Updike Bathroom Remodeling

It went very well. Rudy did all of the work himself, and did an excellent job. He was friendly, flexible, and knowledgeable. He incorporated the decorative elements I selected artfully, and even contacted a drywall man for us who repaired a leak in the downstairs ceiling that had been caused by the old shower.

The floor in my bathroom had rotted due to a leaking toilet and shower. They removed the old flooring and installed new flooring. Updike did a great job and explained what was necessary to do. They were very good about showing what had not been done to the bathroom.

Contracted estimation for job completion was 5-7 days. Start date was 3/22/10. Total completion on 4/13/10. We had to go out of town for 2 business days, but given that, the job took 3 weeks. All core work was done by one sub-contractor, while odds and ends were dealt with by Dan Updike himself and a couple of specialists. The shower door was installed by the manufacturer. This was our first remodeling experience. Given that, we still expected there to be problems but were not prepared for the amount of things that came up. The timeline was the least of our concerns. Demolition went fine and was timely. There was an issue with our home's construction and how a pipe laid in the shower foundation. This took extra time but appeared to have been done well. At one point, we were without hot water for two days due to some plumbing confusion. After we called in our own plumber, he discovered that a cartridge that is required to separate hot and cold water had not been installed in our shower. At that point the subcontractor took care of it. Due to some rushing at the end, several drywall issues needed to be fixed, which Dan took care of. But the most concerning issue was an electrical problem discovered while we were painting the bathroom. We touched the wall while it was still tacky and found it to be electrified. Dan brought in an electrician who quickly discovered that a drywall screw had penetrated the wiring. Again, it was taken care of. All in all, we love our new bathroom. But the experience itself makes us question any future remodeling. The tile shower is very beautiful. I was told on day one that the subcontractor was a "tile guy" and would need more time with electrical and plumbing. I did not realize that this could mean the kinds of mistakes that occurred. The bottom line is that Dan made sure things got fixed. Up to the point of the electrical mistake, I would have used them again. But the thought that this problem might not have been caught had my husband not touched the wall while it was tacky and had bare feet on a freshly mopped floor, we would never had caught it. This is scary to say the least.

Jason was on time. He found the wall had disintegrated and that there was mold to deal with. He performed the remediation on the first day, and then came back the next day to replace the wallboard, etc. He cleaned up very nicely.

Dan, the owner, responded quickly to the call and provided the estimate after coming to view the job. He presented several options of varying prices to accommodate our budget. He worked with the price to make it work. The job was completed while we were on spring break. It is beautiful.

Jeff was on time, worked around my wife's schedule - she a beautician & had to turn water off for short times. Laid canvas to keep floors clean - vacuumed each day.

The overall process went very smoothly Dan Updike is very easy to work with and gave us a lot of ideas. He said that the process from start to finish would take about a week and 1/2 and we were only off by a day. All of the repair and most of the replacement work was done by one person. He was very efficient and made sure everything was cleaned up before he left. The glass shower door and wall were installed by another company and they did a very nice job also.

Their prices were reasonable. I was very impressed with the workmanship and I am looking forward to working with them again.

Contacted Updike to do a bathroom remodel. They give an extensive phone interview, and it was determined that our project was not a good match for them. We were looking for an inexpensive bathroom remodel (prefabricated shower stall, vanity, vinyl floor, dry wall repair) as this is not a house we plan on staying in. They apparently do custom showers involving solid surface, tile or laminate that start out at $4000 and do not install prefabricated shower stalls (Menards, $380). I appreciate the honesty, and I understand that they need to qualify customers before making visits to homes. However, their website states that they do complete remodel projects to shower wall replacements making it sound as though they do everything from custom baths to minor projects, and that doesn't appear to be the case. If you're not looking for custom high end baths, then this probably isn't the contractor for you.

Updike remodeler, Jason, arrived on time and worked until he was finished. he was meticulous in the work he did with the result being a large comfortable shower that is visually pleasing but is also accommodating for an elderly person.

He stands by his word and is very conscientious. I think he is a very nice person. Rudy is a very good tile person and takes pride in his work. They really worked to please me. I got 3 estimates, and I thought his was the best.

We are very pleased with Updike and the excellent work that Jeff did.

On 5/27/09 Dan Updike came to my home with books to show what he could offer and give an estimate for the work. I called and asked for a proposal and contract after reserching on the web and going to bathroom remodeling stores to check their prices for the job. I signed the contract on 6/10/09 and the work began two weeks later and was done that day. There was a problem with the shower door. Dan came and found the problem and sent for a new part. The job was finished on 8/14/09. While waiting for the new part I was able to use my bathroom.

We were very pleased with his work, promptness and the way he daily cleaned up after himself. He was friendly but did not take up our time ore than necessary.

This was a wonderful experience. Updike made this process flow very well. Their attention to detail was excellent. Each member of their company was helpful, friendly and professional. The construction crew of Jason & Jay were the best and we felt very comfortable.

Competent, not "pushy", able to work with me, really heard what I wanted. Workmen were efficient, focused & did fine work.

Very long process to have bathroom remodeled. I am still not happy with some of the work, but short of ripping the tile out we are stuck.

On time each day & finished in less than time estimated. Good work, but left spots of dirt on carpet.

It was very good, they were very responsive, we had a short window. We tried to get an estimate as far as inspection response time. They were very good at getting us an estimate. I think my client went with them, but I'm not sure. Either way, I think they would have done a great job. They were very easy to talk to, always had an answer for questions when it came to solutions. They communicated with me, the buyer and the sellers of the home. They had a very competitive price.

Installer was on time, very professional & work well done. Cleaned job every day. Friendly & helpful.

Both installers for Updike were on time, courteous, clean and knowledgeable. Great customer service from beginning to end. I would use them again.
