Exterior Home Improvement was great to work with. Being that the work was done in the winter months around the holidays we had to be a bit flexible with timing. Steve Smalley communicated with us during the entire process and there were no surprises. This was a large job with every window in the home being replaced. Additionally we took out a picture window and replaced it with a bay window. With the bay window we cut out about a foot and a half on each side of the original opening to install a massive bay window. The price of this job is deceiving as the bay window and the patio door accounts for half or more of the job. The fact that we have cherry trim on the interiors of the house, we had to find a vinyl window that was wood grain and cherry. That added to the expense. Steve did a great job of finding a perfect match for us. We ended up using American windows instead of Sunrise which was another option Steve presented. We did use Sunrise for the patio door. Had we not done every added option on the windows and door, we would have paid much less. However, we are thrilled with the look of the windows and how well they match with the interior and exterior of our home. I did not think we would find vinyl windows that would match so well with our interior. I thought were going to have to go with much more expensive wood or Andersen renewal windows. I am happy Steve found us the American Window option. In terms of install it was evident the installers were experienced and knowledgable. The lead crew member made sure things were done right. There were a few issues as expected with such a big project. Things were taken care of right away. We've had the windows for about a year now and we have no complaints. I will contact Steve first for our next project. Steve is a perfectionist and it is evident that his crews know that he will accept nothing less. As long as Steve is running this company, I will highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Replaced about 14 double hungs and slider windows. Cut out existing picture window with two casement windows and replaced it with a bay window. Replaced old sliding door wi new door.

Prior to the commitment Steve was meticulous in explaining and documenting exacting what would be done with what types of materials. Its had to imagine a more complete contract for a home improvement effort. The crew came when they were expected and completed the job on time. They cleaned up every evening before they left and were careful to place protection on plants and our neighbor's home when they were taking off the old roof. The crew was polite and professional throughout the project. The roof looks great and we should be set for weather for the next 30 years.
Description of Work: Replace the roof of our home and garage including tear off of existing roofs. The current passive vents were replaced with one power vent. They also had to replace and paint trim material in a couple of places.

The carpenter came on time, was very polite and very professional. He took out somewhat vague request and crafted a very nice set of railings including putting the bottom stair railing supports down 30" in concrete. The wood is all treated and will need to cure over the winter before we can prime and paint it, but that was an agreed to choice. The effort took a day and 1/2 and everything was cleared up in the evenings and brought out again the next day.
Description of Work: Our existing front porch lacked railings on stairs and around the porch itself. The job was to place railings on both sides of the stairway and railings around 2 sides of of porch not enclosed by the house. We also needed the porch soffit repaired when it had been rotted out from water damage.

Kris stated the insurance company did not include the chimney flashing. He would ask for it. I agreed to the flashing. A couple days later I received a call from the insurance company wanting to know about a request for an additional $12,000.00 for metal for the valleys. I told them there is no way the contractor has already signed a contract and stated he could do the job for the amount listed on their first report. The insurance company stated they would send their inspector back out to review the questioned area. The final results that the inspector's manager stated were: "It was not previously installed, therefore we will not pay for updates." We requested our money back and they kept 20%. No work was started and no materials were delivered to the residence. Therefore we felt we should have received a full refund.
Description of Work: We had a hail storm come through our area on Aug. 9 2012. Kris Kassen came by representing Elbert Construction. He looked at our roof and told us we had hail damage and had us sign a paper so his boss would know he was not goofing off. We asked for a bid. He stated he would bring it by. He also called the insurance company to make arrangements to be there when the inspector was there. Again we asked for a bid. I'll bring it by. He returned a couple weeks later with his computer to tell us how great his company was, still no bid. Finally he said after looking at the insurance report, they would do the job for what the insurance report stated. He was asked several times if they would do the job for the amount of $21,869.62 which he wrote on a contract open valley bronze metal that is required for presidental shake shingle installation. We asked again to make sure he would do the job right for that price. The answer was yes and he asked for a check for $10,934.81 for material which we gave him figuring we could not get out of the paper he had us sign in the beginning, which gave them the job.

Response from Elbert Construction Inc
At Elbert Construction we strive to be a company that operates with the highest integrity. Our reputation is extremely important to us. Seeing a comment like this on Angie’s List is very concerning to us. However, we have honored everything that we agreed to in our contract with the homeowner. At our initial meeting with this customer we did an inspection of their roof for hail damage. Upon inspection we found significant hail damage to their roof. We showed this damage to the customer and explained to them the insurance process. We signed an agreement with the customer stating that we would invest our time and expertise in assisting them with their insurance claim, for that investment of our time and expertise the homeowner agreed that we would do the work for the insurance proceeds and their only out of pocket expense would be the deductible amount. Kris Kassen met with the customers insurance company and walked through all of the damages that the home incurred from the storm. The insurance company agreed that the roof needed to be replaced along with the gutters and gutter screens. Once the customer received the estimate from the insurance company, Kris Kassen met with the customer and reviewed the whole estimate. He signed a contract with the homeowner for $21,869.62 Plus Supplements and explained to the homeowner that he was going to go back to the insurance company and request that some additional items be paid for that were missing in the insurance company’s estimate. These items were things that needed to be done in order for the roof to be installed properly. These items included: The shingle type (The insurance had them estimated as a High Grade Dimensional shingle, when they were a Shake Look Premium Designer Shingle) Steep Charges because the roof was steep W-Profile Valley Metal Ice and Water Shield High Profile Ridge Cap Roof Vents Drip Edge/Gutter apron Chimney Flashing Step Flashing Pipe Jacks Kris Kassen did everything he told the customer he was going to do in assisting him with his insurance claim. The insurance company paid more than $6000 in additional funds as a supplement to replace these items. After the insurance company paid the additional money, the customer asked to get out of their contract. Our agreement with the homeowner states that the homeowner has a right to cancel and agrees the pay the contractor an amount equal to 20% of the contract price for this reason. Although no work was performed, Kris invested countless hours of his time and expertise in assisting the homeowner with their insurance claim just like he agreed to in the agreement he signed with the homeowner. After initial assessment of hail damage, Elbert presented options and recommendations for replacing entire roof. We selected them to do the work. Elbert's representative, Kris, was extremely patient and professional as we struggled with selecting a roof material/color. He also handled almost all the insurance related communication, including supplements to the original claim adjuster's assessment to cover addressing hail damage to our deck and some other miscellaneous damage. The roofing work was done in only two days. No issues during replacement, post replacement clean up was as thorough as promised. Roof looks great, we ended up being very happy with the color we chose which was also the one most recommended by Kris to begin with. Gutter replacement took place a little later, again no issues. The deck strip/stain also occurred a little later and the results look fantastic. Overall we can find nothing to complain about. It's difficult to come up with any constructive criticism at all. We selected them based on their portrayal of themselves as a well organized and professional company that emphasized training/expertise of their employees, and after the work was finished we consider them to have lived up to that image.

We've just joined Angie's List and the first review we wanted to write was a no-brainer, it had to be for Elbert Construction! They replaced our old roof about 2 years ago and we've been thrilled with their performance since before the actual work was completed. They were very responsive during the stage where we asked questions and they provided detailed and honest answers. They were competitive in their pricing, giving us a great value for the amount of work they would have to do in order to remove 3 layers of old shingles. We suspected that the roof had that much weight up there but they confirmed it! During the messy tearing off stage they were all about getting that old stuff off quickly but not at the expense of our landscaping! When they were done with that step we looked clean and neat. We even laughed as we took a walk around our house to see if we could find any debris left on the ground...nothing, we looked great and we didn't even have our new roof yet. When they were finished installing our new shingles we certainly had something to be proud of! We chose a subtle, dark, dimensional shingle and it made our house look great! Not only would I recommend Elbert Construction to family and friends, we have!

The materials were delivered on a Friday to my driveway. These were placed exactly where we had asked. A crew came out the following Wed. and began removing the old roof. They were careful to cover plants and ground area around the house before they began. They were able to start the new roof that same day. They returned the following day and completed the work. The clean up of the mess was adequate, but I did have to do some additional sweeping after they left on my front porch and back patio. Also, they moved the patio furniture off the patio into the yard before the work began, but failed to return it after they completed the work. They did use a magnet roller to pick up nails and such and a blower to remove debris from the gutters, the porch and patio areas. They did a good job of picking up all the tar paper that had blown all over the yard. The roofing materials they used are a definite upgrade to the old roof which was only 6 yrs. old. We are pleased with the work that was done. Also, the salesman, J.R. Lynch was very professional and helpful throughout the process. He even took the time to double check my gutters to make sure there was no debris left in them after the project was completed. I would highly recommend working with him.

We were very happy with total process. Elbert started by asking to review shingled roof to see if we had encountered storm damage. They reviewed the roof and felt there was enough damage for insurance oompany to be asked to review and verify damage. The Elbert rep worked with our insurance agent to verify damage, work out agreeable value and all the paperwork. Our roof has about 40 squares. The roof system was removed down to roof deck, new felt, water shield and roofing installed in less than two days. At the completion of work, all shingles were placed in a dumpster and they did a great job in cleaning up the yard completely around the house. I think we only found a few nails. Our roof looks great, no leaks, we are very happy with the work.

Whole project was trouble free from beginning to end. The owner, Steve Smalley, came out to the house twice to discuss detailed observations and suggestions--without any undue sales pressure. A very comprehensive contract outlining every detail that was discussed during our walkthroughs was then drawn up. In spite of weather issues, work was started pretty much as promised. Everyone associated with the job introduced themselves, and the project manager, Lee Phillips, checked the site regularly and called almost every day. The workmen were courteous and professional--especially the lead carpenter, Jerome Horachek, who couldn't have been nicer and more conscientious. He obviously takes great pride in his work. When the painting crew took over, it was the same story. John Braham and his coworkers checked to make sure that I was satisfied with the color choices and kept me apprised of their schedules--including lunch breaks. They even let me know when they would be working near a bathroom window as a courtesy! When the project was completed, the yard and garage were thoroughly checked for debris. This is the first out of many home repair/renovation projects that has been totally stress free. The workmanship is excellent, and we have received many complements from neighbors on the finished product. We would definitely recommend Exterior Home Improvement, Inc.

I called for price quote and estimated interval to install two exterior security doors. I was verbally promised one week delivery/install. Color of doors on quote was black, which I did not want. I changed color of doors to white. I faxed acceptance of quote on 3/6/2012: gross price $1702, less Angie's List 10% discount, equaled $1532 net due for work. I paid 25% down payment They did not notify me that there would be a delivery date delay because of the color change in the doors. Actual door install date was 3/29/2012. Then I still could not use the doors for security because the locks were reversed: deadbolt on top. I kept waiting for them to flip the deadbolt lock and the latch lock on each door. They had all of these issues with getting the locks to work properly. What good is a security door that does not lock?? I had to call Rick Kunzer several times to get this straightened out and they had to come back to the house several times to get this taken care of. I was also interested in replacing the service door on the garage and I asked for a quote. I never did get that from them, although they took the measurements at least twice. Rick told me he would "take care of me" and get me the garage service door at cost. He said they were in "busy time" right then, but he would "get back to me when things slowed down." I guess maybe he thought I would forget all about everything. I got a letter dated 3/27/2012 from Steven Smalley, President, that said to contact Kim McQueen if I experienced any problems. I called and left a message and Rick called. So I really never got to let anyone else at the company know that they did not meet my expectations. Another thing that I did not like was that, after the door install, they charged my credit card for the 75% balance that I owed them without asking me. I did not intend to pay them the entire 75% balance due until after the lock issue was resolved. I would have kept back 15%-20% until all of the work was completed to my satisfaction and according to the accepted Quote.

***I would like to address the fact that this homeowner says his credit card was charged without his permission. I take credit card charges very seriously. I do not EVER charge someone’s credit card without their knowledge. This homeowner told us he was paying the balance with his credit card, just like he paid the down payment with it. We actually didn’t charge him a processing fee, which is standard with credit card payment and Rick took $100 off for the inconvenience on top of that. The homeowner was left several messages letting him know that we were charging the final payment since the job was done. He had every opportunity to call me and let me know if he wanted to use another form of payment. Considering the fact he had no problem calling Rick or the office any other time, he has no grounds to accuse me of doing anything unethical. I don’t appreciate him out right accusing me of doing something like this. It is an insult to my character and I take it very personally. Normally I am very apologetic if I or our company has dropped the ball in some way, in this case this homeowner is lying. I have no regrets in saying that because I do not deserve to be accused of being unethical. -Kim McQueen The customer is not correct in the information he is giving. He is correct that the original contract was for a black door and the vendor said they could get that door on the next truck because it was a stocked item. He had an attempted break in and was concerned about security. The customer decided after that to change the color of the door to white. At which time he was notified that it may take longer because that door would have to be painted and coated so it would not rust. He was a little put off at the time but understood and we moved forward with the order. As soon as the door came in we went out of our way to schedule an installer to come out the home after a full day to install his doors because he was concerned about the break in he had prior to contacting us. They installed the doors but the handles from his entry doors were bumping up against the new security handle so they installers reversed them so there would be no problem. They forgot to do the same to the other door and the customer called me. I had another installer, who lived close to him go out to his home, that late evening, and reverse them so the doors would lock and be secure. The lock sets were not what he wanted, so I purchase the locks he wanted and gave them to the installer who lived close to him to make the switch. He was too busy and could never meet up with the customer and that’s when the call came in saying he was not happy. I called him, told him I would get the locks and come down and put them in myself, which I did. At that time we noticed they were not all using the same key, so I ran out to Home depot twice in order to make sure all his locks worked with one key. I finished and he seemed happy. I had also taken a $100.00 off the total contract for the inconvenience. Again, he seemed happy and I left. The homeowner had mentioned the other door, which was not a standard install. It would have required a lot of extra concrete work, etc. He never contacted me to indicate that he wanted to pursue it at that point. I feel I went above and beyond to ensure his satisfaction. I don’t feel he would’ve been happy either way. -Rick Kunzer

A Large tree in our back yard fell on our screened in porch and hail of the house Elberts came out gave us an Estimate (one of three) We also had a previous leak around our fireplace They worked with us on fixing the soffits and fascia and leak around the fireplace not included with insurance The workers came in worked steadily completed the job, They took extra time to make sure the leak around the fireplace was fixed, While replacing some of the rafters on the screened in porch one of the guys slipped and fell thru the ceiling was not concerned about himself but concerned we would be upset, he wasn';t hurt but did knock the wind out of him. very nice crew,They then cleaned up all the mess, including picking up the nails with a metal detector. After carefully looking for their information I placed it within another customer who I prepared an estimate for and totally forgot to get a quote back to this customer. We have been extremely busy, which is no excuse. I go through my folders daily and never came back across their information since it had been put behind someone else’s. I try to set reminders in my calendar as well as my phone. It was a mistake, which we all make. This is not a common practice of mine or Exterior Home Improvement. The request was not meant to be ignored and I have since apologized to this customer for not getting back to them. Respectfully, Rick Kunzer

We did not have Exterior Home Improvements do our project, but we were extremely happy with Mark's knowledge, professionalism, and communication throughout the estimate process. We would recommend this company!
Description of Work: We had Mark come out to give us an estimate on replacing all of our vinyl window and our sliding door in our home. He gave us options at different price and quality ranges, which we appreciated.

First, they were nice in working with me during the time frame I needed. They removed the rotten boards, power-washed the garage, replaced trim as needed, and painted the garage. When the bottom boards were removed, the pull on the next board above made some of those nails loose/ caused some cracking. Rick Kunzer, my project manager, was concerned and had these fixed. However, he didn't think it looked good enough, so he came back himself and re-fixed them with a harder substance and sanded them down before they were painted again. Then he felt the paint on these areas didn't perfectly match the rest of the paint, so he had his crew put another coat on the whole garage! It looks great!! I'm very happy with their work.
Description of Work: The bottom 1-3 boards on my garage were rotten, the whole garage was very dirty and needed painting. The trim around the doors was peeling.

Brant, the agent with whom we have worked for several years from this company, came to the house took measurements and provided us with information about options and allowed us time to review them using catalogs he provided. Once we were ready, we exchanged emails and clarified matters and ultimately chose what we wanted. We paid a 30% downpayment, the order was made, and a couple of months later they were installed. The new front entry way is beautiful and well insulated (even in 100 degree days, the inside surface of the door is room temperature which is SO much better than what we had!). The garage service door is excellent. In fact, it is so good that we've ordered another one for another garage door. I have probably not been as good about filing my Angie's List reports on this company over the past 10 years- sorry. We have used this company to replace about 50 windows and siding on our house. No regrets- ever. Always satisfied with the quality of their work, their workers, and the results.
Description of Work: Our front (wood) entry way was decaying and had never been very well insulated (though we compensated by adding a storm door) and we wanted it replaced. In addition a garage service door was warped and needed replacement as well.

We did not hire this company, this time.
Description of Work: Rick Kunzer gave us an estimate to replace 2 large windows with patio doors. Rick was thorough and professional. He was punctual and came out quickly to take a look at the job. We did not hire this company because the price was too high. However, getting the estimate from them was a great experience.
