available since I could not be without heat and also pipes would freeze. He really angrily began to yell again about the popout valves, etc,. When I made him re-focus on option he yelled " " IT WILL WORK IT WILL WORK I'M GOING TO MAKE IT WORK THE PIPES WON'T FREEZE THIS HOUSE WON'T COOL DOWN IN THAT TIME TO HAVE THE PIPES FREEZE'. I withdrew upstairs, as I do know escalation signs. At 3:51 Julia from the insurance company called and I told her of the presenting situation. She told me how to protect the pipes and also asked to talk to the furnace repair man. He again was still on the phone, so I spoke with her answering her questions about damage. I then went downstairs again to have him talk to her... he was draining down the furn ace... I reallize he was busy but said the insurance person wanted to speak to him. He loudly yelled "why" .. I stated because she needs to ascertain the situation. He very angrily yelled again (perseveration) IT WILL WORK IT WILL WORK I'M GOING TO MAKE IT WORK. At that the insurance person backed off, she just over the phone could recognize this was an volatile person and I went back upstairs. He came up at about 4:20 and said it now worked. He said that the instructions didn't say you had to have a clear blow out line for it to function; that it would automatically turn off; that his colleagues/coworkers had called the manufacturer and it wasn't until he himself spoke with the manufacturer tech that he learned that he needed to once again "blow out the lines", i.e. drain them out. On the furnace bill, he stated he arrived at 10A. I queried the time, he said "that's the time I spent getting the valve assembly"... HUH? Since when? Onn Saturday, I was told it would be SENT to them from Michigan city...as had the secretary on Monday. He also tacked on 4 extra hours over the estimate. So, essentially paid for 3 1/2 hours "work" for him to LEARN how to deal with a boiler. AND at least some $ could have been saved if he would have talked directly to the manufacturer's technician. I realize he was frustrated and angry. But that is not helpful in installing a furnace. I wrote a check just to get rid of him. He knew the homicide situatiion, he jacked the price up, he was unstable and volatile . I didn't feel it was appropriate to call the police because of his POTENTIAL for violence, although in retrospect I wish I would have. I will never contact that company again. I don't want to ever deal with this company and have posted a "do not call" on my boiler!

I called for quotes on service call and hourly rates as my furnace was making noise yet still working. They quoted a lower service call on the phone than what they priced the bill. They charged me an hourly rate to go pick up the repair part from a separate furnace company; it took an additional hour! They said they would include the service call rate into the cost. I thought it would be deducted; they said I could pay it all at one time. Oh boy! The entire experience was the worst I have ever been a part of with vendors. I wouldn't ever use them again.

They installed it on 6/10/2009 and we had nothing but trouble since. We had him come back out to work on it and he submitted a $2224 bill for the extra work he was doing to fix the job, even though we have a 5 years parts and 10 years labor warranty. He says this work and parts are not covered in the warranty. We went to Florida and came back to very high electric bills. Our electric bill was $551.65 in December and $446 in January even though the heat was set to 62 degrees. This was all due to the system not working correctly. Summer came and the AC was not working correctly. We had him come look at it again he billed us 450.00 for a part that was again not included in the warranty. This fix did not work and he had to come out again. He billed us $180 for service again. This whole time we were suffering through the heat. He came out at least 15 times and none of his fixes lasted more than a few days. I finally had someone else come out and they did a diagnoses for a $1100 charge. He said it was a complete mess and will take $5875 to fix what I & M had messed up. We have requested that he pay for the $5875 and the $1100 analysis. He has ignored all of these requests.

This was the absolute worst experience I have ever had with any type of service in my life. After installing my thermostat I swore I smelled natural gas and said something while both Jeff and his brother were here. I got no response. When Jeff was finished and leaving I mentioned again that I smelled natural gas. His response was let's go take a look. So we went back downstairs and after borrowing my lighter and windex to check for a leak we found the gas line into the thermostat was NOT tightened properly and was leaking natural gas. His response was that I had a better nose than him. This was unacceptable to me considering he was going to leave the job with a gas leak. After complaining about this his answer was "well you told me and I fixed it right there on the spot" He called his brother to come out to help because he did NOT have the proper socket to remove the anode rod. After his brother arrived and brought the proper tools they were unable to replace the anode rod. I complained about this and his response was he did not charge me for the extra guy to come out. This is also unacceptable considering the only reason he was called is becuase Jeff did not have the proper tools. My wife was very upset after calling Jeff to see what time he would be coming out to repair the water heater and was told 45 minutes. She simply called because we had a sick pet at the vet and she wanted to go see our pet before the vet closed for the evening. She waited and waited and after TWO and a HALF HOURS he finally showed up. He never called to say he was running behind or going to be late. My wife was obviously very upset and was unable to go see our pet since he didn't bother to show up or let her know any different. His respone to this was "oh, I'm sorry". I think that may be the only time Jeff was remotely courteous during this ordeal. I work in customer service and I know I would not have a job if I treated customers the way he does. i will never recommend his company to anyone and have contacted the BBB due to the terrible experience.
Description of Work: My water heater started pouring water out of the temperature pressure relief valve drain. Jeff Byer (the owner) came out on a Saturday to diagnose the problem. While he was here the water heater did not act up and Jeff apparently knew the cause of concern without verifying the concern. He called my warranty company since it is only 3 years old and after the conversation he had with them it was diagnosed as a thermostat. Part had to be ordered and the warranty company also wanted the anode rod replaced. We elected to overnight the part since cold showers are no fun.Jeff returned on Tuesday with thermostat and anode rod. The thermostat was replaced. Jeff called his brother to come out with the proper tool to remove the anode rod and even with a pry bar they were unable to remove the old anode rod. So I now have an $85 anode rod sitting in my basement collecting dust. While I was downstairs two days after the repar I swore I heard water pouring out again and low and behold my water heater was acting exactly the same. i called Jeff again and got an attitude from him and told me to call the warranty company again since he replaced what he was instructed to by the warranty company. Finally he decided to call after I gave him all the info from the water heater again. he called me back and gave me a few options of what might be causing the concern. I called the warranty company back and got a different story from two people. At this point I had no faith in Jeff's ability to fix my problem without spending hundreds of dollars more. I requested that he either refund for my money for the repair that did NOT fix my problem or come back and look at it again at no charge to me. He instead made excuses and elected to do neither.

Response from I & M Heating Cooling and Appliance
The member called on a Saturday afternoon around 2 p.m. for repair to her water heater. I explained weekend overtime rates and she said she understood. She went on to say that my company had repaired her a/c in the past and that she was happy with our work and would like to have us repair her water heater. In discussing the problems with the member’s husband, I told him I would call the factory service number, which I did and the factory tech and I agreed it sounded like the thermostat and the anode rod needed to be replaced. The thermostat would be free under warranty, but the anode rod would have to be purchased. The customer agreed to pay for the anode rod. When the rod came in on Tuesday, I called and made arrangements with the member. She stated she would be home all afternoon. I was late in getting there due to the job in front of her taking longer than expected and I couldn’t leave until completed. After installing the thermostat, I realized I didn’t have the socket that would fit that particular brand of water heater. I called my employee and had him bring a socket to fit that brand at no charge to the customer. The two of us tried for 15 minutes to break the rod loose, but could not get it out. It was too corroded. My employee left and I proceeded to write up the bill. The member’s husband stated he smelled something in the basement, so he and I went back down to double check the unit. I did find a very minor leak which I repaired before I left the premises. When I left, both the members were very happy and told me they would write a good recommendation in Angie’s List. The member’s husband called two days later, very irate, and told me he still had problems. My response was that I would have to call the factory back to see what their recommendation was. I asked him for the model and serial numbers so I could call the factory tech line. In talking with the factory tech, I found that the original installer had not installed a pressure expansion tank to factory specs. (there is a log at the factory of all this information) I explained this to the customer and he became very angry. I said that since we did not sell or install the water heater incorrectly, we were not responsible. I offered to make the additional repairs, but he would have to pay for parts and labor. His response was to call me a *expletive* and said if I didn’t give him all his money back or fix it for free he would smear me on Angie’s List and the BBB, then hung up on me. About an hour later, he called back and left a voice mail message, which I still have on my phone, stating that he had talked to the factory for a 3rd time that day and had found that all I had told him was true. Because of his vulgar, abusive way of handling this situation, I felt it was wise not to have further dealings with this customer. Had the member’s husband apologized for his vulgar language and short temper, then I would have been very agreeable to go further with the repairs recommended by the factory. I made sure that this was included in the factory log when I talked to the tech line. Service providers should not have to bend over backwards and put up with vulgar, abusive customers. The member’s husband says he works in Customer Service, then he should have a better understanding of how it feels to be abused by a customer. Respect goes a lot further than abuse. He is not our worst customer, but he will be long remembered.

SATURDAY FEb. 6... Our check valved blew, destroyed massive parts of the house. I searched desparately for someone who would work on steam boiler and was open. Reached I & M heating. they came out to house The furnace repair man reassured me he'd have it fixed on Monday in less than 4 hours. gave estimate of $1200. A double homicide had occured less than 12 hours before, just 700 feet away . With all the police, turmoil, dryers, etc. you will see why the actiions of this "repair" person was more than inappropriate, costly, but also traumatizing and frightening to a 68 year old woman alone. MONDAY I & M heating said the part wasn't in in Michigan city, but it would be shipped to be there Tuesday. (later i was to find out that this part is actually manufactured in Michigan City) WEDNESDAY , he arrived at 11:10 AM. He put the new water main turn off in the wrong place so now i need to either get a new freezer or a new dryer (I just bought a new dryer a few months ago!). He left solder flicking on wall, floor, and my revereware pan. Then, at 1:30 P I went down ( he was muttering, swearing, etc.) He was reading the instruction manual for the install. He had installed it, but it woouldn't work. He checked electrical, etc. He looudly yelled This should be logical. It should work. It's going to be done". At 2:30 I went down again, he was again swearing, muttering, etc. on phone. I suggested we just put the old assembly back on, since it did work but needed to be watched. (as it turns out, that would have been the right thing to do since he would have found that the furnace didn't work with the old assembly and the problem was other places....) I offered to call the manufacturer from my phone; he angrily said " IT WILL WORK IT WILL WORK I'M GOING TO MAKE IT WORK" AT 3:30, I heard his cell ring. I heard him yell one of his words was "S***". (I'm assuming it was his workplace since he had been on the phone fairly continuously during these hours.) I went down and said what alternative/option was available since I could not be without heat and also pipes would freeze. He really angrily began to explain again about the popout valves, etc,. At 3:51 Julia from the insurance company called. (they were not paying furnace repairs... just house damage repairs) I told her of the presenting situation. She told me how to protect the pipes and also asked to talk to the furnace repair man. He again was on the phone, so I spoke with her answering her questions about damage. I then went downstairs again to have him talk to her... he was draining down the furnace... At that the insurance person backed off, she too realized the danger of an angry and volatile person. and I went back upstairs. He stated there was a big bunch of rust in the lower pipe preventing this from happening. So, essentially I had to pay for 3 1/2 hours "work" for him HIM TO LEARN to fix the system. AND at least $400 could have been saved if he would have talked directly to the manufacturer's technician. I realize he was frustrated and angry. But escalation of anger, swearing & cursing, is not at all helpful in installing a furnace check valve. . I immediately wrote a check to get him out of the house. (now the bill was $1600, bit /the 1200 written estimate). And I will never contact that company again. Oh yes, just remembered. On the furnace bill, he stated he arrived at 10A. I queried the time, he said "that's the time I spent GETTING the valve assembly"... HUH? Since when? On Saturday, he told me it would be sent to them from Michigan city...as had the secretary.

It was a horrible, horrible experience. AA Jeff was the name when I used them, but their truck and receipt showed I & M Heating and the owner said that AA Jeff used to be their name. They totally misrepresented themselves. It was terrible. I had already taken my dishwasher apart because I knew it was an electrical thing and they charge by the hour and it took him five minutes to do the repair. He fixed it and it worked great. He was supposed to be here at 5:30 and he called at 4:36 and said he was on his way. Their business was only 2 turns from my house and he called at 5:46 from another number and said that he was lost. He was rude on the phone. I live out in the country and I had given him directions. I could see him from my house and told him to come farther. I could hear him on the phone talking to someone. He arrived and put on the part and was done at 6:15. He charged me for 45 minutes when I knew that I was talking to him at 5:46. He also charged me for fuel, which they said there was a trip charge and then he charged me by the mile also. Nobody had said anything about a mileage charge. He was really cocky and arrogant. He was talking about how much money he had lost on his 401K. Then when he put the dishwasher back together he stripped the screws. It then broke a week later. I called and told him that it blew out again. He was going to charge me again to drive all the way out here, including fuel, mileage and trip charges. I told him to forget it and I bought a manual and figured out how to fix it. I ordered the part for $9.99 and it came with a fuse and wiring. He only changed the fuse and according to the instructions you are supposed to change all of it. I think when it shorts out it also does something to the wiring and makes it not as conductive or something like that. He never changed the wiring. He charged me $16 for a part that he didn't even use all of it. I called him back again and asked the secretary to review my bill one more time to make sure it was correct and she said that it was correct. I should have bought the manual in the first place but I didn't think it was going to cost me $150 for the repair. My dishwasher is 10 years old and it is working now. Their initial response time was super and he came out within a day.
Description of Work: I used I & M Heating because my dishwasher needed a part. It was a fusible link. He came out and changed the fuse. My dishwasher had quit working.
