The inspection went well. I would rate it as Fair. The inspector made some observations and said that everything looked okay despite some of the beams sagging in the cellar. It was made clear that old houses have some sagging. There was nothing given in writing. A year later when we were trying to sell the home, I attempted several times to contact the company to see if I could get something in writing about the structural integrity of the house. I was even willing to have them come out again for an inspection, but I did not get a response to the emails or voicemails I sent. If I could get something in writing, I would have given the service a B.

He spent plenty of time explaining the all issues involved with basements and water from underground and from roof run off. It was money well spent. My understanding after having him evaluate my issues and explain the “why it happened” and “what to do next” made me a much better educated homeowner and consumer.

Kevin is the ultimate professional. i have remodeled my home within the last 10 years and he spent time to make sure he thotoughly understood my remodel and concerns. He then took the time to explain to me, in layman's terms, what he thinks is going on with my house. Turns out that the issues are in the normal range of things that happen over time. Such a relief....been worried about me 40+ year old house. I was absolutely confident in Kevin's integrity and ability to assess the condtion of my home.

Kevin was very thorough and took a lot of time to explain the concepts and his thinking about our particular situation. I appreciated the amount of information he provided. His advice was that our basement wall had seen some movement, but it had been addressed years before, and was not likely to move any further with the current structural bolstering. I appreciated that he tried to save me some money by not preparing a full report. He suggested that when we go to sell the house, the buyers may want a report, so if we got it now, it would be out of date by then, and of limited value to the buyers. I also believe that by hiring a professional like Kevin, we were able to avoid getting massive quotes for unnecessary work by unscrupulous foundation repair companies. Money well-spent.

Kevin came, he was friendly, very personable and knowledgeable but he provided way too much information. He came up what he thought was the reason, but as far as how to go forward, he gave me some options on what I would like to do. At that point I didn't know yet and would like to get a second opinion based on what he said.

As a result of an inspection demand when selling our home, we needed to quickly hire a structural engineer. It was a holiday weekend and we were under a tight timetable. I went to Angie's List and saw great reviews for Kevin at this company. Kevin came out and did an extremely thorough inspection, followed by a thorough report. He is a pleasant, knowledgeable professional. I would highly recommend Kevin and his company to you.

Excellent. We implemented his solutions and are looking forward to having the issues fixed.
Description of Work: House was undergoing a total residing and upon tear-off of the old siding we discovered that the rim joist was 2/3 off the sill plate. I needed a quick assessment of the issue with recommendations for a solution. Kevin quickly got back to me and arrived the morning of the next day to minimize delays in using the siding crew. He assessed the issue and made workable recommendations to solve the problem that was affordable to me. He also assessed the impact of other wood rot found in the structure and inspected some items on the interior of the house with recommendations for solutions. Kevin explained well and educated me to better understand the situation. He was very pleasant and easy to work with. His advice allowed me to be stress free once again.

Kevin discussed the soil science and physics behind the cracking we're experiencing and made recommendations for how to fix the cracking and monitor them over time. Overall saving us several thousands of dollars in unnecessary immediate fixes.
Description of Work: We've had evaluations on foundation cracks from several foundation companies; however, they gave us differing reasons (sinking versus bowing) and different plans of action. We contacted Structural Engineer Consultants to give us a neutral expert analysis of the foundation cracks.

Called the listed number, the announcement mentioned a cell number, so I called that. Told him what I was looking for. He was driving, so I offered to email or use this site to send details. He didn't want me to do that for some reason, it was puzzling. I have a fair amount of experience with contractors and good communication is important, so I sent a brief description anyway, along with a photo. He replied on Angie's List early this morning "I have your information and will contact you later..." etc. Phoned me mid-afternoon; garbled the address (it was in my message), took stabs at re-stating what the job was about but garbled that too, odd rambling statements, couldn't seem to understand my explanations - I thought he was loaded. Had to twist his arm to look at the info I sent him, which he read back in a sarcastic tone, then called it "cryptic." I told him to forget it. This guy values his time so much that he charges just to drive to the job site, yet he'll call and hassle you and waste your time, God knows why. I wouldn't hire him if he was the last PE in Indiana. (PS hey Angie, this has nothing to do with Flooring Sales/Installation/Repair but I can't remove that category.)

Response from Structural Engineering Consultants
I am shocked to receive this "review" that resulted from a nine minute phone conversation with this individual. To be clear, there was no contract for work or any work provided. There was no on site review or even a schedule for such an evaluation. This scathing "review" was the result of just a nine minute telephone conversation, period. I am more appalled by the false claims and defamatory accusations made against me. Under no circumstances are these allegations even remotely accurate and I vehemently deny them in totality. Facts: I received an unsolicited phone call from this individual on October 19 while driving. After a brief discussion, I suggested that it would be best if he could text me his information and I would phone him when back at the office to further discuss his structural concerns. He texted me his information as suggested and also sent an email message via Angies List. I subsequently replied to this message at 7:01 am the following morning and informed him that I would phone him later to review his concerns. As promised, I contacted him at 2:37pm that same day. Until this point we are in agreement of how things transpired, however this is also where our account of the events differ in content and truth. For reference, following is the original AList message that he sent me: "RE (address deleted). heres a pic anyway-you can see sinking right corner. Need whole front wall/porch roof measured/sighted for skews, etc, also related interior inspection. Porch roof will be supported and porch demolished in near future, rebuilt later on." This message referenced a "pic"(photo) that was NOT attached and NEVER received. As can be see, this short, jumbled and abbreviated message was vague and unclear of subject matter. A "somewhat cryptic" description seems fair and appropriate to me. The follow up conversation was odd as this guy immediately seemed agitated when I asked him for a simple recap of his project and concerns. Instead of providing an explanation of the situation, he continued to ask me if I had received the information that he sent. I assured him that I had, however without a picture the "somewhat cryptic" message was short in description and subject matter. I simply needed more information to understand his concerns and to better assist him. At this point he seemed agenda driven and was reluctant to describe his issues and again questioned me about receiving his message. He acted as if I should have intimate knowledge of who he is, where he lives and what his structural issues were based off of the above referenced message. In a seemingly elevated and combative tone he continued to reference this picture that I never received. In an attempt to diffuse the situation, I asked if he could reset and start from the beginning. He said, "Forget it" and hung up on me. I was assuming this was the end to this odd interaction until I received a deceitful "review" that is full of mistruths and false accusations. It is ironic that he mentioned the need for "good communication" due to his reluctance to have a reasonable conversation so that I could assist him. Now, with almost thirty years of engineering experience receiving positive feedback and satisfied and often repeat clientele, it is expected for there to be a few clients that are not satisfied with our work. These cases are generally resolved amicably. However in this instance there was NO WORK even provided. It was just a brief phone conversation followed by a deceitful review. I take offense with any individual that attacks my character with false claims and accusations. There was no "arm twisting". He claimed that I was unable to understand his explanations, because he did not offer much beyond "did you even read my message." As for the suggestion of being "loaded" - ridiculous, period. I deny any such accusation as completely absurd and shameful. I do indeed value my time; he is correct. Because i value my time, I do not make a habit of randomly calling and soliciting individuals hoping that they may potentially need engineering assistance. I found this quite ironic, he contacted me. Therefore I feel that I was the one that had to endure the claimed "hassle" and "waste of time", not him. I take exception with assertions that suggest improprieties of conduct regarding my professionalism and ethics. As a registered professional engineer I am bound by statutes and code of ethics. I abide by those privileges and conduct my business accordingly. I take pride in my business and will not stand for anyone to attack my character or my professionalism. I would welcome further conversations regarding these matters, but I do not wish to waste any more of my "valuable" time with this individual. In addition, I do not believe that it would be productive to further engage with anyone that can easily twist the truth and sling defamatory comments. I wish him luck with his project as I am sure he will need it. I apologize for the lengthy reply but felt it was necessary to explain the defamatory comments and to defend my honor.

Kevin was both professional and friendly and thus put me at ease in what could've been a stressful inspection, as I did not know what to expect. I was impressed with this depth of knowledge and yet who's desire to communicate to me in a way that I could understand. What a fine gentleman!
Description of Work: Kevin came out to our home on relatively short notice and performed a very professional and thorough inspection of our foundation and basement. Being that my background in this area is very minimal, Kevin, took the time to explain the current condition of my property as well as his impression of any issues that might present them selves in the future. I would say without hesitation that I was more than satisfied with Kevin's thoroughness and professionalism. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone who needs similar work done for their property and would call Kevin in a heartbeat should I ever need his services in the future.

Prior to hiring Kevin I read the reviews on here. I specifically asked about the cost for ?drive time? and negative review mentioned by someone else he had charged $100 for this. I told him the area I lived in Carmel and he said he was centrally located so it would only be 15-20 minutes. For the actual structural assessment we were in the basement for 40 minutes discussing the issues. That was fine but it could have been much quicker 20-30 minutes but he talked A LOT. I asked him if he had any recommendations for the repair work and he said he has a guy has recommended in the past and he would send me his information. When we finally went upstairs he gave me a form to sign that stated he was not legally liable for the conversation we had and basically anything we did based on his assessment was not his responsibility. I asked him how much the total would be and he said $167. I asked him to please explain how he came up with that number. I had calculated $67 for 40 minutes + I needed to calculate travel. How was it $100 for travel? He then got irritated with me and said well fine you pay me what you think is fair. I paid him for 40 minutes of travel but I had a feeling it was going to come back to bite me and I was right? I texted him a few days later to request the information for his recommended contractor and received this response?. (Reconsidered and I don?t believe your beam support project fits well with my foundation contractor. I would suggest that you look to Angie?s List for contractors/bids. Good luck with your project. I guess if I had paid him the full $167 I would have gotten a recommendation!

It went really well. He was willing to accommodate via Face Time due to location differences while he did the inspection. I really appreciated the special accommodations due to the circumstances.
Description of Work: He came out and looked at the wood floors in the older home, there was sagging. Kevin took a look to see how severe it was and did some leveling to see if there was significant damage. He was very thorough and told us exactly what was causing the floors to not be level. He told us that it was fairly common with homes of this age.

He gave me his opinion about services I may and may not need and I was ok with that. He charged me $100 per hour, which was fine too, I expected that but I wasn't expecting an additional $100 charge to drive to and from my home. Somehow I missed that. I haven't hired anyone to do the work yet but I think I have a little clearer idea what I need to consider.
Description of Work: Kevin arrived as scheduled and looked at my garage foundation, a support beam in the house and an exterior wall. I did not request written reports so there was no need or charge for that. He spent 1.5 hours at my home looking at and explaining his findings and answering my questions about concerns I had.

We're glad to know that all is well in the house. These cracks are to be expected and are really not an issue to be addressed at this time. He explained how weight loads are carried throughout the house, and what to look for. He was very thorough and informative. He's a walking encyclopedia on structures. It made sense to get an unbiased evaluation first rather than have a company come out that's trying to sell a product and may or may not use a structural engineer to evaluate the situation truthfully. We'd have Kevin come out again if needed and will recommend him to others. The reason we gave a "B" on price is that there is billing for travel that seems to be based on his hourly working rate. All other providers we've used ( and they've come from some distance), have not charged to this degree. We do find it acceptable though, with gasoline prices being what they are, that a gas fee would be a fair charge to pass on to clients.
Description of Work: Needed to have some hairline cracks evaluated as to their significance. Kevin checked the attic, small crack in corner of closet door, slight pulling away of taping in family room corner, and some hairline cracks on poured concrete wall in basement and on the floor. Kevin took a look around the house and checked our paver patio in the back, too. We may or may not regrade the patio.

Very interesting to talk with he was able to discuss ideas at my level and was able to give me some great ideas. Unlike other structural engineers I have used, Kevin actually took me under the house to show me what needed to be done. He took time to answer all my questions and explain procedures in detail. He made himself available for questions after I started the project. When I got his final bill I was surprised because with all the work he did on this project I expected it to be much more.He sent me the plans I needed the next week before I expected them. He was professional and friendly and I will use him again.
