We began the process of ordering doors and windows in February 2011. Our home was built in 1922 and still had the original windows, doors, trim and plaster walls. We could feel the cold winter winds coming through, and our heating bills reflected how non-energy efficient they were. The team from Exterior Home Improvements came to our home several times. They not only brought their sales/design team of Steve Cunningham and Rick Kunzer, the the owner of the company, Steve Smalley, the project manager of installation, Matt, and their representative from Pella. They had excellent suggestions on reconfiguring some of our windows and how we could maximize the size of our new windows while keeping them appropriate to the period of our home. All of our windows and doors were different sizes; nothing was standard. They worked with their suppliers to make sure the product fit our home. Since we had plaster walls, the removal of the old windows and trim was not easy. They did an amazing job with very little damage. And they did a beautiful job fixing the few areas that needed it. They even fixed a hole my husband had made in the ceiling when he was installing a new light fixture. Our new windows and doors look FANTASTIC! Our only problem now is that we would like to replace all of the other trim in our home because it looks so shabby compared to the new. We would highly recommend EHI, and we would definitely use them on another project in the future.
Description of Work: Exterior Home Improvements installed double hung, casement windows, french doors and entry doors. Along with doors and windows, they replaced all of the surrounding trim.

I talked to them and we set the appointment. On the day of the appointment he called me and said he would be running late and that was okay with me. He came out and spent approx 20 Min and gave me a verbal estimate to replace my roof not including any wood that might need replacing. It seemed to me that he really didn't want to be here and maybe I was reading into this. He took down my Information and said he would email me a written quote with everything. As of today I have not received the Quote and it has been well over a week. I have a relative small home and the quote seemed kinda of high. Needless to say since I did not receive the written quote I am looking elsewhere.

This was the second time we used EHI. Initially we replaced some damaged windows and our sliding door in the back of our house in 2009. In 2010 we replaced the rest of our windows. We really enjoyed working with them and LOVE the product and the end result. We replaced over 25 windows (non-vinyl). We would definitely work with them again!

Every company I had contacted for windows showed up on time and explained the things well and had samples but the sales guy from Exterior Home Improvement Inc just wasted my time. He didn?t know anything, he showed up and wasted my time and didn?t have any samples and didn?t know how to describe the windows. I had rescheduled the appointment and he came back and he still didn?t know how to describe the structure of the windows and it was a very bad experience. I wouldn?t recommend him at all. He was just a mess. He also hadn?t taken appropriate notes of what I wanted and didn?t have all the things included in the quote. He was little high than others. He was completely disorganized and did not know his product at all. He didn?t respond to what I needed. I would not use him again in the future. I have read the response submitted by the company. I clearly told the salesman that I was not looking for the cheapest window, but was looking for the best window I could find for the best price to meet the needs of the specific building. I do not appreciate being made to look like someone who did not care about quality, only what was "cheap". That is not truth, as the contractor I did choose could easily support after I added quite a bit more to the job when the work and character of the contractor were proven. Yes, it is quite true that I was "not happy with the way [they] do business." I am even less happy after the response made.
Description of Work: Exterior Home Improvement Inc just came out and gave an estimate for replacement of eight windows of my office in April. The estimate was $3200.

This member was not happy with the way we do business which is usually much different than most other window companies. This is why we accumulate a lot of great reports from Angies List Members. When we go out on our first visit, it is usually just an evaluation. We carry many different window lines then our competitors. We carry about 3 different lines of Vinyl Windows, Infinity Fiberglass Window and about 3 different lines of Wood Clad and Wood Primed Windows. After the evaluation, we set another appointment to bring out the products that were discussed and the quote. We do not sell with pressure techniques. We are a company that believes that the homeowner can make an educated decision with what we present. This member wanted a very inexpensive window and did not want the higher end windows that we carried, so the project manager did his research and found an alike product on which the member was getting estimates on. The member did not like that particular inexpensive window and at this point we were at a lose, because we only had more expensive windows with a lot better features and a lot more quality built into the products. Our project manager tried to scramble and get the member yet another quote on a mid-level window; this obviously was much higher in cost. We unfortunately could not satisfy the member with the lower end product that we had. I think our sales techniques speak for themselves through our other Angies List reports. We are sorry that the member took our non-pressure sales techniques as a negative other than a positive. We will not change the way we do business since most member want a higher quality window. We can do cheap, but cheap is not our common course of business.

I considered this non-response very unprofessional. If he didn't want to consider the work because of his judgment that it was too small he should have stated so and not told me that he would have someone take a look at it..
Description of Work: Made phone contact to inquire about some exterior wood siding repairs. The person I talked to seemed completely uninterested. He said they were extra busy since the home show at the fair grounds this year. I described the repairs that I needed and he said that he had a work crew "in the area" and would have someone stop by and take a look. That was my last contact. He didn't actually say it but got the impression that the job was too small for him to consider. I won't contact him again for any work, big or "small".

First of all, this is NOT the Angies List Member who contacted us, it was someone else. Second of all, my project manager who talked to The Member explained to him that the siding repair was to small for our company and we referred them back to Angies List to look up a good handyman. We like to talk to our potential customers to see if the repair is either big enough for us to handle properly or if they actually need more then just a repair, in this case all the siding. A good company needs to define their ability to effectively do certain work in order to take care of their customers effectively, this in return creates a happy customer and this is and always will be our GOAL. Larger companies that try to do small repair jobs that are meant for a handyman may drop the ball and upset a customer or be to expensive, which also creates a bad reputation. Small companies or handyman services concentrate on smaller jobs and usually pass on bigger jobs because they do not have the team members to do those larger jobs. Exterior Home Improvement does larger repair jobs that we can send 2 or 3 person crews out to. Again, we determined that this repair job was not good for the potential customer nor the company for us to take on, we told this to the person of whom we talked with. I am sorry that The Member took offense to us declining to do the work. We were responsive from the beginning and we did tell The Member that we could not do the work. In a perfect world I think anyone would like to do EVERY JOB that comes there way, but that is not the case. I feel we do not deserve the F's and the majority our reports reflect differently!! Thank you, Steven F Smally, President.

The price was excellent. We shopped around for awhile. The owner came out personally and measured all the windows, talked to us and helped us to decide which windows to go with. We ended up going with Pella architectural windows and he negotiated the best price for us directly with Pella. He did more than expected in terms of customer service and the crew were a bunch of great guys. It was a wonderful experience. I've never dealt with a company that I liked as much as Exterior Home Improvement. When you are spending that much money it can be stressful but he made it very easy. We have an old house and it could've been a very difficult process but it went very smooth. He answered emails and phone calls promptly. From start to finish he did a very professional job. He delivered and installed the windows when he said he would. The woman at the office relayed messages in a timely manner as well.

They came and installed the windows on a miserably cold December day in order to help us meet the tax rebate deadline, and did a great job.
Description of Work: Dan Vogel came and gave us an estimate for 2 vinyl sliding windows and 5 double hung. Our original windows were single-pane casement windows and there were 2 or 3 side-by-side. Dan let us know we could just cut out the wooden center post and put in wide double hung or sliding windows (depending on the width. I was a bit skeptical, at first, but It really ended up great and I'm glad he convinced us. The glass to window frame ratio is much better this way. Another company tried to sell us the casement windows, and their estimate was three times what we ended up spending with Exterior home Improvements. Dan was a low pressure salesman, unlike some of the other places we talked to. I got the impression that Dan had done a fair bit of construction/home repair before becoming a salesman/manager, which was nice.

They were very friendly and did a good job. I liked their services and will use the same in future.
Description of Work: I used the services of Exterior Home Improvement Inc. for windows and doors, in September, 2010.
As previously stated the project went very well considering all the projects involved. We were extremely happy with the outcomes and the people who provided the products and services.
Description of Work: Exterior Home Improvement is an excellent company. The owner, Steve Smalley, the customer service manager, Steve Cunningham, his assistant Anita, Rob and the roofing crew, Tim and Teresa Christian, the siding crew, Scott Brown, the porch installer, Joe Caldwell, the mason, were all excellent. We also had storm doors installed. This wonderful team of people made the exterior of our home almost maintenance free. As we progressed through this extensive project a number of problems arose. This team of people headed intelligently and efficiently by Steve Cunningham solved those problems rather than covering them up for someone else to deal with later. Steve was always in contact with us either by daily visits or phone calls to check on progress. These people worked hard and efficiently and cleaned up after they were finished. We would and have recommended this company and these people, especially Steve Cunningham as a foreman overseer, to anyone interested in the services this company provides.

EXTERIOR HOME IMPROVEMENT INC. was great. I liked everything. The only thing I had a problem with was that the workers were smoking and budded the cigarette on our wooden deck and left it. That was my only complaint. The guy that was in charge was wonderful. He followed through from day 1. He was very understanding when we missed one appointment. He was always on time and informed us about everything from every step of the way. He tried so hard to make sure everything work fine and it did. They showed us how well it would work. They did an excellent job.

They left early the 1st day of install (on a Friday) stating "it might rain", and asked to come back for a "couple of hours" to finish on Saturday morning. They showed up at 10 instead of 9. I pointed out gaps in the window and lack of insulation which they "fixed." They stayed until 3, but loitered around for alot of the time watching the fish in our lake. They left the door to the house wide open everytime they went in and out. The install was so bad we could feel cold air blowing in our office around the windows. The trim work was shoddy - gaps and dings in the trim, no caulking around the framing, etc. The sales person came back out and said "wow, this room is 10 degrees colder than the rest of the house." They were scheduled to complete a repair "punchlist" 2 weeks later on a Friday and never showed up. I called the salesperson and he said "scheduling error" and they came on Monday. They caulked but it took them less than 2 minutes to do it so I don't know how good of a job that was. They told us that the cold air blowing in was from our walls and lack of insulation not the windows and left. The salesperson, Rick, was supposed to come to look at the repair work while the installers were here. I called him and he said he was coming right over to look at it before they left. He never showed up and never called again. I don't have ANY idea how this company had an "A" rating on Angie's List! Since then we have had 2 Carter Lee Lumber installers that are highly rated come out and look at our other rooms to replace windows and they said the install job even after repairs is really bad with shoddy trim work and fit of the windows.

Obviously there are two sides of every story, as you can see by all of our Angies List Reports and Grades; our company is all about customer service and doing the right job for our customers without exception. There are hiccups in construction, and we know that, so if something goes wrong, we stand behind it and will fix it and that is why you choose a good company. There is also a big communication gap between Mr. and Mrs. Member. We were contracted to install six windows in 4 rooms for the Member. The day of the install, which was a Friday, RAIN had moved in and our installers had to wrap it up and come back to finish on Saturday. The following week Rick, our project manager, received a call from the Member’s saying they had a couple concerns and Rick scheduled a time to meet with them to do a walk through. Rick met with Mr. Member and as they did the walk through Rick notice the office was colder than the rest of the home, as they indicated to him. This room was already colder than the rest of the house prior to our installation, that was one of the reasons they wanted new windows. As Rick did the final walk through, he noticed a few items (Punch Out List, which happens in construction) that needed touched up and pointed them out to Mr. Member, Rick then wrote these items down and told Mr. Member we would come back out to do the punch list when it was best for him or Mrs. Member. Rick also stated that when we came back out to do the punch list we would take the trim off in the cold room to make sure we insulated around the windows. After that meeting Rick received a call from Mrs. Member who expressed her concerns about the insulation in the window of the Cold Room and the installers hanging out by the pond on Saturday, which in fact our installers took a lunch break (we do eat lunch) and had a sandwich down by the pond. We scheduled the punch out for Friday, April 15th, of which the Member's wanted because of their BUSY schedule and then it rained; we do not work in the rain because of the electrical equipment, so we did call them and rescheduled for Monday April 18th. When our installers went out there and pulled off the trim in the office (cold room), there was in fact insulation around the window and we showed the Member’s that the window was properly insulated and the room being cold was NOT the fault of the windows, and the other upstairs three rooms were NOT cold and are not mention in the above report. During the Punch Out that day, which took several hours and not several minutes, Rick DID go to the Member’s home to check on our installers and the completion of the punch out list as promised. Mr. and Mrs. Member were at their home but they were in their bedroom, and Rick did not want to interrupt them. Eventually Mr. Member did come out of the bedroom briefly and our installer pointed out that there were two exterior crawl space vents that were frozen open UNDER the office (cold room) and gave his opinion that they could be the cause of the room being colder than the rest of the house and for Member to have it checked out. Since the window was insulated and was sealed properly, we could think of no other explanation as to why that room was colder than the rest of the home. When Rick left the home, all the punch out items were completed and the Member’s did not at any time say they were NOT satisfied. We are sorry that Mrs. Member feels this way but not at one time during any of Rick’s face to face meetings with Mr. Member was a major displeasure EVER expressed. Yes there were some punch out items, BUT Mr. Member was very understanding and appreciated that we would be back to resolve the issues. Rick was the project manager on this job and he did everything correct and he was in full communication with Mr. Northrop. As for Carter Lee coming out and cutting us down, unfortunately that is a common practice in our industry in which we do not participate in. As for the windows, Carter Lee does NOT do the Infinity Fiberglass Windows by Marvin and cannot do these windows at all. So for them to say we installed them improperly is just not right.

I contacted EHI when the siding on my home was in horrible disrepair and needed replacing. Steve Cunningham responded very quickly and brought samples of all the products and materials he recommended. He spent a great deal of time examining, not only my siding problems, but was extremely knowledgable regarding flaws in the installation of the original windows installed in 1994. These windows have leaked for many years, and Mr. Cunningham demonstrated the quality product I needed to remedy the situation. I was pleasantly surprised when I got a visit from the owner of EHI, Steven Smalley, whom also went over the entire project lending his advice and extensive experience to the job. I could not be more pleased with the efficiency and professionalism of the company. I have several other projects that will be entrusted to EHI in the future, since their prices are competetive and the materials Mr. Cunningham is providing will lower my utility bills and add to the value of my home. Actually, I look forward to making more home improvemants with total confidence. Mr. Cunningham has secured a faithful customer.

We had a good experience overall with Exterior Home Improvement. We did a price comparison with a couple of other companies recommended through Angie's List as well, but we were most impressed with EHI. They offered a 10% discount on our window and doors as an Angie's List customer, and they extended a further discount in place of the energy tax credit we would be missing due to installing after 2010. We signed the paperwork mid-December, with a 6-10 week estimate for installation. The original sill and trim for the picture window was able to be preserved, and the improvement to our exterior and interior is amazing! The side doors required more work on the part of the contractors, as the doorframe was connected to a pantry frame and an 8 inch kickboard in the side entry. They were able to replace the threshold, widen the doorway, and replace the trim, leaving the entire entryway better than they found it! Jenny and Dan were both always helpful and friendly. Dan even did a broken glass replacement in an upstairs window for a minimal charge, which saved us the trouble of locating another repair contractor. Only two small complaints on our part (which were reflected in our ratings). Due to the ice storm in February, our original installation date was cancelled, which was completely understandable. We waited for a call to reschedule the installation, but never received one. In late February we made the call to EHI; due to the storm, we somehow had slipped through the cracks for rescheduling. We were able to get on the calendar the following week, which was impressive. The day of the installation, the contractors were to show up around 9am but did not make it until 10:15am. That being said, the installation was complete by 4pm.

Overall the professionalism and responsiveness is an A+. However, I had unexpected bumps along the way. Along with the bumps their were many apologies (and $100 gift card) but I expected more on the service part with the money I had paid. The first bump was they installed the wrong door, it was installed poorly and it was supposed to be stained the same day and due to a lack of planning on their part prevented this from happening. 3 weeks later the correct door was finally installed and the install was top notch ( carpentry and alignments, etc.). However, again the staining was supposed to occur the same day and did not. Again after many apologies the staining happened about 3 days later. I absolutely love the door as the finished product but I wasn't "wowed" by the overall experience.
Description of Work: I had a back door installed. The original door was center hinged door and I had a patio door installed.

It has been great working with them. They have been good about everything. I had them install doors for me in the past and have had them out a few times since. I would highly recommend them to others.
Description of Work: I had them out to replace the stripping on two of my doors.

I was really impressed with the service level and honesty of this company. He gave his assessment and gave advice to repair damage. There gave us advice on handling the insurance company. He was very honest and cared more about doing the right thing for the customer rather than gaining unnecessary business. I appreciated the integrity of this company.
Description of Work: We had some water damage from the ice storm so I asked this company to come out and inspect the roof for damage.
