Overall our experience with Scully's was very bad and we do not recommend them. After finding out that part of the flue liner was never installed, that the cap that they put on was the wrong size, and that this was a potential fire hazard, we called Scully's to inform them of this around the end of Nov. 2009. Mr. Scully did not return the phone call. Scully's was called again on 12-5-09 and told that Mr. Scully would return the call; he did not. Another message was left that afternoon. We were able to speak with him on 12-7-09 and Mr. Scully said that he did not believe that the chimney flue liner pipe was missing at all and blamed the chimney sweeps for the problem saying that most of them were crooks. We contacted the chimney sweep to ask if the pipe was jammed and they confirmed that the pipe was totally missing, never installed, and was not that hard to put in. We again called Mr. Scully; someone said he would call back but he did not return the call. We again called on 12-24-09 and Mr. Scully said he would send someone to look at the problem on 12-29-09; Scully's cancelled due to snow. They said they would call and reschedule; no one called. We called them on 1-4-10. Scully's said they would come on 1-13-10; they cancelled because of snow. We told Scully's this problem needed to be taken care of right away because our bonus room filled with smoke as well as the smell of smoke going throughout the house. The wood stove was shut down for the safety of the family. Scully's was notified by us that the roof on that side of the house was clear of snow on the afternoon of 1-13-10. They said they would come on 1-15-10. Mr. Scully called and left a message with our teenage son telling him that he wasn't coming to fix the chimney and would not be dictated to as to when he would come and fix it and hung up on him! The roof has been clear of snow since then with temperatures in the 40's and Scully's has not called and rescheduled to come back out. A third opinion was obtained on 1-19-10 which said that yes, the top 4 feet of chimney flue was never installed and the wrong chimney cap was put on that was clogged after just being cleaned in November 2009. The third opinion said that creosote and water had run down into the outer chimney liner and creosote had coated the cap causing the smoke to go back down into the living space which was dangerous and a fire hazard! This third opinion also said that it would have been best if the outside of the liner would have been insulated but that this was never put in. Pictures were obtained to confirm the mentioned problems. We're giving an F grade because of Scully's Fireplace Shop's negligence from the beginning in not properly installing the chimney flue and cap, not returning phone calls, cancelling appointments, relaying a message to an older child and hanging up on him instead of communicating with the homeowners, and not taking responsibility for a faulty installment job which has caused us to have to pay for numerous chimney cleanings and has been dangerous to our family. UPDATE:January 25, 2010 After we contacted the home builder and this home builder spoke with Mr. Scully about this situation, Mr. Scully said that he would now come and fix the chimney flue and cap. Scully's Fireplace Shop did not come and fix the above stated problems even after receiving a certified letter from us which stated that we would like that Scully's fix the problem within 15 days of receiving the letter. It has been 22 days and still no repairs were made by Scully's. Therefore, because we have lost money due to an increase in our electricity bill since we haven't been able to use the woodstove in over a month and because we have been trying to get Scully's to fix this problem since November of 2009, we decided to go ahead and hire another company to remedy the problem. The other company fixed the problem in a timely fashion and in several inches of snow! The reason that we're changing the price to an F is because upon examining the original receipts from Scully's after installing the woodstove in 2002, we saw that we paid for a full-length chimney flue liner and a cap which we had believed was the correct one at that time and because we paid someone else over $700 to correct Scully's problems at our own expense! Response: We had called Scully's Fireplace many times over the years because of various issues we had with the woodstove and were consistently told that there was nothing wrong with the fireplace they installed but the problem was that the modern home is built so air tight that it causes a backdraft of the air from the woodstove into the living space and we should crack a window or door to solve the problem (which did not). The chimney sweeps (recommended with good grades from Angie's List) all denied that any damage at all had been done from their chimney sweeps and said that the upper stovepipe was never installed from the beginning which caused all of the smoke issues in the home over the years and was a potential fire hazard. No unreasonable demands were made from us; we only asked to be fixed what was originally promised to us so that we could have a safe and healthy woodstove and environment for our family. After we had the woodstove repaired by a reputable company which we found on Angie's List and the woodstove was working consistently fine (the first time since we owned it), the builder spoke with us and asked us for the name of the company that came out in the snow and ice and repaired the problem.
Description of Work: Wood stove insert and chimney was installed into new home in about February of 2002. We had problems off and on over the last 7 years with the woodstove, mainly smoke entering into the living space which mostly would improve upon chimney sweep cleaning. In November of 2009 Scully's recommended a chimney cleaning which we did and the chimney sweep informed us that several feet of chimney flue liner was totally missing and the chimney cap was the wrong size.

Response from STEVE SCULLY FIREPLACE REPAIR, LLC
The woodburning insert was sold to the building contractor in Jan. 2002 for considerably less than stated by "the member". In the beginning of the 8th burning season, the homeowner called about a smoking problem. (No other complaints during the previous 7 years.) It was installed to manufacturer's specifications with the factory recommended HT flexible flue liner kit and reportedly worked fine until last fall. Upon discovering the method used to clean the liner, it became apparent the pushing and pulling of the brush (from below) had pulled the liner away from the top, causing it to slip down inside the flue. It's not possible for a "section" to be missing, as it is a long, one-piece flexible pipe. Any professional chimney sweep should have noticed the disconnected liner once the cap was removed for cleaning/inspection; and the smoking problem would have existed from day 1, had it been improperly installed (not 8 years later). Unfavorable weather has prevented an inspection/repair from the roof and advance scheduling has to be made as the home is located over an hour away. Freezing rain was forecasted the day of her last appointment, and the homeowner vented her frustrations. Her unreasonable demands were rejected and this exaggerated complaint appeared. We firmly deny that the insert was improperly installed or that improper venting components were used. Additionally, the building contractor who purchased the insert, apologized for the homeowner's actions and had agreed to pay for the repairs, understanding that we would schedule once it warmed up a bit. We have installed wood inserts for satisfied customers for over 10 years. Unfortunately, there are some who will go to the extreme and use this venue to publish a false accusation in order to get "something for nothing" or punish those who refuse to comply with their demands.

It went really well. I thought he should charge more for his service. He is so neat, friendly and clean. He know his business and can be trusted to be honest.
Description of Work: Steve Scully installed two fireplaces 9 years ago. The fireplaces are wonderful, and Steve is the best contractor you could ever find. He cleaned my fireplaces glass and fixed one fireplace that had a switch that was not working. I use these fireplaces for hours every day when it is cold. I rarely use my central heating system to heat my first floor.

the owner came out for a estimate and to see if it could be done, was on time for both the estimate and the installation. no hidden surprises or charges and the installers were very neat and clean. would recommend and use again - now I know why they are so busy. Before this he and his wife also worked with me to repair the metal firebox and instructed the best way to install new glass doors, which I purchased from them a year ago.
Description of Work: converted our wood burning firplace to gas. involved a fairly long gas line run with gas shut offs. also had to black pipe for part of the line to bring to code which added to cost - included a very nice set of logs, a wall mount gas key and brought our fireplace to code.

Description of Work: Scully's were great! We were looking for a fireplace insert (wood), and they not only came in under the estimate for a mid-size insert, they put in the Pacific Summit (the largest size) for $100 less. (That included installation.) They had the largest insert in stock and I think that made the sale cheaper. They were neat, on time, behaved professionally and did not do a 'hard' sale.

Visited shop on a Saturday, very knowledgeable staff, arranged for estimate on Monday, arrived promptly, estimate was within my desired range, came to install fireplace insert on Friday, again arrived on time, minor problem during install that was remedied quickly and to our satisfaction, excellent quality product and service, absolutely love our new fireplace insert and have used it constantly ever since. Using less than 1/2 the natural gas ever since insert was installed.

The owner came out and measured my fireplace. The store then mailed me estimates for all of the doors available for my type of fireplace. The store called me when the doors came in and we scheduled a day for installation. The worker arrived on time and removed the old doors, installed the new doors, and cleaned up afterwards. The doors look beautiful!

Steve Scully came out several times and was very attentive to our project. He initially came out to examine the existing fireplace to make sure that it could be converted for use with gas. When he came out to install the unit he encountered blockage in the flue caused by some old repairs done sometime since the house was constructed in 1929 (the fireplace was in an unfinished basement and it appeared that it had never been used). Steve gave us the name of a Your Chimney Sweep that came out and did a great job clearing the flue. Steve then returned and installed the unit. Very helpful and cooperative throughout. He even made some suggestions regarding the routing of ductwork necessary to ensure the basement would be comfortable when finished!

I ordered a mantel shelf for my fireplace. The shop stained the shelf to match my loft. The worker arrived on time. It took only about 30 min to install it. He cleaned up before he left. The mantel is beautiful!
Description of Work: Installed a mantel shelf on my existing fireplace. I talked to several other fireplace shops who told me that it could not be done because of the uneven stone. However, Scully's said it was no problem.

Went to store to select my logs. Representative was very helpful, gave me measurement information and asked me to call once I make a selection. I called, gave measurements, (spoke with a different rep.) and scheduled a time to do the job. On the day of the job, the representative arrived, but was not told it was an install with gas line work. Although frustrated, I had to reschedule the job. They came on a different day to do the work and did a wonderful job. When the gas company came to turn on the gas, they refused because something wasn't up to code. I called Scullys and asked for Steve Scully to come out to resolve the issue and he did. He fixed the problem himself and then had his staff meet the gas company a few days later to hook up the logs. The reason I am detailing the events is because I was very unhappy with all the problems. However, I have to give Scully a good rating because they hung in there until it was right, which is excellent customer service.

Very odd! We found them on Angie's List so know that others have had a good experience. We cannot understand how they've made so many mistakes, broken so many promises (reserving a unit in our name, appointment, returning the phone call) for us. We are very disappointed.
Description of Work: We asked at the shop for a wood insert; they said they would put our name on the only remaining one, and they would send Steve Scully to our home for measurements, etc., on November 29. They gave us a card with the date and time, and we called again after we got home to confirm that was a good date. Waited the 2 weeks. No one came. They apologized and said they forgot to tell Steve Scully he was scheduled. So he came several days later; he then told us our name is not on any wood insert because they don't have any. He did measure and recommend the size, etc., but didn't know when they would get any from the distributor. A few days later we received the proposal. We are reluctant to return a signed proposal, as they don't know whether they'll get any wood inserts. I called the shop about this; she said she would call the distributor and then call us back. One week later - still no call.

I GAVE THEM A C IN PRICE NOT BECAUSE THE PRICE WAS NOT GOOD FOR THE WORK THEY DID, BUT BECAUSE THE PRICE TO DO THE ORIGINAL PROJECT WAS LESS BUT WHEN THEY LOOKED AT THE PROJECT, THEY SAID A LINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED WITHOUT LETTING US KNOW IT WOULD BE AN ADDITIONAL $165. IF THEY WOULD HAVE TOLD US THE PRICE WOULD BE THAT MUCH HIGHER, WE WOULD HAVE HAD THE GAS CAPPED AND NOT CONTINUED WITH THE PROJECT.
