Thatcher Painting

Tony showed up on time and I began to show him all the rooms that needed painted. I only wanted the ceiling painted, but Tony said he couldn't do that unless he painted the entire room + ceiling. I explained several reasons why I didn't want to do that. He fussed about as I showed him the other rooms in which I only wanted the ceiling painted. Suddenly he flipped out and started throwing a temper tantrum! He started to insult me and said he didn't need the job. He immediately stomped out of the house. I was shocked... This is not a professional and not someone I would hire.

This is the worst experience I have ever had with a contractor. A neighbor told us about him and said he did great work. We hired him to paint some rooms in our rental property, to prepare for new tenants. He started work, and after the first day, we noticed that he had not done any prep work on the walls - no hole filling, sanding, or even cleaning. When my wife brought it up, he claimed that it wasn't in the "bid" - a handwritten list of things he intended to do. We thought prep was customary for a paint job. That was the first conflict. The next conflict arose when the carpet installers came a day early. Thatcher said he had to be alone in the house in order to work. We thought it that was unreasonable; there were several projects to be done on a strict timeline. We said we would tell the carpet installers to stay out of a room he was working in, but that wasn't good enough and he refused to work for two days. When he came back, my wife pointed out some issues with a ceiling he had painted, and brought the lack of prep to his attention again. He said he was afraid we would not pay him, and demanded to be paid for the work he'd done so far...plus $15/hr to fix the mistakes he had made! My wife didn't want to have to find another painter, so she paid him a little over half of what she had agreed to pay him for the full job. Over the next few days, he harassed my wife on Facebook and via text message, saying she had told him not to do any prep work before he started, and that she was trying to get extra work done. I stepped in and called to ask if he intended to come back and finish the work. After half an hour of criticizing my wife and refusing to work with her again, he finally agreed to return and work for one more day. I agreed to pay him the balance of the estimate when the work was done. The next evening, I went to check on his progress. He had spread drywall mud all over the walls in one of the bedrooms, making a polka dot pattern on all four walls. Many of the smears were not over holes; the walls were just randomly daubed with mud. On a built in cabinet that he had neglected to sand before painting, there were deep gouges and curls of wood, like he took a chisel to it. Finally, there was a puddle of urine in the kitchen. I immediately called him, then texted him, then Facebook messaged him, saying that I wanted an explanation of the condition in which he had left our property. He never responded. We feel that he vandalized our property in a fit of anger. We had to change the locks and hire another contractor to repair the damage and finish the rooms Thatcher never even started. I thought our experience was unique until I saw another review here, in which his attitude is documented similarly. Maybe he has a problem with women pointing out his mistakes. Regardless, this man created many more problems than he was hired to fix. One more thing - when he was harassing my wife, he threatened to complain to the health department that we had undisclosed black mold. We have since inspected the entire property and found nothing. So either he painted over black mold instead of telling us where it was so we could remediate it, or he lied.

I had used Tony previously and was happy with the price and quality of his work. About 6 weeks ago I contacted him about painting my kitchen and cabinets. Originally I thought the kitchen remodel would be complete prior to the painting. The Friday prior to our appointment I contacted him to verify that he was still planning on doing the painting. Later in the day my contractor indicated that we had an issue with the delivery of the granite and backsplash and the project would be put on hold. I didn't call Tony back because I felt what needed to be done regarding the painting could still be done. When he showed up on Monday he acted like he didn't want to be here and only spent about 4 hours working on my cabinets. I had let him know that my contractor would be back to repair some drywall, nail holes and caulk. On monday he asked me when he left when they were coming back and I told him I didn't know. Monday evening I received a note that they would be back on Tuesday to do the work. Originally we had thought the entire kitchen would be completed before he painted but there has been a delay with the granite. I didn't want to cancel on him last Friday because I didn't want him to be out of work for the week so felt like we When he showed up on Tuesday the contractor was here and I introduced them but could sense immediately Tony wasn't happy. He had gotten paint on my new floors and got mad when I said something about it. He didn't like the way the contractor was doing the patch job. He stayed for about an hour and 15 minutes and said he felt disrepected and said let him know when they were done and he would come back. My contractor told him they would be done that afternoon. I sent a text that night and left a voice mail that I was sorry he felt disrespected but had been up front that they would be back. I didn't hear back from him so this morning left a vm to inquire if he was coming back. He didn't show up and then finally texted me that he would only come back if he wasn't talked down to and treated with respect. I texted him back and said that I didn't see any indication that he was disrespected or treated badly and that I felt disrespected because I am the customer and paying him to do a job and felt uncomfortable that he stomped out of here like a child. I gave him a figure that I felt was fair that I would send him a check for and that we needed to discontinue this business relationship. He then proceeded to call me and started screaming at me that the money wasn't enough and if I didn't send him x amount for what he had done he would put a lien on my condo and take it away from me. He was getting louder and more frightening in his tone. I then proceeded to hang up on him and then he called me back and screamed don't you hang up on me. I informed him that if he could talk to me in a calm voice to discuss the situation. It really didn't help and I told him to send me an invoice and I would put a check in the mail today. I decided I didn't want him coming back to my home because his temper was so violent that I was uncomfortable and somewhat frightened. I am a senior citizen and felt that I was taken advantage of and treated with an abusive attitude.

This is our second time Tony has painted our house as we had a change of heart about the color. The first time he had our 2500+sq ft house completely painted in 3 days. He did an amazing job this time and the last time. He arrives promptly on time, uses precision and detail to perfection, and takes his time to make sure the job is done correctly. Tony has done such an amazing job I have recommended him to all of our friends and family!

Tony did an awesome job painting our home. He not only painted, but did the trim, repaired the drywall and corrected any imperfections on the walls. He paints as if it was his own home. It was worth every penny!

Tony did an AMAZING job!! I am glad I called him to do the job. I had another painter come to paint a room that he screwed up but Tony was able to make it look nice!! You can tell he takes pride in his as it speaks for itself. The edges were neat and clean and was able to get it done in one day! I would highly recommend Tony for any paint jobs.

Tony took on the large job of painting the entire house 2 coats. He was prompt, polite, professional, and did a top notch job. They cleaned up every night and then cleaned up well at the end of the project. From someone who has had many bad painting experiences..he has definitely become my favorite. I can't say enough good things about this company. Tony came and gave me a very reasonable estimate. He and his crew were punctual, professional, talented and courteous and did much more work than they contracted to do without charge. The painting they did was excellent and they completely cleaned up the work area before they left. The work took a little longer than expected yet they did not raise the negotiated price. Tony took great pride in his work and went above and beyond my expectations. I have hired dozens of companies over the years and Thatcher painting is by far one of the best. This is a top notch company and a pleasure with which to do business. I will recommend them to all of my friends.

This went terrible--I think Tony and Thatcher Painting are a shady bunch. I would strongly caution anyone considering hiring Tony Thatcher or Thatcher Painting especially if you are on a tight timeline as I was. I guess he and his painter showed up but didn't feel like doing the work they were contracted to do. I hired Tony to paint 4 rooms of my home excluding the ceilings. I purchased the primer, cauk, and wood filler the night before because Tony would not supply the items even if they were reimbursed. He had confirmed that Day 1 was solely prep work not finish painting. I left a key for Tony so he could let himself in and get started along with the materials. I came home during lunch and Tony left a note that "things had changed" and that he wasn't going to do the work. Nothing had changed other than he probably had another job or was too lazy to get started. I had spent over 2 hours the night before preparing for his arrival by moving all the furniture into the middle of the room so he would have plenty of room to work and cleaning off all countertops in the kitchen. Tony did not even have the courtesy to call me to let me know that he decided not to do the work---just left a note and my key in the mailbox. Now, I am wondering if anything was taken from my home since all of this is so suspicious.

We contacted Tony about our painting and he was actually able to give us a quote via email, with us providing the dimensions of the areas we needed painted. He gave us a quote that we thought was a very good price and was also able to come out that very same weekend - which in our case was a big plus because we wanted all the painting done before our floors got put in upstairs. Tony and another man showed up on time and with all of their materials. They got to work right away. We used a neutral color for most of the space except we did have an accent wall in our master bedroom with a red paint (which they had to do 3 coats of!). The paint job is perfect - no spills, perfect edging and no drip marks. They did a fabulous job and I can't complain about anything. We plan on getting some more rooms painted in the new year and we will be contacting Tony again.
