As submitted to the BBB.org. -- On 6/8 -- initial call-- all staff left for day. 6/11/2015 @ 11:16:19am I received called to report that my sliding door was not closing. I had requested service. I inquired that the door was purchased from SPC and was told there would be no service fee because the door was under warranty. The service call did not occur till end of august 2015. After such call, I was notified of a pending payment for service in the amount of $125 dollars. I was not made aware of any such charge that would occur prior to the service call despite my inquires as noted above. Transcribed recording -- available. Furthermore, had I known there would be a charge of this extent I would not have pursued the repair, as it was a screen door and not the major door. I was not even present to verify there was a mudd dobber nest at time of service call. I rec'd a message on voice mail indicating performed work. Again I was not informed of a service call charge or the amount to which it would be. >>begin transcription -- I got your message about the service on your sliding door. I've got...My only guys are working on a big job this week. But as soon as I got them running services, they will give you a call to set up a time to come up, and do an adjustment on that to get that working for you. Okay, Do I have to be there? if it is just the screen, probably not. As long as it is not the glass part of the door. No it is just the screen. You shouldn?t have to be there, but they will still call you to let you know they are going to be there. How much is the service call? Well since you have a Provia Sliding door, it should be under warranty. Yep, all the parts and everything should be warranteed on that. okay. Okay. Just keep me posted. i will, we?ll give you a call as soon as we can get somebody up there. Thank you. Thanks, bye-bye. ?end When I contacted Richard on 9/23, I informed him of the above and things got worse from there. I advised him that I would post to BBB.org. Just an acknowledgement that something wasn't conducted right -- should be acknowledged, but no apology or anything. I must admit, I lost my cool called him a name, but it is frustrating for someone to insinuate that by the looks of it, you can afford it. He also threatened to VOID my warranty if not paid. Now I will pay, but after the review of the BBB.org. i agree that service calls should be paid for, I should have had to option to cancel or not agree to the service call if I had been informed of the costs, hey it was just a screen door. No big deal, been that way almost as long as I had it. Not like it was the glass door.

Of course, no one likes an unhappy customer. (Removed member name) called us and told us her sliding door would not operate. The script we use when handling such calls is "If the problem is under warranty there will be no charge, if not, there will be a service charge." If the customer says please come and fix the problem, we do. If they ask us how much is the service charge, we tell them with an explanation that it is only a minimum and if it runs more than one hour at their house it could be more. We have handled Service Requests this way for years. On this particular problem, it was a dirt dobber's nest that was impeding the sliding door from operating. Our men cleaned the track, and got the door working. We have had the same service charge for the past 2 years. It is $125.00, minimum service charge. We send an F-250 Pick Up Truck (complete with tools, ladders, etc.), with two technicians (professionally trained), and fully insured. The average service call takes 2 1/2 hours with traveling time. I don't think any of the above information is the complaint from (Removed member name). Her complaint is we told her the door was under warranty with no further conditions explained to her. Again, after 43 years of working with the public, we have scripted our statements to include any and all conditions which would effect this kind of situation. I would like to add (Removed member name) offered to pay SPC $75.00 for the service call. This tells me it isn't a matter of SPC doing something wrong; it is a matter of (Removed member name) trying to negotiate a cheaper settlement for the service call. I explained to her our price was $125.00. That is the same price we charge all of our customers, and it would be unfair to all our other customers to charge her less.

Don't let the provider quit work after darkness. One of the main complaints we had was the materials left in the yard that could have caused problems with our new puppies. Don't assume that when calling the office or when emailing a salesman that your concerns/complaints are known to the owner. Be persistent in calling or stopping by the office until you can get a reasonable explanation or agree to having the provider return to finish the work/project or problems that arose after the job was completed. Let the contractor deal with the insurance company (again our work was storm-related) once you have an understanding of the issues expressed by the contractor. Contractor finished all work on January 31, 2013 but we did not get all issues resolved until they had an electrician come by on January 11, 2014. Although there were some issues, and at the time we called for an estimate and decided to use this contractor, I don't recall that they were Angie's List members. We would most likely use these folks again and would recommend them since they are local.
Description of Work: Contractor: Removed old roofing, repaired a small section of plywood under the roofing and installed all new roofing. Removed damaged roofing vents and replaced with new vents. Removed damaged guttering and replaced with new guttering. Removed all old siding and installed new siding. Homeowners: Picked up nails, roofing and siding material for several weeks after the job was done. Had to semi-religiously call the vendor to get things fixed. Things slid somewhat with homeowners in part due to surgery and work schedule.

The people who run this company were very fast to give me an estimate, and I liked them more than the other 3 companies I got estimates from - which is on top of the fact that SPC had the best price. Thye were able to get my new windows in quicker than the other companies, and were very easy to work with on setting up the install date. I liked everyone I met during this job, from the man who sold me the windows to the two men who installed them. They were professional and very nice, and very competent. Their great customer service sold me on this company, so I have now gotten an estimate from them on re-doing my bathroom. I would recommend SPC to anyone with the highest marks.

Jim from SPC came out and gave us an estimate on a new shower in our third bathroom downstairs . We had discovered some leaks from the old tile shower but did not know how bad it was till Jim started tearing out the wall and showed us the 2X4's had rotted. We recieved estimates from 3 other companies but decided that SPC and Jim was our best value and called to let them know. They ordered our shower pattern within 4 weeks had started the project. Jim not only was the sales man but the installer also which was a plus for us. We love our new shower and have now decided to remodel the entire bathroom. I would recommend SPC to all of my friends.

Jim responded promptly for an in-home quote and as he was the person doing the actual work, he was very knowldegeable and extremely helpful in solving small bathroom remodeling problems. His craftsmanship was beyond excellent and he was most attentive to the little details which provided a wonderful finished job.
Description of Work: This company also goes by the name of Bath Specialities and they were very professional and competitively . Jim Griffith removed the 60 year old bath tub and plaster bath enclosure walls (taking every thing to the wall studs. He relined the walls with insulation, re-plumbed the faucets to accept one outlet (from the old two water sources); particially removed one stud to allow for an in-wall shelf (which the competitors said they couldn't do);installed the new acrylic walls and trim; installed the shower base and slide doors and then caulked everything. Then he installed new vinyl flooring and wood floor trim. Meanwhile he kept a window fan going which drew the dust outside the home. He also had walkway covers so the other rooms in the house were not tracked up with the bath dust.

The owner, Richard Wilson came out to give the initial estimate. He looked at what we had and measured. My husband and I both told him that we were concerned that his solution to construct this steel enclosure would be too heavy for our wooden deck to support. He assured us that we had nothing to worry about. The deck would be fine and the added weight would not be a problem. We took him at his word and gave him the o.k. One year later, we notice that the windows were becoming hard to lock. So I called him out to see what was going on. His men made an adjustment to the windows and everything was good. Second year, same thing, windows could not be locked they made an adjustment and everything was good. Finally, this year the windows were really out of alignment. They came back and said WOW, these windows have really dropped. We don't know what's going on. You have a problem in your soil beneath the deck. They told me that my soil had moved and the deck was moving causing the porch to shift. Both me and my husband felt that it was because the sunroom was too heavy for the deck and told Richard how we felt. He said no way. He suggested someone to call and get an estimate to fix. But he was not going to take care of it. We did get it fixed. It cost $400.00 and we were told the soil did not move. The weight of the building on the wooden deck was the reason for the problem. I think Richard Wilson will tell you anything to sell a product.
Description of Work: Replaced an existing screened-in porch with a steel enclosure having sliding glass windows and bottom glass transoms. This was put on top of an existing wooden deck.

The enclosure was constructed of Aluminum and Vinyl Components not steel. I am sure Ms [removed member name] made that error innocently. We built her enclosure in 2005. She felt good enough to have us work for her again on her father's home in 2008. We built her enclosure the same we have built 1000’s of enclosures, which meet or exceed all local building codes. The soil around the supports of her enclosure did pull away. And, with further investigation one will find that contractors are not responsible for changing soil conditions. In fact, there is an entire industry of contractors who specialize in repairing foundations due to changing soil conditions. If you will read the next review by Ms [removed member name] (please read my response as well) you will notice that the dates are the same. I believe both these reviews were triggered by a disagreement we had while working on her father's house. Ms [removed member name] was upset and used Angie’s List to vent her anger. SPC Home Improvement and I, as the contractor, have done millions of dollars of sunrooms, and have always conducted ourselves (myself) as professional with respect for ALL my customers. This is the only negative comment we have anywhere. We carry an A+ Accredited rating by the BBB.

There were some delays in the actual start of the job. The workers were a great bunch of men. However there was a problem regarding the way they worked around an existing problem relating to the drip edge. I called the owner Richard Wilson and spoke with him twice regarding my concerns. The second phone call resulted in him loosing his temper. He raised his voice and used profanity saying "my men did not do one GOD *EXPLICIT* thing wrong!! It literally unnerved me. I have never been treated or talked to like this from anyone in my dealings with contractors or business owners. He was very scary.

[Member Name] was in charge of having her father’s house covered with vinyl siding. [Member Name] solicited other prices from competing contractors. This fact alone should address whether I was too high or not. The project was going as expected when her next door neighbor told her we were not doing the eve areas correctly. I disagreed. I have done millions of dollars of siding, and we handled her father’s house well within industry standards and met all local building practices. [Member Name] demanded we change the work we had done and do it according to the way the neighbor wished it done. I asked her to pay extra for the extra work she was requesting, because there was nothing wrong. She refused. I was upset. However, I never yelled, I never cursed, but, I let her know I wasn’t happy about losing 3 days and a great deal of material because her neighbor thought it was wasn’t the way it should be done. I felt I had no choice but instruct my men to change the area to meet [Member Name] wishes. And, they did. [Member Name] knew I was not happy. It put a strain on our relationship. Again, I reiterate, I did not yell, nor, did I use any profanity whatsoever. A few days passed, and [Member Name] then asked me to for an aluminum awning over her Dad’s back door. Normally, a door awning of that style and size costs $500.00 for the material and labor. I explained to [Member Name] I would reduce the price to $350.00 since our men were already on the job. She got very, very angry. In retrospect, I now feel she thought I was overcharging her because of the eve issue; or, she felt I would have installed it for nothing if that issue hadn’t come up. I did not put $350.00 extra into our original bid and any additional material and labor should have been handled as an “add-on”. The only two negative reviews I have were submitted by [Member Name]. They were both submitted on the same day. I feel this was because [Member Name] used Angie’s List to vent her anger and frustration because of a legitimate difference in opinions. I never cursed. I never yelled. I was firm in my statements and opinions. I respect ALL my customers. I have an A+ Rating with the BBB.
