The client called for an estimate to move his daughter from North Carolina to Indianapolis. We discussed over the phone what she had to move. After discussing how much she had, I told the client to call a major van line to get another estimate, to make sure I knew how much was there. He didn't do that. He admitted to me that he failed to get another estimate. He then told me, that his daughter moved from Chicago 4 years ago, and was basing that cost with this move. I told him, the average family adds about 1,500lbs of household goods every year. So, obviously the move 4 yrs ago from Chicago had no significance. They also added another child and have 6 year old toddler. After pulling up to the home and doing the initial walkthrough, myself and my crew realized this was more than double the amount the member gave me over the phone. I immediately called him back in Indianapolis and explained that the cost would increase significantly. He told me that he and his wife UNDERSTOOD! I said ok, and then we took care of business like usual. I also told the client that it was very lucky that I got my 18 wheeler up to the house. If he used a major van line, they would have had to shuttle the shipment out with a smaller truck and transfer to the semi. The area where the house was in Asheville was extremely tight/Hilly and cars on both sides of street. I took a chance going in there with my semi, but was trying to save him from any extra cost. Again, I asked him prior to arriving, are you SURE we can get a HUGE moving van close. He said he saw moving vans in there before. I can tell you this, not 18 wheelers. He then admitted to me he really didn't know. In response to the weigh tickets having different #'s on them, the truck stop certified scale attendant put the wrong # on the ticket. He also says we were a day early. We'll, I was ahead of schedule, and made contact with the daughter, notifying her that if it was ok, that we could come a day early. I also said, by no means, do we expect you to say yes, but she said NO PROBLEM. In response to paperwork, the client was mailed an order for service, stating the actual move is non-binding. In response to not being available, it was the member not answering his phone when it came time to pay. On an interstate move, you pay COD, before we open our doors at destination. We already packed,loaded/transported and unloaded in my warehouse and an extra delivery to the parents house in carmel. They needed to pay at that point, and the member was unreachable via phone, but his son-in-law was calling me a showing up at my warehouse unannounced. I told the son-in-law that until the father pays, we can't do anything else with your shipment. Finally, the member called and we Agreed on $5k, which was still discounted based on actual weight and sevices. Please note that we where graded an A on quality. Another interstate move with nothing damaged. On another note, when dropping stuff off at the parents house in Carmel, the wife of the member said to one of my men, "I can't believe all of this stuff they are bringing to our house". Sounds like a stressful time for this family and they took it out on studley, when I wouldnt budge on price. Danieil studley Addition 7/5/12: Per the customer's email ( the customer we moved is the daughter of the Angie's List Member) She sent an email on May 31st, 2012 Suggesting a price of $ 5,000.00 as a fair! This was once again the person we moved sending this email! Studley Moving excepted this price to resolve the issue! The Angie's List Member is wanting Studley Moving to concede even more! Studley Moving & Storage, Inc. at this point has spent a total of $ 4,800.00 to date on this move. The labor to load, transport the daughter & Son In-Laws household goods from Asheville, NC. to Indiana with two different original deliveries. One to temp. residence (parents house, the Angie's List Member) and the remaining into our facility for storage. Then reload with seven movers & truck to deliver the storage to a mini storage unit for the customer. Studley Moving & Storage, Inc. assumed that this was settled with the decision made by the customer via email! The Angie's List Member set up the move for his daughter and Son In-Law! They are the actual customers! In an email to the General Manager of Studley Moving & Storage, dated May 31, 2012 @ 8:31 AM. The customer (daughter of the Angie's List Member) asked that the price of the move be at $ 5,000.00. This price had many concessions from Studley Moving! We wanted to meet her request to just make this issue come to an end for them and for our company! So in good FAITH, we delivered the items that we in storage at our facility. The evening of May 31st, 2012, after working a full day on other moves Studley Moving made accommodations to deliver late that evening! Studley Moving did not charge for the extra labor to reload and deliver her personal items to a self storage unit of their choice. An additional $ 1,300.00 should have been charged on top of the concession for just that service. We utilized seven professional movers and truck to make delivery the evening of May 31st. With the amount paid by the customer to date, Studley Moving has in turn lost money on this account. We do not want to entertain and go further into debt when we thought everything was settled! The Interstate Move Quote was NOT a "Binding Interstate Move Quote”. The customer’s father, who is the Angie's List Member, said that he would be sure that there would be a quote from an origin mover in Asheville, NC. Studley Moving requested this to provide a much better quote as this would show a much closer total weight for moving and any additional services required! They did not fulfill that part of the obligation. If the Angie's List Member HAD a mover in Asheville, NC visit and provide a good estimate! We would not be at this point. The move would have been a set price if those steps had been taken!
