Updike Bathroom Remodeling

Jeremy was outstanding. He was on time, courteous, and very skilled. He did an outstanding job in less time than we expected. We were extremely pleased with the process and result.

I decided to hold off on the remodeling because of the economy. They gave me the estimate by phone but I never had them perform any work.

From the first time I spoke with Dan Updike, I knew that he was going to be very easy to get along with. He was responsive to all our needs and helped us to make decisions that were right for us. He priced out each section of the plan so that we could make changes to any part of it, which we did as we went along. Working with Jeff Quack, our installer, was an absolute pleasure. He is highly professional, and clearly takes pride in the quality of his work. He was punctual; got to the job at the time he said he would arrive. He cleaned up every day before he left. His workmanship is meticulous. Every tile is perfectly matched. We trusted him to be in our home, unsupervised, while we were out. Overall we are extremely pleased with the outcome in both baths. We would definitely recommend Dan and his crew, and would use them again should the opportunity arise.

Everyone was very pleasant and professional to work with. It was a very good experience from the initial visit until the construction was completed.

Larger variation than expected from sample to product. Work was labor intensive and handled well by the worker.

Dan Updike was helpful, professional and polite throughout the planning and executing of the job. Jeff, who did the actual work, was punctual, and very hardworking. Once the job was started, they kept with it every day until completed. Everything was good but the brightness of the light bulb in the new fan. It is way too bright. Not able to replace.

Two other companies have told us that we should replace our entire shower to properly fix the leak in the strainer in the base of the stand up shower. Dan came over expecting to quote a full shower remodel, but quickly told me that we could, in fact, repair the bad strainer and be done with it for a fraction of the cost. We were first worried that they would not be able to fit me on the schedule since they had a bunch of big remodel jobs about to start, but soon after he left, the schedule opened up because of someone else's delay, so he put my small job on his schedule. Jason came over on Monday to attempt a 4-5 hour repair. He finished the job in about 3 hours, much quicker than I expected. I then had to finish some tile work before we could use the shower. After that all sealed and dried, the shower still leaked from the strainer. I called Dan and he came out to inspect it. He told me Jason could come back and fix it in a few days. I was concerned with having the same person who made the mistake come back out, but Dan insisted because it would teach a lesson. Jason came out and added more sealant. It has worked great ever since the second trip. The bill was higher than I expected: $550. I guess that pair for the 3 or 3.5 hours of labor on day one, some pvc piping, a new strainer, a 6 by 6 drywall piece, and loads of sealant. I hope I am not paying for the return trips. We never agreed on a set price to begin, but I was surprised with how much it was.

Dan Updike provided the quote and was punctual and very professional and accurate measuring out and discussing the project. Dan noted in his quote the shower enclosure would slightly overlap the existing window. I did not pursue the window issue or additional items not discussed for I felt it would only increase the cost of which I was not prepared to pay.

I was very pleased with their work. This was the second time that I used them, and I would use them again if I needed this type of work again. They were very professional. They worked with me and their price was reasonable. Their workman accidentally broke our toilet which was very old and had been in our home since the 1970's. They immediately fixed the toilet with one that was of higher quality, no questions asked.

Everything turned out well. We did have one small issue that they fixed with out charging.

Showed up on time for estimate and answered all of my questions. Did a very thorough job of explaining the company and the qualifications of the crew who would be working on my project. Offered great advice on what to do with the space and possible options for the bathroom renovation.

The job took about 2 times longer than estimated. It started pretty much on schedule and continued until done except when waiting on outside contractors to supply granite tops and the glass shower enclosure. The price was high for a small/medium bath considering that it did not include rewiring the bathroom to current electrical codes, the cost and installation of the granite counter tops, the 72 inch long double vanity, new toilet and new bathtub, towel racks, paper holder, handtowel holders and painting. The same person did almost all the work and provided good continuity. However, Dan Updike was only on the job site once until the very end of the project. If one of the homeowners had not been present daily, I would have been very uncomfortable with the lack of supervision. Dan Updike is NOT a bathroom designer. He expects the customer to have a rather detailed idea of what they want. Although we met with him several times before signing the contract, there was never a detailed plan of the work presented nor did the contract spell out all of the things which were discussed. We placed a lot of faith in him based upon Angies list recommendations. Dan is very reluctant to get building permits, even in areas which clearly require them such as the significant changes to the house main sewer and vent system. He told us that rewiring did not require a permit if the homeowner did the work which is NOT true in Indianapolis and threatened to put a stop on the job. Overall we were generally pleased with the outcome. The quality of the detailed finishing was not what we expected considering the price we paid. Updike's charge for the job was definitely on the high end considering that it didn't include $1000 for the granite, $2000 for the custom vanity, $400 for towel holders etc, $1500 electrical work, and painting and replacement of toilet and bathtub.`

Jason was always on time and went about his work in a very professional manner. Three days was the estimated time for the work to be finished. He was going to put the new flooring in on the 2nd day, but it had not been delivered yet. Jason had to finish the job on the 4th day which was no problem for me.

I had obtained 2 other bids, but although Updike's bid was higher, I felt more comfortable with the type and quality of supplies and fixtures that they recommended. Dan quickly understood what I wanted, and adapted the plan to make the project more affordable. The installer (Jeff) was meticulous, professional, and polite. Adjacent living and traffic areas to the bath were protected/covered as much as possible, and upon final inspection, minor changes were completed promptly.

Rudy, the installer, arrived on time. He removed damaged counter top and installed new one. He cleaned up well and the new counter top looks great.

Rudy did an excellent job from start to finish. We couldn't be more pleased.

The Updike worker was on time and reasonably priced and focused on his work. The wile was done well. We were not initially pleased with the subcontractor who installed the shower door but they worked with us to resolve the issues as best as they could. The subcontractor is the reason Updike did not receive an "A" rating.

Dan Updike gave us an estimate to replace our old shower and explianed in detail what work would be done. The job was completed within the estimated time frame. Jeff, our installer, was professional and his workmanship was excellent. He laid drop cloths and cleaned up the job site at the end of each day.The finished job was exactly what we expected. We are very satisfied with our new shower.

Great to work with from the initial contact. Worked with me on what I wanted. Offered ideas and alternatives. Worked with me to keep the current mud tile floor that I loved. Very knowledgable with products available. Did not pressure me into rushing into decisions. Able to get it done when scheduled. Highly recommend. Office staff and showroom staff great to work with.

He told me with the room this small, he didn't think it looked that bad and said he didn't think he could do anything to improve the situation. He no longer refinished bathtubs. He gave us a name of a provider to refinish the bath tub and someone to re-grout. We really appreciated his honesty.

Very good experience. Dan Updike was pleasant to talk with and offered very helpful information over the phone. Some companies with less integrity may have tried to take advantage of our situation, but Dan let us know that the temporary fix was actually very simple. Our problem was basically a plumbing issue and their company is really a bathroom remodeler, so we weren't sure if they'd be "interested' in helping us with a small repair. But we called them because they are on our "short list" of choices for when we do our full bathroom repair/remodel, and we thought this might be a way to get some first hand experience with their company. We would have fully understood if they had turned down our request for such a small repair that wasn't even related to a remodeling job they were working on, so we were very pleasantly surprised that Dan was so helpful and willing to work with us on getting the leak stopped as soon as he could get someone out there. The workman he sent (I'm sorry I can't remember his name now) was prompt, personable, and made quick work of stopping the leak. Like Dan, his attitude was helpful and he also made a couple of suggestions about how we might deal with some of the plumbing issues we're facing in a 100 year old home. We're very glad that we called them, and are thankful for the restored peace of mind of not hearing running water inside our bathroom wall!

Dan came to the house and looked at the work and gave me very good, helpful input. He got the quote back to me exactly when he said he would and gave me a very reasonable / accurate estimate of when they could start the work. Based on Dan's recommendation, after removing the shower/tub doors, they filled in the small screw holes with some patch material and it is hardly noticeable. I thought we would have to replace many tiles but didn't have to. You could hardly tell there was ever a tub door there - on the tile wall or on the tub. Dan also gave me a good suggestion on how to fill in some missing tiles and make them look original. Now the tile work looks better than before the job (instead of looking like a "patch job"). Installer was very helpful and courteous. Got everything done in a reasonable amount of time. Did an excellent job of cleaning up afterwards. We had some issues with the new sink fixture and Dan came back out to fix it. Turns out it was the fixture itself, not the installation but he fixed it anyway.

Always on time and began work immediately. I could trust him, Jeff, with a key. Very pleasant and professional.
