I am very pleased with my windows - not only the quality of the windows and price, but the professionalism of the installers was outstanding. My opinion, that is hard to find, but I felt very comfortable with the installers and their work was great. Even better - the clean up was unbelievable.
Description of Work: Exterior Home Improvement has now replaced all of my windows. I did it in 3 stages - not only because of my budget, but also because of the immediate need. I never felt like I was being just "sold" windows. I replaced the windows most urgent first, then went on to stage 2 and finally the last 3 windows. Even the last 3, I waited because there was a better product at a better price, told to me by Exterior Home Improvement.

When we first met Exterior Home Improvement, Ben to be specific, my husband and I were both quite impressed by the no-nonsense approach to sales that Ben brought to the table. Neither of us is the type of person to need a sales person to finesse us to get a sale - and Ben wasn't that kind of guy. We met Steve later on in the process, and he was the same way - no-nonsense and knowledgeable about their line of business. I am the over-obsessing type, so we met with 7 different companies to price our project - all of which came off of Angie's List. Exterior Home Improvement wasn't the cheapest and they weren't the most expensive. We really appreciated the sales approach, found the product to be acceptable and felt like Ben would be sure the job was properly managed and completed - who can object to a project plan that includes a crew large enough to install 28 windows and cut out/install a door in 3-6 days? We didn't negotiate the pricing that was offered, accepted it and moved forward with our project. After the job was all settled and we were ready to get it all going - we handed over our check for the deposit on 28 August 2014 and were set to get this massive project underway. Ben gave us a completion date of mid-October originally, but we did add to our order in the interim to cut in a door, so we revised that completion date to the end of October. The very last day - 31 October 2014. Time went by and no call, they also hadn't cashed our check, but still no call to schedule the installation days. Time went on and on, with many hounding calls to the company, until we finally saw our check cashed 4 November 2014 and got the call that they were going to start work in mid-December, with a final completion date as we grew to experience it of 31 December 2014. I'm not saying that our home didn't have its own issues that cost additional time - we bought a foreclosure that was vacant for over 3 years. I'm also not saying that this was a surprise to anyone involved. But only 2 guys, except for a few days with a third, and a massive project - it's expected that they'll need some time, it's just not what we were told when we signed on with Exterior Home Improvement. Not to reiterate it all -but we were already 2 months behind the date we signed up for without any other contact except to say that they were so delayed due to weather preventing them from working -and we had to initiate the calls. It should be noted, in all fairness, that I did resist the urge to look up each and every day of rain that we received between mid-October and mid-December to see if there were, in fact, THAT MANY rains days. We'll chalk it up to giving the benefit of the doubt. Did I mention that it also took over 3 weeks to get a balance in and a window repaired for a window that sounded like a gunshot going off when it opened from the time it was installed - after we wrote them the check for the completed project? Time seems to be a difficult thing to manage and plan for when using Exterior Home Improvement. My husband and I have spoken numerous times about the frustration and delays and both agree that we would have been totally duped and in an awful position had it not been for Hilary and his guys when they showed up, again 2 months late, to put in our windows. The crew was AMAZING! The crew saves Exterior Home Improvement - and only the crew. These guys were fantastic! If you're looking to have your yard completely beautiful and clean throughout, or even after, the project - forget it. But if you want guys that are going to do the best job for you and that you can trust completely - Hilary is that guy, and his crew is just as amazing! For two people that had had a TON of other issues with contractors and the massive project we know as our foreclosure home - we really were trying to find the company that would make one portion of this easy for us. Having to call and follow up on when our project would start, when the replacement parts would be in, when it would all be finished, etc. was a massive inconvenience, and in our minds, completely unacceptable. Our neighbors have had work done with another company since we started this window project and had none of these delays and problems. We were really looking for the same thing. When Hilary starts his own company - we'd like to work with him. Otherwise, we'll be searching for another company to help us finish the rest of our projects in a more easily manageable, reliable and timely fashion.
Description of Work: We had full replacement windows put throughout our entire home and a new sliding door installed in the back of the house, where windows had previously been.

Response from Elbert Construction Inc
We at Exterior Home Improvement are all confused about the majority of this homeowner's review. To begin with, the statements about the time line of this job are easily explainable. As the home owner states, she did sign a contract with EHI for windows at the end of August. On September 16th the home owners added a door to their job and wrote another check to EHI for down payment on the new door. In adding a door to the original job, the time line changed for installation, which is usually 6-8 weeks. On October 8th the homeowners changed their original window contract from "retro-fit/insert" windows to "full tear out" windows, this not only added a change order because of price increase, but also changed the type of window to be installed. This again pushes the projected start date out further. Considering there were two changes made to the original contract, one in September and one in October, it is safe to say that this home owner had open communication with both Ben and Steve. Start dates or estimation thereof are discussed with every homeowner, although the original would've been the end of October, adding a major change in the beginning of October would've pushed that out 6-8 weeks with perfect weather. Weather does hold things up on jobs that are not interior work, which is the majority of our work. If it rains a lot in April or May that could push jobs back that may be scheduled for July. If we are on a job that we find unforeseen issues and we have to address them, that can hold up the next jobs start date, the one after that job and so on. It is an imperfect process but we do our best to finish jobs in a timely manner and not rush so they are completed properly so the home owner is happy. Our crews have always had 2, occasionally 3 members, that is nothing out of the ordinary and the norm for most companies. As the homeowner states, she was very happy with our 2-3 person crew. We never want anyone to be unhappy with our service, the product or the installation. It is confusing to us that this homeowner says they feel "duped", the only issue we see is that she didn't like the change in start dates. The issue with the manufacturer was a part that was defective, we ordered a replacement part and again the issue is the time frame in which we received the part. In the end she was happy with the installation and if she feels the time line changes were more monumental than her job being done properly, we're sorry she feels that way.

The salesman was really good at first and then the day that they came out, they didn't tell me that they are coming so I got stuck in my house for a while, I couldn't get out to go to work. I thought they did a fine job but then I realized I was still having leaks in the upstairs hallway. I had to call them back and I noticed, aesthetically, there were some issues at the roof for the flashing, it was terrible. It didn't even blend with the roof. The owner finally came and they tried to make it right but it took a long time.

The cost, while not cheap, was a very good value in my opinion, when one takes into consideration the quality of materials used and amount of professional labor involved. I interviewed 3 windows/siding companies before choosing EHIMP. I made my choice based on 1) the promptness of EHIMP in replying to my inquiry; 2) the cost (all 3 estimates were in the same ballpark range); and 3) the initial meeting with Matt Waters (project manager). Matt Waters and Steve Smalley came to my home in late August to measure the windows and offered some helpful tips and insight. Steve suggested that instead of ordering the white hardware (as I had previously ok?d), that they order oiled bronze hardware to keep with the character of my older home. That turned out to be a very good suggestion. I am very pleased with the overall windows installation. Weather delays caused the start of the work to be delayed a few weeks, but that was due to Mother Nature (not EHIMP). Matt was good about keeping me informed about the schedule. The windows installation went as scheduled, except rain one afternoon caused the project to spill over into the following day. I needed to go to work that morning, so Darren and Brett (amazing and talented window installation guys) altered their schedule and arrived early to do the interior work, and I was able to go to work while they completed the exterior work. When a professional contractor demonstrates this kind of flexibility to work with the homeowner?s schedule, that is a big plus. I am pleased with the quality and workmanship of the Preservation windows. One window mullein was noticed to be crooked upon installation, but Matt Waters looked at it later that day and immediately put in an order for a new window. Darren and Brett were very courteous and respectful while inside and outside my home, taking care to lay down tarp and close doors when they came in and out of the home. While working on the ?tear out? portion of the windows (during 2 very cold days in November), they were careful to completely seal off the areas where they were working with plastic canopies, so that the least amount of cold air possible was allowed to enter my home while they were taking out the old windows, and replacing them with the new ones. I also appreciated how Steve, Matt and the windows representative made periodic visits to my home to see how the work was progressing. I?m very pleased with both the ?tear out? and retrofit work. I continue to walk around my home and admire my new ?view? and notice that I no longer have old, cobweb filled, drafty windows! I can?t wait for Spring when I can open ALL my windows and enjoy lovely views and fresh air and Spring breezes! I would hire EHIMP again and plan to recommend them to others.

After much research on what type of siding I wanted, I decided on Hardiplank (replacing the cheap vinyl siding that was on my home). I wanted a sturdier material and better insulation, and I wanted to enjoy my home while I still live in it, as well as improve the resale value a few years down the road. Matt Waters (project manager) came to my home and gave me a lot of information about Hardiplank siding. I knew that was the way to go. Work began in October 2014 and took about 1 ½ weeks to complete. The crew arrived early each morning, went to work and kept working until they reached a good stopping point late each afternoon. I really enjoyed the siding crew (Dave, Kevin and Steve). They are great guys who are also very skilled at their trade. They were very meticulous in measuring, cutting and applying the siding to the sides of my home. They even built special frames around my exterior faucets and stove and dryer vents. I already feel like my home is much warmer and better insulated. The siding crew added wood fiberboard and Rainwrap waterproofing underneath the new siding, giving my home even more protection from the elements. I can?t stress how meticulous and careful they were in their work, as if they were working on their own homes. They even replaced 3 exterior light fixtures for me. They also removed an old cupola from my garage roof and refurbished it by replacing some rotting wood and it looks as good as new. The whole process, from start to finish, went well. No homeowner really enjoys the mess, disruption of schedule, etc., that is necessary when having home improvements done, but Steve, Matt and their contractors made the process as seamless as possible and as enjoyable as possible for me, the homeowner. I also like how EHIMP uses separate crews for each process (windows guys that ONLY do windows, siding guys that ONLY do siding, etc.). I also appreciated seeing Matt and Steve from time to time, as they would come to my home and inspect the work and check to see if I had any questions. The Hardiplank representative came out the day before the siding was to be installed, to check the materials to ensure its quality. The weather turned too cold for EHIMP to paint the exterior of my home, but they will return in the Spring to finish up the work. EHIMP also installed new gutters, downspouts and gutter guards and I am pleased with the results. Overall, I?m very happy with the work done and I would hire EHIMP again.

We found EHI on Angie's List and compared their price to other Pella vendors. As they had good ratings and the best price, we went ahead with them and it was a great choice. Ben McWhorter guided us through the window options. He even brought the Pella rep with him to review the brochure. The work was done on time. The window installers were great. They arrived each morning at the appointed hour. Their work was neat and clean and the window installations were perfect. The final staining went smoothly and we couldn't be more pleased with the results. We plan to use EHI again next Spring to paint the inside and outside of our house.

The Exterior Home Improvement crew did an excellent job. They were on-time, professional, courteous and true craftsmen. I was very pleased with the work performed and the daily clean-up. They did a very thorough job re-insulating any voids and caulking the exterior finish. There was one window that I wanted some changes on the trim and the team made the changes without issue or additional cost. I would definitely use this company again for any home maintenance or improvement.

I was extremely pleased with the process and installation. At first I thought I would install wood windows with exterior metal cladding as we have an older home. Ben McWhorter came to our house several times with some window samples so I could compare and review. Over time, he convinced me to go with vinyl windows and I am very glad I did. I am very particular and difficult to please and it was a challenge finding an appropriate exterior color for our house. Ben was very patient and accommodating as I took awhile to finalize my decision. The color was special order and Ben kept us informed on the expected schedule date. The installation went great. The guys centered the new windows exactly and replaced all of the interior trim. The exterior metal cladding was bent/molded to mimic wood trim. The guys cleaned up everything every day. After the job was done, I needed a color sample for the exterior painting. Ben went out of his way to deliver the color sample in time for the painters The service was great. I would definitely use EHI again. I love our new windows. It was a long process to decide on windows and vendors and a lot of money and I'm happy with our choice to use Exterior Home Improvement and install Preservation windows.

It was just wonderful! We had such a hard time trying to find someone to come out to work on the old siding as it was falling apart. Birds and bees were nesting inside. Steve Smalley came out and explained (in detail) everything they'll do and what we'll expect. He was right on it! They replaced half the house with wood siding and painted the entire exterior - also added shutters. The house looks absolutely amazing.

Elbert Construction was very professional. The sales representative, Jay, provided excellent service. Working with the insurance claim adjuster, Elbert Construction made sure that all local roofing code requirements were identified. After all needed roofing code requirements were identified and approved by the insurance company; the work was scheduled and performed. The old roofing was removed prior to the installation of the new roofing. The roofing job was completed in one day. The crew did an excellent job and left the work area clean and free of debris from the roofing work. We are very satisfied with the completed roofing installation. Elbert worked with us to make sure that everything was satisfactory. We would recommend Elbert Construction to anyone who needs roofing work.

JR was absolutely great to work with. Very professional! Elbert did a great job on our re-roof. We have a big roof, which is also steep. They put 2 crews on our job and had it done in one day! Amazing! They were a little bit more expensive than some other roofers we talked to but their high level of professionalism gave us the absolute confidence that the job would be done when we needed it to be done and the work would be high quality. That's important. We certainly were not disappointed. They did a great job! We absolutely would use them again. In fact, we already have called them again about another repair.
