Description of Work: We received bids from 4 fence companies, and while Blue's Fence and Green Star were even on the estimate, we went with Green Star because it is a small business owned by a couple who lives in Lafayette. We are also self-employed and prefer to support such businesses when we can. Overall, our privacy fence looks great! Mark did not charge us for the wider gate we needed and made it 5 ft. instead of the 54 in. we had requested, which is even better. Mark's workers were very friendly and came at 9:00 instead of 7 because we are late sleepers. A tree was in the back corner of our property, blocking the property line where the fence should be. Mark and his two workers cut down the tree, cleaned up the leaves and logs, and disposed of it. From the bid, Mark did not charge us for taking the tree down. | |Even though we are satisfied overall with Green Star's fence, the project was not free of issues. And most of our B ratings would be B-, verging on C+. |When Mark first came to write up an estimate for a privacy fence, we requested that he place the bottoms of the planks 1-2 in. underground to discourage animal life from entering (we are surrounded by woods). Even though he said he would do this--no problem--his workers did not, and when I approached him about it as they finished the job, he said that no, he doesn't do anything like that because in time the wood would rot. He either didn't listen at the time of the estimate or he said he could do this in order to get the job. |We also wanted the better side of the planks to face our yard because our neighbor's fence's better side faces our yard. Mark does not routinely ask which side the customer wants facing inside because most everyone wants to show the better side outward so the neighbors see it. Mark also did not spend much time onsite during the first few days, which concerned us. So, if you use Green Star, go over every preference carefully upfront. Put it in writing, and sign off on it within the estimate's job description before work begins. We also should have checked with the workers the first day after several hours to make sure they are putting up the planks the way you want them to. |When the job was done, Mark's wife called within 90 minutes of the workers leaving, and wanted to come over right away to get the payment. When she did, she did not introduce herself--she actually did not say anything, except as she noted the check no. and date on the receipt. She did not ask about our satisfaction with the job, or mention that they would appreciate our rating them on Angie's List, or "boo." She took the check and left, which I found off-putting and unprofessional. Where is or who does their customer service follow-up, if it's not the business half of the partnership? | |The check was also immediately cashed, so they must have had some customers stiff them. |
