Zo Construction and Handyman

Jeff and crew came to each location, cleaned and repaired gutters on 5 units including an old Victorian two story house and a modern 4 bedroom home. Excellent customer service, professional, price was right and didn’t disturb my tenants.

So construction sent out a crew. They removed my fence, repaired the rotting wood and painted the entire fence. They then fixed two gates and cemented it back into the ground. It met standards and looked great - now the HOA President is using Zo. Makes me feel good about my property.

Jeff responded to my initial call on the same day. We scheduled the repair for 3 days later. He was on time, professional and personable, quickly and properly completed the repairs, and charged a fee $500 less than the previous contractor we had contacted. I would definitely call him again for contractor services.

It was a quick fix. The siding at the very top of the two story house had slid to one side creating a gap where a bird was pecking at the installation.

HORRIBLE, worst customer service I have ever experienced! Many instances of No Show / No Contact for 6 full weeks!! ! I DO NOT KNOW HOW THEY ARE STILLL IN BUSINESS...DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY! Jeff (owner) gave me an estimate informing me he could start work the following week. He seemed professional and trustworthy so I hired him immediately, especially since he was able to start sooner than the other estimates I had received! After picking paint colors things went bad. I was given 4 different start dates, with no show and no contact. I had to continuously contact him to find out status which was when I would be given a new date. Each time the same thing happened. After the second date with no show / no contact I asked that I stay informed if they were not able to show as scheduled which never happened. I was given numerous reasons (rain put them behind, scheduling problems, employee absence). Now I am not even getting call backs. I have stayed calm and tried to be understanding until now. This has really put me in a spot since now being late November it is going to be hard to get the work done since winter is upon us, I seriously do not know what happened...Angie List reviews were decent so thought I was safe to deal with this company.

Poor. He came out and gave a reasonable estimate and set up a time to come back and complete the work. We called the day before he was set to come out to confirm and never received a call back. Then on the day of he did not show up and did not return phone calls.

I have taken Zo Construction and Handyman off my speed dial. They never showed up for the 2nd appointment and never bothered to call. The owner said he was out of town and didn't know his handyman didn't show up. What kind of business doesn't check their voicemail. The owner finally called me and I set up another appointment. The owner showed up this time and tried to balance the fan but was unsuccessful. He set up a 3rd appointment for his handyman to come out and balance the fan. Again, the handyman didn't show up and didn't bother to call to tell me that he wasn't coming out. This time the excuse was that there was an illness in the family. I'm sorry that this was the case but they could have at least given me the courtesy to call and let me know they would be delayed or not going to come. The handyman never did get the fan balanced and I had to call someone else to do the job.

I now live out of state and can only return for brief periods of time. I needed someone to do some work on the house so I could rent it out in my absence, and I chose ZO. I chose poorly. Most of the work was shoddy (See photos). Work was done in a slipshod manner, with little regard to common sense. I asked him to do some drywall replacement in the ceiling of my master bath, but I returned to find parts of the exhaust fan missing as well as the glass cover for the light fixture. I have cabinets that are falling off of my ceiling because he apparently didn't think they needed to be mounted securely. I've got a big hole in the exterior of my house around the cheap exhaust for the in-line water heater he installed. For the painting I told him to match the color of the trim on the house, instead he took some other paint that I had used for parts of the deck and used that. I had to make him repaint with the right color. The landscaping he did is just atrocious. I've got a stump now in my front yard that neighborhood children are tripping and falling over. The landscaping bricks were just placed flat on the ground, and will fall over in due time. It's just ridiculous that anyone would leave such things in this state after being paid several thousand dollars to do the work. All the work was amateurish. If you hire Jeff, make sure you hold his nose to the grindstone. Don't pay him until the work is finished to the specification that you want or you will never see him again. He promised me he would come back and fix anything I was not satisfied with, however when I called him about fixing the work he did and actually finishing and/or doing some of the work I had actually paid him for I got nothing but runaround from him. For over a month he either didn't respond or made promises that he didn't keep. I wouldn't hire him again to take out my trash much less work on anything important. Can't follow simple instructions. Unprofessional, untrustworthy. Do not hire for anything, ever.

Wonderful! They were able to come out the same day. When they were supposed to be at my house the owner called to see if they had arrived. When they hadn't arrived yet he called them. They actually went next door by mistake so they showed up about 2 minutes after the owner called me. They put metal plates along the bottom of the wall where the mice were getting in and replaced the drywall. They did a great job moving the stove out and back in without scratching the floor or damaging the countertop. They used foam to fill in the hole in the furnace room. They replaced light bulbs in the ceiling lights and a filter in the refrigerator and balanced a ceiling fan which are things I am unable to do by myself. They were very neat and cleaned up after all the work was done. I was very impressed because Jesse knew exactly what needed to be done but he still read the instructions before replacing the filter in the refrigerator. Not many men will bother to do this. I felt their price was a little high but I wanted the mice problem solved right away and none of the other contractors I contacted could do the work right away. But in the end I wasn't sorry I chose them to come out. I was so pleased with their work that they are on my speed dial for future home repairs.

Overall it went well. They fixed the soffit in two areas. The owner was very quick and very neat.

Very quick, response time for quote was incrediable. Selected day, crew came in moved everything and did an outstanding job on the house. Colors are beautiful - lines are clean and when they left they cleaned up everything and gave me the color in case I need to match something. Very Reasonable price.

Zo clean 8 property gutters and replaced one of my gutters. Outastanding job - very reasonable.

Wonderful - hired a guy and he came in and removed the fence put poles in wrong and deserted me. Zo to the rescue: he came in removed the poles that were put in incorrectly and put up a brand new privacy fence. He was quick and the yard is beautiful. He did such a great job we asked to have him paint the shed. He matched our siding and painted it the exact same color. Just beautiful.

He was late coming here. He didn't bring proper supplies with him. He needed to return, he did not and he never called me back, despite repeated calls to him.

Input 3 different dates for person to complete work. Received no communication from zo. Tried calling but phone number went to voicemail.

Selected my availability for service. Didn't hear anything after a week of waiting. Called and didn't receive return call. Contacted Angie's list for assistance which they provided me. After I contacted Angie's List he did email me asking to make it up to me but I already made other arrangements to get my shingles installed.

Did not show or call the first or third appointments made, even with a reminder texted and call which was never answered or returned. The second appointment I believe he might have shown up. He called on his way, due to a family emergency on my end could not complete service. Sounded professional over the phone however. Work agreed to per phone, did not show up 2 out of 3 appointments made. Waited 3 hours at home for both appointments.

Zo did an excellent job with all of the repairs. I enjoyed working with them and would definitely hire them again.

Jeff came out immediately for the estimate, I had concerns about our gutters and covered porch out back his estimate for everything was very reasonable. I am also huge on customer service and Jeff delivered and more he even had his team hall away some branches we cut down at no extra charge the job was completed in a very timely manner! I have nothing but good things to say about this company! if you are looking for a handyman this company will deliver you will not be disappointed!!!

I got him off of Angie?s List. They did a lot of stuff and we got a lot done, but I had trouble getting the guy to come back and finish the job. I had to end up going to his boss. In the contracting business, everybody?s a sub. So, you get somebody, you think you hired somebody and somebody else shows up. You go, ?You?re not the guy I hired!? ?Oh, I work with so-and-so!? Then all of a sudden, they do sh*tty work then you can?t get a hold of them, because they know you don?t like their work. Then you end up going back to the guy you originally hired, if you can get a hold of him. ?Well, I didn?t do the work, I hired, another company handles all of that!? That kind of deal. I go, ?Well, I know but I didn?t hire another company, I hired you!? So, that?s kind of what happened. The owner of the company came over and had his girlfriend with him. I think they were going on a date. He came over, he got my nasty email on Angie?s List. That?s the good thing about Angie?s List! If you send some of these guys, use their call number or whatever. If there?s a problem, there?s a great likely hood you won?t ever hear from the guy. If you email them through Angie?s List, they tend to be on it. I got this under plaster repair because I had a leak from an upstairs bathroom. He?s not that far from where I live. I can?t remember what I paid them, but it was okay. I had a problem, some of their work was okay. It was okay. I?m grateful for what they did. Nobody else wanted to do it. I waited for a year for my nephew, the contractor to show up and he never showed up. Again, it?s one of those deals where sometimes you?re grateful to have somebody to even show up. There was a coupon on Angie?s List. I hired the guy from Angie?s List. He sent out a couple of contractors, a man and his son to do the work. I had no problem with that. When the works all done, they?re giving me the price break down. They went and bought materials and I?m writing them a check for the materials. Then they?re giving me a bill on the labor and I had printed out my coupon from Angie?s List, that this Zoe Construction had put on Angie?s List. So, the contractor?s looking at me, the guy who showed up and his son, ?We don?t know anything about this!? I said, ?Well, I?m telling you, I?m giving you the coupon from Angie?s List! I hired your company!? ?Well, I don?t really work for the company, I do work for him!? I said, Well okay, there?s a 10% coupon!? He goes, ?That wouldn?t apply to the materials!? I said, ?That?s fine, I understand that, because you bought the materials separately and I?m paying you for the materials separately!? That was their deal not mine. I said, ?It?s a 10% coupon, so whatever the labor was!? It was like $600 or $700. He said, ?Well, I don?t know?, and he kind of stood there and looked at me. I said, ?Call the guy who you work for or who owns the company and talk to him, because Angie?s List didn?t run this by accident. He had to call them and tell them to do it. So, I expect you to honor that!? He said, ?Well? we can never get a hold of the guy, maybe you can call him!? I thought that is weird as h*ll! As a customer, this should be kind of seamless to me. This isn?t like the Wizard of Oz, I shouldn?t have to go behind the curtain to see how the thing works! Any rate, I think they left a message for him and he ended up calling back while we were doing all of this, conversing. The man who owns the company also works as a school custodian, that?s kind of like his full-time job or school maintenance technician or something. He happened to grab the call and called back. He gave them the authority to take care of the coupon. I would have just paid them and then filed some sort of complaint with Angie?s List, saying they wouldn?t honor the coupon. Any rate, I got that taken care of. They are nice people and all, but they?re kind of typical of what you expect in the home improvement business, out of the shuck and jive routine. They got the work done. I didn?t think the plaster work was all that neat, it was okay, it was better than what was there. It?s better than having the ceiling fall in. They did what I would probably consider a ?C-? job or a ?B+? job on the plaster work. The work they did on my tub at one point when they walked out of here, I said, ?You?ve got like caulk and grout everywhere!? ?Well, wait until it dries and just take a damp sponge and wipe it off!? Well, it wasn?t that simple because they used silicone caulk and it didn?t just wipe off. I spent about 3 hours cutting through caulk and cleaning. There were some spots that they?d missed. I called them back 3 or 4 times and they were non-responsive. I ended up getting a hold of Mr. Zoe or whatever, the guy that owns the company. That?s when he came over with his girlfriend. He goes, ?Yea, that?s not a very neat job!? He said, ?Let me see if I can?t take care of that!? I got a razor blade for him and he & his girlfriend worked on my tub and cleaned it up. He was a nice guy and I think the fact that I had emailed him through Angie?s List, because when I emailed his workers, they wouldn?t respond. When I was texting them and leaving messages, they wouldn?t respond to me. Then when I got a hold of the owner, when I was trying to get a hold of him through regular texting, he wasn?t responsive. When I went through Angie?s List, he was Johnny on the spot calling me back. My house is 101 years old and I?ve gone through one contractor after another on different projects. This, what I have gone through is why a lot of houses in Irvington are falling apart, because other people have the same issues and they just give up. They wait until it?s a major deal. If you have a major repair and you are willing to spent $10,000 or $15,000, now all of a sudden people start taking notice. Now they want your business. For $500 jobs or $1,000 jobs, that kind of thing, it?s hard to find people to do anything. They just don?t want to show up. It?s more trouble than it?s worth for them. On professionalism, other people would have given him a ?D? or an ?F?. I?ll be generous on professionalism. I?ve had some really professional people. I don?t know. For that kind of contracting, they?re about average. If the owner of the company actually came out and took care of it, I would guess that I would use him again. Knowing that if I go through Angie?s List, I can get some resolution.

Jeff and his crew did excellent work. They are hard working, detail-oriented, and professional. They worked through the weekend to ensure the job was done completely and on-time. I would definitely hire Zo Construction again for painting and handyman work.
