Prior to buying the house I had Mr. Patrick give me an estimate for siding replacement. The first estimate was less than $400.00. After I purchased the house, he came to the house and gave me an estimate of $520.80. His crew of two men did a good job in replacing the siding in one day. However, I received an invoice for $798.39 after the job was complete. It was 53.3% higher than the second estimate. Mr. Patrick commented that siding is hard to estimate. He has been in business many years and had a good deal of experience in this kind of work and one would expect an experienced businessman to give accurate estimates. I chose him because I thought his estimate was a fair one. I would not have had issues if the cost was 10% above the estimate. But 53.3% above estimate is outrageous! The reason consumers want accurate estimates is to budget for the job and compare with other estimates. Since I want to deal with contractors who give accurate estimates of work, I will not use HMBH services in the future. I make this suggestion: BEWARE. In Response to Mr. Patrick's Response: My daughter used your services and had the same experience. You gave a low estimate and a very high final bill. From this experience, I suspect you tend to practice low estimates to get business.
Description of Work: Replaced approximately 14 pieces of damaged siding.

Response from Handyman By The Hour by Glanner Construction
We have been in business a long time and the estimated amount is normally very close to the invoiced amount. In the case of matching and replacing damaged existing vinyl siding, it is a very difficult call, thus the reason for the disclosure in the estimate to homeowners and a pre-work personal conversation that the job may be more involved - unfortunately estimating replacing damaged vinyl siding is not a science as there is a greater likelihood of unexpected obstacles (i.e. time to locate matching siding, matching color, profiles of siding that is no longer in production). In this case, the replacement siding profile was slightly different from the original and required additional time to create an appearance that closely matched the original - this job was more than simply removing/replacing a piece of vinyl siding. Our estimates specifically disclose that the invoice may be less than, equal to, or more than the written estimate. This is an unfortunate rare instance as we seldom ever exceed an estimated cost. I wish this Angie's List member well and if given the opportunity, we will strive to regain their trust. Thank you, Tim Patrick (owner).

The owner, Tim Patrick, examined what needed to be done on 2-28-13 and as I recall e-mailed me the estimate that same day. The estimate was for $206.44. The employee spent about four hours the morning of 3-1-13 completing the tasks. The work was completed in a very satisfactory way. Both Tim and the employee were very courteous and professional. It appears that the estimate was probably based on three hours of work rather than the four hours which were actually needed.

We had some new tile flooring installed a few weeks ago and needed four doors to be trimmed on the bottom. I contacted Tim Patrick via email and heard back very quickly. He and his carpenter came by and finished the job in under an hour. We have used Handyman by the Hour for many years and have been very happy with their work.

Response from Handyman By The Hour by Glanner Construction
The customer is correct that the job cost ($149.63) did exceed the estimate ($85.93). The reason is that an unforeseen step was required to facilitate the dog door opening repair. While HBTH strives to provide accurate estimates, an estimate is an educated guess at what a job may cost and how long it may take to complete – for this reason, HBHT discloses on every estimate that invoiced amounts MAY differ from estimated amounts (conversely, we have many instances of the invoiced amount being less than the estimated amount). We do thank the customer for the work opportunity and hope that we can regain their trust in the future. Thank you, Tim Patrick (President/owner).

They picked up the damaged door to see if they could find the wood to match the good bookcase door. The turnaround was great and if I could have coordinated it with our painter, HMBH would have taken to door to our painter so it was completely finished when installed. This company doesn't paint, so make sure you don't take that for granted. Their quality of everything else is good. this is the 4th project I've used them on and will use them again.

Overall, I am pleased with the results. I would not hesitate to use this company again. The two handymen showed up on time. Once the project (the replacement of the trim boards) started, however, the project seemed to grow and grow. The handymen discovered additional rotten boards that were not part of the initial estimate. As an end result, the price grew by more than 35% over the initial estimate. I did confirm that the boards that were removed were actually rotten and required replacement. The two-day project spilled into a third day. For this reason, I rated the price of the work as "good." I do believe that you get what you pay for. And we received high-quality workmanship at a good price.
Description of Work: We asked Handymen by the Hour for an estimate on two different projects. Firstly, our house had some wooden trim boards that needed to be replaced on the first and second stories. The cedar trim boards had rotted over time. The second project was the installation of a pull-down attic ladder in the garage. The estimate was thorough and our interaction was professional. Detailed photographs were taken of the rotten boards that needed to be replaced. The estimated price was about what I expected. It was mutually understood that if, after removing the rotted trim boards, there was additional work necessary (for example, additional rotten wood that needed replacement), then I would pay for the additional work at a negotiated price. I was informed the two projects in total would take two men two days to complete. I supplied the paint for the trim boards, and painting was included as part of this project.

I initially hired them to replace a screen our dog had broken through and torn down. Upon arrival they quickly determined that much of the wood had rotted out. The owner of the company showed me where the wood was rotted and how much needed to be replaced. He showed me that the porch was rotting because it had not been primed originally. He was willing to replace as little as possible upon my request. He recommended that I do additional repair work, but agreed to do the minimal amount as requested. As the job progressed, he kept me completely aware as further rotten wood was identified. I came to realize that what he told me initially was true and that much more needed to be replaced than I had wanted. In the end, they replaced all the rotted wood, including panels, molding, and trim, and primed and repainted all surfaces. In my opinion, they are the most professional, well informed handymen in the area.

tim responded promptly to my email request for an estimate for the work we wanted to have done. He came out within a day to give us an estimate and eve fixed a small problem we were having with one of the locks. Tim sent an estimate and we were able to have someone within the week finish the work. Great job. Turned out to take quite a bit longer than his original estimate but we were pleased with chris and his professional and thorough work. Would definitely recommend them. I have scheduled some plumbing work with Handymen by the hour and expect to be every bit as pleased.

Called Tim and told him what I needed. He sent an estimate out right away, and I signed and returned it (all via e-mail). We agreed to the price and time when his installer would be at my house. Tim e-mailed lated and said he could have Chris at my home even earlier - I said yes. Chris showed up promptly, put on foot protection, broght in his tools, and went to work. HBTH did the job quickly, everything was neat and clean, and Chris explained the work he performed, and told me about the disposal. He seemed to care about what he did. These guys are professional all the way.

We have used Tim's company many times over the years. When people ask us if we have used any handymen and to make a recommendation this is what we tell them. If you want lowest price, I'm guessing that Tim is not your guy but I have no reason to believe the prices are not competitive. Why we repeatedly call Tim for work to be done is because he does what he says he is going to do, when he says he will do it, and the job is done correctly and professionally. His staff is very professional. They do not look for extra work, in fact, they are always looking for alternative solutions to get things done in a more cost efficient manner. Also, Tim is very honest if he does not think it is a job he can handle, but can always recommend someone who does have any expertise he may lack.
Description of Work: Most recently they installed some new windows and repaired some others. They also installed a new storm door we had purchased. Earlier this spring they helped do some remodeling in our upstairs bathroom by doing some plumbing, electrical and carpentry work.

I sent an email to Tim Patrick of HBTH after reading several positive responses on Angie?s List providing one line descriptions of the eight items of work I needed done. To my surprise within one day I received an approximate cost estimate for the work and understood that it was ballpark and the labor would be charged on an hourly basis as the name of the company implies. As with any good business practice Tim wanted a signed copy of the estimate to know I was serious about them doing the work. I read some other reviews that thought the commitment to sign an estimate was onerous ? all I can say to those persons is it is a fair practice and cements the client-customer relationship that I would normally expect from any reputable business person. Also, after I expressed some concern over the timing of the scheduling Tim emailed me and said he just had a new opening and was able to come in a week earlier than he had originally indicated. The work covered many disciplines including electrical, carpentry and plumbing. All were completed to my complete satisfaction and without any wasted time to ?drive up? the fee. Chris was the main person on the job and worked through lunch time to complete all the work in a timely fashion. He also took the time make certain I was completely satisfied with the work before he left. He was excellent. Tim came by earlier in the day and completed some of the tasks while Chris was out buying materials. Tim is very personable and is very creative in solving problems. As you can tell by the write up I am completely satisfied with all aspects of the work they did. And this is not a negative, but more of a suggestion; since they charge by the hour, a listing of the hours on the invoice would be an improvement. Having said that, I kept my own record of the hours and after extending my totals by the rates I came with $1.00 of the $400.00 labor price on the invoice. That's pretty good.
