I was curious what he put in my mailbox, and went to get it. He saw me and came back. I did not want to be solicited by him and walked away. He called me many bad names and asked if I was picking a fight. I stepped into the street and got his plate #. He was a very upset old man. I would never do business with him.
Description of Work: They put a flyer in my mailbox. Later, he started calling me bad names.

Response from Gronowski Construction LLC
Hello, My name is David Gronowski and I am the owner of Gronowski Construction,LLC. I am a 45 yr old, college educated family man with a wife and 2 boys, one of which is an Eagle Scout. It is true that I was passing out my company brochures into the wooden "paper box" that is placed under the actual mailboxes in the fishers area yesterday although the above event happened NOTHING like the above resident stated in his review. I'd like to take this time to address this event as it is very vivid in my head since this happened one day ago. First, the complaint reads" I was curious what he put in my mailbox and went to get it. He saw me and came back." I was trying to solicit some possible new business in the neighborhood so why in the world would I go back and confront a homeowner in a negative way without being seriously provoked? Does that make sense to anybody reading this? This is EXACTLY how this went down. I was putting my information in the wooden boxes that are placed under the actual "mailbox" going from one house to the next reaching out from my drivers side window. I went down one side of the street and turned around and went down the opposite side of the street. As i was approaching the complainant's home where I had just dropped my brochure, he was at his mailbox getting his mail and the stuff in the wooden box. He then turned around a looked directly at me, held my brochure up and aggressively threw it to the ground. Of coarse I stopped and I asked him if there was a problem and that I'd gladly take it back from him because they are not cheap to have produced. He then started walking down his driveway toward my truck and stated "you "blanks" need to stop stuffing our mailboxes with all this "crap"! Nobody wants it" I then stated to him that it was NOT placed in his mailbox but in the wooden box underneath and that was what they were for. If he didn't want flyers placed in there, close it up or take it down. I know some of you may feel the same way this man does and thats fine. Many folks DO like getting things in there. After that, there were expletives exchanged back and forth by both of us. I never got out of my truck and even waited for him to get a clear picture of my license plate because he was in the street trying to take the picture. I did nothing wrong and had no problem with him taking the picture although the brochure he threw on the ground and had since blew over into his next door neighbor's yard, had all my information on it! The bottom line folks is that I am a self employed contractor and work very hard to give my clients the best product and service that I can. I'm out here trying to earn a decent living like every other hard working American. I have college to pay for my kids and a mortgage, Visa, Truck payment like most people. Please don't let one mean, unhappy individual influence any thought you may have on our company! Have a great Spring!

We started the process in mid-January, obtaining bids. Due to my husband & I working full time jobs, it was difficult to quickly get the process turned around as we were meeting with these contractors at night & waiting to get bids. We hired Gronowski Construction at the end of March to do the project. Initially we had received bids from 4 contractors, but knew that GC had done some work for other people in our neighborhood & came highly recommended from them, so we hired him for the job. Dave, the owner, was quick with his bid, but apparently didn't like to wait or respect us for wanting to see what other contractors had to offer. When we narrowed it down to 2 contractors, the night we chose GC for the job & told the other contractor 'no thanks', we received an email from GC stating that "Due to the slowness of our decision making process, I am formally withdrawing my bid". We contacted him & he said that he had a lot of other bids coming in and was just "giving us an easy way out" but ending up taking the job. Even with that, we still felt he was the right choice. That should have been our first indication that this project was about to go VERY wrong. Construction started the first week of April. The work appeared to go smooth at the start, but there was not much done each day.The only other people I ever saw on site were the electrician and the mason (who did the stonework on the stair wall) until drywallers came in. I'm not saying there wasn't one, but I never saw or heard of a plumber being subbed for the ejector pit and plumbing work. Here are some highlights from our time with Mr. Gronowski during the course of the project: *Claimed that no permits were needed for this particular project (come to find out that there WERE) and when asked about us getting an inspection before the final payment his response was ?No one has ever asked to inspect my work? and appeared to be insulted * Multiple days that we would arrive home and find door unlocked, despite a reminder note placed to remind them to lock up. One day the door wasn't even latched. Another day, the basement window was left open. Thank goodness we found it before the storms came through that night or an animal climbed in. During a meeting with Dave, we mentioned AGAIN the window and door locking issue and his response was "Well, I guess we both make mistakes" referring to the day when my husband accidentally set our house alarm when he left in the morning for work. Unprofessional. This is MY house...treat it with some respect. * Most days, it seemed like work began after 10:00, though we were told it would start around 8:45. I would notice on days I was home, work would end around 12 or 1:30. Most days he wasn't even on site, which meant that he was giving our key to the subs, which I don't feel is appropriate. How do we know that key wasn't copied? On the last night we dealt with GC, our key was missing and when asked, he did not know where it was. Luckily we found it on the front porch. * About midpoint through the project, my husband received a text around noon while he was at work from GC that we had locked the storm door and the electrician couldn't get in to work. My husband was in a meeting and when he replied about 10 mins later, GC responded saying a day's work was lost because electrician was on another job and he needed another payment (though minimal work was even completed at this point). A phone conference ensued where we discussed how disappointed we were with the way things unfolded that day. At this point I hoped things would get better. * There was constant talk of how he was losing money because of subs or adjustments to the estimate in an unprofessional manner. * We have discovered from having other trades come in to bid on the completion of the project that the plumbing was installed incorrectly: The vent was improperly installed and will cost approx $1500 to have done to code. The ejector pit is not sealed, needs more concrete to finish. The water lines were installed too low for pedestal sink. Again, he may have subbed out the plumbing. I sure hope so because I never saw a plumber on site and GC is NOT licensed to do plumbing work, nor is he a registered contractor with the town of Fishers, which is required. * He left the drain pipe exposed leading from the bathroom through our closet under the stairs and when asked if he could please frame it in for drywall, he stated it was a lot of work and it was ok if we did it ourselves as we "seem pretty handy". Unacceptable. My husband completed this in 30 minutes one night. * Final straw after the fact was when I was cleaning our half bathroom that the subs and GC used while they were in the house and when I was vacuuming the floor, I found POOP smeared on the wall next to the toilet. This is how you treat someone's home?? COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE AND DISRESPECTFUL. And if it was your subs, that doesn't speak highly of the people you employ, nor does it reflect on you in a positive manner!! In addition, some of the subs looked like they were sprung from prison! I couldn't decide if I was glad I was at home while they were in my house or scared that I was at home by myself while they were in the house! The drywall was installed and finished, ceiling stomped by the first week of May. This was the point where we received an email asking for $1700 more on top of the final payment to finish the project with no detail. When we went through the hiring process, I expressed a concern that we would end up paying more than the final payment was estimated. He basically swore that wouldn't happen, that if his estimates are wrong based on the work to be completed that was his fault and we would not be asked to pay additional money unless something changed. In this situation, nothing changed that would require more money. Items were removed, never added. And what little things that were added were adjusted for in the final proposal signed on April 19th. Quick math would show that he was asking for a little more than 10% of the estimated cost! Any smart consumer would never agree without justification. When we sent him an email and asked him to please justify the need for additional funding before we would be willing to pay it, this is what we received (shortened for allowance): ?Well, it seems that we are at an impass. I knew from day one that this was going to happen from the first days dealing with you. Most people can plan a new 10,000 sq ft custom home in the time it took you to figure out what the heck you wanted in your 800 sq ft basement. You ALWAYS get what you pay for! Being cheap never works out in the end! First, you don't change the contracts after you give a deposit (should note here we never signed anything that said ?contract?. It said ?Proposal?). I should have walked at that time and kept your deposit! 2nd, you don't contact MY subs EVER! (assuming he is referring to electrician, which he ok'd).I'm running the job, not you! There were many extras that I did that was not on the contract that were "unforeseen" extra costs such as 1) sub panel from garage, 2) MANY extra outlet boxes and switches 3) lights over the half wall, etc. (the subpanel from the garage would count as ?complete electrical to code?, we never decided on the number of outlet boxes and switches but have them spaced to code as appropriate, and the lights over the half wall were included in the 21 recessed lights in the estimate of which we only have 20) I was going to make money on the granite and the glass shelving area but I decided to let you eliminate those because they were at the final trim stage and I knew you would be a pain in the a** & I wouldn't get out of there till June! (see above re: his discontent with taking on these projects). I just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. (Regarding the cabinets:)You basically STOLE $1050 right out of my pocket and I should have never let you out of that but just like the first go around, you brought that up right before a big payment was due and I couldn't afford to hassle with you for my money! In other words, I agreed to that "under duress" as my attorney put it. The shelving unit is another thing we disagree on.You know very well what we were talking about concerning that because you couldn't decide weather you wanted drywall on the one side or not.I find it very interesting that you came up with a drawing of what you wanted right after it was framed. I also saw the design book on your table which I'm sure you copied the plan from. You didn't know what the heck you wanted there but saw the drawing in the book afterward and said "hey, I'll jew Dave into building this" The problem is Cheap people live their lives this way and don't even know that they're doing this. It just comes natural to want something for nothing and beat people down till they get what they want! That being said, I WILL NOT be finishing your project. It's your baby now cause I'm done! Do not contact me anymore on this issue unless it's through your attorney!? This was on May 10th. Project poorly finished and incomplete and based on the bids that we have received to finish what was left to be done, it will cost approx $6000 more to complete the work. This is when I feel sorry for all the contractors that are honest and hard-working, because NONE of them will EVER get our business because of this incident. If I performed this poorly at my job or treated people this unprofessionally in my line of work, I would not only be terminated, but would lose my license to practice. I can only hope others will see and hear this story and prevent the same thing from happening to them or prevent this sorry excuse of a contractor from ever getting work in this city!!
Description of Work: Our basement was partially framed by the previous owner and some recessed lighting was installed. In addition, the utility closet with water heater and sump pump was framed and dry walled. We hired Gronowski Construction for the following work INITIALLY (changes were made during the process): --Complete finishing of 900 Sq. ft. basement --Framing of outside & partition walls --Complete electrical to code, cable outlets, florescent lights in unfinished area, 21 recessed can lights --Insulation, finished drywall, textured ceilings, 4 panel hollow cored doors, colonial base & casing matching existing home trim. --Finished bathroom matching existing upstairs. Includes tile flooring, toilet, vanity lighting, ejector pit pluming and pump. (allowance in estimate for toilet, vanity, sink, lighting & fixtures) --Bar per discussion & pics with additional cost for granite countertop. Additional granite on top of half wall by bar --Stone on stair wall --Bookshelves in reading area half wall --Fireplace nook cabinet w/glass shelves --Glass door on wine closet --Painting of all trim and priming of walls (final wall color painting to be completed by us) During the process, due to budget constraints and comparison shopping, we decided to do more work ourselves to be more cost effective, leading to changes to the initial proposal that was agreed upon and signed upon by BOTH parties . Most of the changes were due to GC stating that they didn't want to do a specific part of the project due to estimated loss/lack of profit, or being uncomfortable installing certain aspects of the project (tile and granite). On April 19th, my husband drew up an amended contract that included all changes and additional charges and adjustments that both parties signed and dated. The changes include the following: AMENDMENTS TO ESTIMATE/PROPOSAL : --Removing Fireplace nook cabinet w/glass shelves (changed to a standard closet with door with a cost adjustment and addition for closet door and framing) --Excluding tile flooring installation from bathroom (due to contractor stating that he was not comfortable installing the type of tile that was chosen and us finding the product from an outside source that provided their own installer) --Excluding granite countertops (due to contractor stating he did not want to be liable for transportation and installation of the granite, nor could find the type of granite that we wanted without a significant cost loss to him) --Include stonework on columns (in lieu of square footage adjustment) *** This was supposed to be in the original proposal. Plus, we were initially charged for 900 sq ft of finishing when actually it was only roughly 740 sq ft of finishing because he never took actual measurements of the space. When we asked him to adjust the bid for the change in square footage once we figured this out, his response was "That's what you told me it was, so I went with it." Therefore, instead of making the change to original document, it was agreed upon that a fair solution would be to include the above stonework that was accidentally left out of the original proposal at no cost, but this was never completed. .--Bookshelves to be built per customer provided design (ready for prime/painting to be completed by customer) ***This is a WHOLE other story--see below!! --Excluding allowance for purchase of bathroom items (he let us purchase the items ourselves so we could use our credit card and obtain points) --Removing the bar cabinets and installation : He quoted us $3000 for cabinets for a bar (no sink). Through shopping around, we found that the cabinets were only approx $1900. He would not budge on his price, which meant he had $1100 built in for installation and profit which is ABSURD. When we tried to take the cabinets on ourselves, he became angry that we were still getting quotes. He said that if we wanted to take them out of the estimate, we would have to pay a change fee. He told us that $500 was what it would take, which we both agreed to. $500 for NOTHING. He had not ordered any materials whatsoever for these cabinets. Good thing we were going to save so much money because we agreed just to shut him up. ( However, this seems to be the basis for what is about to unfold.....) Now, he never FINISHED any of the work, nor did he complete the project....Within the items of the initial and amended proposal, I will bold the items actually COMPLETED...... --Complete finishing of 900 Sq. ft. basement -- Framing of outside & partition walls --Complete electrical to code, cable outlets, florescent lights in unfinished area, 21 recessed can lights: Not completed--low voltage lights not installed or working, installed incorrectly in one area, 2 initially placed in wrong location. When the recessed lighting was installed, there was no approval from us on placement of the low voltage lights in the media room. Two were placed in the wrong location. When asked to move them, he said we would have to pay the electrician for labor and stated it was ok that we negotiate that price with him. The electrician wanted $75 to move the lights even though we never approved the location! But we agreed to just get it done....In addition, a new breaker box was wired from our garage to our basement (and poorly done also) and this was always discussed, but apparently left out of the estimate. GC stated he would do it even though it should cost "about $2000" to do and repeatedly brought this up during the project. Hey, not in the estimate, not my problem. After the fact, we hired a different electrician to complete the work who found wires loose behind the walls not connected to anything, 2 walls with no power source, and incorrect wiring into the breaker box and another one had to be installed at that time. --Insulation, finished drywall, textured ceilings, 4 panel hollow cored doors, colonial base & casing matching existing home trim. --Finished bathroom matching existing upstairs. Includes toilet, vanity lighting, ejector pit plumbing and pump. (allowance in estimate for toilet, vanity, sink, lighting & fixtures) --Stone on stair wall (poor quality of installation, will need to be grouted to be completed and look appropriate): The day the mason completed the stonework, we came home to find a stone not attached to the wall and a lot of gapping between the stones. When we approached Dave about it, his response was that HE touched the stone before it was dry and the gapping was supposed to be there (looked BAD). When we asked about being able to get it fixed, he just complained that the mason charged him $100 more for scaffolding because they weren't aware it was on a staircase (why is that MY problem or fault?) and he didn't have enough profit built into the wall to cover that. Eventually the mason did out to reattach the stone, but didn't fix the gapping, ironically the day before Dave quit the project. Therefore, the wall is not completed. --Stonework on columns --Bookshelves in reading area half wall STORY: --- The saga of the bookshelf: This was supposed to be a built-in see through book shelf that would reach between a column and the wall to "split" 2 rooms in the basement. I had sent GC pics from Pinterest of what we were looking for and he bid it at $600. On my day off, he calls me down to the basement to show me a 2x4 frame of the "bookshelf" with an open square in the middle and asked me if that was ok. I should preface that I know NOTHING about woodwork and construction. I texted a pic to my husband who was pretty irate as anyone knows that a "built-in" does not consist of drywall and 2x4 framing, especially not worth $600! We drew up another sketch of what we wanted and met with GC where he points to me and said "SHE told me it was ok, but now you are pleading ignorance?" At the end of the meeting, he agreed to build what we wanted (what we had wanted this ENTIRE TIME!) but it was going to be "a lot of work" and because he would "be at a loss" on this, he would not paint it. --Fireplace nook closet with door --Glass door on wine closet --Painting of all trim and priming of walls (final wall color painting to be completed by us) ........before walking off the project on May 10 with 90% of our money !!!!

Response from Gronowski Construction LLC
It is very unfortunate that his complaint has been filed by one of my customers. I take much pride in meeting the needs of my clients and making sure each and every one of them is happy and completely satisfied. Ironically, the entire five page fictional novel that the member wrote above comes second hand from her husband in which 95% of the communication was done with him when she wasn’t even present! I find it interesting that she was the author of this complaint of half-truths, exaggerations and outright LIES concerning this project! I take great offense to her negative labeling of me, me workers and my subcontractors. This couple has been the worst I have ever had to deal with in my entire 16 years in business. I only wish there was a place on this website to list unethical, nightmare clients so that my fellow contractors could see who “NOT” to work for! As the member did accurately state in her writings, I came, “HIGHLY RECOMMENDED” from some of her neighbors whom I’ve worked for in the past. Also, looking at my track record of reviews on Angie’s List, I have received nothing but straight “A” marks from my clients. I would be happy to give referrals of former and existing customers to anyone who asks!

Gronowski Construction owner "David Gronowski" was on site at our home during the entire process. He and 1 of his workmen removed our old carpet and installed a beautiful hardwood floor in our living room and dining room. The wood was called Canarywood which is a Brazilian exotic type wood. The whole project took 3 1/2 days to complete. They were very professional, on time, cleaned up after themselves each evening, and finished ahead of schedule. The price included the wood and labor to do the job. When it was all finished, the floor was "spectacular". We love our new flooring and would highly recommend Gronowski Construction to anyone of our friends/neighbors for any type of remodeling job. to place each piece
Description of Work: We had Gronowski Construction install hardwood flooring in our living and dining rooms. They had to remove the old carpet first, then lay out several pieces of the canarywood at a time to cut and place each piece in just the right spot because this wood is all different colors and sizes. It's like putting a jigsaw puzzle together.

I called a few people off Angie's List and contacted some from from the home how about finishing my unfinished basement room. Select him based on customer reviews, after having talked with the responders, and comparing prices. One price was lower, but reviews on Angie's List for that bidder were mixed so I went with this company. Waited a few weeks to get started and then work proceded well over a little less than two week period. He was reliable and was willing to change a few things as we got into the project. Work was mostly done by him and one helper. Ceiling work was subcontracted but went well for me. I felt he was concerned about doing a good job for me and that is what I got. I would call him again for any similar projects.
Description of Work: finished basement room with panelling, put in lighting, ran electrical, ran in-wall speaker wiring, put in ceiling and bulkheads over ductwork, small amount of painting

They came right out to inspect our current old deck, made some notes, and then submitted a proposal. WE accepted and within 5 days they were back at our home starting the work. We had to put down 1/2 of the $11,000 by the first day of construction. The total project took about 5 days (we had good weather). They were very professional, cleaned up the construction area each day. On the evening of the 5th day, we had a beautiful new deck both on our lower level walk-out area and on our upper level off the kitchen. They had some extra lumber that they didn't use so they returned it and gave us the credit toward the balance of the bill. We were very pleased with the entire experience.
Description of Work: We had this company come to our home to tear down and rebuild a new double deck.

Their work was done the proper way, and their prices were very good. They were dependable, on time, professional, and courteous. The lattice work was of good quality and workmanship, and had the correct support. I will continue to use their services.
Description of Work: They constructed a pergola for me after another company had botched a repair. Also built a very well done lattice wall for another part of my deck.
