Jerry is a very nice guy. He seems to really like what he does, but the quality of the work is where things go down hill. The job was supposed to take 4 to 5 days. He and his guys (both are son in-laws from what I recall) would show up on time but always be in a hurry to leave by 2 or 3pm. Granted, I live fairly far from where they do; but that was known prior to taking the job. They cost themselves a great deal of extra work by doing things out of order and not doing it correctly the first time around. When refinishing a stair case, you really shouldn't paint the spindles before you strip, sand, and stain the rest of it. The painting of the wall and trim looked great. That stair well was a literal nightmare though. First, they sprayed the spindles on day 1 (bad move). Then, they laid on a thick layer of stripping get which dripped everywhere (including my carpet). What do you think that gel did to those newly painted spindles? Yep, stripped the paint right off and gooped it all up wherever it touched. Then, they sanded and scraped the original clear coat off the railing and treads...using everything from scrapers to wire brushes...then stained right over the wood without cleaning any of the debris off first. I thought I was going to have heart failure when I came home that day. There were huge scratch marks all in the wood from them not "sanding" with the grain and using wire brushes..and there was gunk from the scraping all mixed in to the stain. I called Jerry and went "off". He came back the next day and spent a whole day re-sanding (properly) the treads and railing. When the stain went on again...it looked great. I told him not to apply the polly top-coat until every bit of debris from sanding was off the treads..so, his guys started hand (re) painting the spindles. Now...my assumption was that they were going to sand down the peeled and gooped up paint on the spindles caused from the stripping gel...uh, no. They just started painting right over it. Again, I went "off" on them. I literally had to go behind them and start scraping paint where it looked like CRAP because his guys didn't want to spend the time it was going to take to do the job right. I called Jerry again...on the night of the 8th day and told him they had until the end of the next day to fix it and get it all done; or we were calling it quits. They came back the next day and stayed late to get everything done...not "right"..but acceptable enough for me to say "good enough". He has one son in-law that is NOT doing him any favors by working for him...he SUCKS at trim/detail work....huge drips of paint that Jerry had to keep going back and redoing. Honestly, I would never call them back again...period.
