They have been doing our service for years. They do it spring and fall. They?re probably due any time to come out and do a spring checkup. I think it was like $70. They showed up on time. They seemed to do a competent job. Our furnace is getting older, but they said for now it looks good. It?s on its last leg, but it?s still good. The service was good. I mean they?ve always given us good service and as far as pushing us to get a new furnace, I?ve never had any problem with.
Description of Work: The cleaned the furnace, tuned it up and calibrated the thermostat.

"Technician" arrived at 12:30, which was within 5 hours of my initial call. Unfortunately, he never even attempted to repair. Without ever actually removing or looking into the inducer, he declared it all locked up due to corrosion. He did not examine the exchanger yet declared it would be cracked or too thin to be safe. And I would also need a new pressure switch and secondary. All this with only removing one cover plate and never actually inspecting or testing a single part! He did empty some water out of the condensation tube. "Technician" used several high pressure tactics to convince me that I needed to purchase a new furnace. He said it would cost over $5,000 to repair my current unit, which is more than I paid for it when I purchased from same company on December 23, 2008, just 7 years ago! Said it would be at least 2 week back order on the secondary, and 8-10 weeks backorder for a new exchanger. Although the exchanger has a lifetime warranty, "Technician" said that the warranty would likely not be honored because I did not have a record of having the unit serviced annually. "Technician"wrote out a long list of potential new units to purchase, recommending that I really should purchase a stainless steel unit because of "all of the corrosion" in my current unit. And that I really ought to replace the AC unit as well because it would be nearly impossible or extremely costly to do so separately from the furnace. And I really should make a decision that day because they only had one appointment open in the next two weeks for installing. (It was 55 degrees F in my house at the time he was trying to make this sale.) When I informed "Technician" that I would NOT be making such a big decision on that day, he took back the written estimate sheet saying that was his only copy and so he couldn't leave it with me. I however took a picture of the estimate sheet with my phone and sent a copy to Brand with my complaint (see below.) $109 later, my furnace was not repaired (no attempt to repair was made), and several hours of my time wasted. Needless to say, I called a different HVAC company and they had my furnace up and running in less than 10 minutes. The inducer had locked up due to a few leaves and dead butterflies. It took only a screwdriver to remove the inducer, no other parts were needed and in fact, there was NOTHING defective in the furnace. This 2nd company didn't even charge me for this service - they considered it a 2nd opinion call. I contacted Brand to complain about their service and scam attempt. I sent the owner a detailed email message to their company account on October 21, but have yet to hear back from them.

Response from Brand Heating & Air Conditioning LLC
Dear Ms. [member name removed], Please let me start by saying the “Technician" you had in your home on the day in question is very passionate about what he does. He has been in the industry for 30+ years and he knows what he is doing. He may tell you what you don't want to hear because he cares about your safety and well being. We installed your furnace in 2008. Since then, you have made no attempt to professionally maintain your investment, which is required by the manufacturer in order to keep your warranties valid and keep it performing at maximum efficiency, as well as prevent breakdowns due to component failure. Paperwork was given to you at the time of the installation offering these services at a steep discount to you, and you chose not to take advantage of these services. It would be inconceivable to purchase a car, perform no maintenance and oil changes, have the engine fail due to lack of maintenance and have the manufacturer warranty the repairs. It is no different with a heating and air conditioning system. Therefore, you have no warranties, due to your own choosing. The “one plate” that was removed provides visual access to your heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is the primary component of the furnace that isolates the combustion gases from the breathable air. If there is a breach in the heat exchanger, products of combustion, including carbon monoxide, can leak into the breathable air, risking your health and possibly your life. That, and including the other components that were not working properly can, and do, lead to expensive repairs. Providing another comparison to the automotive industry, if you were to purchase your car piece-by-piece, it would cost 2-3 times the amount that the car costs purchasing it whole. So, taking into consideration the repairs that needed to be made now and the ones that will need to be made in near future, it becomes more cost effective to replace the entire furnace with one that you will have a warranty on, providing you have it properly maintained annually. As for what the other company told you, I can’t AND won’t speak for them. I have no idea what their experience or business practices are, and quite frankly, have no impact on the way I run my business. However, I will say this; getting another company to sign off and take on the liability of a safety concern such as yours, is generally nonexistent. One company will tell you that another doesn’t know what they’re doing, or are just trying to sell you something, yet will not take on the liability by putting their money, reputation and company on the line. We do that every day and if a technician is found to be lying to customers to sell them something they don’t need, they will not be working here. I apologize that your experience wasn’t as pleasant as we always hope for them to be. We do not like providing our customers “bad news” when we visit their homes. But when we need to do so, we try to provide the best solutions for you. Your lack of attention to maintaining your equipment for seven years is not a fault of ours, nor our responsibility. Our company and technicians truly care about our customers and take it very personally.

Description of Work: Checked (annual maintenance) a/c. Went okay. |Had a couple of scheduling glitches, but overall, okay. Have determined that we don't want to prepay for total services. It leaves us (the consumer) at an unfair disadvantage. The provider already has been paid, why would they want to expedite/complete the actual service? We also want to use another provider. We found one that has an A rating.

Got a confirmation call yesterday that the service technician with be at my house between 8 and 9 AM. No one showed so I called their office at 9:15. I asked where my technician was, the lady said he was running late, and he was at their office picking up things for my appointment. I asked why she hadn't called me to let me know they weren't going to be on time. She said she didn't know that he was running late. 30 minutes later the technician arrived. I didn't recognize him, so I asked him if he was new. He said yes, he was. He had just moved here from out of state. His previous job was a duct cleaner. He said he had only been working in his new job for a month and a half. He was getting on the job training as an HVAC technician. I watched as he worked on my furnace. He didn't act like he was comfortable or sure of what he was doing. He complained about his tools being old and not working well. He took some things apart to do testing, and lost one of the screws to put things back together. I asked him to replace the filter for my humidifier. After he took it apart, he said he didn't have that one in his truck. He said he'd got by their warehouse (a short drive from our house), pick one up and come right back to put it in. Ten minutes after he left, the receptionist called and said he wasn't coming back, but she was willing to bring the filter over. I told her that the technician said he would come back and put it in for me. She said she didn't know how to do that. I asked why the technician wasn't coming back, and she said he had to go to his next appointment. I told her to forget it!
Description of Work: Late, not qualified technician. Didn't do all the job.

We have used Brand Heating and Air for all our HVAC needs since we moved here in 1992. They service our furnace and air conditioner twice a year. When we have had a problem they have come out quickly and taken care of the issue. We moved to a new home in 2009 and had a new furnace and air conditioner installed. Last fall, 2012, during a routine maintenance check, they discovered that the heat exchanger was cracked on my 3 year old furnace. They ordered the part and replaced it as quickly as possible, keeping in touch to let me know what was happening because it took 3 days to get the part. The unit was still under warranty, so we didn't pay a thing! Our last service call was because mice had chewed the wiring on the air conditioner and the wiring was exposed (discovered by our pest control guy in December). They came right out and replaced the wiring. I recommend them for any work you need done. They are always prompt, courteous, and clean everything up.

My 87 yr old mother had moved to a retirement center, and so my brother and I were at her house doing some work needed to prepare the house for sale. We discovered she had no hot water. Because she had had Brand install the hot water heater in 2007, we called them for service. The tech relighted the pilot and charged $124.00. My brother told them it was not just that, but they said they would come back if that didn't fix it. Of course, it didn't. So the next day the tech says it is a "Flow regulator" that is separate from the water heater and it will be $400. My brother had to go back to Ohio where he lives, and I was going to be out of town for the next 10 days, so I told him to leave it and I would see what to do when I got back. My mother is not wealthy and couldn't throw $400 at this problem.I was only home 2 days when my mother had to go to the hospital, and so it was 2 more weeks before I could get back to Brand about the hot water. I called and asked to speak to the service manager. He was sick, and nobody else had the authority to tackle a problem. After I called twice more he finally called me, and he agreed to come look at the problem (3 days later). He said the valve could be removed as it was not required, and it would be one hour of labor or $100.00 at their going rate. I asked about other charges. He said no, no other charges. He said the office would call me on Monday to set up a time. On Monday no one had called by 10 AM, so I called them. I spoke to the scheduler and agreed on Wednesday morning. I added the specific comment that it could not be afternoon. She said no, it will be mid-morning probably around 10. When he arrived at 12:10, I said I have an appointment and cannot stay. I said I would pay him and he could lock up when he left. He said he would and the charge will be $176.00. Now I think that estimates are likely plus or minus 10%, but plus 76% is way out of estimate range. The manager, Mike, lied to me about the charge. The work was done, and there is hot water, but the price, punctuality and professional rate an F in my opinion. I would never call this company again.
Description of Work: The hot water heater was not working at my mother's house. The repair was to replace a flow regulator which is not part of the actual water heater. The water heater was replumbed to eliminate this valve.

Response from Brand Heating & Air Conditioning LLC
Our company was called out to this customers’ house because they had no hot water. Upon arrival, we found that the pilot light was out. We relit the pilot, started the water heater and checked the operation of the water heater to make sure that it was operating properly. The $124 charge was for our service fee, repair and inspection of the system for proper operation and safety. Everything was working properly when we left the home. We were called back out for a problem with an “anti-scald” valve that is totally independent of the water heater. The purpose of the valve is to mix cold water with the hot water to balance the temperature and prevent scalding. It is not required and is very rarely used in a residential application. The customer was presented with a price of $400 to replace the valve, which I agree is an expensive repair, but is also a cost that I do not control. I do not manufacture the valve. While talking with the customer, we presented another repair option, which was to just eliminate the valve all together. We told them that because we were just there yesterday, we would make the repair for the cost of labor only, which is $100/hr. The customer was told before we started the repair that the total cost would be $176, which they authorized. We did not make the repair and then tell them the cost would be $176. We were under the impression, from them, that we were providing a very cost effective solution at less than half of what replacing the valve would cost. Again, I’d like to highlight what we did for the customer from a service standpoint: (1) We did not charge a second service fee, which we were entitled to do because it was a separate issue from what we were out there the first time for. (2) We provided a solution that cost less than half of what the replacement of the valve cost. (3) We did not charge for materials to make the repair, we only charged labor. (4) They knew and authorized the cost of the repair before we made it. It was unfortunate that they had a second problem with the hot water in their mother’s home; however it was completely out of our control. We worked with them as far as the cost of repair and they actually paid less than if we did it all at the same time, while it actually cost us more to make multiple trips out. I understand the stress they are under with their mother getting sick and everything they have to deal with. I went through it first hand with my in-laws and it is not an easy or enviable position to be in. I feel that their response is unfair and wish they would reconsider the rating of the service they received from our company. They seemed satisfied when we left their home and did not call to let us know they were unhappy. I hope that the stress of what they’re under is what has led to this and not the actual service received, or at least please let us know what we could do to make them satisfied with our company.

They come once in the summer and once in the winter. They come in and do the maintenance. They do the furnace and air conditioner at the same time. They once said that the air conditioner’s Freon was leaking. It seemed unlikely that it was. I was not pleased with their service. I felt like they were trying to sell me unnecessary things. I have no intention of using them again.

Old water heater was at least 16 years old and making bubbling and thumping noises in the basement. Noticed small drip in April and began calling plumbers and other installers (including Sears), but all 4 estimates seemed rather expensive. These conversations educated me about the Bradford White brand. After this company -- originally recommended by a neighbor -- completed HVAC repair and A/C service in my home, I asked them for an water heater estimate. Their estimate was lower than the others for installing the Bradford White model I wanted, plus I was very impressed during my previous experience with their staff and service. My new gas water heater is more energy efficient and qualified for a $100 rebate from the gas company.

After 2 estimates from other HVAC firms, my neighbor recommended this company as locally owned and used by other members of his family. Brand's service & parts manager Dan McGlothlin took time to talk over options with me and won my confidence because he provided good information and a listening ear without a hard sell. He also structured the estimate so that I got the best possible price after joining their annual service plan and receiving a regular customer discount on the circuit board. Mike Latus, the technician who installed the circuit board and did the spring tuneup of my A/C unit, did the most thorough cleaning job I have *ever* seen on my 11+ year old outdoor A/C unit. He also explained each step of the cleaning and testing process to me. In the first decade of this unit's life, I used 2 different service firms -- a locally owned Lennox dealer who installed it and then another regionally owned company whose technicians' thoroughness and people skills varied widely. Example: One A/C tuneup was so fast outdoors that I didn't even have time to get out there and watch. I seriously doubt he did anything that compares with what I watched my Brand technician do. Totally impressed, I am now a loyal customer for as long as the people I have met are involved with the company. I also had a chance to meet the owner on another occasion.
